::sigh::
user54412
no questions I feel like answering
user54412
nothing left to review
user54412
nothing left to vote on that I haven't voted on already
user54412
How am I supposed to slack off?
06:28
@ChrisWhite reddit :P
also, ask stuff
also, discover new sites on the network
user54412
@ManishEarth well, I just asked :P:P
user54412
also, I take a small amount of pride in not using reddit or quora or anything popular like that
user54412
and I already lurk on many SE sites
@ChrisWhite Meh, Quora's actually fine if you keep in mind its purpose and follow the right topics
But yeah, it doesn't hold a candle to SE in terms of informativeness
user54412
yeah... it's really popular with everyone I went to undergrad with
06:33
same here
Reddit: /r/funny is where I go when the Internet can't serve my slacker needs
user54412
so facebook tells me all about what they vote on already
user54412
as for the other SE sites, I've reached the point where I don't even understand how there are sites for some of these topics
user54412
tridion?
yeah, I was O_0 too
magento
expressionengine
drupal for that matter
user54412
06:34
yeah all those
user54412
not to mention bitcoin
@ChrisWhite That actually makes sense
user54412
how is there a Q&A for a fake currency?
Well, it's not fake :P
user54412
06:35
well, the internet has ascribed value to it I suppose
But bitcoin is a rather complicated system; it's not like the dollar bill (which has 20 features or so)
@ChrisWhite Exactly, and that makes it money
user54412
the fact that that works just depresses me :(
@ChrisWhite Why?
user54412
Oh I read that already
I find the concept interesting
user54412
06:36
as well as stats, scicomp, rpg, and others
I mean, they've managed to use crypto in a way such that it is less lucrative to crack the crypto
Usually encryption has a breaking point. Give me a supercomputer and a year and I'll crack it. HOWEVER, with Bitcoin, it is far more lucrative to use your supercomputer to help the system rather than against it.
user54412
people are making money - large amounts of it - not by solving real problems, but by creating new ones
Well, the "service provided" could be to "help create and maintain a currency network"
user54412
and my understanding is their problems are of the sort that the only people truly able to earn bitcoins are those with dedicated, research-level hardware
Think of those people as mint workers
@ChrisWhite Yep
user54412
06:39
I don't trust governments one bit, but I trust endeavors like bitcoin even less when it comes to equitable distribution of resources - it seems like it's meant to maintain an elite aristocracy, rather than infuse an entire economy
Thing is, Bitcoin solves many problems too. There are problems with the current infra of money transfer over long distances
@ChrisWhite How?
Miners don't get much, even with high end hardware. Unless you have an ASIC (and there are like 100 of those right now)
And the money does seem to circulate (see blockchain.info, lots of non-internal circulation)
user54412
mmm
I haven't actively participated in this -- I think I have a few ten thousandths of a BTC stashed somewhere -- but I know people who do
user54412
I do see those arguments, but US dollars aren't just fiat currency, they're fiat currency backed by the US government
user54412
if the US dissolved, all that money would become worthless overnight
06:44
Yep
user54412
so bitcoins seem a bit... unstable ... in that sense
user54412
there isn't a several-centuries-old nation state's inertia behind them
user54412
also, "open data" is apparently a concrete enough topic for a site?
user54412
it may be a great thing, but what exactly does a researcher of open data, well, do?
user54412
maybe the lesson here is that most of the planet is moving toward solving problems we invent for ourselves, because there isn't anything left to solve
user54412
06:48
i guess that's a good thing
@ChrisWhite Which is why I'm not going to switch to bitcoins any time soon
However, remember that bitcoin can't be brought down by any single entity (collapsing or not)
user54412
true
user54412
i'll admit there are the seeds of a good idea there
The liquidity may change if governments take drastic measures
@ChrisWhite Yeah, nice way of looking at it :)
user54412
but i don't think most of its creators are well-versed enough in the nuts and bolts of macroeconomics
user54412
06:51
saying "inflation is bad" is really only correct to zeroth order at best, for instance
@ChrisWhite Possibly
They got the money=liquidity bit right
But I think what they had in mind was to partially reinvent economics, or have a system in which the economics is radically different
(My net connection's hiccuping, so I may disappear)
user54412
yes, as did the soviets once upon a time...
user54412
:P
user54412
@ϚѓăʑɏβµԂԃϔ Good morning!
@ChrisWhite I was busy reading the previous conversations... Hah... Gd n8 (Hope I'm right) :D
06:55
@ChrisWhite Yeah. And bitcoin has its own form of inflation
BTW, you've started to ask homework questions..! :P
Btw the original paper doesn't list anything about inflation
> What would be the new eccentricity (and, why not, semi-major axis) after the collision?
However, what Bitcoin protects itself against is being affected by government policies. The value of the dollar is affected by every executive decision the government makes
user54412
Lol - if I ever have students of my own, their homework will be awesome
06:56
@ChrisWhite: If you've had left it as it is (without adding any of your addup - which you mentioned considerations), I'd have VTC'd it as too localized :)
user54412
@ManishEarth indeed - I guess they guard against both the good and the bad of government interference
@ChrisWhite: BTW Chris, you've worked in Palomar... Right..?
user54412
the pessimist in me thinks that's good - governments will often screw up monetary policy because they put politicians rather than economists in charge
Me?
@ChrisWhite Exactly.
@ManishEarth Not you..!
user54412
06:58
but the optimist in me hopes that a wise government can pull strings just in the right way to make improvements to the economy
user54412
@ϚѓăʑɏβµԂԃϔ yep
user54412
I've observed from there a few times
@ChrisWhite So, it had this flickering problems... Isn't it?
user54412
flickering?
(it's an old-timer ... from WWII period, I think so)
@ChrisWhite that turbulence, twinkling :D
user54412
07:00
well, Palomar actually has one of the world's best adaptive optics systems installed right now
