@Duga Stahp!

@Hosch250 i think so, yes

@nhgrif Mac is *nix originated AFAIK and yes very similar

@Duga How can I make this spam worse?

[Vogel612/testclient_javabot] 1 commit. 1 issue comment.

12:00 AM
@Duga !!!

@nhgrif well I wish they have kept lots of those measurements for their intended purpose and now we wouldn't need to deal with 32 different units to measure the distance :)

Mac is built on Unix, yes. But I've never asked anyone: "Have you heard of the App store? It's this cool program that manages your updates!"

@nhgrif i think a better comparison would be chocolatey:homebrew, mac app store:windows app store

@nhgrif I have had my first Apple experience couple of days ago cuz I need to develop a multi platform app for work now. coming project you know. and if you mentioned Apple Store a week ago, I would think it's an store which sells really nice apples

Anyone around who could advise me on a couple ideas I have to monetize my app?

12:05 AM
Excellent answer, but I suspect this should have moved to Codereview — kdopen 1 min ago

I didn't say Apple Store.

Do segfaults count as working code?

Apple Store is the brick & mortar store where the Apple corporation sells their hardware.

@nhgrif I thought that's what it stands for ;P

No, application store.

12:07 AM
The Apple App Store is the program on Mac/iOS platforms through which applications are purchased/downloaded/updated.

@Hosch250 I would argue that

Anyway, I have two ideas I could implement.

And if you haven't heard of it, it's because you don't use any Apple platforms, in which case I wouldn't be telling you about it.

I've heard of it.

@Hosch250 No.

12:08 AM
OK.

Does “App” Mean Apple? Apple Claims Amazon’s New AppStore Infringes Its Trademark.

Anyway, I could use ads and provide an option to pay to get rid of them, or I could have an option to pay for certain content.
Which would you recommend?

@nhgrif I have used the App Store in the past. Used to own an iPhone for couple of months. It's was kind of a joke and truth (in terms of me not being familiar with Apple platform and the fact that that you were right with the similarities to Chocolatey)
@nhgrif Sorry for the confusion. I guess I trolled a little bit and it wasn't polite

There are two things I wish.
One, that I had more time to work on my app.
Two, I was able to quickly complete the set for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook quickly so I could port them to Mac.
I will never, ever be able to finish the set, but it would be nice to play with Office on OSX, iOS, and Android.

What app do you have @Hosch250?

12:14 AM
Learn OneNote.
It is in my profile.

0
A: How should the [beginner] tag be used?

nhgrifI'm not entirely certain I completely like this tag at all, actually. Personally, I don't tend to pay attention to whether or not the tag exists when I post answers. Sometimes, questions that probably should use the tag omit it (for whatever reason), and other times, questions that probably don...

@Hosch250 so you have in mind for porting on Mac. that's great

Yeah.
Eventually.

@Hosch250 Did you give the Mac version a go? the other day I downloaded it from app store and give it a spin

I want to complete it for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint first, and combine them into one complete app first.

12:15 AM
quite similar
some shortcuts are different though

Hmm. I always wondered who wrote these "Learn" type apps that serve as a tutorial for other apps.

I have only done one.

Want a real challenge? Write a "Learn" tutorial app for the software I write at work...

Sorry, I am toooo busy,
College, completing OneNote 2013, re-writing OneNote Windows Store and OneNote Windows Phone...
They completely re-wrote them for Windows 10 :(

Like writing analyzer software for analyzer software. BAM
@Hosch250 just a remote opinion. I would stick with one (say OneNote) and prime it like no other app can do in the market. Especially if you could do the 10 version. cuz I guess applications such as OneNote are gonna shine even more when 10 comes around

12:18 AM
OK, OneNote is my first priority.
My parents have a book called The Excel Bible.

Anytime I tried spreading the wings more than I could afford I just ended up doing a sloppy job of all the jobs

It is big and fat, and apparently the author can earn a living by writing about Excel.
If I could do that...

@Hosch250 :D maybe you should call your app a OneNote Bible... but make sure Dummies won't sue you

I don't know Excel very well.
No, I already have rebranded it once.

I could never bring my self to create a product that I myself would never purchase.

12:20 AM
My first logo was based on the OneNote logo, but it was too close, and MS told me to change it.
So, I changed it and everyone is happy.
It was kind of interesting, though, because I could not get ahold of them through the email they said to use.

