@MaskedMan If there is an advantage, and its an IF, I think it would be to person who posted first and last. IF that is an advantage. The last would have the biggest as they are on top throughout the race ( on the candidates nomination page )
The typical user on this site is pretty bright and reasonable, in my opinion.
@MackM I agree with you, the typical active user is.
I don't think most of us will be unduly influenced by things as trifling as that.
@MackM I don't know the statistics regarding % of users who do due diligence versus those who don't. It would be interesting to know the statistics of those who vote strictly off the candidates nomination.
@MackM That is also why I said IF. :-)
I guess we will never find out the reasons why voters voted.
Unless they come and tell us, and even then we don't know if they really mean it.
12:57
When I voted last year, it was mainly based on how I viewed the candidate acted in the wider website, not just the nomination blurb or Q&A. I went by their everyday attitudes, not just how they promoted themselves in the election (that was a secondary consideration for me)
@MaskedMan Probably not. I do think the stack has statistics of some kind though.
@Snow In general, as an active user of this site, my views are similar. But what about those who just drop by to vote?
@Snow That's a reasonable approach to take.
People can't just drop by to vote. They need to have earned more than 150 rep points here.
Although that only works for those who are regular users of this site. Given that the regular users are probably vastly outnumbered by the drive-by voters, it probably doesn't matter much in the big picture.
@Snow Yes, but how hard is that to do?
13:01
@Snow Doesn't that include the 101 reputation bonus? I don't remember.
You can get 101 rep from the association bonus. You need to earn at least 49 by people voting for you.
Do you need at least 5 upvotes. For users just wishing to vote, this can take some work (to write an answer worthy of upvotes).
One does not simply walk into the Workplace to vote.
There are 3735 users with 200+ reputation here as I can see here: stackexchange.com/leagues/423/week/workplace I don't think we have that many "active" users here, though to be fair, I don't think that many people will turn up to vote.
@Snow Love it!
13:03
An SEDE query can probably tell the exact number of 150+ voters.
@MaskedMan You may be right, and thanks for sharing the info!
you'll probably have a few hundred votes in the election.
454 people voted in the previous election if I read this page right: opavote.com/results/6738938668515328/0
I found "Lilienthal is the winner after counting 454 ballots using Meek STV." a bit ambiguous at first. I thought it meant 454 people voted for Lilienthal.
@MaskedMan I read it the same way.
14:04
Yes, 454 people voted. It seems that Lilienthal was the first choice of 271 voters. The exact number of votes is a bit problematic, since voters have three votes (1st, 2nd and 3rd choice) and then you have to weigh it.
@AnneDaunted Yes, that's how I figured out what it actually meant.
@MisterPositive Except, if I recall correctly, they randonally order the candidates during the voting phase, they aren't put in any specific order to prevent that kind of Bias
@Snow Not true either, people can also earn reputation from getting edits approved (Up to rep 2000). It's not just upvotes that allow people to gain the required rep. You get 2 per approved edit, so would only need 25 edits plus the association bonus
14:22
@Draken I did not know that! Good to know and thanks for sharing!
Link for reference:
https://meta.stackexchange.com/questions/135360/theres-an-election-going-on-whats-happening-and-how-does-it-work?rq=1
"Nominations are not binding and nominees may withdraw themselves at any point. The nominations are ordered randomly."
In the primary section
And the election phase:
"Once again, no comments are allowed and the candidates are displayed in a random order."
@Draken Yes, whenever you go to the voting area, they are ordered differently. But you always see your choice on the right side.
@Draken Yes, that's true, but there's still a requisite amount of activity in the stack that's required in order for people to vote in an election. You can't simply drive by as a non-participant and stick your vote in.
14:37
@Snow Drive by edits are easier to achieve than good drive by answers/questions I find. I've done it myself where I see a HNQ question in another stack, see some mistakes and edit it to remove them. It's not quite as much work and participation as you might believe.
Yes, but you need those edits approved by peers. But, regardless of the technicalities, elections require a certain amount of participation from the voters.
Someone who reads and edits lots of questions / answers and (helpfully) flags posts might know more than someone with higher rep, gained by asking / answering an HNQ question.
@AnneDaunted Anything is possible :-)
15:16
@MisterPositive I remember when Monica wrote that a new election was coming up, someone wrote a comment saying they wouldn't run for election because they didn't have the mindest for it. It seems that the comment is gone, but I think it was you who wrote it (apologies, if I remember incorrectly). If so, what changed in the meantime?
