I might post a question later for an odd kind of problem, gotta make it work first (I hate Access SQL, it's ugly)
Can't indent and can't markdown, and there are brackets and parentheses all over the place :|

Q: Generic cached value class mimicking Lazy<T>

YuckBefore I wrote this I searched and found a number of solutions that make use of a caching provider to handle a set of items. I felt that was too cumbersome of an approach and set out to create a class that could cache a single value, similar to the way Lazy<T> manages the initialization of a sing...

A: How can I Shorten/Refactor this Jquery

Malachi@Paritosh has suggested some code to change what you have done, but doesn't explain it at all. The suggestion is that you use a loop (function loop() { $('.elements').each(function() { var $self = $(this); $self.parent().queue(function (n) { $self.fadeIn(2000).delay(200).fadeOut(200...

@rolfl if I use all my stars in chat for the day and you go back and remove my stars, will I get them back to give them again?

not sure, have you used them all yet?

Gareth ReesMethod decomposition looks like the way to go here: def _try_post(self, json): """Try posting the message (unless this timed out previously). Return True if successful, False otherwise. """ if not self._timedOut: try: self._post(json) return True ...

and even before I finished he posted a much better one
is it weird if I post and delete right after?

Nice to have Gareth active again.... must have been on holiday.

we both backed off for a bit.

@Malachi we shall see ;-)

I am going to post what I used to retrieve some information from one of the oldest DBs we have here, it's gone through the Legacy system and into the new system, so it recieved transformed information from a mainframe DB and now takes information transformed from another SQL DB. it looks clean to me, but I am sure there is a better way
@janos Dang it I ran myself out of stars earlier
@janos @Josay's going to beat us both if I don't work some magic on some bounty questions soon....lol

@Malachi You lived in a cave? :)

3:55 PM
@Malachi please tag me when you do, I'd like to see that, haven't got to work much with legacy systems/data

You can never plug in the new USB 3.1 connectors the wrong way anymore

@skiwi I have fallen in love with USB 3.1

@Malachi yeah probably he will :(

isn't there a funny XKCD comic about plugging in a USB?
@Phrancis going to need a Jamalization on the title for sure

gotta go, catch you later

@rolfl "The Wall" version of that query is much funnier :)

@rolfl Re: our discussion about pivots, I thought you may find this interesting. That's how you do it with RDBMS other than SQL Server
And it may work good with SQL Server too, I find it much easier to read
select
CompanyName,
SUM(CASE WHEN (action='EMAIL') THEN 1 ELSE 0 END)AS Email,
SUM(CASE WHEN (action='PRINT' AND pagecount=1) THEN 1 ELSE 0 END)AS Print1Pages,
SUM(CASE WHEN (action='PRINT' AND pagecount=2) THEN 1 ELSE 0 END)AS Print2Pages,
SUM(CASE WHEN (action='PRINT' AND pagecount=3) THEN 1 ELSE 0 END)AS Print3Pages
from Company
group by CompanyName

@skiwi Not a day too soon, really.

4:05 PM
@Phrancis Phrancis... that is why the pivot function exists, because people used to do pretty much exactly that.....
I have written code like that many times.
Also, it was much harder before the case statement.

Makes sense
How would you do that without CASE?

clever group by's that allow you to multiply by zero when not needed.

That sounds like a PITA

^^^^ that

Ugh - it's only Tuesday and it's not even lunch time yet...

4:09 PM
@SimonAndréForsberg I've wasted at least a few minutes, or hours(?) of my life on wrongly plugged USB plugs

@hoosierEE - this makes me curious. Let's take it up in chat - the 2nd Monitor? — rolfl ♦ 9 secs ago
Hey there, @hoosierEE

@rolfl I am using that code right now.

The part that has me concerned is the & size at the end

4:26 PM
Not Java, however, C/C++.
But it should be the same, I think.

that's fine, but, for example, if size is 16 (0x10), then the & size will never return set bits on the low nibble.
so, if the (step % size + size) & size; for a 16-member array....
has a step of say 1, and the step % size is 1, + size is 17, and then the & size returns 16.

I would have expected that to be just cursor = (step + size) % size;

me too ....
assuming size > 0

Ah crap. Should be % size at the end.

4:30 PM
fixing.

That I can agree with

@hoosierEE - probably too late for you... I can fix it though....

Although the first modulo is not important then I think, or is it?

It's completely unnecessary.

No, the modulo inside the parenthesis is not important.

4:31 PM
I also deleted a few of the other comments.

Meh, shall I leave the typo up for posterity or make it look like I know what I'm doing... ?

In my code I have: cursor = (cursor + data.length - 1) % data.length;
I edited your comment, @hoosierEE
refresh the page.

ah nice.

(and perhaps delete your other ocmment?)

4:33 PM
done

The first modulo is useful if the negative step is way less than -size

Actually we should stop saying modulo. In C-family languages the % operator returns the remainder.

for example, if you have a 'virtual' cursor of -10 on an array of size 3...

Which is why X % N returns negative for X < 0

the first % will return -1, and then add 3, you get 2.

4:35 PM
@rolfl SQL Server case-sensitive using strings in where clause?

in my case, I am certain that the step will never be < -1

	'/CountyName COUNTY TREASURER',
	'/CountyName County Treasurer',

@Josay is Online!!!
@Phrancis I figured that they might show up differently depending on what version of SQL the DB is running, and I didn't want to risk it being this system makes the most revenue for the Judicial System

If you happen to index into your array with X < -N you'll get a negative value, but if you're sure that can't happen then use the simpler statement.

