Yay thanks @snailboat!

@snailboat That's a new record!
The problem is that "native" means "born in" or "as a very young child". The original poster's usage is about the attitudes of adults, who were not born during the decade in question. — Jasper 2 hours ago
That makes me think. I think the word native (or even indigenous) is usually translated into my first language as "local" (or "here" as in "here people"). I can see that "native" in English is sort of tied up with "born in".

A: I have a hard time understanding "since" in the following sentence

CoolHandLouisHere's a hierarchical parse of the sentence: The setbacks to the Minsk deal since the rebels disavowed it (it = the Minsk deal) by taking a strategic town they said was not covered by the truce have prompted (have prompted = The setbacks have pr...

@CoolHandLouis I think it would be perfect if the since-block (the block under since) were indented another level deeper.

A: Where is the exact position of the word that leads to subordinate clause?

Ben KovitzBoth sentences are correct (although in very strict, formal English, you'd say whom rather than who; more here). Actually, the difficulty isn't where to put who, it's where to put the whole subordinate clause: I drove the lady who we saw the day before yesterday to her house yesterday. ...

> I drove the lady who we saw the day before yesterday to her house yesterday.
> I drove the lady to her house yesterday, who we saw the day before yesterday.
Though I think both who and whom are acceptable, I find it hard to accept the second alternative!
I know it's unambiguous, but I'm not really sure that it's good, grammatically.
(I tossed it into my "marginal" basket already, by the way.)

Q: I absorb new information as

MotigI have a sentence in which I want to say that I love learning. The literal translation would be: I love learning. I absorb new information as a sponge absorbs water. And ... I have never heard nor read such analogy in english so while it sounds understandable, I'm afraid it looks like somethin...

Well, now. Where did the phrase come from?
12:20
@DamkerngT. @DamkerngT. What do you think of the since-block now? I'm not sure which revision you were talking about. I've posted my current parse compared to @Omnidisciplinarianist in a new (and then deleted) answer:
Let me try it in here:
The setbacks
    to the Minsk deal
    since [means AFTER, but also implies BECAUSE]
    the rebels disavowed it [it = the Minsk deal]
        by taking a strategic town
        they said
           was not covered by the truce [refers to town]
I think the to- and since- should be at the same level. Hmm...
The setbacks
    to the Minsk deal
    since [means AFTER, but also implies BECAUSE]
        the rebels disavowed it [it = the Minsk deal]
            by taking a strategic town
            they said
               was not covered by the truce [refers to town]
@CoolHandLouis How about this?
I think the to- and since- blocks should be at the same level, but not the rebels-block.
12:49
You're right.
But also to be clear, I needed to put "by" on it's on line:
The setbacks
    to the Minsk deal
    since [means AFTER, but also implies BECAUSE]
       the rebels disavowed it [it = the Minsk deal]
           by
              taking a strategic town
              they said was not covered by the truce [refers to town]
have prompted
    new calls for U.S. President Barack Obama
