17:00
Anyone??
@JohnRennie priorities, priorities
user228700
Wait, they're going to ship it?!
@Kaumudi.H huh? I assumed you would download it.
@Kaumudi.H Steam doesn't ship games
user228700
They're asking me for my address :-/
17:02
@Abcd It's not really clear what sort of help you want - can you be more specific about what is unclear to you about that exercise?
@Kaumudi.H probably just for their records ...
@ACuriousMind The path of the motorbike (why is it projectile motion?), the place from where it is launched are unclear to me.
user228700
Why do they have "Cash on Delivery" as an option, then?!
@Abcd I have to say the question isn't clear to me either.
@BalarkaSen yes, iterated integrals are a thing. I was not talking about iterated integrals though.
17:03
@JohnRennie Alright.
The actual mechanics of a motorcycle jumping the gap would be very complicated. At this level I would treat the motorcycle as a point mass.
@JohnRennie But length of motorcycle has been given, so how can it be a point mass?
I don't see how it helps giving you the length of the motorcycle. You'd need to know where the centre of mass of the motorcycle was.
@JohnRennie Do you still own a motorcycle?
@BernardoMeurer No. Not for 30 years. I'm far too old and feeble to ride a motorbike these days :-)
17:05
@Abcd The text says where it leaves the road. The length information appears to be superfluous.
@JohnRennie Could you just tell me how did you decide that the motion of the point mass is projectile in this case?
@JohnRennie Which one did you have back in the day?
user228700
Awesome.
@Kaumudi.H you've got it?
user228700
Nope.
17:06
Why awesome then? Or is that irony?
@ACuriousMind What does "where it leaves the road" imply/mean?
user228700
So I closed the tab in which I was to fill my address and all but now I've removed the item from my cart and tried to purchase it again but it says "another transaction going on" :-/
@BernardoMeurer Most fun bike was a Yamaha RD350LC. Most powerful was a Suzuki GS850.
@Kaumudi.H Is there a link to show your shopping basket?
Anonymous
@Abcd Any point mass thrown at an angle to the horizontal will exhibit projectile motion (in presence of downward gravitational field). I think in your problem they are asking for the velocity just before reaching the edge.
@JohnRennie Nice! Which one was in the picture you posted here a while back
From a trip to Rome IIRC
17:08
The 350LC was totally insane. The power band was so narrow that you couldn't use top gear below 70 mph :-)
@Blue Okay. TY
@BernardoMeurer that was the Suzuki 850.
user228700
@JohnRennie Yeah..?
I just wondered if you back into the shopping basket is the game still there?
user228700
Not after I removed it.
17:10
@JohnRennie I've been considering getting a rice burner in the US, mostly to not depend on their bad public transportation
I've never used the Steam web site so I don't know how it works. If you want to give me your login details (on gchat!!!) I can have a look.
@BernardoMeurer my instinct is not to spend money until you have to. I'd go with public transport first as a trial and only buy a bike if it's too horrible to bear.
user228700
I've managed to find that original transaction but now they don't allow for net banking and need me to enter card details and there is no way my mom is allowing that.
@JohnRennie There are just some super cheap bikes, lol
@Kaumudi.H 58 rupees ...
user228700
3 minutes to complete transaction? Why, thank you, I won't! I'll wait it out and see what happens.
17:13
@ACuriousMind John Baez says Kirchoff laws are basically differential conditions in cohomology.
vOv
user228700
@JohnRennie NO!
John Baez is one of the physics world's good guys. Even if he has mostly left physics these days.
Did you know he is Joan Baez's cousin?
Relativistic or not?

Q: Time delay in a rotating frame

XynonI would like to ask about two similar cases that I imagined, about the time and phase delay between rotating objects. The examples are similar to the "Case 2" from a previous thread (How do different reference frames give different results (such as in Bell's Paradox)?). Case1 Imagine two obs...

good 60's music
17:16
@Kaumudi.H it would be rude of me to press you, but honestly if I dropped 69p in change I probably couldn't be bothered to pick it up.
user228700
...transaction has been cancelled but also not, apparently.
@BalarkaSen I hate folk music.
@Blue I have seen that emote several times but I have no idea about what it means.
Hey, guys, I've got a bounty running over at Math.SE on a question about a CM system. I think that it might get more attention over here, but it is really a math question more than a physics one. Any advice?
