@Knight Relativistic mass is generally deprecated in modern treatments of special relativity. It's occasionally useful, if you're careful, and know exactly what you're doing. But otherwise, it can be misleading. It's less confusing to use relativistic momentum, which naturally incorporates the Lorentz gamma factor, and which is (of course) a vector. @dsm Hint: Did you use anywhere that $r_1,r_2,\beta$ are orthonormal yet? These are six equations (three normality orthogonality conditions and three normality conditions) and should help you to eliminate the $r_{ij}$ from your preliminary result.

@dsm Are you sure you have used all conditions? They are six: $r_1\cdot r_2 = 0, r_1 \cdot \beta = 0, r_2 \cdot \beta = 0, r_1^2 = 1, r_2^2 = 1, \beta^2 = 1$. In the end, I would expect you to end up with not only $r_{1z}$ and $r_{2z}$, but also a relation between them - the two vectors are in a plane after all, and you cannot vary the z-component of one without varying the other.

I guess it was great for the time it was written, but it's probably not so good for the lay reader these days. There are too many things in it that could give people the wrong idea. But that's almost always the case when someone tries to write a pop-science article, even if they're an expert like Gamow or Hawking. OTOH, Feynman did a great job in QED.
