@JohnRennie I love the UK keymap :)
love
Much better than US
Anonymous
10 S, Home, etc ..
Ah, it's asking which version of Windows?
And I know the PT-BR layout by heart, so I can change it with setxkbmap and type with my accents
Second from bottom is Windows 10 Pro
That's the version you had before
Anonymous
@JohnRennie Right. Should I select that ?
07:01
Yes
Anonymous
Or can I select any ?
Anonymous
Okay
You can select any that you have an install key for ...
I'm guessing your key is for Windows 10 Pro
@JohnRennie Super tempted
If only I had the money
Anonymous
Okay. Now custom install or upgrade ?
07:02
That's a killer price
Anonymous
It's showing two options
Choose the lower option, Custom install
The next screen is the partitioning screen.
Click the New link then OK to create the partition
You'll get a warning about Windows creating additional partitions. Just click OK.
Anonymous
It already started installing Windows
Anonymous
Didn't ask for partition
Anonymous
07:04
It's installing on Disk 0
Shouldn't matter. It will have used the defaults, which are fine.
Anonymous
Phew. Okay :) I guess it'll take time now. I guess that's all we had to do ?
@BernardoMeurer I'd use a Dragonfly ...
@Blue yes. The install should complete and reboot, then you'll get Cortana taking you through the first time setup.
Anonymous
@JohnRennie Alrighty. I'll keep you updated !
Do you use a Microsoft online account to log into Windows, or a conventional username and password?
Anonymous
07:07
@JohnRennie I don't have any password. And no Microsoft account either
@JohnRennie It's not a DAC?
Anonymous
The username is just admin
It's an amp!
@Blue Ah, OK. After the reboot Cortana will try really hard to get you to use an MS account. I need to talk you through what you need to click to use the same account that you had before.
Anonymous
Okay!
07:08
@BernardoMeurer Ah, OK, why do you want just a preamp? Your Marantz has an excellent preamp built in.
It's not a preamp! It's a headphone amp!
:P
Or is this just one of those objects of desire that make life such fun? :-)
I honestly just want something with tubes to play with, also the headphone output on the Marantz is a little noisy IMO
The preamp on the Marantz is great
A dragonfly has a headphone amp built in ...
My source isn't digital John :P
You gotta remember that
07:11
Ah, for your record deck
I was forgetting there are non-digital audio sources :-)
It's nice that it operates as a preamp though, because that means I can one day replace the marantz with a power amp
Like this
::salivates::
I'll have to write a lot of freelance python code, lol
I must admit I've never used the phono input on the Marantz so I have no idea how good it is.
The phono input is okay, but:
1. It doesn't support MC cartridges
2. It's a bit noisy
This is my dream phono preamp
Ah yes. I think moving magnet was the standard when the Marantz was designed. Moving coil was still the preserve of the really high end hi-fi.
It has a badass ADC in it
@JohnRennie MM is still the standard, but I'd like to try MC one day :P
07:14
A thousand dollars. Sheesh.
Yeah, I won't buy it, lol
Maybe in 5 years when people sell it used on the cheap
I used to be a certified hi-fi lunatic at 18. I must admit that these days I like music more than ever but I no longer care what it's playing on :-)
What makes that one nice is the uber-good DSD-compatible A/D on it for ripping your records
I use a Mac Mini with the built in DAC for my hi-fi and it's just fine.
I have quite a few that don't exist in digital format
So I'd like to save them
@JohnRennie If anything I'll upgrade my Phono to this one schiit.com/products/mani
Fair price, and overwhelmingly good reviews
07:20
Is it worth buying something like that unless you also buy a top end deck, arm and cartridge?
Anonymous
It's showing "Getting Ready" now
In my day that would have been a Linn Sondek with an Itok arm and Asac cartridge
(I might have misremembered the cartridge name)
Linn still makes good quality stuff, Itok and Asac I don't know about
But today Clearaudio is one of the popular end-of-ine setups
With some super expensive MC cartridge that depends on your taste
@Blue OK, it will ask for the region then the keyboard. The defaults should be fine for this. Check it's using the US keyboard.
