This is cool stuff, but it is too hot to think of daily uses
So if it rotates faster than all known fluids, what will that mean to their interactions

do people actually unironically think this?

@AccidentalFourierTransform funny
Hi @rob

rob
@0celóñe7 Hey, I was in your neighborhood today
@skullpatrol Greetings
@0celóñe7 I meant Knoxville, but I suppose you could be elsewhere for the summer still.

@rob I went home for a couple weeks

rob
@0celóñe7 Sounds nice. When does your term start up again?

@rob Hmm. Early 20s this month.
I'm going back on the 18th.

rob
@0celóñe7 Eclipse plans in place?

3:06 AM
@rob Admittedly completely disinterested.
I think it's ~200 mi south of me anyway.

rob
@0celóñe7 No, you'll be right on the edge of totality. Go to Maryville or Farragut and get a minute.

@rob Wait, when exactly is this?
21st

rob
August 21. In your area, totality is about 2:30pm local time.

Oh, my family will be in Knoxville then
basically everyone

rob
It'll be a party, then

3:15 AM
maybe @BernardoMeurer too
@BernardoMeurer anyway, are you coming or not?
@rob Yeah, nine of them

rob
@0celóñe7 Definitely go the extra 20 miles to see totality, then. Especially if you'll have young folks with you.

@rob yeah there are kids

rob
It's your big chance to be the amazing college scientist who knows things
Or your chance to threaten to eat the Sun unless the little ones do what you want
Your choice, really

@rob they already want to go to ut
Now I have to convince them that analysis is life
@JohnRennie There is something wrong with my pagefile
When I start the PC it's at 10GB

4:06 AM
Morning. So ... the monitor is sort of OK then :-)

Good morning.

@JohnRennie Maybe, having all sorts of issues though
i feel like this is an abnormal amount of issues
I can't figure out why my pagefile usage is so high
it's gone up to 16GB

Windows dynamically adjusts the page file size, so it's normal for the size to fluctuate.
As a rough guide you'd expect the page file size to be about the same as the amount of memory you have, so 16GB is about right.

@JohnRennie But why am I maxing it out?
I'm not using anywhere close to all of my RAM

Sid
Oh, @John You are here. Just explain me this, please.

4:20 AM
You aren't. Like I said the pagefile size will be about the same as the memory under normal circumstances.

Sid
"It proposes a new way to detect gravitational waves from the early universe using circular polarization of the radio waves from neutral hydrogen at high redshifts."

@Sid Source?

Sid
Apparently that's something my cousin was working on in his PhD.

@JohnRennie I made some good food
got the parents to buy expensive ingredients :)

@Sid Ah, that'll be related to this paper
@0celóñe7 Yes?

Sid
4:24 AM
@JohnRennie Yes. That one, apparently

@0celóñe7 I'm planning some super duper burgers at the weekend!

@JohnRennie A pound and a half of scallops and a bottle of wine
made a lemon-basil sauce to put on the scallops

With cream?

@JohnRennie cream and wine
@JohnRennie can't be bothered to fix the orientation i.gyazo.com/80a45c2e8313142c1a052a7fa604271b.jpg
this is doubling my skyrim mod workflow
the new monitor has LEDs

I have to say that looks great :-)
@Sid do you remember the stuff about the BICEP II experiment a couple of years back? This is the same sort of approach.

Sid
4:32 AM
No I don't.

oh my god, time to install this mod again
this is about the 10th time and it takes 30 minutes each time
@JohnRennie I am having trouble with some games not using 100% of my GPU so I can't actually get 144 fps.
I can't seem to figure out what the issue is

@Sid the idea is that gravitational waves generated during the inflationary epoch (the so called primordial GWs) perturb the CMB slightly, and this perturbation can be measured experimentally.

The internet can be spectacularly unhelpful

@Sid The BICEP II experiment reported measurements of this perturbation and was therefore proof that primordial GWs existed. This was before the LIGO detection so it would have been the first proof that GWs existed.
But sadly it turned out the effect BICEP measured was due to dust in the galaxy affecting the CMB, and not primordial GWs. It turns out that this dust probably swamps any GW effect so the measurement may not ever work (though they are still trying).
The point of the paper is that the radiation they propose to study may be less affected by the dust so it might b a better way to detect the primordial GWs.

4:50 AM
@JohnRennie Ok, started a game, pagefile usage shot up and fps dropped
Should I make pagefile larger?

Normally you let Windows manage the page file.

Clearly something is going wrong

Aaaaand here's Johnny... @BalarkaSen
in Mathematics, Jul 7 at 4:36, by Balarka Sen
heeeere's johnny

5:06 AM
how goes it? pal

@0celóñe7: well the nuclear option is to reinstall Windows 10 from scratch ...