@Phrancis make sure to Ping me I am at work, and going to be leaving for lunch in about 20 minutes

4:37 PM
@Phrancis That always sucks.

@hoosierEE So modulo and remainder is not the same thing?

definitely not.

@Malachi I didn't mention it, but you could use UPPER() for that.

@hoosierEE modulo = always positive, while remainder can be negative? Is that the difference?

@SimonAndréForsberg It is for integer math.... it gets dicey when languages decide they can do integer math on doubles.....

4:39 PM
Simon, the definition is often based on language specification, rather than pure mathematical definition

@SimonAndréForsberg what @ckuhn203 said.

@ckuhn203 that is a good idea, but wouldn't the function take more processing then the extra item in the IN condition because I would have to use it in the Where Clause?
sorry but I had to share this pic

The java definition of % (the remainder operator) is here: docs.oracle.com/javase/specs/jls/se8/html/…

@Malachi I honestly don't know. You'd have to look at the execution plans to find out. I would think that it would only calculate the scalar value once though.
As opposed to calculating it for every line.
Nope. Nope. I've got it backwards. You're right.
It would have to Upper() each result to compare to the like.
Or IN.

@ckuhn203 like would worse

Also, I want to know whether you removed the lo-pass filter from your Nikon or osmething ;-)
Oh, and my best friend inSouth Africa spent years using remote sensing to study natural, and controlled burns in the Kruger National Park

We fly research grade cameras on aircraft. They are all sensitive in the infrared so we get bands from red to thermal infra red and use them primarily for research int wild fires.

Q: Clean code attempt on codechef.com FCTRL

M KI have been reading Clean Code and decided to start working problems on Codechef.com attempting to apply some of what I have learned. My question is do I seem to be on the right track or am I way off? If you are interested the problem description can be found here: http://www.codechef.com/probl...

OK, so the camera-side of the interface is constant, so changing the protocol is not easy, or impossible.
Is there a way to reset the interface?
The problem you will run in to is when the camera goes quiet, or out-of-sync with the control.

Our equipment was really aging, our main computer is now 15 years old or so. A few years ago I presented my boss with a plan to upgrade and he said 'Make it so." it was apparent that with new cameras (we call them imaging radiometerts as we have narrow band pass filters in them) would require more band width and a single computer as a controller would not work.

6:25 PM
makes sense.
well, modern computers should have no problem, but still, i prefer the single-responsibility thing
Ho frequent are the images taken? multiple-per-second?
The data for each image is less than 0.5MB.

@ckuhn203 There's even a site for them: Database Administrators

So I had to teach myself Java as our contract engineer doesn't know much C. Really should have learned it earlier, I think. In any case I did develop a distributed computer system with one PC-104 computer to control 1 or 2 cameras, bought the machines and new cameras (we had to build one from the sensor up), programmed the communications using generic Java sockets, and tested it.

Then! our funding really dropped and our aircraft lost an engine just after take off. We were not allowed to repair it so we have been attempting to get the use of another aircraft. That changed the focus to just getting our thermal camera to work.

6:31 PM
ouch. OK.

@Malachi You're right. Nice catch. I wonder though why they didn't just put up a "You have to turn right"-sign (yes, we have such signs around here)

Sounds like a job for a drone ... ;-)

We realized that installing a workstation in an aircraft was not the best way to go (or continue) and should probably use a web page to control the camera but I knew nothing about that except that more than one program would be running at the same time.

Where's @Mat'sMug? I found something he'd be interested in. msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee199159.aspx

@NateLockwood I'm just playing with something here, let me put together a code drop for you, and I'll link you to it on your question... sometime in about 8 or so hours....

6:34 PM
Then I found Google's Dart. I immediately stopped everything (the camera was still being built) and learned enough Dart, HTML5, and CSS3 to write a web page and a server complex.
OK. What's a code drop?

I'll mock up a device/camera, and then get a driver to communicate to it in what I consider to be a stable/reliable way.
then I'll point you to the code, probably on github.

I'm in California so 8 hours is about 8pm. I'll log on then.
I should mention that the camera communicates via LAN, and has movable filters, and two modes of calibration that I need to control. And I have no access to the code on it.

OK, I get that there's 5 commands to invoke, each returns an ACK, and one of thm returns data as well
I'll work around wha tyou have posted here....

Actually one command returns 4 bytes of data, another 8 bytes of status data, and the third returns the image.
There are other commands that return ACKNO: 5 to position the filters, 1 each to open and close a door with a special back for through filter calibration, and one each for two calibration modes. distinctrow Active.Serial_Number as 'Serial_Number'
, Active.Contract_Number as 'Active Contract'
, Cancel.Contract_Number as 'Cancelled Contract'
from
  Sales_by_Dealer as Active
left join
  Sales_by_Dealer as Cancel
  on Active.Serial_Number = Cancel.Serial_Number
  and Active.Sequence_Number = Cancel.Sequence_Number
  and Active.Contract_Number <> Cancel.Contract_Number
where Cancel.Status = 'CAN'
order by Active.Contract_Purchase_Date DESC;