Ortofons, Grados, The funky Japanese brands
He
07:22
@Blue the tricky bit is when you get to the How would you like to set up screen.
Anonymous
It's showing "Just a moment" now :P I'll let you know when those appear
@JohnRennie Paired of course with Wilson Audio WAMM's
@JohnRennie Ah, the ultra-high-end has moved on to different materials, like carbon fibre I believe
@BernardoMeurer jesus it looks like something from the film Alien :-)
@JohnRennie They cost like $150.000
Lol
Why are ADCs so expensive? Is it because they are specialized for each purpose or because the components are so fine?
07:25
@weezilla AD conversion is hard to do really well
@weezilla Good quality DACs and ADCs are really, really hard to design
Top end hi-fi ADCs are really carefully designed and expensive to manufacture
so mostly the former--hard to design for each particular purpose?
Anonymous
It's asking for region
Anonymous
Setting to India ?
07:27
Yes, the price includes a lot of design and development costs.
@Blue whatever you want. but changing to India might change other stuff like the language shown on screen
I'd stick with UK or US for now.
You can always change it later
I was fooling around with one for chromatography analog data a couple years ago but the one I got couldn't make it through the background noise.
@JohnRennie But I think my system as it stands is absolutely competent
seen the kickstarter for the keychain oscilloscope?
Anonymous
@JohnRennie Its asking for keyboard now. US-international ? Right ? There's another option (English - India )
I have a really nice TT, and really nice speakers
I just need:
1. A better Phono Preamp
2. A better headphone amp
Anonymous
07:30
Should I show you my keyboard layout ?
@Blue you probably want US for the keyboard. That will put the dollar key in the right place.
I already have great headphones, both over-ear and IEMs, and a great amp
@Blue yes, OK.
@weezilla Woah, cool
Thanks for sharing
07:31
we can pray it delivers something decent
Anonymous
@Blue That looks to me like a standard US keyboard. I'd choose the US keyboard.
Anonymous
Okaies
Then at the next screen choose Skip
Then you get to the tricky bit ...
Anonymous
Skipped. Connected to wifi. Now it's "now we can go look for any updates "
Anonymous
07:35
"Just moment "
Anonymous
"Set up for personal use " ?
NO! Choose set up for an organisation
I told you this bit was tricky :-)
Anonymous
Okay done !
Anonymous
It's telling me to sign in
Now on the next screen at the bottom left is a tiny link Domain join instead. Click that.
Anonymous
07:37
Done
Anonymous
Will I just put any name there ?
Anonymous
Just keeping it Admin then
Now it asks for a username. This was admin before, I would use blue or whaveer name you want
It's a bit naff using admin for your username
Anonymous
Done
Anonymous
It's asking for password
Anonymous
07:39
I don't want any :P
I would use a password. You can leave it blank but I wouldn't recommend it.
If you ever connect your laptop to other networks a password is required for your prtection
Use a password
Always
A L W A Y S
A L W A Y S mightbe a decent password
maybe add that ^ on the end :p
Anonymous
Done. Make CORTANA my PA ?
07:41
Yes - you can always disable her later if she gets too annoying :-)
And accept the defaults at the next screen
And that's basically it
@Blue DONT
DONT
CORTANA SUCKS
AND IT SPIES ON YOU
DONT
yeah cortana is useless
@JohnRennie STOP TRIGGERING ME
Anonymous
@BernardoMeurer You're too late :P
@Blue Now you get to reinstall all the software you want and do the thousand and one essential tweaks to get everything looking as you like it.
Anonymous
It's showing "This might take several minutes"
except for activating herself for no good reason; not being able to do anything useful via voice; and spying on you.
@Blue It does indeed take several minutes!
You'll need to activate Windows within three days, but I'd do that only after you're happy all your software is installed and working fine.
