so what's this JAVA vs Java meme?

I know. :-) I'll either start learning in July, August, or when classes start. I'll need a good starting resource and plenty of time, so that I can get a good start.

It goes like this: Real beginners to Java call it JAVA, and get ridiculed.

Essentially, if you see a question with JAVA, you Know it will be a very ... inexperienced ... user.

It's essentially an "implied" use of the tag for Java questions.

I don't think I've ever even noticed it before

It's quite common on SO.

I'm not sure how to improve the first question's title anyway.

What about PHP...? ;-)

Welcome to Code Review! Nice first post, "tear it apart" ... lol, that's the spirit! :) — Mat's Mug 44 mins ago

@Mat'sMug I'd assumed anybody who knew how to read would know better than to use PHP in the first place. :-)

@Mat'sMug fixes an additional typo

@JerryCoffin PHP considered harmful?

1:49 AM
PHP programmers are harmful in general. The language itself looks fine, if you like dollar signs.

PHP is like enriched uranium: put it in the right hands, you have a cure for cancer. put it in the wrong hands, you have a 3rd World War.
4
@Phrancis when you say dollar signs I think PowerShell, not PHP. Am I normal doctor?

@Mat'sMug I can't agree. Put it in the wrong hands, you get crappy code. Put it in the right hands, you get a charred heap where there used to be code.

@Mat'sMug makes MSO post about burninating [php]
It's also PHP that causes us to have to change our MathJax delimiters.

not just SQL programmers

@Mat'sMug It's those damn dollar signs!

look, MathJax has it all wrong

Q: Why can't humans believe contradictions?

JamesI'm ready some logic and one of the exercises asked me to convince myself that a contradictory statement was true. I could not convince myself of this and now I am curious about whether this illustrates some innate characteristic of noncontradiction in the human mind.

like, this sounds awfully similar to doublethink

people believe contradictions all the time

5:23 AM
Hm. It looks like my university now has an undergrad compilers class.

@Jamal Take it!

I'm already signed up for next semester: intro to OO, and parallel programming.
Some classmates also suggest that it's the hardest class that the undergrad department offers, and would require a strong background in data structures.

@Jamal Probably is--a large part of why taking it is such a good idea.

I may consider it next spring, if I cannot get into any other elective. It may be either that, or operating systems. Description here.
And at least I can say that I've reviewed data structures before. :-) Speaking of which, is my answer to the latest linked list question okay? I'm not sure if std::unique_ptr is even necessary at all. I do remember seeing it used by Loki before.

5:39 AM
morning @all

5:57 AM
@Jamal Yes, unique_ptr is a good choice here. And yes, your answer looks pretty good, though somewhat incomplete (i.e., as you're already aware, the code has a lot more problems).

@JerryCoffin I was about to review LinkedList, but Yuushi already said that he was writing up an answer. I just went ahead and let him post his.

I think he needs to learn about basic memory management before jumping in to using unique_ptr

Good point. My answer was primarily meant to demonstrate a more typical Node. He could always use a raw pointer instead.

6:15 AM
I've gone the raw pointer route (and also not using copy and swap for implementing copy assignment) - that's just my judgement call though based on the experience of the question asker

someone experience in connection enrichment to DB? (in JAVA?)

@JerryCoffin Any comments on my questions? :)

@Yuushi I'll go ahead and use a raw pointer in my answer. I have a few other tweaks to make anyway.

I don't think unique_ptr is a way to go. Really you don't want to expose Node at all. Iterators rule.

orthogonal concepts
internal implementation can use unique_ptr and an iterator interface
only problem with unique_ptr in a proper list type is dealing with non-default allocators
and the fact that lists have to use a call to .rebind in the allocator anyway to rebind it to their internal node type like node<T> instead of using the allocator for T

7:42 AM
I've went ahead and removed `std::unique_ptr` altogether. I'm not quite sure why I've mentioned it in the first place for a linked list.
Now I have to go to bed...

