@CaptainObvious Don't we have a tag for that?

@RubberDuck It's borked

What is that colour fading question? I can't even look at it

Q: Color fading function

mrYetiI found this old color fading function in my snippets folder and would like to implement it to one of my projects. It can be used to fade one color to another. A: Color fading function

YuushiThis is the reason why some people want ternary operators removed from the language. It's not quite the worst abuse I've seen, but it's pretty close. This took quite a while to disentangle. I'm going to go through it in steps: First step: make it slightly more readable. Break up everything: ret...

The original code:

oh yeah
I remember doing that a long time ago
that took a while

A: Color fading function

Malachi@Yuushi has a really good answer here, but I am going to point out some slightly different things that I would do to make this better code Whitespace between operators Newline characters return (factor < 0.0f) ? from : ((factor > 1.0f) ? to : (((((from >> 24) > (to >> 24)) ? ((from >

Aww yeah cheer-up quotes go

anyone willing to dig through that morass can have whatever glory is awaiting them :P

@Yuushi that was hard to read... I had to go through it several times to make sure I found all the ternary operators

((to << 24) >> 24)

and then several more times to make sure that I found all the normal operators.

@Malachi I must have been really, really bored the day I went through that

what's even the point of that

but I think what he's doing is cleaning off the first 24
in which case...
just cast to char, and get [3]

I would have to do some refreshing and learning to understand what is really going on there.... I don't even know C that well I am more of a C# type of guy

Wow it only took my Data Services team 12 days to commit an update on 2 fields for 6 records.

@Phrancis Have you considered visiting them in person?

@Phrancis I'm already 2 week's waiting for a software for intern communication
now they come to conclusion it have to be tested on 64 bit ...

@Pimgd oh I see them in person quite frequently, one of them I even have a beer with once in a while. But he's the only one who seems to get anything done, and he usually works on higher-level reporting, not mundane data maintenance tickets. We have subs for that. And they suck.

"Hey, I just made a ticket. I know you guys are busy, but if you could give me an estimate of when you'll be able to deal with my ticket, that'd be great. Looking at that latest PHP question, does anyone understand why the double-underscores used in the if{} statements?
if($firstname == '' )
{
    $reg_errors->add( 'registration-error', __( 'Please enter First Name.', 'woocommerce' ));
}

3:11 PM
I have the feelings it's not working code but I can't know for sure. @chillworld Indeed it would or a Stack Snippets.

The double underscore is likely related to WordPress, since the Woo Commerce plugin being used is for WordPress. WordPress uses the '__' for string translation (and some other PHP frameworks use it in other ways). us.php.net/manual/en/language.oop5.magic.php wordpress.org/support/topic/new-to-this

PHP reserves all function names starting with __ as magical. It is recommended that you do not use function names with __ in PHP unless you want some documented magic functionality.

Yeah, it seems that PHP isn't happy about third party offerings abusing this.

@Phrancis I <3 magic.

Q: Speeding up the process of obtaining data

MX DI created this script to obtain data from graphs online, from monavisaxmldata. But I were wondering if there was a way to obtain the data faster. Saturdays are pretty easy, just browse around SO/CR friday night late...
then play a game...
you go to bed at 2-3 AM, but not before clicking the +rep icon and seeing what got upvoted
and bam that's saturday too

yeah, I score the before-midnight/after-midnight span by being there for just 5 minutes over the clock-rollover

and then sunday I just play games all day and well yeah
...
The sadness when you find out you did visit SO all september

@rolfl almost a good year!

Does the clock rollover count in your timezone, or the servers?

4:08 PM
@Yann UTC

it is 00:00UTC

which is 1 AM for me

or 20:00 for me, until 2 weeks time, at which case it will be 19:00

DST ended here already

Bush, nuff said.
One of the most embarrassing moments to be a Canadian. Bush says timezones must change, and Canada says "sure".
2
Frankly, instead of making it 2 weeks later, they should have made it months later.

4:12 PM
why?

One day, someone will explain to me why daylight saving actually makes sense.... and I will understand. People keep saying things that don't make sense like 'there's more daylight'.
3
@Pimgd (like 6 months later ;-)

Well I wake up and it's brighter

for people with outdoors jobs, a greater percentage of the working day is while there is daylight out

I go home and it's still bright
I get home and it's dark

So, instead of changing the clocks, change the time you go to work.

4:14 PM
@rolfl lol, change corporate standards

@Pimgd Changing the rate of time travel would be easier
I'd know - I'm a time traveler. I go at 1 second per second

all the time ^^^
@Pimgd Why not? Corporate standards change anyway.

@monkey I agree DST doesn't make sense. I've heard farmers in this area complain about it too.

They have people employed to go and change all the clocks..... and all the fups tha happen as a result of unpatched machines, double-processing jobs that run through the night, etc.

Could be worse. could be that place where time stopped for a little while
It's really difficult to find out where/when that was, because my google-fu is only coming up with scientists who stopped light

4:21 PM
Conceptual question: if you can slow down light, and stop it, then you can also go faster than it.... right?

You can go faster than the light that you've stopped, for sure

Russia changed its time zones again this year. Also ended DST altogether.

