Aha.
So more or less anything with XML-style tags that alters behavior?

Oh crap, I forgot about the reload!

e.g. <c:forEach>, <?php ?>, <% include ... %>

@DaggNabbit I never go off on Java. I merely explain some of its more obvious shortcomings to an unbelieving audience.

12:42 AM
@SimonAndréForsberg not really, it's a special syntax... that <?foo bar?> construct
XML parsers will recognize it as part of the DOM
@JerryCoffin you say potato, I say potatto

@DaggNabbit No, I say Potatoswatter

@SimonAndréForsberg granted it's not as useful anymore now that everyone has moved back to plain-old HTML from XML-compatible HTML
@JerryCoffin I'd love to know where that user name came from

@DaggNabbit from the Philippines, as a matter of fact.

Land of the potato-swatters?

@DaggNabbit Only one I know of, but that's where he lives. Mostly a land where you nearly always eat rice instead of potatoes (at least in my experience).

Anyone still awake... can you tell me if this plan of action makes sense to you?
1. Design the DB schema and table relationships
2. Insert data, create and test procedures and functions
3. Design application behavior
4. Design user interface
5. Design export methods and formats

I believe Flambino is almost there, too.

@Phrancis A few of those activities can be done concurrently. However, I think it is more important to get the schema right, since schema changes are a pain.

CONGRATULATIONS @JerryCoffin
@200_success that is what I'm going to spend the most time on.
Any advice on the rest of the steps?
(language planned so far for UI/application is Java)
P.S.: (and not JAVA)

4:01 AM
Are you writing the application layer yourself, with no prior experience?

4:21 AM
Congrats on 10K, Flambino!

@flambino Welcome to 10k, and thanks for all of your excellent answers.

4:44 AM
Thanks all, but I'm actually still 216 short of 10K.

Hm? I see 10,024.

@Jamal Exactly.
10K = 10 * 1024 = 10240.

Ah. ;-) lol
Welp, you know what to do.

@200_success yeah basically, unless I get a volunteer with experience to help write it.
Most likely the former

5:11 AM
Without knowing any details of your application, some generic advice:
- Plan to throw away your first implementation as a draft.
- Use version control.
- If you have to demonstrate your intermediate work to a boss/client (which is a good idea), deliberately uglify the UI (e.g. green on yellow). Otherwise, they'll probably get caught up on some stupid UI detail like colour or alignment and fail to focus on the functionality.
- Unless you're artistic, get someone else to prettify the UI.

5:30 AM
Good morning. :)

@200_success Good advice, on this project I'm actually my own boss. Everything is clear except "version control"...
Hi @kleinfreund !

5:44 AM
By "version control", I mean something like subversion or git.
Subversion is easier to learn. However, serious programmers generally prefer git these days.
In any case, you want to be able to track the history of who changed what, when, and why.
You may also eventually want to be able to branch and merge, so that you have a main/release branch and a development/experimental branch.
More advice, since you're developing in Java:
- Have a build script that lets you rebuild all your source code from scratch. You never want to worry whether the code you are running reflects your most recent source code edit.

@Ja

Welcome, @Anirudh!

@Jamal The other answer was an entirely new approach to solving the same thing, didn't contain a single bit of review. Anyhow thanks for deleting that later.
Thanks..@200_success. Whats up?

No problem. Feel free to post a follow-question if you'd like further review. And welcome!

Someone help me, lol.

@Phrancis something about Project_Type feels too restrictive to me

Tell me more, or why so I can improve

well i'm thinking from kind of a sales standpoint

Project_Type is essentially like a Products table

like what if you can sell them on, say, t-shrts and album sleeves
hmm that makes sense
but what if you want to cut them a deal if they bundle stuff

like they wouldn't have gotten shirts but you give them a discount if they get album art, or something
nice logo

Good point... I thought I would just create a special project_type for ad hoc pricing and such

yeah i thought that's how it would end up going

Thanks, I wish I made it... My partner does graphics, I stick to music (and bookkeeping, evidently)

lol xD

7:32 AM
Of course, he has kids and I don't, that makes a world of difference xD

let me think about project_type, maybe think of a way to rework it
unless you are very strict about your pricing
but i am assuming not like most small biz

I wouldn't be against adding some sort of multiplier or some such to Project_Detail I think is where it would best fit, sort of a per-item multiplier or discount

it almost seems like you could do something like package "templates" that you can work from and tailor to individual clients

you can do social media marketing gimmicks too

I'm wary of the word gimmicks...

There is always going to be an order that lets you avoid having to add the constraints afterwards, unless you have a circular dependency, which is bad.

Q: Need to use floats for performance yet want double-precision calculations

DenMonoGame is an open-source version of Microsoft's XNA. It's a framework for building cross-platform games. It has a number of mathematical types such as Vector and Quaternion. I am a bit baffled by they way they are using doubles and floats. So far I have gathered the following information: ...

@200_success Excellent! Now I almost understand it!

12:09 PM
JInput is interesting... It thinks I have three keyboards connected to my PC.

12:20 PM
@skiwi what. You don't ??

Wait, having only one keyboard is not the standard?

