this?
ah there
weird

Is something different?
It looks a little different, but I can't put my finger on it. Maybe I'm just tired.

monkey feared he lost all his SE rep for a moment

When you type 4 lines of text, or an image, or something, chat has 'always' included your network-wide rep...

Oh.

5:06 AM
Youc an do that with shift-enter
like this
See?
But, it appears to sometimes 'fail'.

I see.

I'm not sure it's a good thing that OP likes my answer...
I only ever included TKey because of the possibility of strange / composite keys. Your answer is incredibly interesting. I think it should work with all use cases. I will play around with it. Maybe post some gists. — Issa Fram 4 mins ago

chat is the sound of a single ak47 round being fired.

Q: Refactoring a simple Ruby CLI program

Jikku JoseI tried to help someone in Stackoverflow with a refactoring exercise. Did many changes to his original code and made a somewhat decent solution (at least in my eyes). Was thinking, whether someone can critique on my implementation.

Wow, I wonder why in the world Fermat didn't write his proof somewhere else?
He died with the knowledge, and it wasn't solved again for 357 years.

I use this for questions I want to keep.

Sure... @Hosch250 . thanks for having a look though

5:52 AM
@Mehrad Is the code compilable?

@Phrancis do you want me to remove the OP from the whole earth for you?

I mean, if I create a WPF application, can I paste that code in and have it run?
Or are some essential parts missing?

it's all UI stuff that I was asking about @Hosch250 so I wouldn't classify it as complicated but it's definitely a very long question to go through

@Mehrad I'd rather if they just improved their code lol

as you wish @Phrancis :D

5:54 AM
I know, but I would like to run it and see the UI working.
When I started WPF, I found that there are different ways to do things, and some are better/easier than others.
But those ways are not always the ways that come up in searches because people focus on the hard parts.

@Hosch250 unfortunately not. there are so many classes involved which I just couldn't bring in to the question

OK, I see.

First 15 or so LOC I had to walk away for a moment...
CREATE Procedure OutputProcedure

  )
AS

select 'OUTPUTPROCEDURECALLED'
declare @maxvalue int
DECLARE @variableTable TABLE (
    idx int identity(1,1),

I agree with that @Hosch250

5:56 AM
I am quite comfortable with what I have done except that new grouping issue is really bugging me and I want to know if somebody done something similar lately that can go Ah... I know what's that... DO this :D
Can you tell me what's the major problem here @Phrancis. I know enough Sql to make my way home and back

Um... everything?

haaaaaaaaahahaha...

Every RDBMS but TSQL would have throw... hmm... At least 3-4 syntax errors

@Mehrad Could you maybe provide an image of what your app is doing?

that doesn't like a compilable code them :D @Phrancis

Q: Wiring CollectionView and updating itself without the need for Refresh()

MehradI have been using your expertise developing my application using parts of WPF that I have never touched before. OK, thanks.

It's changed a little bit from since but mostly the same.
That looks like somebody would do var var = "var"; in C# @Phrancis

OK, so I assume you know about OnPropertyChanged?

SELECT @colVar = matchvalue FROM @variableTable WHERE idx = @counter
set @sql = 'declare' +' ' + '@Temp'+ @colVar
exec @sql
select @sql as 'SQLFORDECLARATIONS'
ORLY @sql nice variable name

6:03 AM
@Hosch250 yes, but still lots to learn

Why in the world are you manually updating your properties?
You should have a class of all the data needed, and bind an ObservableCollection of that class to your ListView.

@Hosch250 but if I use ObservableCollection alone I wouldn't be able to filter or sort my collection

Yes you can.

That's why I am feeding it to the var of a type CollectionView. If that's what you mean
Oh.

Have an ObservableCollection of the data displayed.
Update it as needed.

6:07 AM
DECLARE @sSQL NVARCHAR(2000), @Where NVARCHAR(1000) = ' '
WAT

Cuz when I wanted to learn how to filter my collection all the result were pointing to CollectionView usage

Never heard of it.
@Mat'sMug is good at this.
He can probably help you better than I can.

He has a quick look before he left but didn't comment on the Collection

He'll see the ping.
Maybe leave a comment on his answer too.

I will. need to find an answer for this :)

6:09 AM
In my WPF app, I have a ListBox bound to a collection of menu things.
When one of them is clicked, that menu drops open and the other closes.

@Phrancis seems your eyes are about to pop out from that single line of horror.

It is a Windows Store app, so I don't have TreeView.
I just manually update the collection with each selection if I need to, and the ListBox automatically updates.