@JohnRennie You're evil
@JohnRennie I will see if the problem exists on my old hard drive
But that will have to wait until tomorrow
I'm still figuring out my monitor settings

@Sid 0ce's new computer does that?? Impressive! No wonder its page file is so big.

@0celóñe7 no it was a serious suggestion. My view is that if you get the Windows install right from the outset you'll have a trouble free system for the life of the PC.

@JohnRennie What did I do that was not right

5:12 AM
If you think there's a fundamental problem with it then by putting in extra effort now you're saving a lifetime (the PC's not your's :-) of woe.

@JohnRennie I will have to see if my other installation, which according to you is "correct" has the same issue

@0celóñe7 I can think of anything obvious that went wrong. But then I don't know everything that you did.

@JohnRennie Just -- why is the pagefile usage 8GB on idle?
What even is this thing

@0celóñe7 That's a good call. Remove the new disk and the PC should just boot off the old disk as before.

@JohnRennie I'm not removing the new disk, I'll just manually boot off of the old one.

5:14 AM
What do you mean by pagefile usage? The physical size of the file?

Whatever this is
when it gets high my PC freaks out

What app is that?

@JohnRennie MSI Afterburner
I closed some Chrome tabs and seem to have decreased it

I have no idea what MSI Afterburner is measuring there

I will investigate more in 7 hours
gnight

5:19 AM
See you later

6:18 AM
When did people start using the word "kindly" when what they mean is "please"? I don't think I like this trend.

7:15 AM
NB: Path integrals are also used in non relativitic quantum chemistry (details later)

Sid
@DawoodibnKareem What's the difference?

> Pleas kindly close the door
lolololololollololololololol

Either use 'please' or 'kindly'. Not both

I strive to achieve unpleasant unkindness

Sure. If you want me to close the door, I'll do it, but I reserve the right to do it grumpily and unkindly. To me, if someone says "kindly", it sounds like they're issuing an order. "Please" is much more polite.

7:27 AM
Well, you're still being kind by closing the door anyhow.
So it's just an imagination of your figment that you are doing it unkindly. In truth, you are following the implicit order in the statement.

Must be a cultural thing.

They use "kindly" in the southern US.

@TheRaidersofLasVegas Aha, another place I've never visited.

I wouldn't close the door in the first place. Hostility should be unleashed en masse.

7:33 AM
Actually, that's a lie. I've been in the airport at Los Angeles.

I meant the south east.
The so called confederate states.

I broke a glass in one of the airport restaurants. They were very keen on me not helping them clean it up. I wonder if they were worried I'd sue them for something; or is that just a stereotype?

dunno
sounds like a stereotype

OK. My apologies to anyone I've just offended.

8:04 AM
Yeah it's (kindly) not to be taken literally :P It's just how it's said

There are two types of multiview displays:
Autostereoscopy is any method of displaying stereoscopic images (adding binocular perception of 3D depth) without the use of special headgear or glasses on the part of the viewer. Because headgear is not required, it is also called "glasses-free 3D" or "glassesless 3D". There are two broad approaches currently used to accommodate motion parallax and wider viewing angles: eye-tracking, and multiple views so that the display does not need to sense where the viewers' eyes are located. Examples of autostereoscopic displays technology include lenticular lens, parallax barrier, volumetric display...
and
which is literally multiview in that different people looking at the screen at different angle see different things
looks like those facebook newsfeed items , after 2000+ worth of junk, finally have something interesting to think about
Extension: Now if many viewing content can be broadcasted at the same time separated by viewing angle, how far can we extend this packing of information in a small space in other areas...

5 hours later…
12:47 PM
@JohnRennie where aaaaare you

Morning

Good morning.

Morning
@JohnRennie G-Sync is pretty amazing

@0celóñe7 Good :-) Worth the money then!

@JohnRennie Yeah, although the screen itself doesn't seem as good as my $150 one
I can't get the colors down to what I want
looks a bit washed out

12:51 PM
This pagefile problem, I'm not sure there is any problem.

But with G-Sync you can have a variable fps and never get stuttering or screen tearing
@JohnRennie Currently playing a demanding game on my old hard drive
Which there is a problem with the read speed, don't forget
It has a massive pagefile right now

@0celóñe7 I suspect the game is looking to see how much memory the PC has and then reserving it all.
Reserved memory doesn't show up as memory used, but it does reserve space in the swapfile, and I suspect that's what the MSI Afterburner is telling you.
So the pagefile usage that Afterburner reports is exactly as expected and not a problem.
Anyway, I have to get off. I'll you to try switching back to the new disk so you can compare it to the old one.

