6:00 PM
Dell manuals are downloadable from their support site so I should be easy to check.

@JohnRennie Ok, for the sake of argument, suppose I want to get a mofo card newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16814487336
What upper bound on the price for the whole thing am I looking at?
I have a keyboard and mouse, but no monitor I'd want to use for this

@0celo7 Take a look at Logical Increments.

@JohnRennie 11GB
lol
who uses 11GB of GPU memory

Madness :-)

6:05 PM
I have 2!
@JaimeGallego interesting
wow
this is a LOT cheaper than I thought
maybe not a lot, but def cheaper
@JohnRennie Is 16GB necessary? I have 16GB on my laptop and usually use 12, but I never close things

@0celo7 don't know, but memory is cheap these days.

it's $50
not a trivial amount

Two nights out drinking? Maybe a single night if it's a big one :-)

@JohnRennie I was thinking in terms of analysis books, but ok :)
not that I need any more...

Skip two nights revelry and buy memory instead

6:10 PM
@JohnRennie also I can't drink for 2 years in America

Two restaurant visits then

Yeah, sure
So according to the website @JaimeGallego posted, I could get an "excellent" rig for $1116

Beware that it does not include peripherals (monitor, kbd, mouse)
Or Windows

A thousand dollars to play games?

@JaimeGallego Can I install one license of Windows on two machines?

6:13 PM
Yes.

Ok, I run Windows on my MacBook.

When you phone MS to activate it just lie.

@JaimeGallego I have a good keyboard and mouse already.
@JohnRennie o.o

@JohnRennie Pretty normal price for a high-end gaming PC, yes :P

Monitor, on the other hand

6:14 PM
Say your pc got a virus and it's a reinstall

What does a decent 1080p 24 inch monitor go for these days?

I bought my monitor from a Turkish student I met in Reddit
For $105

With IPS and all the bells and whistles

Or do I want 21.5

6:15 PM
Big is good. I'd go for the 24" screen.

I'm getting enough money for this next week as a pay check, so...I can just starve and have a good PC

In fact I use a 24" 1080p screen

@JohnRennie Do you want to send me a screen :)

Can someone please tell me how to approach this problem (not the entire solution)?
Not a homework question ( I practice problems ...) . Secondly, it might be a basic question but I am new to this topic..

I don't have a spare. Sorry.

6:16 PM
@0celo7 I have a Macintosh LC CRT screen from 1994.
Interested?

@Abcd integrate
@JaimeGallego Uhhh

@0celo7 I don't know integration.

I have an old 1920p mac screen from mid 2000s

@Abcd It would help if you indicated what specifically is unclear to you.

but it's really crappy

6:17 PM
In any case you'd have to pay the import duty. Donating stuff only really works well within the EU.

the colors are awful

@ACuriousMind The question. I don't have any idea how to find the position vector.

@Abcd You are given the constant velocity and the starting position. Finding the position after x seconds is basically just applying what "constant velocity" actually means.
What does the velocity tell you?

@ACuriousMind it's constant- in the same direction.

Oh my goodness, my glass is empty. Time to remedy that :-)

6:19 PM
$140 from Amazon

@Abcd Yeah, well, I meant more what "velocity" means - what is that quantity? Why are we interested in it?

Ok, time to make a list of parts
@ACuriousMind what's your opinion on GPUs?
Is the 1080 Ti worth it or just a 1080

Unless you want to do GPU computing I think you don't need the Ti.

@ACuriousMind Rate of change of displacement

@0celo7 PCPartPicker has a nice tool for making lists.

6:21 PM
The most GPU computing I do is monte carlo modeling of ion beams
and it works fine on my laptop
so I doubt the 1080 would struggle

@Abcd aha! Now, if it is the "rate of change of displacement", then how do we get the displacement after x seconds from it?

@JaimeGallego are CPU coolers just a meme?
my apartment is very cold

@ACuriousMind Displacement is 24 m. I know that.

CPU heat is no joke

(i.e. what does "rate" mean, in formulae?)

6:22 PM
@JaimeGallego does it not come with a stock cooler?

@ACuriousMind $ \triangle t$

Like can I try the stock cooler and if I get above some temp with regularity, invest in a dedicated cooler?

@Abcd Well, that's just the length of the displacement. What's the displacement vector?

@Abcd god, what is that giant triangle

@Abcd hehehehe. Normally the usage is \Delta, not \triangle, i.e. $\Delta t$, not $\triangle t$.

6:23 PM
@EmilioPisanty you mean \Delta

@EmilioPisanty okay

@0celo7 Yeah, that would work. Invest in a big case for a future upgrade.

