@rolfl I'm in!

Pimping age-old question...

Q: Easier way to shell out sunflower seeds

PhrancisI like the taste of sunflower seeds, however I really dislike the process of shelling them. The bags say "Eat. Spit. Be happy." But I have found that shelling it in one's mouth is not only messy, it also tends to splinter the shell and hurt gums. I have tried shelling them out by hand, but that i...

@Phrancis Feed them the gerbil first?

Man, Winter Bash is fun.
2

IT WORKED

3:02 AM
@Phrancis Eat pumpkin seeds instead. You can eat the shells.

@Jamal IKR!

@Edward But then I have to fight the gerbil to get my seeds back.
(let alone, get a gerbil)

I have removed the second part of this question. Please dig through the revision history, pull out that part, and post it as a second question. It would be best that way. — rolfl ♦ 15 secs ago

@rolfl well now it's a fine question then...

Q: Simple addition, multiplication, divison, and subtraction program

SynapzI made a post a couple of days ago asking if anyone noticed bad habits or if you thought of any suggestions: (First Hangman game) I've made 2 math programs just to make sure I got it all down pat, the first one (the subject of this question) is a simple addition, multiplication, divison, and sub...

Needs some remedial lovin.

BTDT

@Mat'sMug Dafuq?

I have a boat on my head.

@Phrancis You could eat the gerbils

@Phrancis Been There, Done That

so then what gets a boat?

3:06 AM
(the "remedial lovin'")
@JeffClayton commenting on Abby's post

@Edward So... get sunflower seeds, get gerbils, let them shell seeds, eat gerbils, eat seeds, rinse & repeat? Sounds efficient!

@Phrancis You could streamline even further by just eating the gerbils.
3

LMFAO.

@rolfl Did that get you the waffle hat?

Huh, two hats from that fixup.
Got breaking bad too.
15 hats on CR now ... 2 ahead of Ducky ;-)

3:09 AM
@Edward still only 1 hat?

Only one head...

Not going to go there.

Oh crap, got Hairboat too

any particular one then?

Mug'sMat'sHat

@Mat'sMug how bizarre

indeed

Looks like my hair hat doesn't show up here.
Or does it....?

3:14 AM
yeah it does :)

No vote reversal? Interesting.
And it may take me some time to earn Breaking Bad, if I don't game it.

@Jamal There's the "Red Baron" hat

not entirely sure I will end up with a boat (somehow it is funny how these hats have such a pull)

Hats off to (Roy) Harper

3:20 AM
@RubberDuck now if we had a hair boat with a pirate in it...

icing on the cake
3
> you just earned the sql badge

Nice!
Now shoot for a badge ;-D

@RubberDuck congrats!

yes congratulations for sure

3:22 AM
Thanks guys! Oh, and don't worry, I'll catch ya yet @rolfl

lol

hahaa hairboat
Well overlords got game... and a fleet of boats...

I want them, but I do not know why

@Edward I am getting that too

I don't know why either @Edward. It's damn addicting though.

3:38 AM
That it is

Tell me you like my hat...

I'm the lowest rep user in the top 10 hats... :D
Also, #3 on SA lol.

HAAAAAT!

Haaat!

I feel like a kid at Christmas, seriously. Writing programs all day, and getting hats at night - really good!

3:47 AM

now that would be interesting... being able to wear 2 hats...

@Phrancis nice!

I think I'm done answering questions for the day, my carpel tunnel is playing up
Some serious hat action going on here!

Yeah. Sleep. Need to sleep. Hang the hat up for the day.

@JeffClayton oh, it is Christmas. Keep an eye on Meta.SE... a close eye...

One more -- possibly NSFW

@RubberDuck good night!

always loved that one
nite @RubberDuck
@Mat'sMug I will try to watch then

I won a prize in a meta-contest during last year's Winter Bash - a mug, among other things

that's awesome

Q: Are JavaScript questions about leaking memory on/off topic?

aarosilI have a JavaScript program (Node.js), which is working 100% fine, however recently I realized it is leaking memory, most likely from several different areas, likely due to closure pattern, and exacerbated by Promise library to handle async stuff. So it can benefit highly from some code review. ...

I just heard here in The Netherlands there's a company that reviews code as a business

where
If it's close to my home I could be looking at a new job
and a ticket out of here =D

I don't know where... also the teacher doesn't know it's name
Great, huh

... =/

Can't we make a company by ourselves?!

perhaps
but then we have to do startup stuff
I don't wanna do startup stuff
I wanna do programming and code review
whiny whiny whine whine

@skiwi I've been thinking about if such a company would have business

@SimonAndréForsberg ... People buy lint tools.