         to give Kiev lethal weapons to defend Ukraine.
That keeps the format fairly clean:
subject
predicate
It can never be perfect.
Hey!
@DamkerngT. "I absorb new info as a sponge absorbs water." The thing goes for me about MOs. But they're tough to learn!
@CoolHandLouis Indeed!
@MARamezani MO?
Oh, nonchemists here. :P I meant "molecular orbitals".
Oh, hmm...
@DamkerngT. Hmmm indeed. Fun to learn but these things are too strong for "superweird"!
12:58
Those strange looking but attractive things on Chemistry book covers!
hello my friends :-)
Hi Mr.smallie! :)
Well, most of it is supposed to be summarized into this:
This one is a fancier expansion:
Anonymous
@DamkerngT. Yeah, I don't really think the latter is an acceptable example of postposition
13:06
@snailboat Thanks for the confirmation!
Anonymous
Anyway, the comma is out of place.
@snailboat Hi! And, I thought the second one is ungrammatical! It's at least ungrammatical in Turkish and in Persian.
Anonymous
@MARamezani Makes sense―all the words are English!
Anonymous
Most English sentences aren't also grammatical examples of Turkish or Persian.
Anonymous
13:08
You can definitely postpose relative clauses in English under certain conditions.
@snailboat Hey I thought "making sense" was a different call to make!
Wouldn't it at least make natives look at you like this:
Anonymous
CGEL p.1066: Kim lent a book to Ed which contained all the information he needed.
2
@snailboat That's seems legit enough to me... I thought the second alternative was gonna attract weird and funny looks.
Anonymous
@MARamezani Like I said, I don't really think the second alternative discussed earlier is acceptable
Anonymous
And its comma shouldn't be there.
13:12
no language really makes sense unless you have sense
@snailboat Correction: Its comma mustn't be there.
Anonymous
@MARamezani What makes you think that what you said is a correction?
Anonymous
@infinitesimal Ah, infinite regression!
@snailboat It's more of an improvisation.
Anonymous
@DamkerngT. Hmm, I think there are a bunch of senses of native
13:21
Heh. A user started asking questions back at chemistry. He has 8 questions, and 8 votes were cast for their questions. He has one rep. In how many ways can we propose numbers about upvotes and downvotes that will match up and answer the question?
Anonymous
I don't really know what to think about the use of native in that question.
Anonymous
Sounds like they have either 6, 7, or 8 downvotes
@snailboat nods -- That's what I guess. I guess the reason I felt like it could work was just that I was stretching its sense in a non-native way.
@MARamezani I think if it's down below 1, the rep will be shown as 1.
Anonymous
@DamkerngT. I don't know that there's anything necessarily wrong with it. I mean, it sounds okay to me, but I don't mean to say that any of the arguments people are making are wrong
@DamkerngT. That's true.
Anonymous
13:24
It's a good discussion
there is no zero?
:-O
Anonymous
Stack Exchange was founded before the discovery of zero.
@infinitesimal no zero what?
13:25
Ah, rep.
@snailboat I gotta admit I lost my sense of humor in this one.
we will not discuss negative reputation without zero
If you have seen negative rep, that's the calculated rep for month, quarter etc.
The only thing negative about users is community.
It's -1.
is that like a bad reputation?
Anonymous
Community is user id negative one.
Please repeat after me: Community is user id negative one.

