@CaptainObvious The second one, despite the upvote, sounds off-topic.
It's example code, not real code.
Seems to ask for a generic solution for the problem, more than a specific review.

@Morwenn: I believe the OP has a very real problem with this and wants to improve upon the current solution

@Vogel612 Yes, was busy fo r abit
What's not working with it?

@StackExchange Wait you're not @CaptainObvious

it says "Can't make a reference to non-static type T" or alternatively gives "misplaced constructs" with quick-fix: "Infer generic type parameters to Class"

Q: Did all sites just graduate?

Simon André ForsbergSeems like all beta sites just lost the "Beta" status and have increased privilege requirements. I assume this is a bug, what happened here? A unicorn ate the wires again? Even though we at Code Review would love to be graduating, I bet a site like Puzzling are going to have a hard time, as the...

@Vogel612 What are you trying to do there though?

@SimonAndréForsberg :(

@skiwi a reverse to the thing of yesterday with a subcollection needing to be transformed..

@Marc-Andre Unfortunately it's not just us. I checked out PCG when I saw your chat message and then I thought that it can't be happening, PCG can't graduate at the same time we do!

1:04 PM
@Vogel612 I'm a bit confused why your return type is still Collection<T> as you seem to take two collections even as input

@SimonAndréForsberg Well it would have made my day
now I'll go work :(

well the first one is the Collection<T> with all possible items, and the second is (supposed to be) a smaller subset of T.toString() items, that need to be converted back...

A: Did all sites just graduate?

Marc GravellIndeed you are correct. A unicorn did indeed eat the wires, becoming a unicord. It wasn't an unobserved side-effect of my performance refactorings in any way, so the current build I'm frantically pushing out will probably have no effect except for coincidence. Ahem.

I am only missing 3 things from the privileges

I guess some sites just had the shortest graduation ever
You've earned the "Nice Question" badge (Question score of 10 or more) for "Did all sites just graduate?".

okay, I definitely need a review on why this looks so horrendous:
currentRole.setRights(new ArrayList<Right>(
	ModelConverter.commonObjectsOfStringifiedCollection(allRights,
	selectedRights)));

This has told me that I need to focus on rep for priveleges more.

Also got an SO badge today: You've earned the "Popular Question" badge (Asked a question with 1,000 views) for "JSTL division is automatically rounded to 1 or 0".

Q: JSTL division is automatically rounded to 1 or 0

Simon André ForsbergI found a lot of questions asking about how to round a number in JSTL. My question is the opposite. Somehow when I calculate wins / total to get the percentage of wins I always get either 0 or 1. The pattern is consistent: If wins >= losses, the result is 1, otherwise zero. So it seems like there...

@Vogel612 Because you're using Java 6.

1000 views, 1 up-vote, 1 down-vote. SO folks are strange people...
4

@skiwi no that can't be only because of Java 6..

Not that Java 8 code always looks good:
private Organization searchInvoiceOrganization(final List<Organization> organizations, final TessResult tessResult) {
    SearchStrategy searchStrategy = new SearchStrategyBuilder("(?i)^\\d{4}[a-z]{2}$")
            .mapper(string -> string.replace(" ", ""))
            .build();
    List<String> zipCodes = tessResult.findWordsInTextline(searchStrategy, "")
            .stream()
            .map(Pair::getFirst)
            .map(String::toUpperCase)
            .distinct()
            .collect(Collectors.toList());

1:19 PM
@Vogel612 Why doesn't ModelConverter.commonObjectsOfStringifiedCollection return a new array list?

I need 55 more rep, and I'll be fine

@SimonAndréForsberg because It returns a Collection<T>

(I should refactor this thing like hell)

@Vogel612 Seems reasonable :)

But I am not really In the mood to change all our Model-classes to use Collection instead of List, so...
quick and dirty "fix"

1:21 PM
@SimonAndréForsberg were you returning a boolean type?
probably an obvious question that you already looked into....

@Malachi Nope, I don't think I was.
It's such a long time ago now though :)

@Vogel612, you might not be in the mood to re-factor but to me it seems like your Rights have no order and therefore are logically a collection.

