18:00
I have to confess today's lunch came out of a box (actually several boxes)
@JohnRennie wow
jk, I like box stuff
I then put some green stuff in there to make it better
Is eating really worth all that effort?
probably not
One of the local supermarkets had an offer on party food so I bought a load of that. Some of it was very good. The cheese and fresh chilli in breadcrumbs was very nice.
From a reductionist viewpoint, you just need to receive the essential nutrients, in the simplest, quickest and easiest way possible
18:02
@lılostafa I enjoy cooking
I could probably get this teriyaki from the asian place around the corner, but I want to make it myself
Noooooooooooooooooooo DON'T STAR THAT :-)
Anonymous
No, not even that. "in vitro"
@JohnRennie It's the best way to get the golden brown crust
We're all going o get banned :-)
If we stand together to the end no one can ban us!
18:05
Sadly that is untrue :-)
Anonymous
Let's all get banned together. That'll be fun.
::ahem::
Anonymous
Lol
@ACuriousMind Do you need a lozenge?
2
Jeez, John got banned
Anonymous
18:08
Gosh
@0celo7 How do you know?
Anonymous
Someone even flagged John
@ACuriousMind Are you taking his owner privileges?
Anonymous
@lılostafa Check his chat profile
@0celo7 Room ownership is a higher privilage than modship
This room is John's property.

18:12
he is not the original owner
one of the mods is

And I only popped in to see what was going on while I was waiting to bid for something on eBay. Oh well :-)
Anonymous
:/
I knew my weakness for smutty humour would get me in trouble one day :-)
Anonymous
@JohnRennie Laptop, again?
Yes, but it's selling for more than I think it's worth so I'll let it go.
Anonymous
Pheeeeewwwww
18:41
Sunday evening is a bad time to buy on eBay as lots of people seem to be around and willing to spend money at the weekend.
If you want a powerful laptop it is an absolute steal. It's a quad core eight thread i7 and my guess is it will sell for around £200. Ridiculous price for that much power.
wtf
Anonymous
£200 is a pretty good deal
too bad non-Apple laptops don't look good. They don't ever match my shoes and handbag
Anonymous
I guess I should buy my next laptop from ebay
Anonymous
@0celo7 Malware
18:44
I'm basically your standard nerd when it comes to computers. I don't care what they look like as long as they're fast.
@Blue it depends what you want. eBay is a good way to get a very powerful laptop for little money, but it will be heavier and with a shorter battery life, and of course with no warranty.
Anonymous
@JohnRennie Heavy is fine. How long do they last (approx) without having to repair?
@Blue OSX is less malwareful than Windows.
Heavy is fine until you experience what a light laptop is like
@Blue well yours is what, six or seven years old?
Anonymous
@0celo7 Everything can be got for free on Windows
@Blue Windows itself is malware.
I have no idea what "got for free" means
If you mean piracy...just stop.
Anonymous
18:48
@JohnRennie Mine is 3.5 years old. The previous one lasted 10 years. Both are Dell laptops.
@Blue Three years old? What model is it?
@0celo7 It means that whoever got something for free was using some form of Linux :)
@Mithrandir24601 Does Linux have free legal Mathematica?
@0celo7 I doubt it somehow :/
Anonymous
@JohnRennie This E4310
Anonymous
18:50
(Latitude model)
Anonymous
@0celo7 Duh
The E4310 was released in 2011. Are you sure about that three years old bit? :-)
@Blue 10 years is... Impressive - how much do you use it?
Anonymous
@JohnRennie Well, unless my father bought it from some second hand source, I'm pretty sure. I got it in class 10th
@blue, go to this URL and click the Change Product link then type in your service code. The page will tell you when your laptop was made.
Anonymous
18:52
@JohnRennie Where do I find my service code?
The service tag is written on the bottom of the laptop.
On a Mac, it will tell you when it was made. This service is only $999.99.
Anonymous
@Mithrandir24601 Quite heavy usage. It had Windows XP
Usually there's a white label with a bar code, and the service tag is written on that label.
@Mithrandir24601 I am actually the most multicultural person here. I have a Mac and PC, and run Linux.
18:53
@Blue Nice! :) None of my family have ever managed to have a laptop last more than 5 years or a desktop more than about 7
I also built the PC myself (John helped with seating the CPU)
@0celo7 That's great, but why do you have a Mac?
For the record Apple build awesome hardware. They have forced the rest of the industry to really pick up their game.
It's a great laptop
@JohnRennie They just overcharge for it :P
Anonymous
18:55
Anonymous
Oh lol. All my labels are torn and tattered
dear god
and that is why macs are great
@Blue Ah, the white label has been torn off. You can just see the end of it towards the bottom left of the picture.
Anonymous
Ya :'D
Anonymous
18:57
I've been using it continuously for last 3.5 years and carry it everywhere with me
Anonymous
So that's expected
OK, restart the PC then as soon as the round Dell logo appears press F2 repeatedly until it says Entering setup. When you get into the BIOS setup one of the first few pages will tell you what the tag is. Press escape to exit the BIOS setup and restart back into Windows.
@Blue What the heck did you do with that laptop?
Same usage amount
But we've already established I'm careful with my stuff
Anonymous
18:59
@ACuriousMind Oh, the monitor is touching the desk. I just tilted the laptop
Anonymous
That's the bottom part you're seeing
Yeah... The equivalent [read: worse] macbook pro is about £1k more than my laptop...
Yeah, I realized that. Still, you don't seem to care particularly what you put your laptop on ;)
@Mithrandir24601 Macs have a premium for the designer cachet, but then it's not Apple's fault people are willing to pay the premium.
@JohnRennie There you go again
Why do you have to say "designer"
19:01
And to be fair if you're going to have something aspirational in your life a laptop is not a bad way to do it :-)
they just look better
that's it
nothing "designer" about it
@JohnRennie It is apple's fault for setting that premium though. It does annoy me a bit, as if they didn't have that insane extra cost, I'd actually probably rather like them
@0celo7 I'm a bit surprised to hear you say that. Apple are clearly a design led company.
@JohnRennie That's different than "designer"
You're doing that thing where you compare them to fashion accessories
I disagree. Macs are aspirational products.
They are no more functional than every other Intel based laptop.
People buy them for the cachet of owning a Mac.
(I'm generalising not pointing the finger at you)
19:04
I don't know any Mac user who thinks like that
You're generalizing based on zero data
Anonymous
This video summarizes my feelings towards Apple products.
My entire family uses Macs, and none of us give a shit what other people think about our computer buying habits
But I'm not saying that's a bad thing. Apple sell a lot of Macs so they make things people want.
@JohnRennie Or they have a specific needs that tends to require software that people tend to specifically program for macs
@Mithrandir24601 Indeed, though that isn't such a big deal these days.