@BalarkaSen He also says it goes back to Weyl, so I guess it must be true :P
17:17
Here's the link if anybody wants to read it: math.stackexchange.com/questions/2336318/…
@BalarkaSen as in I will run out of the room screaming if folk music comes on the radio.
@Blue It's the 3rd of July & I haven't visited the nearest reporting centre yet :P
user228700
@JohnRennie And it would be extremely rude of me to just let you buy things for me!
@Kaumudi.H I let him buy me things :P
17:18
(not 69 factorial)
@Yashas It's a hand raised in a waving motion or for a high five
@BernardoMeurer Do you want a Vangelis LP?
I have one right here
@JaimeGallego Huh? Yeah! Vangelis is badass
user228700
@ACuriousMind o/
17:19
What's the catch?
Anonymous
@Yashas You toh got in IIITH already XD.
user228700
:'-(
@BernardoMeurer I didn't buy you anything. I gave you stuff I had lying around unused. Likewise Kaumudi. There are sinister overtones to middle aged men buying things for teenagers and I'm not keen on that!
@Blue yea :P
Last time I got a "free" LP it cost me my body
17:20
@BernardoMeurer You need to call the Apotheke and ask for the same brush
@JohnRennie My mom knows about you
@JaimeGallego Hahahahaha
Anonymous
@Yashas Even I haven't attended the JOSAA counselling. :P
Anonymous
Nor the BITs Pilani one
I wish we could coordinate all the EU people on the h-bar
To call that Apotheke
and ask
17:20
@Blue me too :d
and btw IITM is in the court becaz of JEE Adv results :D
Anonymous
They demand 2 lakhs for just admission in BITs Pilani. lol
user228700
@JohnRennie That's not really true, you know :-P You bought me that power cord!
Anonymous
@Yashas I know. There are chances of a re-test! Come to the other chat room
I also linked this a couple days ago in chat. It's one of my top 10 songs of all time.
17:21
@Blue impossible
@Kaumudi.H true. Though again that was a trivial expense. If I was planning to entrap you into debt slavery that wouldn't have been a very promising start :-)
user228700
Haha :-)
Anonymous
@Yashas Yeah. Apparently
how can they conduct a retest when less than 1 month is remaining for college
user228700
Well, it looks like I'll have to wait a while before I try again...
Anonymous
17:22
@Yashas It happened once in 1997
Anonymous
They gave 2 months of prep time
@Kaumudi.H contact their support?
@Blue I hope it happens again :D too many ambiguous questions and random bonus giveaways
@Blue 1997 JEE paper was leaked which is why there was a retest
@ACuriousMind I am actually liking this analogy of Baez.
user228700
@JohnRennie :-/ I'll just wait...
Anonymous
17:25
@Yashas Yup XD One of my Chem teachers had given the 1997 test and said that the re-test was much tougher than the original test.
idc anyway IIITH is better than majority of the IITs (including some of the old ones) :P
@BernardoMeurer Friday morning. Berlin Hauptbahnhof. BJÖRN, JAIME, and BERNARDO walk out of the 11 o'clock S-Bahn. They all turn and head for their target; the local pharmacy. Upon entering, they each grab four bamboo brushes, throw some money at the counter, and leave.
user228700
Anyway, @JohnR: Thanks so much for offering to pay and also for telling me about the deal in the first place! :-D
Anonymous
@Yashas I know. Since you are gonna take CS anyway that's one of the best places to be. On the other hand I am quite impressed with the JU's Physics faculty and willing to stay here. :) Way better than the NITs!
@Kaumudi.H Bear in mind the deal only lasts until Wednesday 5th
17:27
@Blue isn't it easier to get Physics than EE?
user228700
Yes, yes, I checked :-)
Anonymous
@Yashas Obviously. But the peer groups aren't good in Physics stream.
user228700
@Blue JU?
Anonymous
The students who choose Physics there are the ones who couldn't get in any other stream.
@Kaumudi.H The Steam web site is a bit pants isn't it?
Anonymous
17:29
While for CSE the cutoff is 150 rank.
@Blue if you had taken Physics, you could have written KVPY and got a transfer to IISc
it is harder for UG students though
I think only one or two get transfer
user228700
@JohnRennie Yes :-( I hope I'll be able to try and order it tomorrow...
