@0celo7 I know (well, "know") the conditions that need to hold for Fubini's theorem. My point was just that iterated integrals are a thing.
Anonymous
Apparently Person s = new Student("Jose",12345) and Student s = new Student("Jose",12345) gives the exact same result
OK, you can assign Student object to a Person variable because Student is a subclass of Person. However the object is a Student not a Person and when toString is invoked it will be the Student.toString function that is called.
Anonymous
@JohnRennie Oooo "assign Student object to a Person variable because Student". Now it makes sense :D!

Thanks
Why is there so much causality theorems
I could write a whole book on just that

Has anybody tried downloading Road Rash for free?
That game reminds of old times.
@Kaumudi.H were you thinking of trying one of the various emulators to run it?
user228700
...I don't know.
Stay away from gaming, it's too addictive.
Anonymous
Why would someone try to download a 15 year old game? :P
15:11
Because it's good.

Heh :D

I don't remember when I last played a video game
user228700
@JohnRennie I've downloaded it but I'm unable to find which file to run to set up the game :-/
Anonymous
I have an allergy towards video games :P
15:12
I gave up on games a few years ago
@Blue there is some entertainment value in playing the old console games, although i find it rather limited.
can't get myself to play another afterwards
user228700
I've never actively played many video games; I used to play GTA Vice City at my uncle's place now and then but that was all...
@Kaumudi.H where did you download it? Have you got the link? I ask so I can have a look and see exactly what it is you have downloaded.
user228700
And Road Rash as well, when I was about 5 or 6.
user228700
15:13
@JohnRennie Here.
RoX is another old school, but good, game.
user228700
Don't know that one.
Once you get into RPG you're hooked.
user228700
And the stupid movie website won't allow me to see what movies are playing in theatres near me:
@Kaumudi.H I suspect you'll struggle to get that to run on Windows 7 x64.
user228700
15:18
user228700
@JohnRennie :'-( OK.
Local blockbusters are total crap so that's good anyway
user228700
@BalarkaSen My aim is to get out of this room.
user228700
@AccidentalFourierTransform Stress buster :-P

There are better ways to get out of this room than watching local blockbusters...

@BernardoMeurer Did you participate in GSoC (or planning to participate) ? I'm not very sure of the procedure, but would I have to select an organization and stick to it (and prepare myself accordingly) or can I apply to several of them depending on my skills (for example Java, Algorithms, etc..) ?
@Blue I have not, even though every year someone tells me to. You select as many as you want, write an application to each and wait
user228700
@BalarkaSen Dude, no, this room as in the one in which my physical self is residing. The room in my house.
Then you must pick one (only one I think) and that's that
15:21
@JohnRennie Well, DosBox works perfectly fine on Win7
oh. well that's a sad endeavor
Go for a walk @Kaumudi.H
user228700
The roads are congested. I try to cycle but that too quickly gets quite boring.
try a jog at a park

@BernardoMeurer Oh I see. Is it worth participating in it though? Does it improve one's skills ? I found it interesting (like coding for CERN and all) but also don't want to spend too much on it.

@Justwinbaby No park within 5 Kms of my house.
dig an underground beneath your floors and bury yourself there for 40 years
@Kaumudi.H: I might (allegedly) have copies of Doom and Quake that will run on your laptop. Though this may not be your type of game.
user228700
@BalarkaSen Sounds awesome. Brb.
@Blue It's a great CV boost, and you can get a lot of good experience

Alas I haven't done it, so take my opinion with a grain of salt
@JohnRennie you end up becoming Dostoyevsky or something
or simply die
We all die.
user228700
@JohnRennie I'll take 'em both, give video games a try.
15:26
or you turn into a cockroach, and recite Kafka
@Kaumudi.H you like games that are basically nothing but gratuitous violence? :-)
user228700
@JohnR: Actually, on second thought, give me a moment to decide which one I want...

@JohnRennie I don't mind them at all :-P
Typical women's decision

@Justwinbaby be nice now ...
user228700
15:28
Oh, wait, would I need a mouse to play these games? I don't think I have one...
@Justwinbaby What is that supposed to mean?
Ask google.
user228700
So incredibly scientific.
@Kaumudi.H Yes, for shooters like John proposed you would need a mouse, it's horrible to play these with a trackpad
user228700
> The researchers attempted to draw energy from Hell in order to solve an energy crisis on Earth using the Argent Tower, which siphons energy from Hell and allows travel to and from there.