19:06
@JohnRennie I bought a Mac because I wanted a Unix machine where I didn't have to sacrifice a goat to get printing to work.
In the early days if you wanted to run Illustrator or Quark a Mac was the only option.
What's Quark?
QuarkXPress is desktop publishing software for creating and editing complex page layouts in a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) environment. It runs on macOS and Windows. It was first released by Quark, Inc. in 1987 and is still owned and published by them. The most recent version, QuarkXPress 2017 (internal version number 13.0), allows publishing in English ("International and U.S.") and 36 other languages, including Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, German, Korean, Russian, French, and Spanish. QuarkXPress is used by individual designers, large publishing houses and corporates to produce...
Back in the day it was the market leading software for any serious publishing house.
WYSIWYG, ewh
Why not just use LaTeX?
Anonymous
LaTeX wasn't invented yet
19:08
LaTeX is literally the worst program ever
@BernardoMeurer Whereas Linux specialises in What You Get Is What You Deserve :-)
@Blue The Hans Zimmer music bit is pretty funny :)
@JohnRennie Exactly!
Anonymous
@Mithrandir24601 :D
@BernardoMeurer have you ever encountered a unix editor called TECO?
19:11
@JohnRennie Hmm, I have not!
WAIT
I've heard that name
Its command syntax is so arcane the usual challenge was to type in your name as a command and try and guess what it would do :-)
Was that what EMACS was called and then it changed to EMACS?
lol
TECO (; originally an acronym for [paper] Tape editor and corrector, but later Text editor and corrector, then Text editor character oriented) is a text editor originally developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the 1960s, after which it was modified by many other people. TECO was a direct ancestor of Emacs, which was originally implemented in TECO macros. == Description and impact == TECO is not only an editor but also an interpreted programming language for text manipulation. Arbitrary programs (called "macros") for searching and modifying text give it great power. Unlike...
@BernardoMeurer No, but it is fun to backronym emacs.
God that looks horrible
19:13
These days "eight-megs and constantly swapping" is both and understatement and lacks the punch it used to have, but its still my favorite.
Hehehehe
I love you guys
Well you know, children like dinosaurs :-)