1:52 PM
What does this mean?
"Non linear oscillators,evolving from generic initial states"
what does generic inital states mean?

2:18 PM
some arbitrary initial condition?

The electromagnetic field feels weird.

user228700
Hi, everyone :-)

hey
how's uni

first day?
:-)

user228700
Nah, second.

user228700
2:23 PM
@BalarkaSen It's...OK.

How're your profs?

user228700
It's better than just OK today because a) I managed to muster the courage to answer a question that our Principal asked in class and b) They made me the class rep.! (@JohnR AAAH!!)

user228700
@Balarka: And how are you, man?

that's a great day by my standards
@Kaumudi same as i ever was
5 on a scale of 1 to 10 everyday

user228700
Smack right in the middle, haha, OK :-)

2:25 PM
actually, a little below the middle

user228700
Ah.

@TheRaidersofLasVegas the middle is 11/2 = 5.5 :p

ok, i gotta go for a while

user228700
Bye! :-)

@Kaumudi Good luck with life in general and your studies.

user228700
@BalarkaSen ...you're not going going, are you? :-P

lol no
just need a walk

user228700
@BalarkaSen You take walks? :-P Anyhoo, I'm still going to be around, man, but thanks! And you too but again, I'll be around.

Sid
2:37 PM
Colleges have principals?
Do you mean, The Director?

@Kaumudi.H Now you just need a decent dinner to round off the day :-)

Sid
@JohnRennie People tend to care too much about the quality of food.
That is bad, according to me.

Sid
I believe everyone should be able to eat everything sufficiently whether it tastes good or bad.
In the end, it will either be digested or excreted out. Taste is just a momentary pleasure

2:48 PM
lol
Been reading some nihilistic philosophy?

::preparing for food fight::

@Sid in an emergency (e.g. if I haven't eaten for five minutes) I will eat anything. But, food is a pleasure and I would prefer to eat nice food if I can get it.

Sid
@Avantgarde Just came back from attending a debate club orientation. So, nah. Not reading any nihilistic philosophy
(Also, those guys just plagiarised a rebus puzzle from the internet. Mutter)

@Sid Ah, how was it? I remember mine too, not so long ago
That happens

Sid
Pretty fine. I might join that club. It sounded interesting.

2:52 PM
good good

gud
Hate it when people type that way

gd
^that is worse, imho
:P

speaking of that, about a day or 2 ago, I saw a comment by you @John where you used it's instead of its
the grammar muscle inside me suffered a bad bruise

2:55 PM
spelling, not grammar, sorry

@Avantgarde that's one of my frequent typos. I know perfectly well that the possessive is its not it's but for some reason I frequently mistype it.

Thank you!

The occasional mistake you see are the few percent that I don't spot before clicking the Send button

I think that's quite common. I see the typo many times
in general, I mean. Not by you
I think that's both a grammatical and spelling error, I guess. That's a question for English SE
@TheRaidersofLasVegas gd is pretty bad, yes.

3:09 PM
@JohnRennie ayy now my fans are making a clicking noise
This PC is a mess
How am I doing everything wrong

The GPU fans?

One of them

Does it still spin up under load?

Yeah
Works perfectly just makes a clicking noise

Ignore it then

3:20 PM
@JohnRennie I can hear the noise!!!

Sid
@0celóñe7 Enjoy it, then.

[Chemistry] Currently learning Python

Sid
@Secret Python is a dangerous snake. Be careful

well the reason I am learning it is otherwise I cannot do my 120*40*3 calculation for Phase III of my PhD project

@JohnRennie at least I can play TW3 at 100fps
Pretty amazing
I think you should get it

3:24 PM
@0celóñe7 is it consistently 100fps or does it fluctuate?

@Sid Hows your college?

@JohnRennie fluctuate
There are no settings to lock it at 100
It goes above and below. But the amazing thing about Gsync is that it doesn't stutter or flicker
I tried to lower settings to get 144 but my GPU underclocks tjen

3:40 PM
Does this mean you will finally stop worrying about what fps you're getting? :-)

@JohnRennie no
But the random massive drops are gone

Are you back onto the new disk, or still using the old one?

Dropping from 100 to 70 isn't as bad as from 60 to 30
@JohnRennie I haven't gone back to the new disk. Computer is currently off and I'm doing other things

It'll be interesting to see if it all works as well when you switch back to the new disk.
There's no reason why it shouldn't ...

@JohnRennie I'll try a game right now. I was definitely getting better performance in GTA5 on the old disk this morning than I was getting on the new one last night.

3:48 PM
144 fps?