@SimonAndréForsberg It's proven that code reviews help to decrease the amount of bugs and it does not cost the company production power... Then it's all about cost concerns, you've got to ask less than they gain by using your services

11:00 AM
@skiwi but... your job will be to look at some of the most crappiest PHP you can imagine
and "broken" is on topic
daaang

@Pimgd Make sure that reviewing PHP is very expensive!

@skiwi but then you don't get as much business

@Pimgd Make the prices depend on how much work you have...

actually, I think it'd be hard to cover enough languages / libraries

Could be a funny business model, not sure if viable, at all

11:03 AM
@skiwi it's called contracting
I'm busy = I'll take your job if you pay me more than $200 an hour
I'm starving = $20/hr sounds okay

@Mehrad if we're talking .Net I'd use app.config for that too.

but covering the languages and libraries would be hard

PHP, Java and C# would get you a whole end already..

I mean, you're a professional. So you can't do a crappy job at reviewing - you gotta know best practices for each supported language

However there's tons of libraries of course

11:05 AM
also the mindset needed
to rapidly attempt to understand someone else's code, day in day out

off by one now:

A: The Sumo Judge hat is disruptive

Simon André ForsbergSpeaking as a regular (and room owner) in the most star-happy room on Stack Exchange: What's wrong with stars? They're only shown in the right-side bar, below all the (supposedly) more important pinned messages. If you're using stars as a kind of "bookmark" and want to for some reason restrict...

@Pimgd that's what we do around here anyway, why not get paid for it?

@SimonAndréForsberg I dunno about you, but I mentally filter code.
Also, there's no paywall to get code reviewed here.

@Pimgd with mentally filter code, do you mean "don't review everything"?

errr, more like only review things I like to review

yeah, precisely.

11:08 AM
I wouldn't review PHP, I think
but as a business you might have to
...
actually, I think code review is just too small of a slice
It's just a tool
improving code should be the business
so you can sell people lint tools / licenses
and do stuff like come have a talk about common design pitfalls in language X
...but that's what the internet has too
ping

pong

Okay so first there's the analysis period

pang

You go around their code, analyzing its flaws and such
then recommend general improvements
hold a code-workshop about the biggest issues
(like poor use of commit/rollback and its dangers)
or w/e the most glaring issue is
then you sell em a lint tool or a monthly recurring license on your online code review platform where one can (I dunno) review and annotate code and such
them platform has multiple lint tools integrated
... actually it's just sonar ++
and that's your job or so
you spend a week at each company
yeeeah.
I wonder whether that's a viable business.
I have the feeling that the actual viable side of the whole deal is not the whole part where you review the code
but more the part where you sell people licenses
... so... I guess you build a lint tool integration platform
... and then get people to pay for it?
that's... pretty hard to do, I think
or maybe not =D

11:35 AM
You done your monolog? here's no hat for that, you know...
3

... shame
by a fluke I managed to finish 2 days of work in 1 hour
3

I love when that happens... but don't tell anyone at work about that, they will do two things:
1. give you something else to do
2. expect the same the next time,.

mhmh
why don't the hats show in the top right

@Pimgd because the CSS needed to accomplish that would be... messy.
and that hats for the folks in the bottom row would cover the ones on top

@RubberDuck there is so much in app.Config. Such a useful creature. :) Thanks again for the help.

No problem @Mehrad! I just wish it worked for my purposes. Rolling your own kinda really sucks.

@RubberDuck, what would you like to use it for?

I have a bunch of user specific settings that need to be serialized and saved between sessions, but it's an add-in and I can't get it to work with a *.dll.
Damn. It's 8 am and I'm out of stars already. Guess I actually have to work today.

Seems like some people on MSE do like
Excellent answer, I never got why people are so pissed about stars. If you don't like like stars, well, then don't pay attention to the side bar. And if you like stars, then don't complain when others do so, too. I treat them like upvotes and don't hesitate to use them for interesting or funny messages, neither am I annoyed when others do so, too. — Christian Rau 1 hour ago

I saw that @SimonAndréForsberg. It made me happy. =)

How do I look now @RubberDuck

@Heslacher hahahhahahaha I was right.
You look awesome!
@rolfl you cheater. How did you manage to post that from your phone?
=)

1:40 PM
Possible solution: Type stuff on pastebin.org on computer
go to phone and copy from pastebin
go to app and paste

Creative @Pimgd - there are often very easy workarounds...

Not a bad idea.... Another idea, copy something I have on GitHub...