Hmm, I may be able to steal one from my mum's PC...
If you don't have a mouse, enjoyable options are somewhat limited...I tend to play stuff like Nethack or Dungeon Crawl when I don't have a mouse, but I have no idea whether you'd like these.
user228700
No problem, I'll steal my mum's! Thanks!
@AccidentalFourierTransform random raccoon fact:
@Kaumudi.H gchat ...
@EmilioPisanty I dont get it
why the peaks?
15:34
@EmilioPisanty What happened in late 2016???
@AccidentalFourierTransform I went to wolframalpha.com/input/?i=raccoons+love+mathematica out of curiosity and it's in those results
probably some raccoon meme or something
those go viral
@AccidentalFourierTransform there's obviously been a few highly disturbing raccoon news stories over the years
or a meme, yes
"raccoons love mathematica" hahaha
15:40
@BalarkaSen you're probably right
published a day before the spike
top of google for April 2017
I was thinking it'd be some crazy "raccoon eats baby" story or some such
not me
:38535694 I kicked you because you were evidently not trying to participate in any sort of constructive conversation.
it was me. I dont like you.
@EmilioPisanty ¯_(ツ)_/¯
boy, doom was such a great game
I "wasted" so much time on that game
15:43
Doom and Doom II are surprisingly entertaining games.
I never got past a scene where everything becomes dark
@BalarkaSen I'm rather glad it was more along this
than along this
The quality of the graphics is obviously pathetic compared to modern games, but for sheer entertainment value I think they are still up there.
d'do d'do d'do do do do, come on, Rocky boy
What do you mean by "constructive" conversation? @ACuriousMind more importantly what are we "constructing"?
15:45
We are constructing constructions.
Constructively.
Anonymous
@JohnRennie Need some help with this one (paste.ofcode.org/qX4ZGy3aSc97HXkvVSSzJ9). "c1.a" is assigned the value "2" after "c2=c1". Then when we print "c2.a" why does it output the value "2" and not "10" as the object "c2" should be having the parameters of the initial "c1" and not of the final "c1" (i.e. after c1.a=2) ?
@Justwinbaby You were unwilling to explain what you meant by a statement whose ambiguity must have been obvious to you and replied with the rather rude "Ask google", which is completely pointless when the question is what you, personally meant by one of your statements.
Since you have repeatedly shown this pattern of evading any sort of question directed at you asking you to explain yourself, I considered it time to make it clear that that's not acceptable behaviour if you want to have a conversation with other people.
You're taking this way too personally pal.
Or, at least, not if you want to have such a conversation here.
15:49
@Justwinbaby Not particularly, no. ACM is acting rather reasonably as required of moderators.
There'd be grounds for saying he's taking things personally if the initial conversation had been with him, but it wasn't.
@JohnRennie 16GB of RAM is not enough
@Blue: I don't know java, but I suspect that your variables c1 and c2 are effectively pointers to objects. So when you set c2=c1 you make both variables point to the same object.
Take ACM's points under advisement, consider them seriously, and move on.
@BernardoMeurer I don't think you can get any more RAM in a E6530.
15:51
Ok, I have a possible suggestion for a constructive conversation: "How does one decide constructiveness of a conversation?". But I would rather like to discuss if that conversation, if conducted, will be constructive. Would that discussion in turn be constructive?
@BernardoMeurer What are you doing that you're running out of RAM?
Even if you could get 16GB modules of the correct spec the E6530 may not recognise them.
Anonymous

A: What happens when an object is assigned to another object

pb2q What I understand is the system will just copy the values of e1 instance into e2 instance. No, when you do e2 = e1 you're copying object references - you're not making a copy of the object - and so the variables e1 and e2 will both point to the same object. And so when you do your increment...

