How do I go about this?
05:36
Is it to do with aromaticity?

@EshaManideep Are you a KVPY SA scholar?
@EshaManideep Wait.. Which grade are you in?
Cuz in SX, there's only 70 questions to attempt if you're only taking part one PCM + part 2 PC or PM or CM
sorry 80... my bad
Either way, you're next level amazing...
In 24th one shouldn't all of them show racemisation?
27th....In my opinion it should be D
07:43
@AbhigyanC Yeah, I am a SA scholar
@Esha Mind sharing your rank?
I'd totally understand if you don't want to
Aaand... There's so much I want to talk to a KVPY scholar about... If you have the time, do let me know :)
@J_B892 Racemisation is a special case of both chiral forms existing. It is the case when the two forms (l and d) are exactly able to cancel out each other's optical rotation exactly... However, there's a catch in SN1 reactions: There's a slight preference given to the inverted form rather than the retained form, due to the ability of the nucleophile to attack the substrate easily from behind. If the carbocation formed is extremely stable (as in option C), only then perfect racemisation occurs
@J_B892 You're most probably right, GRB has a lot of mistakes :/
07:58
@AbhigyanC Oh yeah...cyclopropyl methane carbocation is one of the most stable carbocations due to dancing resonance effect right?
08:29
@AbhigyanC 491

A: What is the reason for the exceptional stability of the cyclopropylmethyl carbocation?

AbcdCyclopropane is a highly strained molecule with bond angle of $60^\circ$. The normal tetrahedral bond angle is $\pu{109^\circ{28}'}$, so we'd expect a ring strain of $49.28^\circ$! For a cyclopropane C atom, the four hybrid orbitals are not equivalent. The two orbitals directed to the outside bo...

@Jasmine what is M
@Jasmine please upload full pic of author's solution so that we can see are the answers coming out to be really different or not?

@AvnishKabaj @AbhigyanC @Ice @Jasmine ^^^
09:53
^^is the answer (B) ?

Q: Aldol condensation in acidic medium

Abcd Attempt: I did aldol condensation in acidic medium followed by $\ce{E1cB}$ to get 1,3-diphenylbut-2-enone but the answer given is: I am unable to devise a mechanism to reach the above product from the reactant. Could someone please suggest the mechanism?