@rolfl There's an argument that DST fixes your circadian rhythm, by keeping sunrise at roughly the same wall clock time throughout the year (see this slightly exaggertated image on Wikipedia). Then, there's a lot of questionable FUD along the lines of “DST saves engergy” (it doesn't necessarily) or “DST is good for the economy, because it makes people shop more”.

That's an interesting diagram, and explains a point, but it makes as many false assumptions as it does make false solutions....
The main assumption being that people who wake up to a 'mechanical clock' go to bed earlier in winter than summer.... to maintain their natural circadian rhythm.

4:37 PM
@rolfl Good luck accomplishing that.... =)

Actually, it's easy. if you get a piece of big cardboard.....
and put it on the road, between you and the sun, then run away from the cardboard....
you are going faster than the light that the cardboard slowed down (stopped).

But the cardboard reflected the light

so now you are going twice as fast (vector wise ;-) Cool!

It's going at -c(in terms of velocity)

T.T
I remember Terry Pratchett having written something about that in one of his books on the "real earth"

Physics is easy, I don't know what they're complaining about. Strap some buttered toast to a cat.
4

or "roundworld"

The buttered cat paradox is a common joke based on the tongue-in-cheek combination of two adages: Cats always land on their feet. Buttered toast always lands buttered side down. The paradox arises when one considers what would happen if one attached a piece of buttered toast (butter side up) to the back of a cat, then dropped the cat from a large height. The buttered cat paradox, submitted by artist John Frazee of Kingston, New York, won a 1993 OMNI magazine competition about paradoxes. == Thought experiments == Some people jokingly maintain that the experiment will produce an anti-gravity effect...

That^^^ and this vvv

In real life though, the butter wins over the cat, as the bread throws the cat off balance. Some friends of mine did a study on it
I pitied their cat

Well, I was going to say that I don't like cat's hair on my buttered toast... I pity me.

@Vogel612 Yup :D

6 american floors, 5 rest-of-the-world floors.

High-rise syndrome is the phenomenon of cats falling from higher than two stories (7–9 m (23–30 ft)). This is generally from high-rise buildings, or skyscrapers, and is also used to refer to the injuries sustained by a cat falling from high up. == Injuries sustained by cats falling == Common injuries sustained in cats after a fall include: Broken bones, most likely the jawbone as the cat's chin hits the ground; a broken jawbone and shattered teeth are the classic sign of a cat having sustained injuries in a fall. Injuries to the legs: joint injury; ruptured tendons; ligament injury; broken legs...

4:44 PM
@rolfl hehe

Can anyone tell that I'm waiting for 5pm?

I was serious .... in most of the world, the 1st floor is one-above the ground floor. In US, and Canada, there is no first floor, there's the ground and the second.

@Gemtastic DA? Rule 34?

This question is still off-topic as we do not fix broken code. Moreover, in general, it would be best to narrow down the code sample that may contain the error, rather than posting the entire program. No one is going to go searching for an error with no place to start. — Jamal ♦ 17 secs ago

The only rule 34 I know about is this one. wolframalpha.com/input/?i=rule%2034&t=mfftb01 and it doesn't look very exciting.
@Vogel612 thanks :)

I warned you!

Don't search things on rule 34 about something that you like or have a good memories of!

Good Advice @Marc-Andre
don't do it for something you have bad memories of either...
and I suggest we change the topic to something (more|less) enjoyable

Ahahahah

Q: Optimize the process program

Sitz BlogzThe program below is about finding the values below the percentage and splitting them into five different output files. This works great for small input data files. But when I am trying to run it for a big data it takes ages to compute. Any suggestions on optimizing the program so that I can get ...

Q: Building multi-source Repositories and Units of Work

Keith BarrowsI am working in a shop where we tie into multiple different vendors to share data. I am also tasked with "bringing the code base up to the 4.x framework. To start, I understand that Entity Framework is a Repository/UoW pattern and really does not gain anything by wrapping it in home-spun Reposi...

Q: Convert Roman to Int

Tony FireI made a function that converts Roman letters to integers. But I'm not happy with it, as I feel like I used too much code for a such a simple task. Any suggestion on how I can minimize it? values = (('M', 1000), ('CM', 900), ('D', 500), ('CD', 400), ('C', 1...

@Jamal Why are you aiming for 19.5k?

Oops, I meant 20k. ;-)

Does there even exist workplaces with 50% female co-workers?

@Gemtastic probably not so many that has to do with programming.

@SimonAndréForsberg Would be nice if there were though

5:57 PM
I'm sure there are some 2-person teams with 50% females out there. Larger team sizes... not so much.

Although at the advertising agency I worked at a few days about two weeks ago, there were quite many women. 14 / 33. Close to 50%

@SimonAndréForsberg that's nice

Q: Looking for a better way to do the loop and switch between videos (RPi GPIO)

jmcclaireI've been told synchronization using time.sleep() is not a good idea. Also, after the loop has been running for a while it ends up crashing. Can anyone suggest a better/cleaner way to do a video loop as the default with switching videos (OMXPlayer)? I'm pretty novice so the simpler the better as ...

Although there were only about 4 programmers working there. Of all the 33...
