@Donald.McLean remonds me of the story about the two guys on a a plane who get chatting, and the first guy discovers that the second guy has 6 sons. He asks about having 6 sons, and the guy says having 3 daughters too makes the 9 children a lot to handle.....
The first guy says.... "I wish I had 9 kids".

LOL

Second says ... "No really, it is crazy, the schedules are a nighmare, one set of twins, and on of triplets, it's been crazy.
The first guy repeats .... "I wish I had 9".
the second says: What's your reasoning?
the first says: "Well, right now I have 13 ....."

@ckuhn203 I would sometimes consider an exception, considering much of what we do already involves refactoring. We were (or are still are) debating over its continued existence.

Is there a meta? I'm sorry. I just saw "tag removed from title" and that the tag wasn't actually on the question.

there was also "reworded - feel free to improve or rollback" ;)

Looks like there's two (one is rather old) on the topic. I kind of like this answer.

A: Refactor vs Refactoring

200_successI'd like to amend my previous proposal to abolish refactoring and refactor. Instead, I propose to make them both synonyms of code-smell. Since this Meta question was first raised, there have been three refactoring-related questions that I'm aware of: Possible improvements to Risk board game? ...

Here's the older question.

Q: PHP Router for MVC

TrickyIntI recently started developing my first serious project in PHP, a MVC completely build by myself, which is quite a challenge, when being new to OOP. phew!
I have determined that I am not working for this company. Even outside the test, there are some real problems with the way they are doing things. The project I was working in was a solution with 132 projects in it. I'm told that a dev on the team made the case for it to be structured that way, so they did this on purpose! They want all work done over RDP. I live in Hawaii and the company is East Coast, that is not going to work. Then the test seems more like I am a temp hired on the cheap. — CodeWarrior Jun 11 at 4:03

@Marc-Andre I actually am habituated to adding the public in.

@Malachi That's not a new acronym... You've been using that earlier...

@Mat'sMug :( it's ok :) I will still use it!

@Vogel612 MONKING!!

To me it looks wrong without it, but, there is no technical reason for it, and it makes no difference to the functionality of the interface

3:29 PM
Hello @Mat'sMug @skiwi @ckuhn203 @
6
Monking @SimonAndréForsberg

Welcome Back @Vogel612

@Vogel612 - hi.
Prodigal?

^ ??

@rolfl @Marc-Andre my opinion is to avoid the public. Same goes for abstract. Interface methods look so much cleaner without the public abstract

So it is a personal taste so I will stick to the project style!

3:31 PM
It is personal taste, as far as I now, but whatever you do, keep consistent

@Marc-Andre Or you can try to change the project style ;)

oh, interfaces.. must have missed that. well in C# it's simply illegal to specify an access modifier on an interface member, problem solved!
3

I was use to put public and it's an eclipse plug in that warned me that it was redundant. I've never though it was before!
@SimonAndréForsberg When it's an application that started in 2004, you can't really change the style anymore :P

@Marc-Andre Oh you can change the style... You cannot change the people however
3

^^ oh so sadly true

3:35 PM
@skiwi Indeed, but I value consistency (I don't if this is the word) over minor style preferences.

Well, I mean you can change all of the codebase (probably a huge undertaking), but if people start coding in their old style again... Then it's useless

^^unfortunately
Sometimes you just can't stop the flood.

I need to step it up, @nobody has more rep than me this week!

lol I totally misread that!

lol
2

3:43 PM
@skiwi Ehehe the application doesn't really have unit tests. SO this could be a really really bad idea, and I've encountered so much wierd bugs I would not try this! If there is a refactoring, it would be safer to start from scratch!

major lag issues on the network here....
I am working on removing the isValid method from my code

@Malachi that poor method ;)

@Vogel612 it needs a lot of work, but it was good to me for a while at least
is it bad to do this
> var newLine = Environment.NewLine;

@Malachi why would it be?

just curious, I am being lazy and don't want to type it over and over again in my code...

3:48 PM
it's no different from #define newLine = VbCrLf

well.. it is.

@Vogel612 WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO DO THAT?

why would you. in fact that is a constant, isn't it?
@Malachi not at all;)

I was joking

Environment.NewLine is platform-dependent.

3:49 PM
Meh, no you weren't ....

well laters, we are having visitors over for today ;)

And, I do that sort of thing all the time, and use a horrible short variable name.

@Mat'sMug I don't like "/n" I was trying to avoid it......

private static final String NL = "New Lingo";

is "environment.NewLine a string?
really bad lag here.... I have to keep hitting the blue retry link in chat.... ugh!

@Malachi it's a string if you enclose it in quotes ;)

@Malachi If it is not a String, what should it be?

3:53 PM
Property Value
Type: **System.String**
A string containing "\r\n" for non-Unix platforms, or a string containing "\n" for Unix platforms.

I guess that it is a character

On Windows, Newline is \r\n ... two characters
On mac, it used to be the opposite \n\r
But now mac uses the UNIX convention of just \n.

I have been using var but that won't work at class level scope.... :>

for the record, Windows actually has the sequence correct......
3
.... at least, it has a real reason that makes sense for what it was used for.

