5:00 PM
@ErikDarling Plan to succeed as Director of Community Strategy: 1. Alienate your most committed users 2. ??? 3. Profit!
We just need to trust that Tim knows what he's doing and it will be best for the sites in the long term. After all, he must know what he's doing, and it's all based on research so mind-blowing it just wouldn't be safe to share with the meta echo chamber or anywhere else.

i was going to say "can you imagine being willing to janitor a site for free and..." but you probably can

I have a particularly powerful imagination

anyway, working for free and having your opinion ignored in favor of people who join a site to ask one question and leave is uh
well
are there words?

rewarding

@ErikDarling some of them don't even have accounts
what happened to the goal of the site being to create a useful reference for the future? instead of such a focus on making sure that OP feels good
if 90%+ of the questions on stack overflow were deleted then it would be a better reference

5:06 PM
I gave them the benefit of the doubt for ages but for the most part I just ignore them all now. They speak words. That's all they do.
@JoeObbish Such old-fashioned thinking.

time for a new site
q&c
question and CLOSE

ha!

q&d

@JoeObbish I agree. It's even true of dba.se
The tools for curation just aren't there.

@PaulWhite I like to think the percentage is lower?
maybe that's just wishful thinking

5:09 PM
It might well be, but I do see an awful lot of crap

hard to believe the tags system isn't working

In theory, the high-rep users could handle it, but there's a huge backlog, and no built-in support to make the task easier.

@PaulWhite high as in > 20k?

@JoeObbish Well 10k is enough for most things

hahahaha can you imagine if the reward for hitting 30k was getting to moderate things hahaha
no really

5:11 PM
Well the theory is that most moderation should already be carried out by non-diamond moderators

something like only 45 active 10k+ users
I'm defining active in a very unscientific way

You don't need many
Except for the backlog

I'm part of the problem in that I refuse to do anything that isn't easy

If the site were in a sensible state, maintaining it would need no more than 5-10 active 10k users
@JoeObbish And why should you? We shouldn't make it so hard, even if you were inclined to help
And there's absolutely no reason to take part in that sort of thing for anyone that doesn't want to

I'm inclined to help when it's part of my natural workflow and it's easy
I look at pretty much every question with one of my watched tags

5:13 PM
Anyway, our problems are small - nothing even - compared to SO

yes. imagine being a moderator and a bad question is asked every second

and imagine being able to do nothing about it
cast a pointless close or delete vote

ok it's maybe not that bad, but still

it really is that bad on SO
the review queues are an absolute joke

well the rate doesn't appear to be one per second

5:16 PM
~4.5 questions per minute.
Wonder how many are bad.
I did 40 reviews / day in the SO close vote review queue for a while.
It was, indeed, a joke.

I did the same, for a while
And that was after they made all those changes to make reviewing more effective

3,905 reviews in the CV queue.

You'd need a terrible system to fail to handle some proportion of 5 questions per minute

DBA gets ~35 questions per day.
(stats from stackexchange.com/sites#questions for anyone interested)
I would not have guessed that Mathematics was the next highest q / day.

I wouldn't mind so much, but there have been so many good proposals over the years to fix these problems

5:23 PM
it's really just 5 questions per minute? wow

@PaulWhite but they were on meta

yep. we get a lot of traffic, but not so many new questions
@ErikDarling I hear it's an unrepresentative echo chamber, best ignored or actively derided
just like a successful site should: lots of views, ideally helpful ones, relatively few genuinely new questions
almost like a ... library

it's because database technology has just gotten so good these days

@PaulWhite Shhh...

no need to ask questions

5:25 PM
self-tuning for the most part

self-administrating
maybe the future is for the site to be self-OPing
the OP asks his question, it's answered by a robot, and the OP moves on

@PaulWhite That feature has been enhanced with another n

but the question doesn't show up to anyone else
kind of like a shadowban

@JoshDarnell ?

5:27 PM
ah, another 'n'

What?

I got doinked for that edit

but fair play to you

Well that wasn't very subtle then.