@Hosch250 Wow... didn't know they can complain about those things

So, I had to contact the person who contacted me.

@Hosch250 interesting

@Mehrad Why wouldn't they be able to? It's their app store.

Then, I got permission to put it back up, and they accidentally took it completely down!

12:22 AM
You can't misspell any Apple products in your app metadata on Apple's app stores. Moreover, you can't mention other app stores in that metadata.

So, I let it go until the end of the semester, and then I contacted them again, and they got it back up.
So, everyone is happy.

For example, you can't write IPHONE, or iPHONE or IPhone or any other variation. If you have anything other than iPhone, your app will be rejected before they even install the app and test it.

I should ask my parents if I can invest in Nokia 520's at $29.99

heard Apple's app store is really restrictive and controlling in that sake

I should buy a ton, then sell it and get the 630 or another one that can run Windows 10.

12:25 AM
Donno how they make them that cheap

It is a sale.
I got mine for $59.99
I think.
Well, they vetoed the plan without hardly listening.
See you later.
Supper's on.

1:00 AM
Been working on these bloody tests for 6 hours already. So close to getting it to work
One fun problem left: DbContext is mocked. I inject 2 objects in a DbSet. Everything is setup and works aside from the liiiiitle minor problem that the collection gets emptied for no reason when it is iterated
I hate mocking. It's stupid, brittle and requires so much setup work. Too bad I don't have any other choice

:/

remove() inside the loop?

if (!_context.Genres.Any(x => x.TMDbId == genre.TMDbId))
{
	Console.WriteLine("Inserting genre \"{0}\" with TMDb ID {1}", genre.Name, genre.TMDbId);
	_context.Genres.Add(genre);
	_context.SaveChanges();
}
At the if statement, Genres has 2 items

I have to confess, that I was lazy with jdOM in the past year, but having 1800+ unit tests gives me confidence that things still work.

I just read up on what Agile software development is...

1:02 AM
At the Console statement, Genres has 0 items
Singlethreaded environment

Bet you that the value is an IEnumerable that does not nreset ;-)

Does anyone in here like that thing?

what value?
Genres is a mocked DbSet, it should just work.. Should..

@Gemtastic It's got some parts of it right I believe. I think some people just took it off the deep end and went all dogmatic about it.
Beats waterfall development......

@JeroenVannevel can you post the code for creating the mock?

@JeroenVannevel i think the problem is this line
genreMock.As<IQueryable<Genre>>().Setup(x => x.GetEnumerator()).Returns(existingGenres.GetEnumerator());
does Returns support lambdas, like can you change it to .Returns(() => existingGenres.GetEnumerator()) ?

yes, let me try for a sec
huh
It still fails but now it says it expected 6 items but found 2
previously it was 6-0
First of all: what change did that make?

Q: Angularjs - Click interceptor directive

Adam GoldmanI needed a simple way to add this test to certain click events: if isUser then fireClickEvent else openSignInModal So I made this directive: angular.module 'openLETS.core.lib.guestLock', [] .directive 'authGuestLock', ($compile, $state, olString, Auth) -> ######### Private ######### rest...

@JeroenVannevel in the original code, genreMock.GetEnumerator() will always return the same object, the one passed as a parameter to Returns
in the () => version, a new IEnumerator will be returned for each call to GetEnumerator
since the genre was not in the dbset, the call to Any moved all the way through the enumerator, and subsequent calls to GetEnumerator return that exhausted enumerator

@RubberDuck What parts do you think it got right?

1:20 AM
ugh semantic satiation just kicked in

@Gemtastic quick loops of development & stake holder feedback.
Users don't know what they want. It's better to keep them involved throughout the project.

That way you never get too far off track.

@mjolka Brilliant
Okay well, this is good progress
Tomorrow I'll continue torturing my brain as to why it still doesn't work

Q: Implementation of Hangman in Java

Calculus5000Today I wrote an implementation of Hangman (code below) that was originally written to be used on the command-line. I'm in the process of getting it to work on some simple GUI, and I've almost got it to work on a GUI, however I'm having difficulty in determining how to get the user input from the...

@RubberDuck I can agree to that part too

1:36 AM
BTW, my users only use my app on average less than 1 minute a day.

Bah! I lost my log in streak!

How long was it?

68 days

Wow.

Or something around that number

1:42 AM
I lost mine at PPCG when I was 98 or something.
I have 62 here.

98 probably has to be the worst - two away from a badge.