Well have a nice day all ! I will concentrate on work!

Everything seems to be back to normal now, we're now beta again
3

@SimonAndréForsberg You said that everything is back to normal now... Your statement does not hold.

1:27 PM
@skiwi What part about it does not hold?

@SimonAndréForsberg because in SQL Server you can put a 0 or 1 into a boolean column as a true or false maybe it is like that only the other way around.

@SimonAndréForsberg That everything would be normal again, with us not being graduated.

@Malachi That was not what I was doing, I was using integers.
@skiwi So you're saying that being graduated is more normal for us?

Yeah!

@SimonAndréForsberg I was thinking that maybe an operation that you performed turned one or both of the values into a boolean value...

1:30 PM
We are currently in eternal beta phase. We only have to wait an eternity to graduate.

sometimes code does weird stuff

When weren't we in beta? Did I miss something?

@Phrancis, did you ever get your Answer to post?

@Aswan while that might be correct, And in my conversion function definitely applies, I am kinda busy with getting this stuff to work in accordance to my unit-test (that are in my mind), so per TDD (in my mind) principles I am not allowed to refactor just yet.

@DaggNabbit the problem is it won't reach...

i wanted that answer to get downvotes, i don't think it's right that removing the comments is becoming a pattern

and that makes it noise, even though it may possibly induce a comment...

@DaggNabbit: I feel you ache for the reason but shog is probably right about the fact that you won't reach the downvoter

2:13 PM
i wrote the comment almost immediately after he downvoted, i was replying to an answer at the time
i don't see why it wouldn't have reached him

what do you do with question that you downvoted?

@DaggNabbit dv and instant back to question list?

do you visit them every once in a while to see if you got a "reply"?

i only downvote questions that are not clear or useless, so i don't think what i do applies to what the guy in this case does

usually when I am on SO and downvote a question I just dv, maybe upvote the comment, that is closest to my reasoning or even write a comment. But then I leave.

2:15 PM
but i have seen comments asking for clarification of downvotes that i have cast, and i answered them

@DaggNabbit not everyone revisits, what they downvote.

I think the devs/mods have a far better overview than us how the majority of people act

Hey guys

hi @Phrancis

@Phrancis you missed graduation...

2:16 PM
@Phrancis Bon matin.

we could make a "poll" here and see how the majority on CR acts (but that would still not be representative for SO/SE)

@Vogel612 what?

@Phrancis A site-wide SE bug accidentally graduated all of the Beta sites.

LOL.

@Nobody it doesn't matter how the majority acts, why can't i make noise on my own question if i think it has even the slightest chance of helping to improve it?

2:17 PM
Nice.

@DaggNabbit because it's noise?

@DaggNabbit: Well you can. And the mods can consider it noise that does not add to the question, so they remove it
both sides are legitimate

@Vogel612 so what if it's noise, if it helps improve the question?

It's not noise if it helps improve the question...

@Nobody You mean both sides have legitimate arguments. Let's not go assuming things.

2:19 PM
the character of "noise" is that it's not adding to the signal...
That's why I often delete my own comments when there were changes to stuff I commented on....

@Donald.McLean: English isn't my mothertongue. Do you mind explaining me the difference?

@Vogel612 well than what is it, schrodinger's noise? How do we know if it could have helped improve the question if it gets deleted?

@Nobody beide Seiten haben Recht vs beide Seiten haben sinnvolle Argumente

@Nobody To say that someone is "legitimate" can mean that they are the child of a married couple. It is, thankfully, a distinction that is loosing significance.

thx @Vogel612 that is what I thought
@Donald.McLean: So you were making a pun?

2:22 PM
@Nobody Yes, exactly.

@DaggNabbit sorry what are you getting at? Either it adds substantial value or it doesn't.. Questions directed at somebody who probably won't read them anyways are not adding value...