"As, it clearly doesn’t do anything. All the PhD’s at Microsoft cannot parse a querystring in a URL apparently." hahaha
Anonymous
The first thing I'll do is use Edge to download Chrome
Anonymous
07:44
XD
^
at least edge is fastish. less time to DL chrome
@Blue Move to Firefox!
The new Firefox is great!
didn't they revamp like everything in FF?
@weezilla Yes, it's amazing now
Left chrome when 57 was on nightly, never looked back
running 59 nightly now
57 is on stable
58 on beta
Anonymous
07:47
What's stopping me is a good tab management system. and they keep starting over on their extensions framework.
@weezilla The tab thing isn't a problem anymore, works really well :)
I store lots of tabs
And this extension format is definitive
Define "lots"
Like, I'll add 10 to 30 tabs to my archive a day
I have >120 tabs open by friday
(I clean up on Fridays)
Anonymous
07:48
I don't clean up--too stressful. I just... stow them ;)
Anonymous
So hey! I'm on :D
Anonymous
It's done
Anonymous
@JohnRennie
@weezilla Give it a try, I find it much faster and more responsive then Chrome when lots of tabs are open
07:49
@Blue see, it wasn't so bad :-)
By clean up I mean throw in a bookmark folder
@Blue You're going to have to atone for your sins so hard
I'm here trying to save your soul
@Blue Do you want to do the Linux bit now, or wait until you have everything else working?
and you're touching the devil
@JohnRennie I WILL DO THE LINUX PART
hmm maybe I can use bookmarks. hard to after using Tabs Outliner is chrome
YOU DONT TALK ABOUT THE HOLY ONE ON MY CHRISTIAN HOME
::ahem::
::sprays holy water on chat::
May God forgive all of you
Anonymous
07:51
@JohnRennie Ah, let's do that on Saturday/Sunday or Friday night. :)
Anonymous
Yeah, I want to wait a bit
gonna do WSL or dual boot?
Anonymous
@weezilla dual
Plz dual boot
Whenever. You've done all the hard work now.
07:51
@Blue Have you picked a distro?
yeah most distros are a breeze to installlllllllll
I'd like to make a suggestion that you use Antergos or Manjaro :)
They're not Debian based, so you don't have to deal with the draconism that is apt
I've never used arch
and also they are rolling release, so you don't have to deal with "This doesn't work because your packages are 5 years old -- thanks ubuntu! "
@weezilla I'm an evangelist
::sprays holy water::
lol
I'll try a vbox of it sometime
Anonymous
07:54
@JohnRennie How to change the 24-hour clock to 12-hour format? (Taskbar)
@weezilla I offer free support always for anyone who's willing to dual boot linux
Anonymous
@JohnRennie Yep
Even distros I don't like
Anonymous
Thanks :)
Any time that I am online, if you have a problem with Linux, I will stop what I am doing and I will help you solve it
07:55
at this moment in the process of recovering a disk on my laptop so I can format and dual boot again
haha
@Blue click the time, then on the popup dialog is a link for the date and time settings
Anonymous
@BernardoMeurer Don't know what that is. Do tell me :)
maybe you can answer--the allocation unit size is stored in the partition table, and only there--right?
And (soft) formatting a partition just empties the entry in the partition table--so if I recreate the partition with the exact settings, I get the FS structure back, ya?
@Blue A distro is a particular """""version""""" of linux. Linux itself is just the kernel, the base, of the operating system (some people say a kernel is the OS, I disagree). A distro is what comes bundled with your install, and most importantly what package manager you use to install stuff
Anonymous
@JohnRennie Just the Calendar pops up
Anonymous
07:57
I don't see any Settings
I recommend Arch-based distros because:
1. The package manager is a bliss to use
2. You almost never ever need to `make install` or anything nasty like that b/c of the AUR
@weezilla No, there's inodes and superblock info and stuff that you won't recover
At least on EXT4
And BTRFS
I don't know about malware file systems, like NTFS
But I assume it's the same
You can use software such as Recuva on Windows to try and get data back from formatted drives
Anonymous
@JohnRennie That option isn't shown on that pop-up Calendar. However I managed to open the Date and Time Settings from the Start menu. It's okay now. Changed to 12 hour format
Anonymous
Thanks :)
08:08
@Blue just activate Windows once you're happy it's all working fine, and that's it - you're done!