Anonymous
Yep! That's it! :D
15:52
@ACuriousMind If I say I get arrested
Let it go @BalarkaSen
@BernardoMeurer Ah, potatoes it is, then.
@Justwin I don't understand what that means. Don't speak in non-sequiturs.
@BernardoMeurer that would be an expensive experiment if you discovered that the E6530 only saw the modules as 8GB each ...
@JohnRennie True :/
15:55
You need one of the Dell Precision laptop range. They can take up to 64GB RAM.
I wish I had 128GB of RAM
My life would be easier
@JohnRennie Oh yeah that would be sweet
Unfortunately even four year old Precisions cost a bomb on eBay. They are much sought after laptops.
@EmilioPisanty Oh man what a nice machine
@BernardoMeurer it's a bit chunky for me
but it does look nice
15:56
@BernardoMeurer I bought a Precision M6700 with 16GB RAM and the same CPU as your E6530. It has a badly scratched lid and a slightly bent case, and it still cost me £325. Good condition ones go for £600.
@EmilioPisanty I like them like that, these laptops are indestructible
@JohnRennie Uff, harsh
@BernardoMeurer to each their own
The Precision laptops are built like tanks. They last forever.
I keep that search to hand in case any cheap ones appear :-)
laptop-bourgeois
@BalarkaSen it means the convo has turned from "constructive" to "destructive."
16:00
@BernardoMeurer my laptop weighs 1.82 kg
that thing is like twice the weight
@BalarkaSen absolutely not. These are your working man's laptops.
stalin sends you to gulag for being a laptop enthusiast
@Kaumudi.H bored with Doom already?
user228700
@JohnR: Is this game supposed to have most bad guys already dead? And also, this character just keeps on shooting without me specifically directing him to.
@Kaumudi.H Doom has lots of corpses scattered around as part of the scenery.
16:02
@BalarkaSen This is not the 40s anymore...
@JohnRennie How much does mine weight?
user228700
And what about this shooting thing? I lost all my ammo because this idiot kept shooting at walls for no reason at all!
You shouldn't be continually shooting. You press the control key or the left mouse button to shoot.
user228700
...neither of which I did.
16:03
@Kaumudi.H If you try it without the mouse does it still continually shoot?
@EmilioPisanty Kind of lame that it can only come with Maxwell Quadro cards :/
For that price I want Pascal
user228700
@JohnRennie Yeah, I'd been playing with the mouse.
@Kaumudi.H what if you disconnect the mouse and just use the keyboard?
user228700
...haven't tried that yet.
@JaimeGallego Cracked out loud at Lenin's resurrection
16:05
Oh lordy, I just received my books.
user228700
And what sort of game doesn't allow you to jump?!
dear old Komrad Ilyich Ulyanov
@Kaumudi.H As I recall you don't need to jump to play it.
@BernardoMeurer no idea what you're talking about, but sure, totally lame
@EmilioPisanty GPU's from Nvidia have their names after people. Current gen is Pacal, next gen is Volta, last gen is Maxwell
Quadro is their line of work cards, Dell only has Quadro M, not Quadro P for the laptop
i.e. last gen stuff
user228700
16:08
@JohnRennie ...wokay but there are all these places I could jump. Oh, well. I'll continue on, then.
and the performance, and specially efficiency, difference between Maxwell and Pascal is very meaningful
@BernardoMeurer it's a laptop
tradeoffs is the name of the game
But there is no trade here
Pascal is the same price, it's faster, and it's more energy efficient
@Kaumudi.H let me dig out my test W7 machine and I'll check the shooting.
@BernardoMeurer ¯\ _(ツ)_/¯
@Kaumudi.H I've just tried Doom 1 and with the default config it only fires on the left mouse button. For some reason it must be thinking you're holding the left mouse button down.
The Astrodynamics one has horrendous typesetting
Pardon my comment @Kaumudi.H I misread your comment upon review.
@EmilioPisanty @JohnRennie The new XPS line is really nice too
Dang small screens :-)
16:15
The XPS range tends to be more gaming oriented.
The Precisions are business oriented so they have no frills, just as much power as possible.
@JohnRennie I think they strike a good balance
"The Dictator's Handbook"
+1
Avert your eyes
Have you read The Art of War? @BalarkaSen
check it out
Crimes against typography!
i am not really into non-literary books
This book was quite influential though. They called it the BMW, because Bate-Mueller-White.
16:21
Cool name
user228700
@JohnR: Thanks! It doesn't randomly shoot anymore but I am tired of it already; quite monotonous. Nothing but shooting bad guys and gaining ammo/health!
Nothing but shooting bad guys - well, yes :-)
user228700
Damn, I wish I had the money to buy a game like Portals or something.
To be fair it gets harder as you go on, plus you have to find the keys to open doors. So it isn't just killing things.
Though it is mostly killing things.
user228700
^
16:29
I did warn you it might not be your type of game ...
I think it mainly appeals to teenage boys - even ones aged 56.
user228700
Yeah :-/ It was fun though. Sort of...
user228700
@JohnRennie :-P I see.
The only game that appeals to me right now is called "Getting out of debt"
I'm the protagonist and there is no way of winning
user228700
Yeah, sounds quite honorable.
Not a very fun game.
16:31
I have to decide what movie I will watch today. Or if I will.
@BalarkaSen Watch some 1960's porn
Danish
Good stuff
user228700
@BalarkaSen You never sleep?
@Bernardo I am into exploitation
the horrid stuff
::ahem::
Sorry. lol.
@Kaumudi occasionally
16:33
@BalarkaSen Same
@BernardoMeurer it takes until you're middle aged to complete the game. At which point ... well ... you're middle aged :-(
I need to reset my sleep cycle
@JaimeGallego Don't just keep going till you do a full cycle and come back to normal
@Kaumudi.H Do you know what sort of game you're looking for? Or are you so bored that you just decided to start playing whatever you can get?
@JaimeGallego I know that feeling
@JohnRennie Sounds lame, maybe I start trafficking drugs
16:35
@JohnRennie As so often, the winning move is not to start playing in the first place.
^ Financial Independence n stuff
i dunno maybe i might finally watch blade runner
too many unseen classics
Blade Runner is a good film!
user228700
@ACuriousMind I...I really don't even know what sorts of games there are.
So I hear.
16:38
@Kaumudi.H Oh. Well. :D
user228700
@ACuriousMind Why? Why did u ask?
Well, if you had some idea of what you were looking for/would like, I might have recommended something
I kinda miss the real time strategy games
user228700
@ACuriousMind Ah. I really wanna play Portals but I have no idea what else I'm looking for.
But this way, there's a high probability that you won't like whatever I suggest
user228700
16:40
@Balarka: Hey so how do you escape the truth in that line you so often like to repeat? "We're all gonna die anyway".
@BalarkaSen Why do you "miss" them? They still exist!
I don't escape it. Simple as that.
user228700
@BalarkaSen So it's a pervasive numbness, is it?
user228700
...with occasional moments of awe?
Did you read the book you bought on whim, mixed in with my suggestion?
:P
user228700
16:41
@ACuriousMind Are they all stuff I can download for free or do they cost money? :-P
user228700
@BalarkaSen No :-P I haven't been reading any of the books that I actually bought. I don't really know why.
Well, one can make proceed on moving away from the inactivity resulting from the vision of death every intelligent being is bound to feel, without refuting it. There are a number of comments to make on this at a literary level.
@Kaumudi.H Well, most of them aren't free, but some are.
user228700
@BalarkaSen ...that is the most general thing you could've said.
user228700
@ACuriousMind See, I don't have money :-P
16:43
Do you want me to elaborate? I can, but I am not sure how much detail you want me to go on. A little, medium, or brutal and fiery?
I am never sure how much time I am allowed to waste of a person I am talking to :P
user228700
Oh, I have lots :-P
user228700
Look:
user228700
user228700