If you want to go past that, you have to go to chat:
Oh, word (or two) of the day: digital native, digital immigrant.
Oh, another good word!
Anonymous
13:31
I'm not a huge fan of the original digital natives, digital immigrants article though
Anonymous
I think a lot of the things people ascribe to both groups are just false
@snailboat Small fan?
Anonymous
@MARamezani It means I don't like the article very much. I dislike it.
I've never felt like an immigrant before, until now.
@snailboat Hey I know! Why do you bust it every time I wanna be funny? sobbing
13:33
@MARamezani Oh, poor thing!
@DamkerngT.
@MARamezani this guy looks like the great martial art master :-)
The expression after being beaten :-D
@Man_From_India No he's Pythagoras. :)
When others could come to proving his theorem.
Talking about Pythagoras, I've heard that his theorem was meant to be a secret.
@DamkerngT. How is ur work with mac computer going on?
13:40
@DamkerngT. I've heard that too.
@Man_From_India Not really well. :-)
I'm kidding. Well, actually, it's rather okay.
Got one suitable GPU?
OK....:)
@Man_From_India Oh, you mean Hackintosh? I haven't built it yet.
13:43
See, I think GTX 960 is the new thing, and it's around $199 in the US. However, the cheapest one I can get in my local stores is about $250.
I think its price will come down soon enough. Just give it a few more months.
@DamkerngT. Damkerng: This is Thailand kiddo!
Well in that case wait a bit... Btw what kind of processor mac suppprt?
@MARamezani Wait, a good graphics card doesn't always have to be for gaming. :-)
@Man_From_India I've checked in some threads and it looks like my Pentium G3285 will work fine.
Anonymous
@DamkerngT. Are you going to do stuff with CUDA?
@snailboat Yes. Parallel programming thingy.
13:46
That means Intel? :-O had no idea...
@Man_From_India I think all recent Macs are running on Intel. (I could be wrong, though.)
All i knew intel supposts Microsoft...and both apple n microsoft is based on different architecure
But again i am not expert on this...
@Man_From_India Haven't you heard about Apple MS wars or Apple Samsung wars?
Apple is just a bully I guess. :)
Anonymous
@DamkerngT. Yes, PPC macs have been thrown under the bus :-)
Steve now feels a rush of pain in his grave. :)
Anonymous
13:50
Apple's Intel transition was the process of changing the CPU of Macintosh computers from PowerPC processors to Intel x86 processors. The transition became public knowledge at the 2005 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), when Apple's then-CEO Steve Jobs made the announcement that the company would make a transition from the use of PowerPC microprocessors supplied by Freescale (formerly Motorola) and IBM in its Macintosh computers, to processors designed and manufactured by Intel, a chief supplier for most of Apple's competitors. The transition marked the Macintosh platform's second migration...
I still have immense respect for that steve guy.
Oh, yes. I remember that. Oh, it was that long time ago!
@snailboat Ohh i see...
@Man_From_India Well he's been the hero of many...and still is. But not mine.
Anonymous
I have a PPC Mac.
13:52
@snailboat Can it still boot?
:P
Anonymous
@DamkerngT. It sure can.
Glad to hear that!
Anonymous
I've only ever used it for two things.
Anonymous
Image editing and audio stuff.
@snailboat Ah, like your avatars, perhaps?
13:53
Btw, have you had sour yogurt?
Anonymous
It still does the audio stuff, same as always :-)
@MARamezani Is there any sweet yogurt?
Anonymous
I should get a new computer for audio stuff, but I'm afraid the transition will make me re-buy a bunch of software.
@DamkerngT. Maybe language barrier is here. Any yogurt that has been left for some while and turns to a sour taste is considered a sour yogurt here.
Ahh
Sounds bad for health, I think!
13:57
@DamkerngT. Not serious at least. Or I would've been dead by now!
@snailboat PPC software isn't available on Apple Store, I guess.
@BenKovitz apparently I was wrong. 1 mark reduced. The key is set as "I have been working here since 2000"
Anonymous
@DamkerngT. No, they don't support any PPC stuff anymore.
Even i am planning to build one hakintosh
@DamkerngT. Hmm, this raises a question: Is sweet more opposite to bitter or to sour?
Anonymous
13:59
@AmitJoki Yeah, "I'm working here since 2000" is seriously weird
Anonymous
Native speakers prefer the perfect construction by a staggering margin there
@DamkerngT. How much does mac os cost?
@Man_From_India You can save a lot of money. (Or it's supposed to.)
@snailboat ugh, it didn't seem to me at the time of exam :p
@Man_From_India Several hundred dollars, at least.