@ChrisWhite Pssh, all the economists do is assume that people think the same and then try to do math.
user54412
they can get rid of pretty much all the atmospheric problems
user54412
the only problem is it's difficult to get permission to turn on the guide laser
Isn't that important?
07:02
@ChrisWhite Why's that so..? Is it restricted to grads too..?
user54412
you see, adaptive optics needs either a bright star near to what you're looking at, or a powerful laser to make an artificial star at the top of the atmosphere
Oh right the bright star
Twinkle twinkle...
user54412
but the Federal Aviation Administration (the people who control planes in the US) doesn't like lasers
user54412
07:03
you actually need to hire 3 or 4 people to visually look out for planes whenever the laser is on
user54412
in addition to filing plans weeks in advance
user54412
and being told where not to point so you don't hit military satellites
Why not just designate it a no-fly zone? Guide lasers are pretty important iirc
user54412
(of any nation - if Palomar accidentally blinded a Chinese spy satellite, there would be international problems)
07:04
@ChrisWhite Hmmm... Now, I get the abbrev. of FAA - I've heard in many movies like "FAA landed all flights, they hacked FAA too, etc."
user54412
it's not really a problem - just a stubborn bureaucracy
So the REAL threats to our planet are the astrophysicists/astronomers. Not the particle physicists with their black-hole-producing-LHC. :P
user54412
but all that aside, Palomar is also limited because the city of San Diego has grown over the last 60 years
user54412
the skies aren't too dark there anymore
@ϚѓăʑɏβµԂԃϔ FAA in the US, JAA in the EU, DGCA in India
07:06
@ManishEarth Ohh... Do we have one..? I should find a laser now...
user54412
but it's a very nice, hospitable telescope - there is an old-fashioned lodge for astronomers, with a permanent cook who makes whatever you want for dinner
@ChrisWhite Well, places like Keck aren't going to be light-polluted any time soon
@ChrisWhite nice!
user54412
@ManishEarth Arecibo = radio :P
user54412
it's a whole different thing
@ChrisWhite How many days or months do you stay there..?
07:07
@ChrisWhite Yeah I just realized that. Keck then
user54412
I've only been to Palomar for 1-3 day stretches, some people might do longer
@ChrisWhite Yeah... Arecibo is now with NANOGrav too....
user54412
Keck is better
user54412
Chile is even better actually
user54412
all the new telescopes are going there - they have deserts on top of extremely high plateaus, with smooth air flowing from over the Pacific
07:08
ah
user54412
basically Chile has the best observatory sites in the world, and the government recently realized this is something they should invest in
I should reduce the usage of "ah" in h-bar... coz, I'll have to say it everytime when someone opens their physical mouth :D
user54412
@ϚѓăʑɏβµԂԃϔ Ah yes, gravitational waves - India's getting a piece of that soon I believe
@ChrisWhite Reserve a ticket for me... I'll catch-up tmrw...
@ManishEarth: Anyone in India involved in this grav. waves detecting scheme..?
(I thought they're (we're) interested only in Astrology...)
@ChrisWhite: You involved in nanograv...? (the collaboration has undergrads, students, grads and prof. too... Right?)
@ChrisWhite LIGO?
07:14
@ManishEarth nanograv..!
Ah, Wikipedia lists LIGO-INDIA
user54412
@ϚѓăʑɏβµԂԃϔ nope, I'm not involved
user54412
@ManishEarth yep, LIGO wants to give one of their detectors to some other part of the world
user54412
makes for better triangulation
Huh, I thought it was going to be Japan
user54412
07:15
and I believe India stepped up for that task (after Australia opted out)
@ManishEarth Don't worry... Not for us....
hmm
@ϚѓăʑɏβµԂԃϔ ???
user54412
hmmm, well, I guess these things can change
@ϚѓăʑɏβµԂԃϔ Nobody I know personally. But I do know a lot of HEPhysicists
@ManishEarth We're busy with politics, astrology, cricket and Pak-China debates...
user54412
07:17
the square kilometer array was a European project that was choosing between Australia and South Africa, and in the end they decided to build half the array in each country o.O
@ManishEarth o.O
user54412
Maybe India and Japan can each have half an interferometer - one arm each :P
@ChrisWhite Why not just pepper the world with radio telescopes? That would improve resolution a LOT
@ChrisWhite that would be HUGE :P
user54412
well, LOFAR did that on the scale of Europe
user54412
07:18
they're just starting to acquire science now
user54412
and beyond a continent, there isn't much resolution to be gained - after all, only half the earth is facing a source at any given time
@ChrisWhite Wouldn't collaboration with just a couple of telescopes elsewhere improve resolution a lot?
For example, LOFAR+VLA
Or even LOFAR+3 telescopes from the VLA
user54412
@ManishEarth mmm, I suspect they're at different enough frequencies
user54412
though to be fair I don't fully understand the black magic of radio astronomy
@ChrisWhite Of course, but Europe only takes up a quarter of the Earth
@ChrisWhite ah makes sense
user54412
07:20
well, in their minds they take up a bit more ;)
user54412
there is an issue of having power but not being near a city
user54412
it's actually an interesting calculation to work through
user54412
these observatories need lots of electricity, mostly to operate their computers
user54412
07:22
a lot of these plans fall through because you just can't feasibly build a power plant in the middle of nowhere
user54412
solar is out, because you need power at night
user54412
wind is unreliable
@ManishEarth A lot of power shutdowns... wouldn't China give a few MWs for us - having completed the 3 Gorges project..! -_-
user54412
and everything else requires large amounts of water
07:22
I assume you need lots of people on site too, even for a single dish
user54412
yep
@ChrisWhite Are there any observatories - solar-powered..? O:)
user54412
I don't know - maybe some solar observatories are
@ChrisWhite BTW, I can't really find you in facebook you know..!
There are a lot of whites for Princeton..!
user54412
:P
07:27
@ChrisWhite Hey... Seriously :O
user54412
There aren't many Crazy's in Chennai
@ChrisWhite Truly, Nobody...
user54412
Manish on the other hand is easy to find on the internet
Same $\mu$ everywhere...
Me too - same smiley balls everywhere...
user54412
I image searched that once
user54412
07:29
turns out there are lots of people using a similar image for a profile picture
@ChrisWhite All plagiarize from me... o:)