@JohnRennie the monitor has an fps monitor
144 Windows is very smooth
Seriously, the mouse movement is so much better on the left one

It's interesting that it improves even Windows.

@JohnRennie Ok, GTA seems to be running better. I would believe that the pagefile was the issue, because with only the app and auxiliary monitoring apps open, I'm only using 11GB.
When I was using 15, it was slow.
@JohnRennie I wish I could take a video and send it to you, but you probably don't have a 144Hz monitor and I don't have a 144Hz camera :P

:-)

@JohnRennie I can't get over how good G-sync is
@JohnRennie Now the sad reality is that lots of games are fps-locked.
For example, the Elder Scrolls/Fallout physics engines are fps-dependent so going above 60 makes things go crazy.

4:09 PM
@Kaumudi.H occasionally, through various labyrinths and such. counting cats on the way is my favorite game

Sid
@PhyMan Awesome people, okay-ish professors.

user228700
@JohnRennie :-) I didn't eat tonight; I'm not feeling very well.

Sid
@Kaumudi.H Mentally, Psychologically or Physically?

user228700
I had been looking through the my syllabus for the first sem. and man, I am so excited to learn all of these things!

Hi everyone!

4:23 PM
@Kaumudi.H ah that's a shame.

user228700
@Sid :-P Exactly what is the difference b/w "mentally" and "psychologically"?

user228700
@BalarkaSen Lol, OK :-)

user228700
My only worry, however, is that I may not have enough time on my hands to learn all of them to the depth to which I hope.

Anonymous
@Kaumudi.H Do you have a pdf of the syllabus?

Anonymous
Sounds cool

Sid
4:24 PM
@Kaumudi.H This: balboahorizons.com/…

user228700
Hang on...

I just wanted to ask whether I can define Energy as "the abstraction of a system's ability to do work" (because this helps me get a slightly more intuitive feel of it but this definition might be incorrect therefore I need someone's approval) PS: I have been struggling to understand the concept of energy since a really long time.

user228700
@Blue Here :-)

@Kaumudi.H All the best for your college years :)

user228700
Thanks :-)

4:27 PM
@Abcd there isn't really a concept of energy because the term is used so imprecisely it can mean many different things.

@Sid Hows the canteen?

@ACuriousMind I read your answer to the gauge theory question. Very nicely written, take a +1 from me.

@Abcd we all go though a phase of wondering exactly what energy is, but sadly there is no simple answer.

@JohnRennie I :(. I am referring to the energy we learn in physics during high school years

I looked at it a few days ago but didn't really understand gauge transformations enough to appreciate it.

Sid
4:28 PM
@PhyMan It's pretty nice. The food is fine. But, then, I eat just about everything irrespective of its taste.
So, I have to go ask my friends how it is

Anonymous
@Kaumudi.H Are the first 2 semesters same for all departments?

@JohnRennie Is my definition incorrect?

user228700
@Blue: In my first sem., I've got Calculus, Engineering Physics, Engineering Graphics, Basics of Electrical Engineering, Introduction to Computing and Problem Solving and Introduction to Sustainable Engineering.

Anonymous
You have Chemistry also!

@Abcd the thing is that your high school teachers have to oversimplify to keep things understandable for school children.

user228700
4:29 PM
6 courses in total!

@Sid Then why eat food ? you can directly eat all required elements :P

user228700
@Blue Not all of them, no.

@JohnRennie Will I ever understand energy?

Anonymous
@Kaumudi.H Oh. So no Chemistry :P.

user228700
@Blue In our second sem., yep! :-)

Anonymous
4:30 PM
I see

Sid
@PhyMan They don't give that to me. :P

@Kaumudi.H Do you like chemistry or not?

@Abcd your definition is a commonly given one at school level, but for example it doesn't help explain the energies of quantum systems.

Okay...

Sid
Heh, I have 8 courses this semester...

user228700
4:30 PM
@Abcd Well, it depends on the sort of Chemistry of which you speak; I don't like OC and Inorganic very much but I do like me some Physical Chemistry!

Anonymous
Same here. 8 courses

Anonymous
No environmental science and chemistry though

@Kaumudi.H Oh. I like OC and Inorganic chemistry but not physical :p

physical chemistry is very good. organic, neh

user228700
We've got a bunch of labs as well but I dunno about them yet.

Anonymous
4:32 PM
Enough of Chemistry while studying for JeE. :P

user228700
@Abcd Oh, wow, I see.

@JohnRennie do you understand energy?

user228700
@Blue YES. I do hope that the Chemistry I will need to study next sem. isn't too bad.

Sid
I have Basic Electronics Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Safety, Maths, Physics, Communicative English, Bio. With Chemistry and Engineering Drawing being labs.