I was in the 90's for sure, and I am 99% certain I was over 95.
99 would be the worst, but not much worse.

Speaking of PPCG, I'm going to go see if there is anything interesting over there.

I wonder where my badge is?

Why do you wonder that you wonder where you badge is?

1:48 AM
Oh, wait. I think I need 1 more.

That's an interesting stat @Hosch250.

@RubberDuck Which one?
That I'm one question away from Inquisitive?

Less than a minute a day.

Oh.
For the past couple days it has been a little over two minutes.

It's a tutorial of some sort right?

1:49 AM
I have nearly 7k users.
Yes.
But on average, it's about 1 minute or less.
Like this:
My new version is bringing many changes/features.
Note to users: please send feature requests to my Twitter account.
Guaranteed to be considered, high chance of implementation.

Happy Valentines day, Code Review

That was a while ago, @SirPython

I know, but that was the day I forgot to log on

It is Presidents Day today.

Sorry

1:57 AM
'bout what?

About being late

Who cares? (except for the missed day)

Happy Presidents day, Code Review.
That good? ;-)

Sure.
My puppy is the first or second picture in all the queues.

Is that your puppy in your profile picture?

2:00 AM
Yup.
I assume that isn't your python.

LOL
I wish

Pythons remind me the The Elephant's Child.

I've never heard of The Elephant's Child.

@Hosch250 Are you good with Windows 8?

2:08 AM
Very.
Why?

Could you help me with a small problem?

I can try.

Is there a way to bind a keyword to an executable in the command line? For example, when you type mkdir, it has the directory saved with that command that contains the executable. I've tried modifying the PATH variable, but it hasn't been working as expected.

WHooa... serial upvote, or serious santa? Thanks!

You're welcome.
@SirPython Did you try editing the PATHEXT?
It should be just below the PATH.

2:14 AM
I don't quite know what that is, but I'll go look it up.

I've not ever done this.

No I did not try to edit that, but I am sure that that is not going to fix it.

Anyway, why are you using the command line?

What else is there to use when running a compiler/assembler?

Oh, I use an IDE and just run from there.
I don't really know, though.

2:16 AM
Oh. I do have visual studio, but I'm not that good with it. Also, I just downloaded something and I want to see if it will even work on my architecture

OK.
@Mehrad Thanks, but I had OneNote 2013 even before it was free.
Came with Office 2010 and 2013.

@Hosch250 I know man. IMO everybody should keep himself updated about the tools he is working with. Say if somebody says, Oh you did that app about Learning OneNote? Btw is OneNote free even if I want to password protect my files? and you Freeze !!! Not good. right! :D

Q: Improving file writing performance

CaseyWhen I run this function for outputting an inverted index to a text file in Debug Configuration, it takes nearly two minutes (96 seconds) with a comparatively tiny dataset, 1252 records with the longest being 76 entries. std::ostream& operator<<(std::ostream& out_stream, const InvertedIndex& rhs...

@Hosch250 I fixed it

2:28 AM
Thanks.
@Mehrad OK. I wouldn't really freeze, though.
I didn't even know the free version was limited.
I can't install it because I have OneNote 2013 in.

@Mehrad that mvvm sample app... wow. thank you again. it's cleared up a few things for me

Q: Adaptive cyclic database iterator

Stanislav PalatnikThis is a bit tricky to explain. I'm trying to model a cyclic iterator that would return the next available DataSource(SQL). So infinite calls would just pick the next source nicely. The new twist comes with the idea that one DataSource might be 'busy' or somewhat. That is abstracted as a 'waitin...

SE, why do you limit me on my votes?
I still have a backlog of votes, and I already DVLR'ed.

Apart from the formatting (ctrl+shift+f in eclipse), this seems fine. Using a strategy pattern for the loops is overkill in this case. You might want to replace some of the \t with actual tabs to improve readability. Q: A User class for visitors to register and log in to a site. Uses MySQL for storage, and sessions & cookies

aylnonSo, hello all. This is my first time posting on CodeReview. Just looking for some feedback on my User class. @200_success how can you vote to open the question back up
I found this question in SO which is closed, reason being duplicate but it actually isn't
it has quite valuable information which the referenced question doesn't cover

@Mehrad On SO you would have to flag it with a custom reason, methinks, unless you have enough rep to VTR

Not that it effects me, but I would learn how to deal with similar situations and I think this question shouldn't be closed in the first place
I doubt that I would have enough to VTR
@Phrancis I can't even find any links to click. It's just sealed up

Q: What's the difference between Show(), ShowDialog() and Application.Run() functions?

user3144238What's the difference between new Show(), ShowDialog() and Application.Run() functions? In main (winforms) I saw : Application.Run(new Form1()); Then, for Form1, I also saw Form1.Show() with description: "Shows the control to the user." For ShowDialog, it said "Shows the form as a modal dialog...

at least for me

Just below the tags I see "share edit flag" do you see that?