@Vogel612 the "probably" is what i'm getting at. Whether or not it's noise is apparently completely contingent on that "probably"

no it isn't... as soon as you are dependent on a "probably", you are not adding to the signal IMO.
especially if there are other comments that do add value

@DaggNabbit: Keep the target of the SE sites in mind. They want to be a resource for many people. The weighted (by probability) improvement by getting the comment might be far less than the distraction your comment/noise creates for those reading

@Vogel612 ok, so anything that's not 100% absolutely for sure a fact is noise?

2:25 PM

ThoarenI was wondering if my code is safe for sql injection. This code just checks if the username exists in my db or not. $username = $_POST['username']; $stmt = mysqli_stmt_init($con); $query = "SELECT username FROM users WHERE username = ?" ; mysqli_stmt_prepare($stmt, $query); mysqli_stmt_bind_para...

^^ oh no, another one of those @CaptainObvious D:

monking!

@CodeX Avatar change?

@Vogel612 indeed, this is me..

Monking @Mat'sMug

Monking @ckuhn203

Well you can see mee on my pic too, but I like the ghostly green eyes of my dog better ;)

@Vogel612 Is that an unedited photo?

Hey @CodeX. How are ya?

either way, It's TTQW here. prob not gonna be back before tomorrow :(
@CodeX yes.

2:40 PM
@ckuhn203 Not too bad, refactoring a few thousand lines of PHP :/

That green is the same phenomenon like the red eyes of humans.

@Vogel612 Awesome photo!

Oh my. Not too good either eh?

felines have that too, btw. and no not really...

Well hey @rolfl and @Mat'sMug, I can't believe that both of you missed graduation!

2:41 PM
@Mat'sMug I got a good portion on your code done, can you make a private room so I don't have to pollute this chatroom with all that code?

@Vogel612 crap photo! ;)

@ckuhn203 you're right about the function being quite procedural... the first run will process about 20 years of history, but subsequent ones will only bring in the new records.
Wait, WHAT?

@Nobody We are trying to do so, but many may not have the available resources from the company in order to do so.

@ckuhn203 its a bit of a pain trying to secure ALL the DB calls as some of them have LIMIT and ORDER BY

@Mat'sMug I think you will like it...
create database `Mat'sMug'sJeans`;

2:45 PM
@Mat'sMug I only tested it on one row. If you decide to go the unpivot route, make sure it gives expected results for multiple rows. I'm not 100% it will.
@CodeX Well, I'd rather be refactoring than redesigning behavior half way through a project.
Just found some serious usability issues..... le sigh.

@Mat'sMug We graduated one hour and 45 minutes ago!
(...and went back to beta 30 minutes later...)

Q: Did all sites just graduate?

Simon André ForsbergSeems like all beta sites just lost the "Beta" status and have increased privilege requirements. I assume this is a bug, what happened here? Did a unicorn ate the wires again? Even though we at Code Review would love to be graduating, I bet a site like Puzzling are going to have a hard time, as...

@ckuhn203 I'm kind of having to redesign most of my functions as well but hey ho when you love something its worth it.

@sim saw that (upvoted) ;)

Anyone got a quick link to editing question rules?

Q: For an iterative review, is it okay to edit my own question to include revised code?

JoelIs it okay to edit the question to include the improved code? I would like to do so for the following reasons: To share the improved code with others To show the answering persons that I take their feedback seriously To make sure that I understood (and implement) the feedback in the right mann...

Thanks man @ckuhn203

@Phrancis I'm on my phone right now :/

Hey Mugs!

All good just ping me whenever. I went with a bit different approach that I think will be better (though a bit slower)

@Phrancis did you get your posting privileges back yet?

2:57 PM
@Malachi not from here apparently, I was going to try from home but I got busy and forgot

that sucks. did my answer do you Justice?

@Phrancis feel free to post a competing answer to @ckuhn203's, too ;)

@Mat'sMug did I read that one?

@Malachi I think your answer is good

Q: Put it in a bucket

Mat's Mug You're running a jeans company. Your system is collecting detailed orders' data, but it's a bit archaic and it's storing the number of units ordered per size in a delimited string with 20 "fields", each taking up 4 characters. You want to normalize this data to make it easier to eventually ana...

2:59 PM
@Phrancis it still looks klutzy to me for some reason