Anonymous
@Kaumudi.H We had a carpentry workshop today

4:32 PM
@Blue nevertheless, chemistry is quite interesting
JEE stuff is not much

Anonymous
Very boring...carpentry

Anonymous
@PhyMan Agreed

user228700
@Blue Oooh, what did you do?

@Blue My coaching chemistry Sir said, "Chemistry shouldn't be in JEE syllabus". I was shocked!

user228700
@BalarkaSen I agree!

4:33 PM
@Abcd Good for us ;P

Anonymous
@Kaumudi.H Cut wood with a saw. lol

user228700
Oh, wow x'D

Is it like a course?

@PhyMan No way! Chemistry is my strongest subject

Anonymous
Yeah, carpentry and machine fitting is a 100 marks course :P

user228700
4:34 PM
We were meant to have CAD/CAM lab today but the lab hasn't been set up yet.

@Abcd I would be better of without it this year

@Abcd Energy is easy to understand when you're dealing with elementary particles. Energy in complex systems like springs or in thermodynamics is harder, but it is ultimately derived from the properties of elementary particles.

user228700
@Blue Omg! x'D

Sid
That damn biology is still sticking with me.. :-(

Anonymous
Our sir that he will give us full marks if we just attend the classes regularly. So that's good XD

user228700
4:34 PM
Awesome!

@Blue Please tell me its sarcasm

Anonymous
@PhyMan Nope. pinch

well then, build something useful :p

user228700
@JohnR: The trouble with staying here is that I only have a limited number of hours to be productive :-( I'm worried that I may not be able to finish syllabus again if I go into all my subjects in depth.

user228700
I'll bring back my cycle with me this weekend so that I won't need to spend so much time walking around for starters!

4:37 PM
@Kaumudi.H I would just go with the flow for now. See how you get on.

user228700
That is what I'm doing...

Anonymous
@Kaumudi.H Maybe this is the time to decide what you want to specialize in and focus the most on those subjects. For example at the moment I've decided to focus mostly on physics and programming so that I can participate in a project work with the physics department profs next summer. However, don't neglect other subjects

@Kaumudi.H It isn't like when you were studying at home because the lectures and the set work set a schedule for you.

I could do a bunch of things now. Flip through some gauge theory idly, study chemistry for exams. I also haven't done high school math in a while. But would I do any of these three things?

Anonymous
Nope. Go to sleep. :P

Anonymous
4:39 PM
Oh. I forgot. You never sleep

that's, like, not even, like, a suggestion, man

user228700
@Blue Ah, hmm, you make a good point. I plan on meeting with a few of my profs. (One dealing with AI and the other is a coordinator with IEEE) to talk to them about C.N because I discovered that there is a program here called B.Tech with Minor.

user228700
I may be able to score credits for taking courses-from other universities-relating to C.N (which I will do).

Anonymous
@Kaumudi.H Sounds cool. Good luck with that!

Sid
@BalarkaSen Study Chemistry and Math simultaneously.
and if you feel bored, go through Gauge theory

4:41 PM
@Sid Ah, good suggestion. So now I will learn some gauge theory.

user228700
@JohnRennie YES, and this really is quite a relief. I'll figure it out as I go...

Thanks for saying what I wanted someone to say to me.

user228700
@Blue Thanks! :-) How are ur profs.?

user228700
@JohnR: And how was your day?

user228700
Lol, I've realised that now, people will begin complaining about us speaking of Engineering in this chatroom, replacing JEE.

4:44 PM
@Kaumudi.H Profs are more or less nice. One of our maths teacher is a PhD student and not a full time prof. Also the English teacher.

user228700
Oh, cool :-)

@Kaumudi.H frustrating. Windows 10 installtion problems. But I'm about to dash off to meet some friends for a drink, so things are looking up :-)

user228700
Oh, dang. Oh, that's nice, have fun! :-)

user228700
I'll also dash off, then; I gotta...dang, I think I gotta adult and clean the bathroom.

user228700
See you tomorrow :-)

4:48 PM
@JohnRennie aha!
That's karma

@0celóñe7 :-)
Right I'm off to get beer
See you all tomorrow.

5:31 PM
@JohnRennie As I can understand, in the QFT there is an operator of the Fock Space in every point of the spacetime. So, $\mathbb{R^3} x \mathbb{R} \rightarrow \mathbb{F}^\mathbb{F}$ is the signature. I still can't understand how can they get out a Lagrange from it. I see everywhere simply vector field Lagrangians in the formulas.

5:51 PM
@JohnRennie All of a sudden my SSD is half as fast
This computer is a disaster
