Q: Powershell to break apart large flat files (e.g. csv)

JohnLBevanI created the below script to help break apart large flat files; to save myself effort opening files which are several gigs in a text editor and manually split them. So far I've only tested on sample files, so I can't yet comment on the performance, but wanted to share my work so far / get feedb...

Are HTML tags still valid if there is whitespace between the brackets and the name of the tag, like < script > ?

@Phrancis I think it's valid if there's a space after, not before

@Phrancis you could always try it on validator.w3.org
I don't think it is, though.

@SimonForsberg Gratz!

@FrancescoCasula: that's not a valid off-topic reason. Please review A guide to Code Review for Stack Overflow users; if the question is too broad or primarily opinion based here, you can close it for that reason. But a question is never off topic just because another SE site exists where it might also fit. — Martijn Pieters ♦ 33 secs ago

Hi guys, how strict should one be regarding broken code? In the following question the OP uses both letter and eng_letter regarding the same value within the get_letter() function. Should it be closed, or not? It already has two answers, and I'm contemplating on writing a third with some performance and style review.

Q: Translating from English to Entean

user3620828I wrote a python script that converts English to Entean language from an anime called "The Devil is a part timer". I am sloppy at coding and know that the script can be made better. In the anime, the language in Ente Isla is called Entean, which is basically most of the consonants in the English...

@holroy It's either broken or it isn't broken.

@holroy add a comment on it and ask for clarification

If there's an obvious copy+paste error, we sometimes fix it in the answer.

Both Barry and 200_success has answered it already, even though it is broken...

6:20 PM
@SimonForsberg yeap, we gonna bring some rubber ducks too

@SimonForsberg 10/10 would upvote again (if I just could)
2

@Mast It is broken (unless some strange scoping occurs on Python 3). Question is whether it should be closed or not...

On an unrelated note: I just found out that I still had tabs open from December 2014

@SimonForsberg It's too bad they took out the split on the magnifying glass, though

since we're talking about swag already: when will the design go live?

6:22 PM
@skiwi Does not surprise me.

@Vogel612 very soon. trust me.

@DanLyons blame @Ludwik

@DanLyons i was in tough situation.. some people liked split and some people didn't like split at all. some ppl saw C & R letters, some ppl saw C & Q letters and some ppl saw only Q letter... i'd really love to please everyone and it's very hard to find sweet spot in this situation. so i decided to get rid of that metaphor at all. so it's not only magnifying glass.

I can see why someone would see a Q, but I'm confused how they would see C + Q

@Ludwik I think you've made a good choice. I mean, I liked it split with an angle myself, but it's clearer to remove the split

6:26 PM
We could always take it to meta if that would be preferable.

@SimonForsberg yes, it's on me. someone had to make some decision :).

The thought did cross my mind, if perhaps "Code Quality" would be a better name for our site, considering that "Q"-like symbol.
4

@Mast like voting?

@Ludwik That's one option, yes.
Make it a , give all possibilities their own answer and see which scores best.
But that could be overcomplicating things.
I'm good at overcomplicating things.

@SimonForsberg Well, it's a bit late to change that eh :P
But you may be right ^^

6:29 PM
That ^^

Code Quality would see less input of broken questions I think

@Mast issue with voting is that there might be 51% of people who like particular solution and 49% of people who don't like it. technically it's all good, BECAUSE WE VOTED... but well, there's still 49% of unhappy people...

I think we make code more than slightly less wrong, but things are looking good.

@skiwi Well, we could create a new beta site keep it this way.

meh. I prefer Code Review, since Code Quality doesn't imply overthrowing the whole design

6:29 PM
@Ludwik Yea, as said, it could be overcomplicating things.

I think I have a problem... Looks like I have 300 tabs open of legitimate CR questions and my few months old self was thinking that I'd read all of them

Sounds like you got some catching up to do.

@skiwi so now they are closed?

@Ludwik Yeah... working on that now

Usually... When I don't get back to new tabs at the end of the day I assume they weren't interesting enough, and close them

6:32 PM
@skiwi ctrl+shift+w for great justice!

@skiwi CMD+SHIFT+T

@DanLyons meh, then the 2200+ other tabs also die.
whaaa a MAC!

@skiwi I'm quite sure that some site changed name after being graduated (I think it was Arqade), but sticking with the old name works fine of course :)

@Vogel612 2200+ more reasons to do it

@Vogel612 whoops. :D
for future: chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/tab-snooze/… (if you're on chrome)

6:33 PM
@Hosch250 add a comment about that on meta

@DanLyons You wretch. I tried it and it closed my browser.

I'm not sure if I can get lots of support though
I'm a professional tab hoarder

@skiwi You are paid to hoard tabs?

@Hosch250 you should still be able to restore them all with Ctrl + Shift + T

I think you are immature amateur.

6:34 PM
@Hosch250 Sometimes I do

@Vogel612 I didn't know about that.

Alt+F4 solves everything.

