Monking.
I'm down to one last submission for college - my networking final.

gratz :)
I just finished the last tikzpicture on my programming assignment this week

Cool.

Grammars are just not fun to draw...
Did everyone see Shog's latest question?

Yes.

8:20 PM
Yeah! Oddly appropriate this week

@rolfl I'm working on the encryption thing, but DotNetZip isn't recognizing the content as a zip file.
Is there any special processing I need to do with that text to get my system to recognize it as a zip file?
For now, I'll just install 7-zip and create a password protected file myself.

@Zak The Ainu would disagree with that description of history.

Is it me or is rolfl not present much in chat lately? Or maybe my timing is off.. :p

It's not just you
but that's okay :)

Q: Command design pattern for deferred actions

@Vogel612 Yeah it sure is! Can't expect him to be on line all the time :p I was just wondering if something happened or idk

Pats self on back
@Zak I got it.

Zak
Ah, I see the problem I had.

I expect to be able to view, and interact, with chat systems in the presence of my boss. "Stack Overflow is a question and answer site for professional and enthusiast programmers." - if I cannot interact in a professional capacity, what's left? if profanity is "acceptable", then you start to lose your "professional" designation, and become "Stack Overflow NSFW"rolfl 39 secs ago

Yeah, I'm scared to let me siblings be around.
My parents would be so mad at me if they learned some of the swear words used here.
I got my program to work on a file password protected and encrypted with 7-zip.

@rolfl I'd star that

@Hosch250 I'm not sure but I am under the impression that cussing is a much bigger taboo in the US than in Europe...

Well, it is taboo in my family, anyway.

Got it that time :)

Q: Project Euler Q3 Javascript very slow, assistance needed

user2879041So Project Euler question 3 is very straightforward, my code returns the correct answer for the example (highest prime of 13195 is 29), but when I test against the number in the question my code basically is too slow for my liking. Here is the question: The prime factors of 13195 are 5, 7, 13 ...

Q: Add indicator for the OP to show that someone is writing an answer

TimWhen someone is typing an answer, the OP (and only the OP) could view something like this: This would tell me if someone was answering my question, and would be an indicator of whether I should hang around with the page open, or just close it and check later. Related, not duplicates: "User...

@Zak, thank got my phone got a type-c connector now. No more connecting it the wrong way :D

@Mat'sMug meh... as I understand it the questions where it'd matter most of the time users are composing their answer outside of the SE system

8:48 PM
@Mat'sMug I don't think so. What if I started writing an answer, and going for lunch? And anyway, I don't see an advantage

so that OP knows someone has a draft on their question when they consider clicking that "delete" link?

Zak
25 years old ^^

@Mat'sMug Well, if OP'S about to delete a fresh new question, and you stop just because you see an answer's on the way, maybe OP didn't understand the SE's mindset. And if you happen to delete and old answer-less question, that would be heck-of-a coincidence that you would be about to delete it and that someone's writing an answer at the same time

Zak
Honestly, if the OP's decided to delete, in how many of those situations would a draft notice actually change their mind?

^ that

It looks ok to me, maybe I missed something?

@Caridorc There are 2 VTCs on.
Some very iffy syntax in that question, I'm not sure it's valid either.
But I'm no Java guru.

@Mast I am neither, at first glance it looked working... But let's wait and see how votes develop

9:18 PM
My password decryptor is working in a single thread like lightning for three characters.
Now to add characters and increase the character set.

The VTC related to addAll is wrong. This is legal syntax
See commons.apache.org/proper/commons-lang/javadocs/api-2.6/org/… (and look for the addAll) function. It takes two lists and makes a new list!

@holroy I think it's the arguments of addAll they're concerned about.
Not that it takes 2 arguments, but what those arguments are.

The recursivity?

Is it just me or is the CDN borking???

@Mat'sMug No.

9:23 PM
@holroy look at the parentheses ArraysUtils.addAll(list,findOcc(int[] B);

Ah... My bad...

@vogel612 ACK - We're taking a look now, thanks for the heads up!

I'm in a pickle. I loop over the passwords, but the file names are competing with each other.

Competing?
Not conflicting?

So, it tries to create a file to see if it can extract the contents, and there is another file with that same name.
Yeah, conflicting.
Like, CrackMe3.txt.tmp.
And this is just running on a single thread.

9:39 PM
@Hosch250 have you tried putting random strings to the start of your new filenames? It should avoid conflicts

I can't - they are embedded in a zip file.
What I did try was outputting each to a different folder named to the number of ticks in the day.
That worked, but I'm getting a corrupted file message.
I know the file isn't corrupted.

@StackExchange sheeesh You're slow, it's already resolved again :D

JvRYou're right in sensing there has to be a better way to do this. Right now, you're setting static fields from within instance methods, which is rarely a good idea. In the active tab of Code Review, it says that a swift question is updated, but I can't see any change?! Is is just that I can't see something deleted (as I don't have the rep to see that here), or am I just really bad on locating the change? This is something that has puzzled me more than once to locate the latest change...

@holroy Active could also mean there was a comment, or an answer, or an edit on an answer.
It can mean any activity IIRC.

@holroy a code-dump non-answer was deleted

That was what I suspected... Cause I already looked over the comments, and changes to answers and edit on answers (or question)... It's a tiny bit annoying to see it be bumped on the activity list when you can't actually see the change...

what bumped it was the non-answer being posted actually

I just got to make more reviews, so I get the appropriate reps' and privilege levels! :-)

> In case you're not picking up on the theme of Ruby having a gajillion ways to do any given task: let's convert our loop yet again.
Not sure whether they're trying to be funny, sarcastic, both, or something else.

