@CooperCape No (although I know people who did) - I did my undergrad in Caius College (physics and computer science), then did a masters in Nottingham (mathematical physics)

@Mithrandir24601 A dual major?

Oooh Cambridge :p nice...

@Blue It's... Complicated... Technically, it's just a BA - there's no subject involved. In full glory, it's: CST (Computer Science Tripos) for part IA, NST (Natural Science Tripos) for part IB, Physics for part II

@Mithrandir24601 whew

@CooperCape Yeah :) Amazing, but simultaneously the most stressful thing I've ever done by... Erm... A long, long, long way

10:08 PM
@Mithrandir24601 There's no subject involved in a BA (= Bachelor of Arts)? And you didn't gets a BSc (=Bachelor of science)? The Bologna process is a lie :P

@ACuriousMind In Cambridge, nope :P I'll even get an MA in April 2018 (I think I've got the year right)

My keyboard has no appropriate key to react to this information.

Oxbridge is weird in giving out arts degrees...

@ACuriousMind Maybe I'm not being very clear though...

@Mithrandir24601 I'm willing to believe you're being perfectly clear.

@CooperCape It's almost infamous for being elitist ;)

@ACuriousMind I'm so used to it by now that I no longer know how to describe it :P So I just say Physics and CS

I think I'm resigned at this point to the realization that higher education is so different even across European countries that any sort of actual comparison is doomed to fail

@Blue I went to the open day at St. Andrews and found it far more elitist to be honest
@ACuriousMind In my limited experience, I agree

@Blue I went to Oxford on an open day and it was really funny because all the colleges were having merch wars... My fave was a nice little bag from Balliol - which coincidentally is one of the ones most applied to by physics students, I believe...

@Blue Sleep man!

10:14 PM
What did you get? There's actually nothing like the CS careers day - they're looking for more grads at that alone than there are available in CS...

@Avantgarde I'm dreaming about conflict theorists...sociology exam tomorrow

(So, we got lots of random stuff)

@Blue Oh man, good luck.

@Blue Erm... Enjoy? Hope it goes well

@Mithrandir24601 Thanks :)

10:16 PM
@Avantgarde :P :)

@Blue best of luck =)

@Blue Don't dream about conflict - there's enough of it in the real world already.

I got a flirtatious email, from a bot. This needs to stop.

Anonymous
@ACuriousMind lol....I sort of like their perspective the most ;)

Anonymous
@Avantgarde wow...bots can flirt nowadays?

10:18 PM
@Avantgarde Not up for some bot booty? :p

@Avantgarde my mind just short-circuited

Same

@Avantgarde We Bots also have feelings, you know.

lol ACM

lol

10:19 PM
Well ACM is Nines Rodriguez in disguise..

@Blue Apparently. @CooperCape Nope! I'm guessing that's an okay preference to have? :P

@CooperCape How would I be him in disguise, given I'm looking like him? :P

@PhysicsMeta what did they do to you?

@Avantgarde anything goes nowadays

Can't argue with that

10:21 PM
@ACuriousMind I had to google search for image that... disguised enough for me...

@Mithrandir24601 ?

@ACuriousMind In Interpersonal Skills SE chat (the brilliantly named Awkward Silence) they occasionally talk to the feeds (the also brilliantly named Extroverted Main Man and Introverted Meta Man. [yes, the '.' is part of the name]) and argue about the difference between bots and feeds, so I've taken this and started it in Worldbuilding and now, here :)

Anonymous
@Mithrandir24601 Sounds fun...we should start it here

@ACuriousMind Yeah, let's not dream about conflict, let's make it happen.

10:28 PM
What would be the name for our Main Man ?

@Mithrandir24601 I think we mostly berate PhysicsMeta for being a bit slow in here :P
@Blue We don't have a bot posting main site questions into the room because that would be pretty annoying at our question rate :P

@ACuriousMind Interestingly, so is Introverted Meta Man....

hmm, hmm, witty name for physics meta bot...

@Blue @John Rennie

@heather Aristotle

10:29 PM
@heather metaphysics is a bit too... predictable

"My nema Jeff" - Physics Meta Bot

(Aristotle was the author of the original metaphysics, originating the name)

Hmm...

Anonymous
@ACuriousMind Okay...we need to find a new name for our Meta Man/Woman atleast. He/She deserves it :P

Anonymous
Oh...first of all....decide the gender of our Meta bot XD

10:31 PM
Schroedinger's Bot - he both posts and doesn't post until he is observed (generally to not post)

@Blue I just proposed Aristotle.

eh, Aristotle is kind of meh.

@ACuriousMind lol...why?

10:32 PM
huh...that's better

it sounds like the bot's sneezing to say that aloud

@heather Pun? It's a meme.

?

I am hurt and heartbroken that you don't know Jeff

@Blue You just have no appreciation for ancient (Western) philosophy :P

10:35 PM
We also need a meme posting bot :P Oh, Balarka and AFT are there for that XD

@heather Know Jeff
And thank me later for changing your life forever.

i'm not clicking
anyway.
how about The Spherical Cow?

I feel I had a really good punny name for this chat come to mind recently but I fear I pushed it out of memory to store ideas about a sitcom about Greek gods...

Your loss. What a normie.

Anonymous
BTW....where's AFT? I haven't seen him around for long?

10:38 PM
@heather I applaud your decision.
@Blue Probably gone into hiding to craft better +--- memes.

Anonymous
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

-+++ for life
@ACuriousMind what?

Anonymous
@heather What's that?

Anonymous
A spherical cow is a humorous metaphor for highly simplified scientific models of complex real life phenomena. The implication is that theoretical physicists will often reduce a problem to the simplest form they can imagine in order to make calculations more feasible, even though such simplification may hinder the model's application to reality. The phrase comes from a joke that spoofs the simplifying assumptions that are sometimes used in theoretical physics. Milk production at a dairy farm was low, so the farmer wrote to the local university, asking for help from academia. A multidisciplinary...

Oh....lol

10:54 PM
yeah =D

@heather Let's take The Spherical Sloth or something like =P

@ACuriousMind Huh, in the US we call it a BS

Of course what you get in the US is BS ;P

@ACuriousMind XD
A mathematical joke is a form of humor which relies on aspects of mathematics or a stereotype of mathematicians to derive humor. The humor may come from a pun, or from a double meaning of a mathematical term, or from a lay person's misunderstanding of a mathematical concept. Mathematician and author John Allen Paulos in his book Mathematics and Humor described several ways that mathematics, generally considered a dry, formal activity, overlaps with humor, a loose, irreverent activity: both are forms of "intellectual play"; both have "logic, pattern, rules, structure"; and both are "economical and...
Wow, this is an article
On the page: "complex numbers are all fun and games until someone loses an i"

@SirCumference I guess that's when shit gets real.

11:09 PM
That follow up was actually amazing...
> If you liked it then you should have moved a mass inside its Roche limit.
These are amazing