Hi @Ludwik, could you please address this comment:
Can you post a sample of what a code block would look like inside a block-quoted section, as well as a regular block-quote section. An example post would be: Comments Concerningrolfl yesterday

@janos I assume you don't quite like how it looks like currently in that post. am I correct?

Well, for one thing, the space on the bottom doesn't match the space on the top.

@Hosch250 sure, will work on that thing

It might be something you want to consider network wide.

but are there any other concerns about that?
@Hosch250 absolutely agree.

@Ludwik actually I'm not sure what @rolfl wanted with that. For my part, I'd like them distinguishable. You see, I use these two code styles in answers to highlight code that comes from OP, and code that I propose as a fix

I personally think they are fine as-is, except for the space.

the visual distinction is important, to make it perfectly clear what is bad and what is my recommendation

6:43 PM
^^ that

for sure we gonna update that spacing. (maybe not in first release of site's design, because it has to be fixed across whole network which is damn huge so we need to make lots of tests)

Quotes and code blocks are clearly distinguishable, and the colors aren't a terrible match.

in the screenshot in the meta post, we only see the <pre> code style example, not the <blockquote><pre> code style example
ah yes, there's also the <blockquote> case too (not code)

if you have more feedback about quoted code blocks, it would be great to have separate meta post about that. again: we may want to work on that across whole network which probably will take some time, but we're open to any suggestions.

@Ludwik I'm not sure what feedback you mean. The screenshots you gave contain only code block examples, there are no examples of quoted code blocks and quoted blocks, so we cannot give feedback on those

6:48 PM
@SimonForsberg that's the coolest damn Rubberduck I've ever seen!

@janos in initial version of site we gonna keep current styling for those elements. so i was refering to feedback based on current styling.

@Ludwik basically, we want quote blocks to remain as they are now.
Oh! So, yeah. We're probably good then. =)

@RubberDuck yeap :)
@RubberDuck i think i haven't touched them at all (code)

Q: Code Prettify - Choose your favorite or make your own!

PhrancisWe all like code, let's face it. And with Code Review's upcoming graduation "colors" I'm sure that many would like for the large amount of code that is posted daily in questions and answers to look top-notch. Whether Stack Exchange would be able to get CR our own code formatting is a bit up in ...

@Hosch250 It'd be pretty easy to include a font selector also, I bet
For the weirdos like me who prefer Monaco over Consolas, or the old-school who prefer Courier New or *shudder* FIXEDSYS

@Phrancis I'm against line numbers.
@Phrancis FIXEDSYS is life!

@Mast That's fine, just go vote on the meta post about those, and maybe make a comment on the design post maybe explaining why (since all the attention is centered there right now)
@Mast I have a colleague who uses that in Management Studio, it's horrid when he does a screenshare during a call

@Phrancis Because the risk of them being copy-able is too high.

@Mast Yeah that issue in particular was a bit controversial, and so I did some testing
Appears to affect only IE users right now, but it's possible that could change in the future
(not that affecting only IE users is not a problem, mind you)

@Phrancis I could live with that.
in OLog - OGame logger and personal assistant, Oct 29 at 14:38, by Mast
As long as FF and Chrome can run it, we should be fine. Nobody likes IE anyway.

7:38 PM
LOL
I wonder how MS Edge browser would behave, I don't think that was out at the time we tested
I'd be willing to bet it would have the same issue as IE11 though, seems to be systemic
One thing that would be really badass though is if there was simply a selector on the post or user settings, to enable or disable line numbers. It's only a small CSS setting so it would be a relative breeze to implement

@Phrancis That would be great.
But I think that should be a feature request on MSO or MSE.

Yeah

Feature request: repeat on YouTube.

I definitely think the code highlighting post is more important, I'll reformat the A a bit to reflect that

This question looks like it might be a pretty good fit for Code Review.SE, provided that (a) you want every aspect of your code reviewed, not just some, (b) your code is already working, and (c) you're asking for a review of concrete, real code, not abstract design (whether or not it's expressed as code). If you agree with all of those, please read about what's on topic, and, if your question fits that, delete it here and repost it on CR. — Phrancis 35 secs ago

Missing paren.
Probably suppose to come after 25, but realized it wasn't needed without removing the first.

Would that not fail to compile?

I don't think this would fare very well on Code Review, until a more substantive piece of code is included for context... Also, language is not specified. I think this really is better on Stack Overflow. — Phrancis 51 secs ago

8:38 PM
I'm pretty sure it is psuedocode, and it will fail to compile.
Except, my TI 36x2 calculator (normal calculator, not programmable nor graphing) allows you to leave open parens.
It closes them automatically by appending them to the end of the equation.
That is one handy feature when you run out of space and are typing in a calculation without knowing how many ((( you need at the beginning exactly.
So, you could type (((1+2)/3 - (3-1))/4

@Hosch250 My TI-84 also allowed that
Maybe all did?

I don't know.
I don't remember whether our ancient graphing calculator does. My mom had that thing when she was in school, IIRC, and she is in her 50's now.