11:16
@Abcd The answer is ?
@Abcd look at the answer I gave in SE, does it sound fine ?
@Abcd where is the question from ?
11:51
@EshaManideep its from fiitjee All India Open test series on mypat
@EshaManideep C
How the hell ?
Now I know the answer I can come up with a mechanism
Please give the mechanism
@AvnishKabaj Exactly!
Still thinking
I'll have to revise orgo
Like by the next day
12:04
Cannot do it. Nice question though.
I feel like there is a purpose of focusing on NH4 "aqeous". Probably the molecule undergoes dehydration and then addition.
But how the hell does another methyl group come up from nowhere ?!
Nh4 aq is for an acidic medium
Ofcourse, for hydrolysis of the OH group on benzene ring, and the other groups.
@EshaManideep Haha, I was thinking the same. It would be like having the same reagents twice.
I strongly feel that there is something wrong with the key :P
12:19
Tada
I have a mechanism
Maybe it's feasible
Maybe it's not
I think it is
Sort pf
The phenyl group prolly stabilizes the carbanion
I couldn't come up with anything better
Wait, how did you get rid of the oxygen there ?
12:39
E1cb
You mean to say the oxygen went as o2- ?
Nah prolly reacted with water or something
You gave the test too ?
13:00
Nope
Haven't even completed one revision
Anybody of you people giving NSEC ?
13:22
@Abcd M=MOLARITY
@Abcd I understand we cannot find Cl % by just substracting C %and H % from 100 as the compound is not pure
13:51
@AvnishKabaj I am not sure if the oxygen part is correct.
Yeah, did you people give kvpy yesterday ?
@EshaManideep I'm also giving NSEC with NSEP and NSEA. Which ones are you giving?
All three :P
@EshaManideep I did, with no expectations xD
Did you do that acidity of boron compounds ?
What is the answer ?
13:53
Nitrogen oxygen fluorine chlorine?
It was basicity, right? I have forgotten already.
Yeah, that's what I put but now, I suspect it as the lone pair in nitrogen wont be parallel to p orbital of boron, while of oxygen is much close to parallel but in fluorine, it is very well in parallel
@EshaManideep I do not see how the geometry makes the difference.
It depends on the exact question asked.
Oh really, doesn't, for involvement in resonance, all of them should be in the same plane right ?
I am not sure of my argument though :P
KVPY questions are deceptive.
Extremely, that's a nice excuse for me to give the test this year again !
13:58
And we do accidents in them. How much are you expecting?
Probably more.
A 70-75.
Marks? Or correct questions?
Or rank :P
Marks.
I see no point in expecting after we give the test anyways, it either boosts my pride or depresses me.
(After the second stage of course)
@EshaManideep Hmm, exactly but it's fun asking people!
Yep
You are on Aops too ? "IceBerry"?
14:01
I solved for 87 marks. I am also expecting around the same!
Yes, you too?
Yep, I solved for 95 marks, I have already found out that I made 3(2) in part II Physics
I could solve biology questions :(
Maths was comparatively difficult.
WHAT ?!
U gave bio ?
I mean, I could solve almost all the questions which I saw of biology. I was just shuffling through sections after completion of my paper. It is well known that PCB is profitable than PCM in KVPY. I wrote maths :P
I am a PCM student.
U could finish the paper before given time ?
14:06
Who are you on AoPS?
LiFeS_lOvE
@EshaManideep Yes, because I haven't yet completed my syllabus so I left those questione.
Ohh, electrochemistry ?
@EshaManideep Ohhhh, I see. Very active on the KVPY thread!
Wave Optics ?
:P
14:07
@EshaManideep Some in chem and some on maths(because I hadn't revised the formulae :P)
Coordinate especially.
I did see your profile, you were active a month ago and just now during KVPY xD
Poor Guy, when ever an exam containing maths comes up, (JEE Oriented not Olympiad) all that comes into my head is formulae for Co-ordinate geo.
But though, the questions were solvable within 30 sec. without formulae, that disappointed me :(
I am a girl xD
@EshaManideep Oh, then I am just very dumb in co-ordinate :P
Probably you couldn't see them in panic.
14:11
I didn't solve determinants and some functions too. I always confuse with surjective and injective.
Oh, maybe. It is a relief that you have to do only 2 subjects in part 2.
Even me, I asked my neighbor at the cost of giving him the answer to that question :P
@EshaManideep Haha xD My neighbour was a biology student who probably thought I was copying her answers o_O
Just reviewed divyanka
Just revise divyanka
My neighbor slept just after 10 min the exam started, he woke up in the last 20 min, when I woke him up for that injective business. He laughed at me !
Funny neighbours you had got. The day before, I dreamed that I got 20 marks.
@AvnishKabaj What does that mean?
I should revise, I should study?
14:16
Your dot questions
It helps a lot
Bye people, gotta go !
@AvnishKabaj What. Are. You. Saying. Avnish.

14:37
Questions which you weren't able to or before or got wrong.
You are very bad at explaining
14:50
Do you mean people should revise their dot questions? Oh, it does help a lot.
But, I didn't understand what you meant by 'Just review Divyanka, just revise divyanka'

2 hours later…
16:21
you people might be interested in a question I posted in problem solving strategies in physics.
17:07
@Abcd do you have any solution for the question you posted regarding the Grignard reagent.
17:34
@EshaManideep I am!!
About that Adenine-Thiamine question in kvpy, doesn't that classify as biology?
That was probably biomolecules right?
@IceInkberry How was KVPY?
@EshaManideep I found math easier than ever before, and physics harder than ever before
Like Math was sooooo hard the last few years, and all of a sudden they decided to go easy...
@AbhigyanC biomolecules. Given in ncert chemistry.