My mouse and touchpad are little keyboards, too. :)

Wow... I tracked down this bug quite quickly, but it was a surprising one
private void processTriggerValue(final float value) {
    if (value < 0) {
        processRightTriggerValue(value);
    } else {
        processLeftTriggerValue(-value);
    }
}
It didn't update the left trigger value when it went to zero.
Turns out it returns -0.0000001, and hence it attempted to update the right trigger value
My brain sucks I bit, any clue how to approach this?
The input I get is a value in the range of [-1, 1]
If it's in [-1, 0], then it needs to translate to 0-100 on the left stick, if it's in [0, 1] it needs to translate to 0-100 on the right stick
I don't want to use an if-else though, I rather want to update both values
As if-else on float is deemed to give problems

12:37 PM
@skiwi What does the different process methods do? What result do you expect? Is the problem only that you expected the value to be zero, but it was just slightly less than zero?

@SimonAndréForsberg Yeah on the latter

perhaps an if (Math.abs(value) < 0.0001) might help?

How small should the epsilon be then though?

0.000001 ?
I have no clue about where your values come from or what they are doing so I don't know how helpful I can be.

It might a good way after all
I've got to fix the calculation somewhere
and doing it on strings might get costly already

12:39 PM
strings? where did strings come from?

they get formatted as strings

@rolfl Do you know if there's a good embedded database in Java? I want to embed a database in my application, without the need of installing third party software.
@skiwi I hope you know what you're doing.

Do you have an xbox controller?
If so, you can test it :p

lol, nope, I don't.

Ah, then it gets hard I guess :p

12:42 PM
I only have two gaming consoles: 8 bit NES, 16 bit SNES

Awesome
I also just thought of an awesome way to type
Such that you can type with your controller
The trigger value determines which letter you are going to type (how much you are pressing it in), and then you can use for example the A-button to really type the letter
For better performance, you can even alternate them!
I think it would be horribly awful :)

Why do you want to type with your controller, didn't you have three keyboards just a moment ago?

In my way, you can 'type' with one hand!

I can type with two hands!

Am I guessing right that there is no one here familiar with Gulp.js?

btw, a question:
Are small mockups reviewable here? The thing with mockups is that you do not want to spend lots of time on correct OOP practices there, yet you do want some degree of OOP-ness...
So abstracting everything away in classes is out of the league, yet refactoring into methods is wanted

Sounds like the mock-up is looking to accomplish just part of what a 'real' code-base would want.,
which makes it not-real code ....

Well, to clarify, it is a piece of code with full functionality, just not fully-OOP-professionally structured
Someone with lesser experience could easily write this code and be happy with it

2:41 PM
If you were to post, saying "please ignore the OOP structure, It is not the 'real' structure the code will have" .... then what?
If someone points out that the OOP structure is sub-par, then what?

Yeah, it's exactly what I am wondering

Well, the first one should be closed as not-real-code.

I could only 'request' the reviewer to focus on the code-quality vs the coding-time aspect

the second one will get you reviews on the parts of the code that you don't want reviewed.
The trick is to get rid of the parts of the code that you don't want reviewed.
leaving just the 'real' parts.
how you do that, in your case, is challenging.

A: Yet another C++ JSON parser

Jerry CoffinI've hesitated for quite a while, but decided there are a few points worth commenting on. The first and most obvious is that (by design) this simply doesn't do much. It can log the types of statements encountered in the JSON you give to it, but that's all. To be of much real use, you'd normally ...

@rolfl Heh, you said "hi" just as I'd left :) But thanks. Saw that @200_success had left a "congrats" when I hit 10K. Just wanted to say thanks

This one's so bad... It's even almost funny

@rolfl It's challenging in large part because you're asking for something that's challenging to do. It's challenging because how you write some parts of the code affects how you should write other parts. It can be difficult or even impossible to comment meaningfully on part of the code without knowing the overall structure. A comment about the name of a variable isn't very helpful if the real answer is: "That variable shouldn't exist in the first place."

@skiwi It made me laugh, but I'm not sure if it was just because it reminded me of the Weird Al video:
Santa lives! Thanks!

I see you killing zombies. ;-) But I'm almost out of votes.

@Jamal As they always say, it's the thought that counts. They don't seem to point out nearly as often that computers count a lot higher though... :-)

Damn you, Windows.

Y U So SAD?

Because of bad bad 260 char path length limitation. :(
Gulp.js works with node.js, which lets you install needed plugins with the node package manager. The cool thing is, the dependencies of these plugins (packages) are nested so deep, that they hit this limit.

@Jamal @JerryCoffin Who here has a problem with PHP?

Because you're asking for new comments of your code, this should not have been posted as an answer. Please post a follow-up question instead. — Simon André Forsberg 52 secs ago
Flagged it as NAA.
It should be a new question.

Let alone start answering, I'm happy to even be able to read questions.

I'll always wonder, if I'm ever to review interview questions... Do I immediatly <s>kill</s> turn off people when they have bad formatting?
There's surely a genius out there, who cannot format their code properly, but what are the odds?

@Jamal Speaking of interesting questions...?

I'm sure @rolfl will also have a story about this at IBM ;-)

And I have answered the division Java question.

Some tests I did: divide(5, 10) = 5, divide(9, 6) = 1, divide(7, 2) = 2, divide(42, 6) = 3. Only one of these seemed to be correct. — Simon André Forsberg 31 secs ago
Or that is a very interesting division operator he's using...
