Q: How can I identify and surface events happening at specific time intervals?

Tyler WoodHere is some code I wrote to surface Mint.com transactions that occur at monthly intervals, in order to identify subscriptions I may be paying for without realizing it. I'd like to have some friends try this out as well, but Pandas is not a very common package for non-python users, and it's requ...

qedPlain old quick sort in java. Any suggestions for improvement are welcome. public static int[] concatArrays(int[] a1, int[] a2) { int n1 = a1.length; int n2 = a2.length; if(n1 == 0) return a2; if(n2 == 0) return a1; int n = n1 + n2; int counter = 0; int[] result = ne...

@rolfl Is it just me or is Isaac the only one who is really against your suggestion of including the weekday?

There's a now-deleted answer on Meta.SE that is from Code Maverick too

ok, I can't see that

@Phrancis Why are strings orange on the black background? Was red a problem...?

I was going from screenshots mostly from Visual Studio where they are colored orange

I like Xcode. Although, I don't like the font in that screenshot (google image search)
(I'm not upstairs on my Mac, otherwise, I'd screenshot my actual theme)

I'll put up some CSS source on Meta a bit later tonight, if you'd like to make your own. I didn't have a code sample for Obj-C but if you have one I can add it to my source HTML for previews

Interestingly, with Xcode, you can give built-in types a different color from user types.

@nhgrif Yeah that font is horrid
Code blocks look awesome with Monaco on OS X, for sure

Aha, this is better:

Q: code for Taylor expansion on arctan

Jake bieleIm am trying to write a code that gives the value of pi from the acrtan taylor expansion and using the fact that arctan(1)=pi/4. i need to the code to loop increasing in the number of terms until it compares with the c code built in code for arctan correctly for 7 s.f. this is only a small part o...

At work, I built a VS theme to match this Xcode theme. ;)

That looks pretty nice... gotta love the Chinese comments ;D

Big difference here versus the VS theme you used? Keywords are magenta.
So they're a distinctly different color from the types.
Where as the VS theme has only slightly different colors for keywords versus types.
But you also notice in that screenshot, the "HelpViewController" at the top is green because it's a custom user type, where as "NSString" is blue because it's a built-in type. And "BOOL" is pink because it's a primitive type.
@SimonAndréForsberg What's more important is knowing the differences, because in practice, avoiding them all is impossible.

@nhgrif Yes that's quite cool. Prettify is a bit (read: a lot) more "dumb" but I think you could come up with something at least "close enough"

Q: C# memory managment

ShiroWhich one is better for the memory ? A) public void A() { int x = 0; for(int i = 0 ; i < 1000000000 ; i ++;) { x = Math.Log(i); } } B) public void B() { for(int i = 0 ; i < 1000000000 ; i ++;) { int x = Math.Log(i); } } I am going to use a lot of...

It also doesn't have a language handler for Obj-C specifically, but it does good in general with any C-like languages

Morning all

Hey!

@nhgrif I'm an optimist :)

That sounds dangerous.

Guys, I have answered something quite specific about extracting DB constraints applied on the table in (SO) and following that I have this comment (after the thank you)
Ok...I have no chance to do this! I have no idea how to begin...I deleted everything and started again,but I am confused...My idee is to do a Form and put there 1 listBox that contains the name of the tables and a button: "Add constraint" ... but i don't know how and where to display the columns that don't have domain constraint. and before that,I have to make the button work and i have to extract the min and max values and add the corresponding constraint...:(( — Mirela 5 hours ago
How can I help this person>
Should I ask him to post another question? or...
cuz it seems he has more solid problems

Sounds like they need to Smoke The Documentation™ if you ask me...

which might need something like me pointing him to some references to read stuff but I don't think commenting on the question is a good idea and I doubt he can attend chats since he has 13 reps
:)))) Yep @Phrancis

@SimonAndréForsberg Oh, I read it.

I don't want to do his homework for him but at the same time don't see any problems pointing him to some reads then he can learn and come back with solutions

It made sense.

10:42 PM
@Mehrad There is so much documentation on MSDN about C#, OLEDB and SQL Server, I think providing a few links in the comments (or edit them into the answer) would seem appropriate, if not even going above-and-beyond!

@Phrancis, Yep. I think commenting shouldn't be bad. Comments are there for similar reasons after all. If it's too long I'll add an extension to my answer. However those info wouldn't be related to the main purpose of the question. Thanks

Anyone around know anything about Lisp?