So is it like an <Expander> ?

I don't know, I've never heard that term either.
I'm not that advanced.

Yep, WPF in desktop has some different terminology

6:12 AM
Actually, I'm not advanced at all.
More features and stuff too, so what is standard in desktop, I might not even know about.
I would probably make an ObservableCollection that is bound to your ListView, and update the OC as needed.
The ListView will be taken care of automatically then.

This is an expander

Oh, yeah.

When you click on it, it's takes it's contents under itself and hides them kinda

Like this (sneak preview):

I might eventually take that approach.

6:15 AM
The released part is broken at the moment, so you get a sneak preview.

yep

So that listbox is bound to an OC that is updated as needed.
We have company.
Hi, @chillworld!
Leaving now.
See you later.

@skiwi I have a story..... about my very first week at university.

ohhh the monkey is telling a story!
attentively sits down, staring @ rolfl with wide eyes

I went to an all-boys boarding school for high school, and when I started university, the only people I was 'friends' with when I stated was a bunch of guys from high school, but not people who were close friends at school high school. We were only 'hanging out' because we knew each other more than anyone else....
At the 'welcome to university' party, we were in a group when a tall, beautiful, and somewhat out-of-our-league girl wals up to us.... and says:

@rolfl I've heard the craziest stories of people being on their first week at university and fraternities...

hey, you're Rolf, right?
The other guys were all paying attention now.... and I'm like "yeah"?
She says, "It's me, bronwyn, do you remember me?"
I'm like: "no".
She's: "Well, you're the first guy I kissed. I still remember it! It was fun!".

Q: UI for adding roles and modules to a user list

ascendantofrainI have a small UI that involves adding roles and modules to a user database array. The interface works as is, no problem at all, but it seems to have a bit of 'duplicate' code that I was hoping I could get some advice on ways to refactor, if at all possible. function Db() { var self = this;...

1:19 PM
Ouch!
And then what?

Yeah, it took a few minutes to get the story right.... it turns out, that when I was in Nursery School (kindergarten...).... there was a game of "kissing catchers".

holy....

Those were the days.....
When she told the story, I remembered the occasion clearly, but I would never have put her face to it.
Unfortunately, for me, in that group of guys, well, they did not let me forget.... some with admiration, some with malice ;-)

So you asked her to make sure you would never forget it again, right?

now there's just missing the part when you say: "and that kids, is how I got to know your mother"

1:22 PM
I wish I was that suave. We did become friends of sorts again though.
I would see here in various social groups.
As for meeting my kids mother, well, that's a much better story.
4

(Are we also gonna hear it?)

Sure... I was living in London, I went with a friend on a ski trip for a week to Austria (Hopfgarten) on a bus tour (Contiki FWIW).
There was a group of English girls on it, and there was a really tall red-head (curly) with freckles that caught my interest from day 1. BINGO!
I weazeled my way in to the same group/lessons that she and a few other people were in, and for a few days it was a lot of fun..... the flirting was a group activity... there were 7 in the group, including two English girls, two Australian guys a canadian guy, and another New-Zealand girl.
We could all ski well.
Unfortunately, Alex picked one of the other Australian guys (James, you bastard)....
and my hopes were dashed..... bu.... previously....
the canadian guy was there with a girl.... and I pegged them as being an item.
she could barely ski.... and I met her on day 1 in a tangled mess going down a slope that was too hard, and icy, and in front of a snow plow
I helped her get her skiis off, and back to the top of the ski lift, and rode the lift down with her.

The suspense is killing me! Which girl does Rolf end up with?

then discovered she was with the Canadian guy, and it was off limits.

I know, I know. Slow down and let you tell the story.....

1:32 PM
they were room-sharing and everything.
The guy was a real jerk though, pointing at girls on the slopes, "Check hour her ass", that sort of stuff.
Turns out they were long time friends, he was in a long term relationship "on the sly" with a greek girl who was not supposed to date non-greeks, etc.
Bottom line is that he was "vetting me"...... and apparently I passed.
So, when Alex got together with James, Lee was there to be "plan B".

Once I discovered she was not two-timing her "boyfriend", which took some convincing.... it was all easy from there.
She was living in London too (unfortunately, for those who know london, Ilford and Wimbledon are not exactly close).
Within 2 weeks we were both pretty sure "this was it", and were looking for a place to share. Within 2 months I had my immigration papers in for canada (Her Visa only had a year left).