Don't forget your password!
Anonymous
@JohnRennie How to do that? "Activate"?
Click Start then the settings icon and there's a link to activate
You'll need a key. If there's a key sticker on the bottom of your laptop (possibly under the battery) that key will work.
Anonymous
Anonymous
@JohnRennie I don't have a key. I guess I told you earlier. My original OS was Windows 8, so you said I don't need a key to upgrade
Anonymous
Also the stickers have worn off
08:13
Ah, in that case it has probably automatically activated.
If you right click the desktop background and choose Personalise it will tell you if it needs to acivate.
Anonymous
Ah, seems so!
Anonymous
@JohnRennie No, it isn't telling me to Activate. It's already activated I guess :)
Great. Then you're all set.
Are you sure you don't want to do the Linux bit now? It only takes 5 minutes ...
Anonymous
@JohnRennie Okay then :P
Anonymous
So 5 mins is fine I guess
Anonymous
08:19
Actually I got to go to uni after around 30 mins
Press Windows-R and in the Run dialog type control and click OK
Anonymous
done
At the top right change the display to Small icons
Then click Programs and features
Anonymous
done
Then on the left click Turn Windows features on/off
Anonymous
08:22
Yeah, it's showing "Windows subsystem for Linux"
Anonymous
now
Scroll down to the bottom and tick Windows subsystem for Linux then click OK.
Anonymous
done
And restart when prompted
Anonymous
It's restarting now !
08:26
When it's restarted and you've logged in open a command prompt again.
Actually, when do you need to leave for college?
This shouldn't take long, but maybe it's better to finish it off when you're back from college.
Anonymous
@JohnRennie in around 20-30 mins
Should be OK then
Anonymous
It's starting 93%
When the command prompt opens type the command bash
08:28
hello
@BernardoMeurer Meh. I was never that convinced about turntable platforms ...
@JohnRennie Ah, neither am I, I just want nice looking furniture!
We used to nick a paving stone and put the turntable on that
Anonymous
@JohnRennie done
@JohnRennie I've been considering making a hollow slab out of black acrylic and filling it with sand
08:30
Sup
Anonymous
Windows subsystem has no installed distributions
Did you guys here about Kim's new weapon
Anonymous
Right ^
Anonymous
That one
08:30
He can reach any place on the planet now
Isn't he kind to allow us all to live
@Kenshin If he tries to nuke Brazil the warhead will get stolen from the bomb the second it crosses the border, I'm not concerned
@Blue Erm, that's changed in the latest update of Windows. I'll have to Google how to complete the install. Maybe go to college now and I'll check the details for when you're back.
Brazil doesn't have the structure to support an event of the magnitude of a nuclear attack
@JohnRennie I KNOW HOW
@Blue Enable developer mode
then go on the windows store
barabim-barabom
The WSL is there
Search linux or smth
08:33
@Blue OK, but this will extend the time. I'd pause it for now.
I recommend OpenSUSE from the ones available
Anonymous
@JohnRennie Okay, sure. Let's continue on Friday night in that case. Got exams tomorrow and Friday morning, so.
@Blue Concentrate on the exams now :-)
Anonymous
Ill ping you when i get back home on Friday afternoon
Anonymous
@JohnRennie hehe :)
08:35
The rest is straightforward anyway ...
@JohnRennie IT'S SO COLD! again :(
@BernardoMeurer wow, yes ...
@JohnRennie Told ya
I know about malware
They don't have SUSE tumbleweed?
But the best option would be for Blue to find out what variant of unix his college uses and choose the same. It's probably Ubuntu simply because Ubuntu is the best known distro.