Q: Welcome to New Users

OddthinkingThis post is written for news users of the Skeptics - Stack Exchange (or Skeptics.SE, for short) - especially those who have just asked or answered their first question, and have been surprised by the feedback. First, welcome! We hope you find Skeptics.SE enjoyable, interesting and fun… and no...

Do you believe now..?
@ChrisWhite I think I'm the only person with my name, so yeah, inevitable :)
user54412
On a side note, I am interested in getting a better image than this one
@ManishEarth Yep... Man is Hearth...
user54412
07:32
if anyone has cool suggestions...
@ChrisWhite Greek letters!
@ManishEarth Don't force everyone to be like you "Mr. mod".... Allow someone to be like me too...
(I don't see Brandon these days - after my last chat with him...)
@ChrisWhite aren't there like a million beautiful astro pics to choose from?
@ϚѓăʑɏβµԂԃϔ Nor Rhys
Probably on vacation :P
@ManishEarth Yeah... Workplace guy...
(who conned us to insert space exploration ads in our profiles)
@ChrisWhite if you want to slack off, try this question

Q: Can one black hole suck in another black hole?

bodacydoIn the recent news, scientists at NASA have found “unprecedented” black hole cluster near Andromeda’s central bulge. I wonder why doesn't all these black holes merge and such each other in until just 1 remains? Is that even possible? Can one black hole suck in another black hole?