5:28 PM
@JoeObbish that total per day doesn't include the deleted stuff which does make it a bit more

@JoeObbish yes a review queue for new questions that actually has to pass before the q appears generally

@PaulWhite missing robots

don't trust 'em
seems futuristic
unrealistic even
virtual machines

I've never noticed Pinal's Twitter header photo.

yes you have

5:31 PM
Oh hush.
Seems insecure.

I'm not even looking
Never benefited from looking at anything by Pinal before so why would it change now

6:05 PM
when I think Paul is mad at me I'll think back to what was just said

I do aim for clarity, even if I don't always achieve it

@PaulWhite yet another thing we have in common!

I thought you aimed for maximum vagueness!

6:23 PM
dammit

n00b

b00b?

n00b b00b

6:37 PM
@ErikDarling regarding the conversation about fitness earlier hauraki.co.nz/video/hauraki-tv/introducing-f-ck-all-45
including sweatpants!

I am a glutton for punishment

A: Is it possible to alias a column based on the result of a select+where?

TarynSorry to say but your table structure is difficult to work with considering what you want to do. There are various ways you can probably get the result, one way would be to use UNPIVOT and PIVOT, but it's ugly. You could start by UNPIVOTing the date in TB1 from your columns to rows: select * fr...

i like that you know one trick and know it well, hahaha

:)
Someone has to like PIVOTs

@PaulWhite none of those people have kids, which are the ultimate driver of needing to get out of the house
@Taryn how's the dog?

@ErikDarling a bit better today, thanks. She had a pulmonary embolism on Tuesday :|

yeesh

7:12 PM
Yeah, we had no idea what was going on with her. Those pugs pant a ton, so we just thought she was over-heated. We had no idea

it's weird to think about that even happening to a dog

7:37 PM
@Taryn That's awful! I'm glad she's improving today.

josh just told me in private chat that he hates dogs
don't trust him

A scandalous accusation.
Scandalous!
And baseless.

dang I don't know who to trust now

How dare he suggest skipping PIVOT
If you are going the dynamic route, then just skip the pivoting and unpivoting. — Jonathan Fite 9 mins ago

7:58 PM
You're move, Darling.

I know we're not supposed to be unfriendly, but "darling" might be taking that a bit far.
3

Haha!

I imagine Erik's never heard any jokes like that before.
It's the start of a long-weekend in Canada. I'm so tired right now, I just fell asleep at my desk.

Sounds like you need the long weekend haha.

pretty much.

8:07 PM
it doesn't help that max is 97

Yeah Max shouldn't you be eating dinner?
Or in your slippers reading the paper?

8:42 PM
Today is so weird

8:53 PM
@JoshDarnell he is move?

@ErikDarling In what way?
@Lamak 🤦‍♂️
Well played.

9:12 PM
@Taryn :'(

@SeanGallardy survives another week!

I'm not sure if that makes me lucky or unlucky, just yet
In so far as the pug, always happy a dog survives

Unlike Josh, who hates dogs

Stop trying to change the subject.
You haven't finished your story about how weird today is.

9:33 PM
i got a package that the post office tracking says hasn't even been picked up
also a sudden flurry of contract activity

That would be a better story with bus cord pulling antics.
Can you incorporate something like that?

joe was on the bus pretending to be a confused anime girl running up and down the aisles pulling a cord that doesn't work
(again)

claps

man
these writelog waits are a shit
is there less abstraction with containers than vms?

Ask Anthony Nocentino.

9:46 PM
he's ON VACATION
have some respect

He's AlwaysOn vacation.
I hear he's mastered container tuning.

10:32 PM
@ErikDarling Are the containers on vms?

10:42 PM
Is there a decent free VM tool that's not Hyper-V?

/laughs

Haha that's kind of what I expected.
I used virtual box once.
It was hard.
My new laptop has some version of Windows that doesn't include Hyper-V built in.

@JoshDarnell home?

Yeah I think so.

upgrade
@SeanGallardy everything is a vm

10:54 PM
@ErikDarling oh, I didn't realize how inexpensive that is.
Thanks.

yeah dude!

11:39 PM
guess when my ridiculous block of meetings started

9:00 am?

With the rain

it rained quite hard this morning

I saw

how did you see?

11:52 PM
I pay attention to weather in parts of the country where I know people

what a nice young man
did you buy your tickets for Charlie's Angels yet?

That doesn't sound like animemes