@AnneDaunted I spend a ton of time here, and I simply changed my mind. I don't think I could do the job elsewhere very effectively, but in the end I think I am a solid candidate and wanted to give back to the community that help me grow.
@AnneDaunted Short answer is yes, I changed my mind. (like many of the other candidate here)
@AnneDaunted You have a stellar memory.
Thanks for the answer!
@MisterPositive Curse and blessing.
@AnneDaunted Your welcome. I think many users go through the phase of "Am I spending too much time here". I keep coming back, so why not serve if the community will have me.
15:37
@ChrisE Hello sir.
Howdy
@ChrisE Ready for the weekend?
I was ready on Monday
Me too, more bugs from our deployment late Sunday and most of them are not mine, but I am the fastest to fix in most cases with JavaScript. ( sigh )
This weekends soccer tournament in ATL is going to be wet I think @ChrisE
what kind of tournament?
15:40
soccer
no, i mean high school, college, pro...
Oh, LOL
UFA Rec ( my son is 16 )
yeah, that's gonna suck
I am hoping for just 1 dry game. Don't think my wish will be granted, but hey we live in GA just blink and the weather will change.
15:52
Sorry I'm new. Who aer you electing
Hi Tina, you can read about the election here: workplace.stackexchange.com/election?cb=1
It's an election for two new moderators of the site.
@Tina_Sea Don't be sorry, we were all new once.
16:11
@Snow In the real life elections, that would be roughly equivalent to letting me vote to choose the US President because I went to the US on a one week vacation. (Replace US with your favourite country, if you prefer.)
@AnneDaunted Well I have been in the same boat as @MisterPositive. I thought I wasn't going to contest the election and even went into retirement in restricted mode a couple of times, but that lasted all of 3 weeks. I thought if I am anyway coming out of retirement so frequently, why not be a moderator to prevent myself from retiring so often? :)
The only "questions" I have received so far are "why haven't you filed your nomination yet?" I don't know what it is supposed to mean, so I decided to just answer questions anyway even though I haven't been asked to. :)
Maybe everyone thinks I am perfect and hence no need for any questions, or everyone thinks this candidate is completely worthless, let's not waste time here. I suspect it is most likely the latter.
@MaskedMan This is where you file your nomination
16:27
Hi @MaskedMan, I'm glad to see you got you filed your nomination. You seem really anxious about the election, and I can see why- they're stressful and extremely public. I'm pretty sure most people recognize that elections results are based on a huge number of factors and won't think ill of any candidate based on their election results.
In other words, don't worry so much. :)
@MackM I am not "anxious" about it, I just don't have anything better to do at the moment. :)
The reality is that votes on question reponses hav nothing to do with who's going to win. Last year, I easily beat Lilienthal on the questions but he beat me by a significant margin with the actual vote.
dangit it's too late to delete my comment earlier. I didn't see his name when I looked and thought he hadn't actually nominated himself yet. my bad. Ugh, and my last message has massive errors. The pedant in me is stabbing me behind the eyes.
16:43
One of the perks of being a mod is that you always fix typos in your comments and chat messages :-)
@ChrisE No worries. You were trying to be helpful, need not kick yourself for it.
kicking myself is what I do.
@Carpetsmoker dang, you've discovered my real motivation for being a mod. :)

wow, just catching up. Wow.
@Tina_Sea Too which part are you referring? Tina_Sea, a reference to Tennessee?
Well it looks like you had some kind of fight. No I didn't even think of Tennessee. my aunt had a house where you could see the ocean.
17:25
@Tina_Sea Still a cool name.
17:37
It seems like you guys are not satisfied with the number of questions you receive? Time to turn up the heat, it seems. ;-)
@AnneDaunted I am. No news is good news in that regards. :-P
I like having fewer questions. I've got 1 and that's ok with me.
Sorry, I take no prisoners
@AnneDaunted I know @MaskedMan and @Snow want some. ;-)
Poor Daniel - I gave him advice on how to improve his post and since then, he received 2 downvotes.
17:45
How long do you have to be here to vote
Only rep counts
what does that mean?
you vote by rep?
You need 150 (?) reputation to be allowed to vote
@Tina_Sea Do you mean up- and downvoting, or voting in the mod election?
18:04
voting on the election
is that time or rep or what
well then I'd better hurry

3 hours later…
20:59
@Carpetsmoker I think many moderators go back and fix their old messages... not that I did. definitely not. nope, not me