Anonymous
@Yashas Not willing to take any more risks with my career
Anonymous
@Kaumudi.H Jadavpur
@JohnRennie Well, you're supposed to use the Steam client, anyway, so I think they don't really optimize the normal website much.
17:30
@Kaumudi.H Have you tried downloading the Steam client software?
@Blue "Offers were made to general category applicants selected with ranks of up to 215, 1 and 215 for the KVPY-SA, SB and SX streams respectively." :O
only AIR 1 got transfer :O
@ACuriousMind The steam client is basically just a web browser
@BernardoMeurer The store always loads and works more smoothly for me in it than in an ordinary browser, though
@Yashas @Blue What the fuck are you people talking about
@ACuriousMind Lies
@BernardoMeurer too many things; you need to pinpoint the message
17:33
@BernardoMeurer No, something much worse: Anecdotal evidence :P
user228700
@Balarka: I read those paragraphs (twice) and it didn't, um, it didn't really answer my original question but I did understand some of what you said...
@Yashas What's: KVPY, IIS, UG, KVPY-SA, SB, SX, AIR, CSE, NIT
@blue "Offers were made to all OBC(NCL) category applicants selected in KVPY SA and SX streams." -____________________________________-
user228700
@JohnRennie Nope. Do u think I should?
user228700
@Blue Nice! :-) Congrats.
17:34
@ACuriousMind :P
@Kaumudi.H it's just that ACM said the client was better than the web site. But then Bernardo disagrees.
user228700
Oh, I see. I'll wait till tomorrow and see if anything changes...
@BernardoMeurer KVPY, IISc = Indian Institute of Science, UG = undergraduate, {SA (11th grade),SB(UG 1st year),SX(12th grade)} = application streams, AIR = All India Rank, CSE = Computer Science & Engineering, NIT = National Institute of Technology
@Kaumudi.H: I had more to say but stopped because you were having a wild video game chase.
user228700
@BernardoMeurer University Admissions.
17:35
How do I add friends in the Steam web site? I've created an account but I can't see any Add friends links.
In any case, I hope you understand why the crisis does not really imply inactivity.
The existential thing does not end in itself.
user228700
@BalarkaSen Not really, no. (I'm sorry about earlier :-/)
@JohnRennie Try in steamcommunity.com
@Yashas @Kaumudi.H That system sounds messy
@BernardoMeurer it is messy
@BernardoMeurer I have a friend who has visited a dozen countries and lives in a mansion but gets CS at the 2nd best college in India with a rank of 5k just becaz he belongs to a special class
17:37
Absolutely no need to apologize. I do not play video games as of late, but I do advocate them.
and for us (general category students), we need a rank within 60 to get there
Lower is better?
@Yashas What are classes?
@JaimeGallego lower ranks are always better?
Why didn't he just go study abroad?
17:38
@BernardoMeurer because no sane college would accept him
Oh, ranks in the standard sense
@BernardoMeurer some crap government invented to get more votes
user228700
@Balarka: And I also don't get how that self hatred was a "base, disgusting..." pleasure to the underground man.
I lived in Rio, which I think has better HDI that most Indian cities, and I wanted to get the hell out of there ASAP :P
@JaimeGallego Aha, OK. Got it :-)
17:39
I also have NRI friends who get into NITs with 2200 SAT score -_______-
user228700
@JohnRennie What you attempting to do?
@BernardoMeurer Ordem e progresso, hein
@Kaumudi.H I'm just playing with the Steam site. I created an account to see what happened.
@Yashas Huh? He got a 2200 on the SAT and stayed in India?
@BernardoMeurer wth
user228700
17:40
@JohnRennie I see, OK...
any student within rank 3k in JEE can get 2400/2400
@JaimeGallego The motto is perhaps the only right thing in the country
@Kaumudi.H It took me three goes to find a Captcha I could read!!!
user228700
@JohnRennie Same effing here!!!
@Kaumudi.H That is basically a subtle and less extreme form of sadomasochism. You should read chapter 4 from the book; the man himself elaborates on it.
Anonymous
17:41
@Yashas wtf...lol XD
Anonymous
SC,ST,OBCs rule the country :'D
user228700
@BalarkaSen Sure, OK. Thanks...