07:35
BTW, I found Mr. Ratsauce in facebook (he was very easy... being an enthusiast in food) ;-)
Black hole collisions.
Easy peasy
user54412
huh - it seems even google doesn't really care about my existence
user54412
I have trouble finding myself
Let's see
@ManishEarth He's either slacking off with us... or slacking off finding the eccentricity :D
user54412
07:36
hint: I'm not an undergraduate captain of the lacrosse team here at princeton :P
@ChrisWhite I have your Princeton username and your middle initial
@ChrisWhite lacrosse...? leprosy..?
No homepage like entity found though
@ϚѓăʑɏβµԂԃϔ it's a game
@ManishEarth My dictionary suggests it's American-Indian..! - WTH..?
Imagine tying a small sewn-up basketball hoop to a hockey stick
user54412
07:37
@ManishEarth yeah... I need to make a homepage
user54412
as soon as I teach myself some html
And throwing/catching a tennis ball with it
user54412
@ϚѓăʑɏβµԂԃϔ Indian = Native American :P
And then playing hockey/soccer with it.
That's lacrosse
@ChrisWhite Blood y relationship
user54412
07:39
you people and your country that had the audacity to not be in this part of the world :P
@ϚѓăʑɏβµԂԃϔ When Columbus (or was it someone else?) came to America he supposedly thought it was India. Because the earth was supposed to be round. (it just wasn't nearly round enough)
user54412
It was Columbus, or so the story goes
The Native American name controversy is an ongoing dispute about the changing terminology used to refer to the indigenous peoples of the Americas and broad subsets of these peoples, such as those sharing certain cultures and languages by which more discrete groups identify themselves (e.g., "Algonquin-speaking peoples," "Pueblo-dwelling peoples"). Many English exonyms have been used to refer to the indigenous peoples of what is now known as the Americas, who were resident when European colonists arrived in the 15th and 16th centuries. Some of these names were based on French, Spanish, or ...
@ManishEarth That's why I don't trust travelers... Only Dollar-Rupee, Grey-White, 911-108, etc... differ - Like I said - bloody relationships...
huh?
grey-white?
07:42
That guy should've named it to be India so that I'll be there...
I don't like it here...
@ManishEarth Coloration... you know...
@ManishEarth Haven't asked you this ques. - How in the hell did you adapt yourself here..?
Did you like it at first..? :D
@ChrisWhite Btw, no need for HTML. You probably know LaTeX, use latex2html.org
@ϚѓăʑɏβµԂԃϔ I used to visit every year
So I had friends
The only annoying bit was adjusting to school
@ϚѓăʑɏβµԂԃϔ quora.com/India/…

@ϚѓăʑɏβµԂԃϔ Google translate tells me "Huh?" translates to இல்லையா?
user54412
is there a better translation?
user54412
(Yes, this is random, I know)
tries to figure out what language that is
@ChrisWhite Nope... Not at all..! That's really - "No..?"
Tamil or malyalam?
user54412
07:47
Tamil
What I said is, "Hah..!" - similar to "Ahah..!"
user54412
do you ever write that in Tamil?
@ChrisWhite Yep... Badly...
I write English quite faster than Tamil...
I suck in my own language :P
So do I for that matter
My English is waaay better than my Marathi(which isn't that bad in itself)
And I still can't sight-read Marathi or Hindi
07:49
@ManishEarth Marathi... Aren't you Hindi'iana..?
Nope
Maharashtrian
@ManishEarth Wow... I know Hindi somewhat..! (If someone scolds me, I can see that they're scolding (without knowing the synonyms) - that's all...)
@ManishEarth Nice :D
Rote learning - this system (I don't care)... That's one of the reason I bunk classes :/
That's quite off-topic... I'll start to rant :P
My Hindi sucks.
I knew almost no Hindi when I came here. Marathi was OK, since I use it at home and with family
And everyone in school used Hindi
Got the basics pretty quickly, but I usually make grammatical errors while speaking
@ManishEarth: You're gonna marry an English girl anyways (hmm... aren't you?) - no worries :D
As for me, English is far enough for you-like guys...
@ϚѓăʑɏβµԂԃϔ No clue :)
07:57
@ManishEarth Oh,... any enforcements in home..?
I'm happy... :D
user54412
^^^^ The temptation to star that for the transcript... ;)
leave that stuff... Like I said, for you-like guys (since this isn't your home), knowledge on language for survival is enough...
star what?
the nope?
O_0
user54412
the English girls thing
07:58
ah lol
user54412
I wonder if there are any among our regular users... actually, come to think of it, this is a pretty male-dominated site, isn't it?
This is a pretty male dominated Internet
user54412

A: Females on Christianity.SE

ManishearthIt's not just C.SE that has this problem. It's not even just the SE network that has this problem. It's the whole Internet. The anonymous nature of the Internet has made it easy for people to harass women--they see an obvious feminine username on a chat room/forum/etc and make comments directed ...

@ChrisWhite I went on to say that on a chat session (well, I expressed it badly) when Manish and Dilaton pointed me to Marie Curie)
user54412

no wonder women are overtaking men in education and productivity in the US - they're not wasting their time on the internet all day
@ChrisWhite I suppose that's here too...
Women do use the 'net, just that a lot of them use male or asexual pseudonyms
But yeah, the ratio is still skewed
I satisfy myself with h-bar and Physics.SE when women-overtaking comes to mind :)