I know that a good deal of languages were based on/inspired by it.

Q: HTTP status code for mobile clients

NerdI was having a debate with one of the platform engineers (I am a mobile dev), about the codes being returned. Q: Nim game in Haskell implementing optimal strategy

Ted SperlingLink to code on Github I was inspired by Stas Kurlin's Nim game to write my own. I'm new to Haskell, and quite unfamiliar with monads, do notation, and -- in general -- functional design patterns. In the game of nim, two players begin with a number of sized piles, e.g., piles of stones. Each pl...

@CaptainObvious Off-topic.
@CaptainObvious Not sure.

If it's off-topic, why don't you vote to close it?

I was going to, but you already had closed it.

@Phrancis What's your question?

Reason I'm asking about Lisp is prettify has a special CSS class for brackets (parentheses) and I was curious why what would be...
/* Lisp open bracket */
  .opn {
    color: #333333;
  }
/* Lisp close bracket */
  .clo {
    color: #333333;
  }
I looked at some Lisp code and noticed the massive amount of parentheses so I'm guessing there's something special about them...?

In LISP, everything is a list. You make lists using parentheses. So, yes, there are a lot of them, heavily nested.

10:53 PM
Ah ok, so I'm guessing Prettify has a special formatter so it overrides the "punctuation" class when LISP language is set/detected then

Basically, you write your program as an abstract syntax tree, and the parentheses are the only thing that prevent everything from becoming one big blob.

So, everything is a list, and a list of lists, and lists of lists of lists, etc.?

Right.

They should have called that LIST rather than LISP :P

Cool. I'll have to get a code sample, how about this ;)
(defun is-multiple (i against)
  (= (mod i against) 0))
(defun num-action (i)
  (cond ((and (is-multiple i 3) (is-multiple i 5)) (print "FizzBuzz"))
    ((is-multiple i 3) (print "Fizz"))
    ((is-multiple i 5) (print "Buzz"))
    (T (print i))))
(dotimes (i 101) (num-action i))
> Lisp's detractors tend to describe the syntax as "weird" and "annoying." Lisp, they say, must stand for Lots of Irritating Superfluous Parentheses.

Garme I'm writing chat application.I would like to know if there are some problem in this codes that I fix poblem. This function sends message: function sendMessage() { var text = $('#messageBox').val(); $('#messageBox').val(''); if($('.context').scrollTop() + $('.context').innerHeight() >...

BTW @Mehrad I can't tell you how useful your IDE screenshots were, I'll have some Prettify implemented samples later tonight when I get home, so stick around :D

@Phrancis, no worries. Ping me anytime if you need more.
However unlike real programers I sleep though :D but I'll get back to you the moment I wake up.

11:20 PM
Monking!
@CaptainObvious I am getting competition!
Oh wait, it said box, I thought it said bot..

I'm out of votes.
You're lucky, @SimonAndréForsberg, you can just vote (and star too) with @Duga when you run out.

@Hosch250 I do not vote, and nobody have taught me to star anything yet

Oh.

wait wait wait ... Is @SimonAndréForsberg == @Duga ? :D

@Mehrad @Duga is a bot run by @SimonAndréForsberg
Triple ping.

11:27 PM
@Hosch250 or @Simon is a bot run by me

NOOOOOOOO

+170 with 30 minutes left.....

Sorry, I'm out (as I said above).

@Duga How are you mate?
@Hosch250 laters

@Mehrad I'm fine, I hope you are too

11:30 PM
@Mehrad I think he meant out of votes, not out as in out....

@Duga, do you think @Hosch250 is out of votes or he is leaving ?

I'm out of votes.

:) I am investigating the bot project

I'm reading the Phaedo, trying to find a section that sounds like Plato's theory of Recollection.
Actually, just a section of the Phaedo.
Lucky Phaedo: "PHAEDO: I have nothing at all to do"

@SimonAndréForsberg is Duga the same as Russian radar or it stands for something different?

11:34 PM
2 days ago, by Simon André Forsberg
@Mat'sMug when we say "det får la duga", it means "it's good enough". when we say "en bot som heter duga" it means "a really good bot" ("som heter duga" litterary means "who's name is Duga")
It's a Swedish word.

@janos - you beat me this time ..... by 13 seconds or so.

11:47 PM
oooh, +180, getting exciting.

13 minutes left.

@Mehrad Sleep... what's that?