Bad exam day
@chillworld I'm not really convinced by Lombok either
If you want to argument against it:
It uses a 'bug'/feature in the compiler API that allows it to process these annotations and let the compiler do the hard work. I don't consider it stable and it might fail to work against newer JDK's.
Granted, with an external tool Lombok's behaviour can be augmented, but it will not be as concise in the build process and more subject to errors in my opinion
@SimonAndréForsberg Literally the same thing happened to me now as to you yesterday! I found stackoverflow.com/questions/24479960/… and based upon the posts and comments it looked very Simon-ish, and then I figured out you were the one who asked!

@MadaraUchiha sorry php also not mine mug :d

@SimonAndréForsberg @chillworld It's actually less about the actual PHP, and more about the correctness of the CSS escaping that I'm worried about
It's the first time I was ever required to escape CSS (not the first time I had to write PHP functions :D)

@MadaraUchiha
2
I don't think I've understood exactly what the code is doing. I've never had the requirement to escape CSS.

@MadaraUchiha same here, only thing of css that I know is to use *{...} at the start of your css and a little bit to style.

11:14 AM
@SimonAndréForsberg I have an input field where a user is allowed to insert a CSS color
That color will be injected into a stylesheet later, or even into a style= attribute
So #BADA55;}*{display:none;} is a real concern
So is #BADA55;" /><script>evil</script>

so actually you are afraid for injection into your css file

@chillworld Or into HTML file, yes.

what types of color do you accept? hexa only?

Which is why CSS escaping is in order.
@chillworld Any and all colors
This means that the following character get immunity: '#', ',', '.', '-', '(', ')', ' '

So you also accept "barack obama" as color?

11:17 AM
@chillworld Yup

(don't laugh that really works)

@chillworld I don't know if it works or not, but inputting barack obama into the CSS won't break it horribly.

#barack obama --> #baacaa

@MadaraUchiha There, I threw in my opinion

@rolfl I responded :)

@MadaraUchiha if it was me I should ask to client for restrictions
or usage of standard color names or #XXXXXX

@chillworld Please, you do not accept arbitrary CSS, HTML or JavaScript from the user
The user is not a programmer, why use his input to construct a freaking program?!
Period.
Nothing the user inputs should ever be directly injected into HTML or any other context without some form of processing.
You want to allow the user markup? Use markdown, bbcode, whatever.
You want ot allow him styles? Let him pick from a predefined set of some.
Sadly, this much is outside of my control. The fact that users input CSS is a given, nothing I can do to change it,.

11:27 AM
Users can always change their CSS, so you can't prevent it.

I didn't say you don't have to process it, just set some extra boundary's

Monking all!

monking @rolfl btw ;)

Monking @rolfl

@MadaraUchiha but I know how frustrating our job can be when our vision is the opposite of an other

11:29 AM
@rolfl That's not what I mean

@MadaraUchiha I think powerusers (think administrators of some sort) should be allowed to upload/inject their own style sheets though :o But it's probably not something you want to bother a regular user with

You do not accept CSS as input, store it in the database, and then spit it out on a stylesheet.
@skiwi No.
If you want to make fundamental changes to the CSS, go and edit the file.

Pretty sad application you have then. That'll lead to users reskinning the application and messing things up even more on both sides.

If you don't have access to that, tough. You're not going to get it through the web API.

So should a company be forced to install client side hacks on every computer/browser using the application?
Or would it be better to let the poweruser/administrator upload the modified stylesheet one time?

11:32 AM
@MadaraUchiha - I don't see a problem with that on the condition that the only person who sees the 'injected' CSS is the person who stored it.

@rolfl And that's exactly where the problem is

I.e. I can customize my personal experience on the site.

It's not.

@MadaraUchiha I don't see where you are aiming at, in either @rolfl's or my case it is still a certain user who changes it for either himself, or for a company, it's his responsible to not inject things into the page

@skiwi The attacker used a phishing attack to get access to the company's administration console.

My case is that the only victim of any injection is the user himself.
And, there are easier ways for self destruction

They then proceeded to inject an HTML tag in the widget which is displayed on reuters, which caused the page to redirect.
The "user" in this case are the company employees, who change the settings and styles for the widgets displayed on the various customers' pages.

A: Can I post questions about optimizing code on Stack Overflow?

OdedNo, it isn't the best place - though it is on-topic, there's a better place for such questions: You can take working code to Code Review - but do make sure to read their help center to see what exactly they expect from a good question.