@dmckee EMACS is too complicated IMHO. For the quick edits I usually do VIM serves well
@0celo7 Their periodical is great!
"Communications of the ACM"
19:16
One of the fastest 6 stars on a message I've ever seen :P
@ACuriousMind Do you happen to be better at chess than any human ever?
@Mithrandir24601 lol, not by a far shot, no
@ACuriousMind I've seen faster :P
@ACuriousMind REVIEW MY ESSAY (please)
@ACuriousMind Hmm... so you're not Deep Blue... Or so you claim...
19:18
Deep Blue is a shit computer for today's standard
@BernardoMeurer Uh, okay? Where is it?
@ACuriousMind What's your geegle email
At a minimum, $\Delta f$ has what sign?
Positive
hmm
@BernardoMeurer Initial of my first name + . + my last name (umlaut = base vowel + e) + gmail.com
@ACuriousMind wtf, how come I didn't get your gmail
is Bernardo better than me?
19:23
@ACuriousMind Sent
I only had his gmx before
yeah me too
@0celo7 Actually, you got the email address I use more, but for some reason BM asked for the google email :P
@ACuriousMind he wants to google docs it to you
Yeah, I see
aka MALWARE
19:24
MALWARE indeed
I'll have to whip my back 50 times, brb
@BernardoMeurer if you come to VA I will give you shankar
A flight to VA is like 500 bucks
I don't have that much money dude
ride a bike
Anonymous
Are trains cheaper there (than flights)?
that would be a loooooooong train ride
Anonymous
19:33
That's fine. He can sleep throughout
ok @BernardoMeurer ?
do I tell people you're coming or not
No, I'm not coming because I can't afford it
did you check trains
(I have no idea how those work in this country)
It's a $400 train ride as well
yikes
19:44
@BernardoMeurer Start a GoFundMe campaign for your trip here: gofundme.com/travel-fundraising
That would %100 work
Anonymous
That's nice. Did you try it before?
Anonymous
I think it's difficult to get funding unless you have a good(emotional) story to tell
Not myself but have seen others do it successfully
people who didn't really need it but, as you said, had a rather good story
Anonymous
For example "Bernardo and 0celo are long lost brothers separated at birth and now don't have money to meet" Something like that
For example, help us attend the $X$ scientific meeting, or the $Y$ Karate competitions...
Here, "help Bernardo visit his best friend in VA, and get a copy of Shankar from him" could work, as it's only $400
19:56
@0celo7 On most lines amtrack costs as much as flying and takes a day or more longer.
Anonymous
Here I can travel from one end of the country to another end for just $100

Everything seems to be costlier in the US
I keep on thinking I'm one year older than I am rip

20:18
@CooperCape I don't even remember my age most of the time
Anonymous
I get confused between 17,18 and 19
@Blue I'm the same - I'll sometimes ask people what year it is as well...
20:54
@dmckee 3 days for a cross-country trip
21:17
@Blue I'm just shiftin' between 16&17.
@JohnRennie Oh my goooooooood does slow cooking just turn everything into butter?
I think the fastest way for me to guess my age is sometimes remember the year I was born, then try and figure out what year it is now, based on how many years it was since I started undergrad...
Of course, I'm going to forget how many years it's been soon, so I'm going to need to think of something else
21:32
$10m bounty for any information leading to Trump's impeachment.
@Blue strange

@lılostafa Oh, don't say. Last week in a test I completed my whole CS paper neatly (and fully). After submitting it I realized that I hadn't written my name/roll no on the answer script. :'D
Anonymous
The professor was good and later on allowed me to visit his office to write my name/roll no

I'm forgetful af
@0celo7 Isn't pirating malware better than paying for malware, which further encourages and empowers its developers against the open source community?
21:52
@lılostafa the phrase "malware" is overused in this chat
22:44
@JohnRennie Disgustingly good