It might come out in speech now and then, but it's unlikely many people would put those words together that way in planned speech
In ur local stores?
@Man_From_India Oh, the OS. Mac OS X is practically free.
Apple is overrated. says a windows user
@DamkerngT. FYI, windows OS is 33 cents in Iran!
@MARamezani Is it legit?!
14:01
Believe me!
I got my Win 8.1 Free :-)
At school, I think. :-)
100% Legit with Product Key
@DamkerngT. never think that! Our school uses Windows XP
@DamkerngT. Is it really free? Like Ubantu?
@Man_From_India I think I can't even buy it in any local stores now.
14:02
@AmitJoki Oh not that one. MS says you can upgrade it for free, but then win store isn't available in Iran
@Man_From_India nah. Never. It's not free
Yes that is what i think
The thing is Mac OS X 10.10 (Yosemite) will come with a new Mac. People who already have an old Mac (recent ones) also can upgrade to 10.10 for free.
In your faces, then!
33 cents for win8.
@DamkerngT. I had developed a website, which became a part of BizSpark. So, I get authentic softwares for free :)
14:03
Not 8.1.
I tried to buy Lion (10.7), which is available on the US store at $19.99, but I couldn't buy it here.
Anonymous
On the other hand, Logic is much cheaper now than it was when I bought it.
@DamkerngT. Why?
@AmitJoki Oh, cool. I've heard about BizSpark before.
@DamkerngT. Ohh then i have not ever used any mac :-( so not for me :-(
14:04
@MARamezani Not sure, but that's how they run the stores here.
@snailboat Lucky you! :) :(
Anonymous
@MARamezani Yeah, if I get a new computer and buy a new copy of Logic, it's only $200, I think
@DamkerngT. yeah. But the website's taken down since it didn't run, but still, I'm a member. Long Live Microsoft :p
They just marked the price of Mac TV up about $25 last month.
Anonymous
I don't actually remember how much it was before exactly, but I remember spending around $1000
14:05
Ok. So all are Apple users here?
Long live 33 cents win OS!
Anonymous
I can't remember if that amount included any other software or not
Anonymous
@AmitJoki I'm mainly a Linux user
@snailboat like Ubuntu?
@AmitJoki Duh. I'm chatting from a win OS laptop!
Anonymous
14:06
Yes, like Ubuntu
Anonymous
But I also have Windows and OS X
Anonymous
Among other things
Oh, @Man_From_India, the cheapest iMac (21.5-inch) is at $1099!
Anonymous
I'm versatile! ;-)
@snailboat multi-booting or multiple systems?
14:06
@snailboat Yay, me too!
Anonymous
So when Apple dropped the price on Logic to $200 and switched it to digital-only sales…
Anonymous
Which honestly made me kind of sad, by the way―I read through my big ol' paper Logic manuals cover to cover
Anonymous
And I won't be able to do that with the new version!
Anonymous
@AmitJoki Yes
14:07
@snailboat ...I shut their company down.
@snailboat Yes? Do you multi boot or have 3 different systems?
Anonymous
Well, actually, it came with a manual for all the plug-ins, too, and I didn't read that one cover to cover. But I wasn't interested in most of the plug-ins :-)
Anonymous
But still. I like manuals.
Anonymous
I find the long-term trend toward manual-less software to be somewhat sad :-(
Anonymous
@AmitJoki Both
14:09
Manuals are usually easy to find when we don't want them. And when we really wan them, they're really hard to find.
Anonymous
@DamkerngT. I always know where my Logic manuals are! :-)
Anonymous
Don't ask me where any other manuals are.
Anonymous
'Cause I have no idea.
@snailboat Yeah...you go through reading and say:" OK I figured out this thing's workings..." then you go to the settings in the digital thingie and go WOW!
Well, I got to see the manual for win 8 four months after I started using it!
Anonymous
At my old place, I knew where the Photoshop manuals were. (Manual? Manuals? I'm not sure, I never once used the manual for Photoshop, I just knew where they were, is all :-)
Anonymous
14:12
But after I moved, I don't know where it (or they) went.
@snailboat Look inside the fridge.
Oh, even Adobe's also moved to digital sales.
Anonymous
@DamkerngT. Ugh, yes.
Anonymous
To a subscription model.
Anonymous
I will never pay them to rent their software.
14:13
@snailboat I hate subscriptions!
Anonymous
But! I already own Photoshop CS2, and they haven't added any features I need since then :-)
Anonymous
So it's okay.
Since photoshop is on, I think you would find this interesting 9gag.com/gag/azE168B
Yeah it was interesting... and censored.
14:16
@AmitJoki Seeing isn't believing anymore!
@DamkerngT. yup. It ain't :)
Talking about old stuff, my X31 Thinkpad still works. Yay!
But it won't accept any 512MB sticks. Not the ones I have.
Anyone watches Pawn Stars here?
I used to!
I've heard they'd been to Singapore last year.
they're fun :) Chumlee, write this thing up.
14:18
@AmitJoki Not bad...not bad...but still they've got a lot to learn about PS.
Oh, Chumlee. How many friends does he have now? :-)
Corey, Rick and Old man.
Remember what his grandpa said about his net friends? :-)
Is this Chumlee?
@MARamezani this is undefined
14:20
Heh, I failed to upload image.