@RubberDuck tablet

Ahh that would make it a bit easier.

copy/paste was a b*** but I had to poat-edit to indent the code block

I saw. I was going to fix it for you, but you got it. =;)-

Oh, I did exactly that to my wife's iPad to ge tthe not-a-cherry

Really liking the code review exchange here, good premise and interesting

@RubberDuck For the record, I did that the hard way, but I tidied up the SEDE query from another machine first, then did all the logging in, multiple apps, copy/paste, (links from chat too), all on the android tablet

I'm sure I can manage something from the repo before Winterbash is over.

I do believe though, that we may have to create a collaboration system for people to earn 30 minutes or less

1:49 PM
Yeah... that one's gonna be tough. I think if it was going to happen, it would have been yesterday.

That would be very hard to get on Code Review otherwise.... but.... yeah
I am half-tempted to to post is as a challenge: new tag: .

Some of these really do look like a team would be required to solve before the season is over

No new tag for that. Bad mod monkey.

Q: Is line is longer than 80 characters is still applicable

PantherI have run my java code through some tool , I got this error that my code is more that 80 characters in many lines. Does this rule still make sense. I use to believe that this rule was applicable when screens were less wide and people were doing code in notepad or textpad kind of tools.e Does it ...

1:54 PM
@CaptainObvious kill it.
maybe migrate it.

Tired today

Even in smartphones nowadays the 80 column rule doesn't help - interesting that it is still around

@Pimgd I have been rewriting PHP code for several years that had issues, I really wish the people before me had better planning in their styles - updates tended to break things because code was so specific and did not offer scalability at all
It looks like the code was reactionary - meaning that they tended to write things in a hurry to fix things rather than any real structure

@rolfl I'm with ducky on this one. No new tag for that. Both quick-and-dirty and speed-review would be meta-tags that wouldn't really say much about the code or question itself. Might as well tag it instead, as we've clearly violated most standard practices we know of.

Q: Clojure Fibonacci

Sobieck00I'm a Clojure novice working through 4Clojure problems. In one problem I am supposed to create a function that takes a number and returns that number of Fibonaccis. My first thought was to create a function that creates a lazy sequence of Fibonaccis and then just takes however many it needs. Here...

@SimonAndréForsberg Well, the tag is excessive ... I knew that as I was writing it... but how about the concept of a challnge of some sort...?

@rolfl I don't like the fact that they made this hat so hard to get (at least in our case). I don't like the fact that some hats really need to be fought for in a way you don't normally do (like installing an app on your wife's iOS device....)

I have to commute, but, @all ... think about it. Is there a way to aid the hat earners in a way that is both fair, and in line with the rules?
@SimonAndréForsberg It was purely for experimental purposes... as a moderator I need to know the UX that people experience from different perspectives ;-)

@rolfl "Write the dirtiest code you can to create multiple answers on your question"? Not sure I like that challenge...
@rolfl yeah, right ;)

That's why I am asking for how to do it while still maintaining the 'decorum'. If there is not a way, I am content with that too

2:10 PM
Ever see the obfuscated code challenges out there? There are contests about code that unreadable yet does much

@rolfl I think one way to do it is to first announce the code in 2nd monitor, then let people prepare their answers, then post a question about it.

@JeffClayton we avoid those forcefully

@rolfl perhaps a SEDE query to find how many of our current questions that would actually have awarded that hat?

@SimonAndréForsberg I feel it has to be done on a site-wide basis, not just chat. Chat can be a component, but there has to be a notice/process that is equally accessible, and visible to all.

I bet you that Java FizzBuzz would have gotten that 30 minutes or less lol

2:13 PM
Yeah... I've not liked anything I've come up with either. I've just kind of accepted that I can't get that hat without downright cheating.

through a SEDE query we could find out what kind of questions would get one, and how easy it is

That should be easy enough....

I already know...
but it's the sort of stuff you don't want to do, really.

@rolfl I think I could even do it myself, but my guess is that you are already halfway finished about now

@rolfl wishing I could avoid... but I don't blame you

@nhgrif sure it does

2:17 PM
@nhgrif I can't say I am any better in a crunch (hence the reason I find css hacks... but that is more for fun than anything else)

@nhgrif =) And that's why you don't want to post something like that as a Code Review question.

Is that a answer?

unless case sensitivity is an issue, what would be the problem with it?

I am on my phone

2:20 PM

do other stack exchanges allow live queries or just that one?

2:25 PM
You can change the stack the query runs against.

@JeffClayton data.stackexchange.com has all Stack Exchange sites available

The only uses for obfuscated code I have ever seen was for protection of source code (the conversation from earlier) either in making it hard for people to copy or in the case of software protections - or cryptography methods