@IsmaelMiguel In my circle, we kind of focus on working from the rest, not working until you drop dead and need the rest.

@IsmaelMiguel Does your contract state you're forced to accept overtime?
It most probably doesn't.

I have to work till I can't because there is too much to do

So unless there is some emergency, it's your boss' problem, not yours.

10:34 PM
You really should take care of your self a little more! Because if you have to take a sick leave, both you and your firm is going to have a much bigger problem than you not working on your rest days!

@Mast It says that I have to work overtime if needed. But working 1 day and a half of extra tima and still working another day is too much
@holroy I could call it "vacations". Cause I didn't had them this year

@IsmaelMiguel Get yourself a better job soon.

I've been there where I did double days for a few weeks, and it really took a lot of effort and I was on the verge of snapping. I did however survive, and had a good talk with bosses, and one crucial element: I did have the Sundays off so that I could recover a little.
Without them, I would have snapped.
@IsmaelMiguel You do need to get rest at regular basis!

@Mast I wish there was something around here, and had enough money to live a month without working
@holroy I do. 3-5 hours a day. Except yesterday, I almost had to force myself to sleep
I've been living on a diet of monster, beer and fast food

I'm sorry to hear that, it doesn't sound like good living!

Q: Change the Reopen review queue to allow for a *different* close reason

MichaelTIn the Reopen Review Queue, add functionality for "leave closed" so that it may become "leave closed and change close reason." One of the things that is not uncommon at all in the reopen review queue is someone changing a question from say... 'unclear' to 'clear, but completely off topic', or on...

@Mat'sMug Upvoted!
@holroy It's ok. I'm kinda used to it. Hey, at least I don't work 24/7

If community can do it in the review queue, then perhaps moderators should be able to do it with a single little button, too? — Mat's Mug 47 secs ago

After wp_kses, you'll have a string that contains plaintext and the HTML tags + attributes you specify. It's certainly good enough for WordPress VIP's code review standards. — Dave Ross 51 secs ago

11:01 PM
@Duga wait, PHP has standards?

Yup, it does

TTQW

That escalated quickly

no, that's true. But there's nothing to stop a developer encapsulating the construction of a unique_ptr with a custom deleter within a documented utility function. This takes the call to new out of mainline code and keeps it safely in a known maintenance hotspot. I believe this what the OPs code reviewers are driving at. — Richard Hodges 48 secs ago

I've got a multithreaded version that returns a three-digit password of any combination of printable ASCII characters in less than a second.

MD5 hash?

Password-protected zip file.

AES-256 or ZipCrypto?

Q: Function that produces a^nb^nc^n

Michael ChavI'm trying to write a function that produces an infinite list containing strings of the form a^nb^nc^n. ZipCrypto.
And, I'd made a mistake.

11:35 PM
Which one?

I'd only been checking a range.

Range?

The range from bbb to ddd.
It should have been from " ` ` " to "~~~"

From space to ~~~?

Three spaces.

11:39 PM
So, only printable ASCII?
Oh

Yes.

How long does it take?

And, I was trying to use Tasks, but it isn't running multithreadedly.
Takes a while. The password is c@P

Is that in Java or C#?

C#

11:41 PM
Nice!
But do you have the code somewhere?

On my computer.
I'm working on making it multithreaded using Threads.

I never tried it

tasks aren't multithreaded
they're asynchronous

My knowledge of multithreading is the same as fishing: I recognize it's existence and that's it

11:43 PM
OK, so here is my current problem:
I need to start a bunch of threads in a loop and keep track of all them.
I need to have the successful one return the password as a string.
And, when that value comes back, all threads need to be stopped.

@JeroenVannevel I thought for something to be asynchronous it had to exist on multiple threads.

How many cores you have?

4

Hyper-Threading?

I can run 8 threads at once, I believe.

11:46 PM
Which CPU you have?

Intel i7.

Yup, probably Hyper-Thrading
Unless explicitly disabled

3630QM thing, 8 logical processors.

So, you have too much to do

you should be able to crank it up to 16 at least then, assuming you have 4 physicals

11:47 PM
@Vogel612 How?
The specs say a quad core.

@SirPython nope
asynchronous isn't parallel
parallel is a form of asynchronicity
or you know, change the terms. I always mix them up too
async tasks do this:
Task X | Task Y
x
x
             y
             y
x
             y
Parallel tasks do this:

@Hosch250 you seem to be right, according to the datasheet

Task X | Task Y
x            y
x            y
x            y

@JeroenVannevel except there was no such thing as true parallel for a long long time

Asynchroncity as we know it is very rapidly switching between multiple things

Oh, but they are not actually running "side by side", right?

True asynchroncity is using multiple threads but even then, eventually you'll always find a bottleneck where it comes together sometime

@Quill very late, but nonetheless

That makes sense. Thanks for that!

also: you shouldn't trust me when it comes to that subject
I suck at it
definitely verify with someone experienced

11:53 PM
@Quill huh, thanks for the link!
@JeroenVannevel Stephen Cleary has good explanations in his Concurrency in C# Cookbook
> Concurrency: Doing more than one thing at a time.
> Multithreading: A form of concurrency that uses multiple threads of execution.
> Parallel Processing: Doing lots of work by dividing it up among multiple threads that run concurrently.
> Asynchronous Programming: A form of concurrency that uses futures or callbacks to avoid unnecessary threads.
> Tip: As soon as you type new Thread(), it’s over; your project already has legacy code.

Can you put non-printable characters in a password, usually?

Stephen Cleary is THE TLP expert

(not sure why anyone would do that, just asking out of curiosity)

@Phrancis not usually, anti-XSS systems usually strip them out

Ah, makes sense