@0celo7 $\Delta$

AMD or Intel?

@ACuriousMind 24 m in the given direction.

6:25 PM
I have no particular allegiance as of right now

@0celo7 CPU or graphics card?

@0celo7 you're like a friend of mine on first year, who took offense that our book insisted on using wedge-like squiggles that weren't even proper symbols

@Abcd Yeah. So it seems you actually know everything needed to compute the position! What's the problem?

(to wit, $\Lambda$)

@JaimeGallego CPU
Graphics card will be a 1080
@EmilioPisanty huh?

6:26 PM
I've heard good things from both.

@ACuriousMind I can't understand "what next".

Intel usually performs better for single threaded tasks

@0celo7 we were doing our first brush with relativity and the book consistently used $\Lambda$ for Lorentz transformations.

@Abcd Well, you know the displacement vector and the starting position. Add them together and you're done.

Why does it follow in QM that if we have a density matrix $\rho$ in diagonal form, then the diagonal elements of $\rho$ in any other basis is given by $\text{diag}[\rho = UAU^{\dagger}]$ for some unitary operator $U$?

6:27 PM
my friend missed a beat and didn't catch on to the greek-letter-ness of the symbol

@JohnJack Nothing to do with QM, that's just how base changes in linear algebra work :P

@EmilioPisanty are you saying I don't know what $\Delta$ is?
That seems...like a strange thing to say.

@ACuriousMind Oh. Wait. The problem is, do I have to multiply 24 with direction to obtain the displacement vector?

5 mins ago, by 0celo7
@Abcd god, what is that giant triangle

@EmilioPisanty Yeah?

6:28 PM
just sayin

He typeset a giant triangle.
Not a delta.
Just like $\wedge$ is not $\Lambda$.

@Abcd Well, you need a vector of length 24 that points in the direction of the velocity. If that direction is given by a unit vector (vector of length 1), then you just multiply it by 24. Otherwise you first have to divide by its length.

@ACuriousMind I thought that a change of basis of a matrix implied that there exists an invertible matrix, not necessarily unitary?

anyways
-19 total score in meta in 8 hours
that's some sort of record, right?

@JohnJack Sure, but changes between orthonormal bases are done by unitary matrices, and we usually assume orthonormal bases in QM and many contexts of linear algebra

6:31 PM
@ACuriousMind I understand thanks.

@ACuriousMind It's not given by a unit vector in this case.

@Abcd Exactly. So you have to divide that vector by its length, then multiply by 24.

God dammit, why is it like 1500 now
math!

@EmilioPisanty I'm not sure I want to see the results of a query that determines that :P

@ACuriousMind oh, yeah, no way am I writing a query to plumb the depths of meta for worse streaks
but this one is remarkable
seriously though

6:33 PM
@ACuriousMind Sorry. It's confusing. How do I divide 24 m in the direction of 2i hat - j hat - 2k hat by 24?

is it worth undeleting this one, possibly with some relatively-heavy-handed edits, just to save some drama?

@JohnRennie Do I need an optical drive?

@0celo7 yes, you do need to be able to see to be able to drive

well, i just looked at meta, and I see "How to contact Heather [etc]"
that's...different.

@EmilioPisanty what

6:38 PM
@ACuriousMind Simpler question: How to find velocity when speed and direction (in terms of orthogonal components) are given?

@heather yeah, apparently this was you
> One very senior person in the community was trying to mentor and help me get the question to be up-to-par

> Total: $1429.89
Ayy

@Abcd You multiply the unit vector of direction by the speed.

That's what I was expecting
@JaimeGallego what exactly does a sound card do?

@ACuriousMind "unit vector of direction" = direction vector/ scalar magnitude of direction vector. Am I right?

6:40 PM
@Abcd yep

@DanielSank you run PSE from a boat?

> AMD - Ryzen 5 1600X 3.6GHz 6-Core Processor does not include a stock CPU cooler. Adding a CPU Cooler to your part list is recommended.
Well fuck
This is too complicated

@ACuriousMind TY :)

@0celo7 You do not want a dedicated sound card. The integrated mobo ones work great.

@JaimeGallego but I do need a wifi card?

6:41 PM
You're building a desktop PC, right?

Yes

i don't even remember what question that was.

@EmilioPisanty Hm, boat programming wasn't a hit, but apparently boat physics is ;)

Ethernet is always preferable

6:42 PM
I don't have access to ethernet.

@heather I guess that's the biggest irony in the whole thing

@EmilioPisanty Imo, if he really wants to ask that question, he can just ask it again, without spammy bits.