10 rupees?
user228700
Yep.
user228700
@BalarkaSen ...brutal is OK.
Let me get to a good writing position
user228700
@JohnRennie Thanks! I'm checking 'em...
user228700
@BalarkaSen :-P Wokay.
16:49
@Kaumudi.H Because I'm such a generous chap I will donate 69p of my own money to buy you a copy of Portal if you want.
user228700
@JohnRennie Whoa whoa, no way. I'm not letting you pay for anything of mine ever again :-P
@Kaumudi.H 69p ???
@Kaumudi.H Is that the right game? Or have I got mixed up with different games called Portal?
Could someone please help me with this problem?
@JohnRennie Are you free to explain?
16:51
@JohnRennie It is a very good game in any case ;)
user228700
@JohnRennie I will not confirm because I cannot trust if u will go ahead and not buy it!
user228700
How much is 1p?
Anonymous
You can download portal for Rs.0 from pirate bay (proxyspotting.in/s/?q=portal+game&page=0&orderby=99) along with free viruses. :'D
@Abcd the motorbike is launched at an angle of 15º at some velocity $v$. All you have to do is calculate the range of a projectile launched at 15º and find the value of $v$ that makes the range equal to the width of the ditch.
@Kaumudi.H How many rupees to the pound?
user228700
p=pound?
16:54
@Kaumudi.H Ok. There's spoilers in there but necessary to answer your question. For one, I referenced the book once again because it is about a person who went through 40 years of extreme and violent existential crisis in his underground, with all his miseries and hate, turned inwards - there was a masochistic pleasure in this but the protagonist acknowledges that it is a base, disgusting pleasure and demeaned and dehumanized himself even more for this - and resurfaced from his own hell after 40 years of inactivity (which he concludes is his sickness/resultant of his visions).
Anonymous
1 Indian Rupee equals
0.012 British Pound
@Kaumudi.H No, p=pennies
i.e. 1/100th of a pound
Ah, 84 rupees to the pound according to that nice Mr. Google. In that case 1p is 0.84 rupees so the game costs 58 rupees.
user228700
...just did the calculation meself and Jesus Christ, only that much?!?!
user228700
Let me see if I can buy it on the website you linked...
16:56
@JohnRennie From where is it launched? I can't even understand it's trajectory.
So there you are. It's a mark of my extraordinary generosity that I'm willing to spend 58 rupees :-)
Secondly, by the very dialectical nature of existence, any inward crisis is counteracted by an outward crisis. Dostoyevsky etc writes about the inward crisis of man and the absurdity of it, but many of my other favorite writers talk about the outward crisis and the existence of the "unknown". Borges is one of my favorites precisely because of this; all of his writings (all short stories) are about labyrinths and infinities - the mesmerizing structures which human mind can not comprehend.
I also strongly like Tarkovsky and his films because of this.
user228700
@Balarka: Wait wait! I'll read what u wrote in 5 mins...
@BalarkaSen important game buying is in progress ...