@JohnRennie Meh, it really doesn't matter
the only difference is the package manager
Ubuntu really sucks
it causes all sorts of problems beginners shouldn't have to deal with
Like ABI incompatibility
The release based model is crap
Like you have to deal with TexLive being the version from when Knuth was 12
08:39
Shrug
It just sucks
@0celo7 Installed Antergos and apparently likes it
My grandfather runs Antergos and says it works well
:)
Anyway, I'm real tired
I'm heading off
@JohnRennie Don't install any more malware while I'm gone, will you?
Goodnight John!
Goodnight, sleep tight :-)
Dream only open source dreams.
sorry had an impromptu game of league with friend who was about to go to bed :p
@BernardoMeurer It's ntfs
@BernardoMeurer Thanks I'll give recuva a try before I do anything deeper... I've been playing a lot already
@user929304 I don't know if I have any particularly good posts on the issue, but search the site for "rigged Hilbert space" and you'll find several posts on it. Take heed, though, that almost no one actually uses such rigged spaces in practice - the mathematically rigorous approaches usually try to avoid having to talk about these "states" at all.
09:05
One more successful Windows 10 install behind me, and it's time for ... a coffee!
@JohnRennie ::sips delicious green tea::
To be honest I'm not sure I really taste the coffee. I tend to automatically reach for it while I'm working. Any hot liquid would probably do :-)
Coffee is at least a relatively cheap vice ...
Now I suppose I should check the review queues ... sigh
@JohnRennie I suppose good tea is more expensive than cheap coffee :/ Although still a fraction of the cost of alcohol...
Although I have to admit, this green tea smells nicer than coffee :) ::awaits massive backlash::
09:20
To each his own poison :-)
@Mithrandir24601 I just drank fermented drink with green tea flavor, finding green tea really tastes not good. I should not choose the green tea flavor.
@CaptainBohemian Nah - a proper, good green tea is delicious. The stuff you find in supermarkets is appalling
I think I probably just don't like tea, no matter what kind of tea.
also, i find tea would hinder sleeping.
``hinder sleeping" means it makes me not able to fall asleep even when I am very tired.
so I usually try my best to avoid tea unless there is no other choice of beverage.
Sid
Sid
@CaptainBohemian You only get one shot at life. Why waste it on sleep? :-)
09:36
why drink tea
it's just leaves in water
leaf juice
p. gross
who even came up with tea
look at this leaf
I'm gonna boil it
and drink it
09:55
i don't waste it on sleeping. It's just not easy for me to sleep sometimes. I don't want tea to make sleep even harder.
Opium is better for it
Nothing new
"He found that by entering the username "root", leaving the password field blank, and hitting "enter" a few times, he would be granted unrestricted access to the target machine."
That's a pretty big oversight
"Apple would not confirm or deny whether it knew about the flaw beforehand." So... They knew about it then :P
Well we don't know
Because like
Either answer is bad
If they don't know they appear stupid
If they know, they're fucking with their customers
So there's no winning scenario here
Since this is a pretty fucking dumb bug, not noticing it isn't gonna make them appear good
This isn't some leet haxx
10:07
Well, considering "a member of Apple's support forums had posted details of the flaw more than two weeks ago"
that doesn't look very good indeed
Yep: [I've omitted empty lines for brevity] "
Note: This solution might be specific to High Sierra
Try this:
Solution 1:
On startup, click on "Other"
Enter username: root and leave the password empty. Press enter. (Try twice)"
"twice"
I can see the cogs running in the developper's head
"Hm, I need some way to log in to debug easily"
"But I can't just type root without password, that wouldn't be safe"
"WAIT!"
"I have a solution!"
@Slereah yep... It almost sounds like a deliberate back door
Well I'm sure it makes the Apple people's job easier
But they could at least make it harder than that
like at least don't leave the password blank
maybe make the password "password"
10:42
I should probably sleep now