That's a really sweet story @rolfl.
Wait, so you moved all the way from London to Canada for this girl?!

Within 6 months we had it all figured out.

Ballsy cuz. I can dig it.

1:38 PM
Just had to wait for the papers to come through.
Then, because thngs work this way, I proposed at Alex's house in bournemouth.
Alex moved to Australia to be with James, but that did not work out too well for her, she lasted a year there.
Came back to the UK, met a doctor 2 weeks later.
2 weeks after that, the doctor sailed to antarctica for 18 months ;-)
3

@rolfl That sounds rather fast!

They married when he got back, now have two kids, really cute red hair on the girl.
They came to Canada for a year while he did a residency.
now back in the UK.

Quite sure my story will never end up being that cool

Kris, the canadian jerk, married the greek girl. They're really happy. And, though I still don't believe it, he's actually a nice guy.
Lee's best friend.

May I ask around what age you all were?

1:43 PM
I was... 27 Lee 26
Hmm... I was 26, turned 27 the day Lee and I 'got together' on the trip.
Happy birthday.

Still takes me two or three times to read through the whole story, to understand it all

See if I can dig up some pictures that are not incriminating

Ok, when you are 27 I can see you going through the whole process quite fast

Me witht he goggles in the middle, Alex to the right. Lee could not ski as well as us, she took the picture.
The Australians on the left, the Canadian in the front. My SA friend on the left.

Q: 2D Platformer Collision Detection/Resolution

Reyer SwengelI am working on a 2D tile based platformer and was hoping to get someone to review my collision detection. I've only included the X collision check since the Y is essentially the same. Any suggestions/criticisms are appreciated. // Corrects X movement if a collision occurs. private void ...

It wasn't fast because of our age. It was just 'like that', and in fact we both had to slow it down a whole lot. The immigration to Canada was a real hand-brake on the process. I could have told you after 2 weeks that it was just "right". Then, when we did get to canada, we were engaged for a full year because we discovered we were socially not allowed to get married quietly... and had to have a full wedding.

@rolfl heh... I was the same age when I quit my job and moved several states away to be with my college sweetheart.
We just got married this year.

When we did get married, we had 43 people fly in from out of the country to be there... it was remarkable. Including all the people except the Australians, in the picture above.

That's crazy, over here most stories are dull...

What, a South African, and a Canadian, meeting skiing in Austria? That's normal, right?
3

@rolfl Right ;)

Now I am a South African who taps trees and makes maple syrup with a horse-drawn sleigh and snow shoes.
My wife's parents live a somewhat rural existence.
Off to get some sap
(neighbour is the one who owns the horses.... not my inlaws....)

@rolfl That's what all Canadians do, right?

Even for Canadians, I do odd things. The people across the road are Mennonites. The neighbour ploughs his field with his horses still. It's all somewhat backwards there.

And I'm 21 here and nothing interesting has happened in my life... I'm dull

Ahh, but 21 is a good age. Got my first job, in a city 1400km away, went from there to the UK, then to Canada.... Additionally, you have to find ways to make the day-to-day process more interesting. Consider what you do on Code Review, for example, you're the Java8 expert. Hardly boring.

I know a lot of people who would kill to be 21 again. I'm not one of them. Oh, sure... there were lots of adventures, but I'm kind of like Bilbo. Had great fun and wondrous adventures as a young lad, but am quite content to study and smoke away my old age.

@rolfl Finding ways to make the day-to-day process more interesting, you nailed it right there
I know a way, but it takes two to tango

@rolfl I hadn't noticed that, but I did notice something was different. I would have thought that it was a fake SO site if you hadn't linked me to it...
The buttons in the editor are different as well
Monking,
I got the CSS Tag Badge too BTW.Normal
thank you all who have Faith in my CSS skills

Q: The block should return the user's current_active_role

notaceodef current_active_role user_roles.each do |r| if r.is_active_role return r end end return nil end The block above returns whatever the user's currently active role is. There are User, UserRoles (lookup table), and Roles tables. I'm looking for a more concise way to say "go through...

@CaptainObvious Should... that smells on CR

The story of how I met my wife is no where near as strange as @rolfl, but it is similar in that we're from totally different cultures.

What, you actually scored a martian? You hubbler you!

@rolfl You have that backwards. I'm the Martian.

Sorry, of course, men are from mars....

Man, I wish all SO questions looked like this. — RubberDuck 5 mins ago

But hey, you cannot just go around claiming you have a cool story and not tell it :)

Raced a truck.
I won.