@Kaumudi.H is into S&M?
@Blue More than 3/4th my friends who belong to the reserved category are richer than me -,- in fact, they can pay 2lpa coaching center fees :d
@Kaumudi.H I finally got to the page that allows you add friends, but when I search for Kaumudi I don't find anything. However i think that's because you have to configure your Steam Community details separately from your account for buying games.
Presumably you'd have to do that to be visible in the Steam Community.
user228700
17:42
@JohnRennie Hang on...
Ok, about why the existential crisis does not end in itself, I have a movie to suggest. It's called "Stalker" (by Andrei Tarkovsky).
It's on my top 5 list of movies and is frequently listed as one of the best films of all time.
user228700
@BalarkaSen Does not end in itself...hmm, OK, I'll check it out. Thanks so much for trying to explain. I still don't get most of what u said but thanks anyway! I'll definitely check it out.
Anonymous
@Yashas Same here. I know people who are getting into KGP and Bombay with 9k rank while I'm only getting Dhanbad and some of those newer ones XD I feel like shooting them down.
Ah that teenage sense of humour :-)
@JohnRennie Lol
Search for "Arengorn"
user228700
17:46
@JohnR: Search for me now.
@Blue Um. Please don't make implications of violence like that, even in jest.
@JohnRennie lol
user228700
@JohnRennie x'D
@JohnRennie Heh, I think you have to verify your account
Probably some verification email
Anonymous
@Yashas I'm applying for my voter's card _. I'm officially adult now XD
@JohnRennie Wonderful site you have gotten yourself into.
I like it.
It may also be that you need at least one game in your library to use Steam fully, then you should just pick one of the free ones.
@BernardoMeurer I sent a stalking friend request.
17:48
@JaimeGallego I accepted it
user228700
@JohnR: What's ur username? Just John Rennie?
@ACuriousMind I did receive the verification e-mail and verified it ...
@Kaumudi.H jhsrennie
user228700
@JohnRennie Found you, not able to add you though.
user228700
I'm kaumudi1.
Same error that I got?
user228700
17:48
Yep.
@JohnRennie I added ya
user228700
> You'll have access to all of Steam's features once you've spent $5.00 USD in the Steam store or added $5.00 USD to your Steam Wallet.
user228700
That explains it.
@Blue I'll turn 19 in almost a month. I still don't have a voter card :d I got my driving license in december :p
17:50
@Kaumudi.H "There are no users that match your search"
@Kaumudi.H I still can't find you ...
user228700
Wtf...
Anonymous
@Yashas Oooo. Even I started learning to drive a few days back. :) Clutch, Brakes, Accelerator, Gears.....it's confusing initially
user228700
17:51
@BalarkaSen Ah, this one again x'D
user228700
@Mithrandir24601 @JohnR: OK, so I'm not kaumudi1 (but I am an idiot). Try reachkaumudi.
I really hope I could game sometimes
Today I found out what steam is
I miss playing War Thunder
@Yashas That's the beginning of the end
@BernardoMeurer I am not interested in it
I am immune towards games/movies/fast food/etc
17:52
@Kaumudi.H Memeulous fan?
@Yashas So was I
until I found one with airplanes and WW2
and that was the end of me
all I wanted to do was explode italians
@Bernardo lolol
@Yashas Hide yo kids hide yo wallet
user228700
@BalarkaSen That a YouTube channel?
@Kaumudi.H Yes, that works :-)
Anonymous
17:54
:38538879 You'll like Balakrishnan's lectures then. They're awesome. Check out the Classical Mechanics lectures.
Yes. You have never heard of it?
So how do I add $5 to my wallet. Where is the My wallet link?
@Blue Huh, I don't understand anything in FLP Volume 3. My math is so bad that I can't study physics -,-
user228700
@BalarkaSen No, never...
@BernardoMeurer Italians are great though. Fillipo Marinetti kicks ass.

"Zang Tumb Tumb", the futurist manifesto
17:56
@JaimeGallego aha, thanks :-)
@Kaumudi.H Here is one to get started: youtube.com/watch?v=fbIyAOhNRGs
user228700
@BalarkaSen ...I see.
user228700
Thanks!