@Phrancis sorry. it's there. So I need to reflag it

4:18 AM
I don't find it a particularly good question, though
(nothing that a bit of Smoking the Manual couldn't help IMO)

yeah, i can't say that question shows "research effort"

well it asks about the difference of A vs B, which the duplicate actually B vs C & D.
I personally find A vs B comparisons quite useful since they are simple and all the info is in one place.
@mjolka did you end up removing your close, min, max buttons from your Authentication window ?
remember you shared a screen shot but couldn't find it

@Mehrad i don't think so, no. i can tell you for sure when my VM starts working again :)

@mjolka apparently there is no standard feature to remove them in WPF. WTH

@Mehrad WPF seems half genius, half madness to me

4:27 AM
@mjolka I know. all those features and then it runs out of juice in some points that you would never imagined.

exactly

@mjolka if you haven't already and would be looking forward to do it the right way of removing Min/Max is to add ResizeMode="NoResize" to your Window tag in your Xaml.
apparently if you stop the window from being resized then WPF automatically removes those two. and close button stays behind. Like a dialog I would say
Not as flexible but it does the trick if you're lucky and wanting those two to be removed

Talking about WPF, do any of you know if there is an easy way to make content on a page go into two columns?

@mjolka Plain exceptions are the best exceptions, except the exceptionally suck

@Mehrad i'm trying not to put a horrible comment about the library in the try-catch i now have to write

5:35 AM
@Mehrad Actually, I do have Grid.
I just never figured out how to use it.

It's very easy
    <Grid Margin="4">
      <Grid.ColumnDefinitions>
        <ColumnDefinition Width="Auto"/>
        <ColumnDefinition Width="4" />
        <ColumnDefinition Width="*" />
      </Grid.ColumnDefinitions>
      <Grid.RowDefinitions>
        <RowDefinition Height="*"/>
        <RowDefinition Height="Auto"/>
      </Grid.RowDefinitions>

      <Border
        Grid.Column="0"
        Style="{StaticResource MainBorderStyle}"
        Width="140"
        >

OK.

@Hosch250 that's how you add columns and rows to a grid

Oh, yes, I've used Grid.
I don't know what I was thinking.

later on each component you put in it goes to the row = 0 or column = 0 unless you specify

5:42 AM
Yeah, I know.

great. here you go :D

The trouble is, I want my content to dynamically adjust into two even columns, like a printed bible.

For an easy solution you can use StackPanels

I don't want to have to manually adjust it.
I've used those too.

There are so many ways to do it.

5:43 AM
It is almost midnight here, so I'm kind of tired.
Here, I have an example

If you use a grid you can use the size tricks like the one I showed you in the example using /* and Auto

I've done that.

Okay... so whenever you're keen Ping me and we will open it up in details

Q: XAML Markup Improvements

Hosch250I have a Windows Store and Windows Phone app, and in this app I have many pages like this: <Grid Background="Transparent"> <ScrollViewer Style="{StaticResource DataPage}"> <StackPanel> <TextBlock> Some text here: <LineBreak/> <...

Like that, only I want it to dynamically adjust into columns without editing about a hundred pages.

5:48 AM
@mjolka I don't think I have access to that.

@mjolka Spot on. Never knew about it. Very interesting

@Hosch250 i forgot about WinRT
@Hosch250 RichTextBlockOverflow mentioned in that link might do it

Checking it out.
Looks like it should work.
So, I'm displaying this in a Frame, so now I'll need to figure out how to get it to wrap.
Also, I'm going to add quizzes and maybe some sort of progress tracker to my app, and give medals for passing quizzes and stuff.
That should help engage users.

Most components have a wrap property.

Well, thanks for the help.

5:55 AM
@Hosch250 Good idea.

Now, I just need to finish the tutorials.

Some apps go to some really extensive range doing so. I have seen one which was giving away Swords and shields and so on :D

I'm off to bed. See you.