When I was younger, my dad had lots of software with lots of manuals that he never looked at, and neither did anyone else as far as I can recall
Anonymous
In the end I guess it was a lot of wasted paper!
Anonymous
So maybe the trend toward not having paper manuals is a good thing :-)
@snailboat Yes! We waste a lot of silicon instead!
Oh well, I always solve chemistry problem on, new and old, manuals.
Anonymous
14:21
@DamkerngT. Hehe!
Hey, do you think this idea will sell? Adding the smell of paper to monitor bezels?

It was their April Fools prank for 2007 :-)
Hehe! Nice one!
14:25
@snailboat How did it prank, exactly?
Anonymous
It's not real.
Maybe it would've been better for them to make it so it would do something.
Talking about paper in the digital era, I wonder how many of Onyx MIDIA InkPhones has been sold.
Like saying that: "You're hacked. Pay $500 to this bank account: 1234567890 and then you'll get your thing back." Hey I'm just saying. This is an example.
FYI. Onyx MIDIA InkPhone is a phone that comes with a screen on both sides. One side is a typical LCD display, the other is an e-ink screen.
Both are touchscreens, iirc.
14:30
Double sandwich. I like that.
I still wish I had had a chance to get my hands on Pixel Qi. Too bad they've never made it again.
RIP, Pixel Qi.
Oops! How much of my idea is overlapping with Google X!?
The thing looks like an antique to me.
Pixel Qi is quite old.
And from what I gathered, you wouldn't feel the difference until you had a chance to examine it up close.
Is March's advanced quantum chemistry an ad in your tech thingie too? :)
I'm sorry! I'm afraid I'm not really into chemistry, so I missed it!
14:37
What ad popped up for you?
Lately? They're all about PC parts!
They know that I'm gonna build something. :D
They know you're a robot. Be careful! Electrical warfare's danger is now affecting you!
Still, the ads usually don't bring anything new to me. Just something that the price might be attractive.
@MARamezani Don't worry. I have double-layer protection!
Do you have missiles?
Hey, I'm not building any missiles!
14:40
Or fancy little beautiful cartoony laser beams?
Would you like to try my Storium Ray? :P
@DamkerngT. Oh, so you're not that boring after all! :)
fufufu
(I was laughing in Japanese.)
Who is this? A friend of yours?
Oh, I remember I had a toy that looked like the blue one (but way more classic) when I was 5!
The big thing about it was, it could walk!
14:46
Could it talk?
It made some sounds.
Hmm
What's the joke supposed to be?
I don't get the joke. Maybe it's an inside joke.
Hmm... Is Unfriended the new I Know What You Did Last Summer?
Are they TV shows?
They are movies.
Oh, the latest ad suggests a 4k display for me. :-)
15:09
For god's sake!
I've never clicked review and not seen a close vote pending!

Reopen? I'll say "reopen".
Reading it now, I think it could look like a non-proofreading question.
The thing is the OP asked a lot of proofreading questions during that time.
@DamkerngT. Hmm, I'd say let's open it for the learning sake, not to get the OP's proofreading done.
By now, I don't think the OP will really care about the proofreading!
It's reopened!
Ahh... I can remember it now. I think he was trying to write his resume. His work was about drilling (in a shop, not on a rig).
The series of questions was long enough that you can have a rather clear idea.

@MARamezani In military usage being on point or being the point man means acting as the front member of a scouting or attacking unit moving in an arrowhead formation. It is typically the most dangerous and demanding role, requiring acute senses (to spot enemies before they spot you) and swift reflexes (to kill them before they kill you).

@DamkerngT. Remember it's Japanese characters/second, which is not directly comparable to something like English words/minute
Anonymous
So 110 isn't especially fast!
Anonymous
Whereas for English, 110 wpm is somewhat above average
Anonymous
But I'm still proud of getting up to 110 characters/minute :-)