Q: Do you think that a Code Review style site for Graphic Designers will be supported by the Graphic Design Community?

jt0ddProposal: Design Review I think the graphic design community will support the proposal for the equivalent of what Code Review is to Stack Overflow. On the same basis that Code Review was founded, Design Review will be the Code Review equivalent for Graphic Design. Why is Design Review a good id...

It inspires other site proposals quite a bit

and we're not even graduated... go figure..

Take that, PCG!

Who knows, perhaps there'll be a "Design Golf" proposal with questions like: "How can I make this webpage uglier?"
5

> I don't agree with @Simon's idea (yes, that's my downvote!) to use another site for this. CR is proven, it's been around - and yet it's still in beta. Diluting the idea of a peer review into multiple sites isn't going to help anything. I wouldn't want to review a whole entire code base at once, not for free.

@SimonAndréForsberg Write the most sophisticated website in as little code as possible. Go!

4:41 PM
@SimonAndréForsberg doesn't look like that is going to take off at all

I don't expect any such other sites to take off either @Malachi. CR is special, and it will continue to stay special.

CodeReview is not about "opinions" it is about coding standards, programming logic and design, and several other white and black ideas that sometimes fall into a gray area. Graphics are always in a Gray Area because it depends on the client/viewer of the graphic/artwork. What I am saying is that there is far more Gray Area in Graphic Design(review) than there is in Code(review). — Malachi 25 secs ago
lots of bad stuff going on with the network here....ugh. I am surprised youtube hasn't cut out yet.

@Malachi I would say that Code Review is about opinions.

@SimonAndréForsberg it is, but most of what we review is a set of rules based on standards. and the part where we say "in my opinion" is very little of the review

Halfway DI isn't DI, it's something else in-between - you're completely losing the benefits of DI (testability, for one) if you're relying on static helpers that are themselves a dependency somewhere. If you need a Singleton instance, you can easily configure your favorite IoC container to give you a Singleton instance, instead of writing static code. — Mat's Mug 42 secs ago

vaibhavIt's a string problem I have been making on hacker rank. It is executing fine on all test cases except the last two. These last two test case are declaring it "Terminated due to time out". C programs are allowed 2 seconds on this site And somehow my program is taking a fraction beyond 2 seconds...

@skiwi I've found myself eager to work on a programming assignment. :-) Any other school assignment... nope.
2

@Jamal That pretty well just describes me
Sadly I still need one year minimum/maximum.

I'll be taking parallel programming and intro to OO next semester, so I hope I can maintain that eagerness. One will use Java, and I'm not sure about the other.

As of recently I want to program something meaningful though... But having trouble figured out what to program exactly, it both needs to be profitable in some way and doable
Remembers me that I still need to pick two subjects for next year (can take anything from whole university, but not really from computer science anymore), though I have no clue what to pick

@skiwi See a need, fill a need. What in your own life do you think "I wish someone would just make a tool that does x (or makes x easier)."?

5:18 PM
I'm wanting to work on some kidn of AI that generates (part of) a game, but having trouble finding a suitable environment for that
Say five years ago you had those text-based browser ones, and they were easy enough to program, but those times seem to be gone

@skiwi When I run out of motivation sometimes, I learn something new. Whether it's GWT, Java 8, Scala, Android, Python...
So my recommendation: Learn something new.
Btw, I discovered a project called "OpenCV" (CV = Computer Vision), that sounded interesting.

It's a rather nice project yeah, though haven't used it myself
I'm really wondering if there is a market for text-based browser games on android... The ones where you can do an action like every 5 or 10 minutes and see your character steadily progress.

Absolutely true: "Of course, there are exceptions to my dislike of static methods. True utility classes that do not pose any risk to bloat are excellent cases for static methods - System.Convert as an example. If your project is a one-off with no requirements for future maintenance, the overall architecture really isn't very important - static or non static, doesn't really matter - development speed does, however." - I completely agree with the entirety of this excellent post, thanks for sharing! — Mat's Mug 1 min ago

not sure why that was happeneing, but by ignoring null lists, it worked fine
and exported as expected

I was clueless how to tag it, and because my software is CSS preprocessor I choose CSS... — Tomek Wyderka 2 hours ago

SE devs should post their code here so we can review Stack Exchange! That would be so nice!

hey!

codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/54429/… -> looks off-topic (asking to change the design to make it look better), badly tagged and I'm tired so I find it pretty bad :P
But there is a pretty bird

Q: Faster method to find data using search word?

user2340818I need to search through a string array to find every occurrence of "Parameters Table", and between each "Parameters Table" and the next, get another string from a specified index (that remains constant). @Phrancis MySQL supports Views, which is close to a CTE except for they exist longer and have more of an impact on the database most likely.

Right, it's just more code to type, plus you have to drop them manually
I find it INSANE that the query actually runs with that many levels of nesting

@AlexL 1,111 rep! I'm out of vote, I want so badly to break it :P

@Phrancis Why would you drop them? I would think in that situation, you would just leave the view materialized in the database.

Good point, I guess it depends it this is ad-hoc or not

@AlexL TS (limited to 20 stars..)

7:58 PM
You're right though. A CTE would be nice for this.

@Marc-Andre That's ridiculous :D

It's crazy how much nesting, there's GOT to be a simpler way to do this