Oh well. I have to go fold my washing. Then I have a novella to read and a bottle of beer that just has to be drunk. It's a tough life.
user228700
@JohnRennie :-) Have fun. Night!
user228700
17:59
@Balarka: Is that The Stalker or just Stalker?
just Stalker. directed by Andrei Tarkovsky
user228700
I found it on YouTube but unfortunately, I dunno how to speak Russian :[
user228700
Never mind, I found one with them.
@Mithrandir24601 Hey do you maybe know why it follows that if a measurement is made on a system in state $\rho$, which has final states $\{ \tilde{\rho}_n \}$ with corresponding probabilities $\{ p_n \}$ then we have that $$S(\rho) - \sum_n p_n S(\tilde{\rho}_n) \leq H[\{ p_n \}]$$
where $S$ is the von Neumann entropy and $H$ is the Shannon entropy.
@Kaumudi.H I actually have a copy of it on my laptop, as part of my Tarkovsky collection. That seems to be a fine version.
user228700
18:04
Wokay! I'll watch it soon and let you know what I thought of it, if I do have anything even remotely interesting to say about it...
user228700
(To be clear, that I might not have anything interesting to say reflects poorly on me, not the film)
I was dumbstruck after I watched it; it probably won't be your fault if you don't have anything interesting to say.
This seems to be a version with better quality.
user228700
See I, being...what was it? Ah, a lumpen bourgeois, may not be dumbstruck :-P
user228700
@BalarkaSen Thanks!
@JohnJack 'fraid not :/ I've only ever used the von Neumann entropy once and Shannon entropy never
18:11
It's somehow unbelievable to me that any conscious human being is incapable of feeling something out of this film, but sure, give it a try.
user228700
I will, I will :-)
user228700
I'm just preparing you for potential disappointment, that's all :-P
Whoa, that upload really has fantastic quality. It's from April this year; strange. It's not a super-popular movie, even though well-recognized.
I guess it got a sudden burst of attention due to the Tarkovsky movie session in UK
(from 2016?)
user228700
If you're asking me, I have no idea.
Oh, that was just me speaking out loud.
user228700
18:16
I was actually going to watch a Wes Anderson movie but I'll watch this one first.
I have heard of that director.
user228700
Cool review. I have heard good things about him too.
I will get some work done then try and watch "Primer" I guess. Apparently it's a weird cult movie made by a math major lol.
I have watched Primer twice
It looks like my kinda thing
user228700
18:29
And I will go to bed because mom.
And assuming I understood correctly this is the Primer movie you are talking about then:
Primer is a 2004 American independent science fiction drama film about the accidental discovery of time travel. The film was written, directed, produced, edited and scored by Shane Carruth, who also stars. Primer is of note for its extremely low budget, experimental plot structure, philosophical implications, and complex technical dialogue, which Carruth, a college graduate with a degree in mathematics and a former engineer, chose not to simplify for the sake of the audience. The film collected the Grand Jury Prize at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival, before securing a limited release in the United...
Shane Carruth, yes.
then IMO, it is the best time travel movie ever written. You have to be very picky to find plot holes in this one
I will let you to watch it without spoiling it
::Back to work::

18:47
@Mithrandir24601 Okay kewl no prob.
19:26
@dmckee Did you see the C compiler I linked the other day?
Some OG stuff
@BernardoMeurer That's about as "legacy" as they come.
But at least it appears to be the bootstrap version so it is more or less readable to anyone who knows K&R c.
@dmckee It's amazing to see how far we've come
20:23
@JohnRennie I would describe it as carrying the same denotation, but a less abusive connotation.
Friends might josh each other with the screw form, but not so much with the f--k form.
That said, I would discourage either form in the h bar because (a) this is a public forum and doesn't just involve a group of friends but also any passers by and (b) because the denotation is the same.
20:59
Why does the science lady in iron man 3 show Tony Stark a rotation matrix
She's a geneticist
Is she gonna rotate some DNA
@Slereah That's the rotation to twist the DNA helix :P
Might be protein folding
21:47
@ACuriousMind What a twist
22:04
The fifth transformers movie makes 3 sense
Hi, everybody.
22:35
is there any conceivable way it would ever be possible to measure a muon at 10^23 Hz for at least a mean lifetime?
that's as ridiculous a request as it seems, right?
23:26
@GPhys 10^23 Hz in what sense?