Then you need a wifi card or one of these wifi USB dongles. I recommend the internal card.
They work faster.

@EmilioPisanty would you mind screenshotting it so I can see?

@ACuriousMind yeah, I don't think that would be that problematic
I mean, I think it's likely that it'd be closed again
but still
=P
hang on

6:45 PM
ok, $1500 for everything now
yeesh
and that's not including tax
this is a bit much

@0celo7 Ah yes, you 'muricans don't count tax

@JaimeGallego biggest mystery in the continent

I can get Windows through the school for free

why them up-north-but-not-quite-completely-up-north people do the weird no-tell-you-the-tax thing

I just picked stuff
@JaimeGallego reasonable?
I will try to make things cheaper if possible
it's pretty expensive rn

6:49 PM
@0celo7 You can absolutely settle for a lower tier PC if you feel it is too expensive. I built my own computer for $1000, including the Windows license and the peripherals, and it has never let me down once.
Expensive PCs are overrated
The GTX 960 is a damn fine card for $220 (when I bought it)

The GPU is really expensive but I don't have any idea what GPU I need.
I would like to be able to almost max out modern AAA games
If that requires a 1080, ok

A 1080 is seldom needed

@heather here you go: one, two
I do want to note that your edit did not fix the core problems with the post

@JaimeGallego is it better to be safe than sorry?

namely, the spammy misrepresented reference to a blog post of OP's own writing

6:53 PM
A 1070 saves $100

@0celo7 You can always sell your old card and upgrade later. That's one of the perks of PCs. Instead of making it future-proof, make it upgradeable-proof.

@ACuriousMind I guess what I'm asking for is the stat mech distribution for the Vlaslov equation
Although I'm not finding much on the topic!

@Slereah did you check the references in Straumann?

@0celo7 "Almost max out" new games in 1080p can be done safely by a 1060.

Does Straumann deal with Vlaslov with EM?

6:56 PM
No, but he references some stuff on it
@JaimeGallego So to be safe I should compromise and get a 1070?

@EmilioPisanty I don't think i realized the article was by him.

@heather don't take it as criticism ;-)
but the way it's referenced is a huge red flag

@0celo7 It all comes down to you. Watch plenty of framerate videos, such as these, do your research, and pick one.

"Just recently, the article [...] was independently published on the newyorkbusinessreview.com website ..."
rather too contrived to be innocent
so, worth a look before OK'ing the post

@JaimeGallego 1060 is barely getting 60fps in GTA5
not even 60 in WD2

7:06 PM
Again, your standards may differ from mine, but I think 60 is a very good framerate because most monitors (60 Hz ones) are incapable of displaying more.

of course 60 is good, but if you're getting only 60 on 2 year old games, what about games coming out this fall...

The sinking of the Rainbow Warrior, codenamed Operation Satanic (French: Opération Satanique), was a bombing operation by the "action" branch of the French foreign intelligence services, the Direction générale de la sécurité extérieure (DGSE), carried out on 10 July 1985. During the operation, two operatives sank the flagship of the Greenpeace fleet, the Rainbow Warrior in the port of Auckland, New Zealand on its way to a protest against a planned French nuclear test in Moruroa. Fernando Pereira, a photographer, drowned on the sinking ship. France initially denied responsibility, but two French...
how does this not have a blockbuster holliwood thriller covering it?

@EmilioPisanty gotcha, i'll keep that in mind in the future.

@heather $\Large 👍$

Operation Snow White was a criminal conspiracy by the Church of Scientology during the 1970s to purge unfavorable records about Scientology and its founder, L. Ron Hubbard. This project included a series of infiltrations into and thefts from 136 government agencies, foreign embassies and consulates, as well as private organizations critical of Scientology, carried out by Church members in more than 30 countries. It was one of the largest infiltrations of the United States government in history, with up to 5,000 covert agents. This operation also exposed the Scientology plot 'Operation Freakout...
@Emilio This is scarier

7:17 PM
@JaimeGallego Ok, I'll go with the 1070. Do you see anything in that list that I could trim down?
I looked at some benchmarks and the 1070 get a pretty good jump over the 1060

Hmm, let's see...

@JaimeGallego I dunno, man
the other one was an actual government doing the dirt

@EmilioPisanty because no one likes Greenpeace?

@0celo7 wait, there's no hippies in holliwood?

@EmilioPisanty It's not like the US isn't familiar with coups.

7:20 PM
@JaimeGallego oh, sure
but, you know

@EmilioPisanty they are beyond hippies

Iran-contra is not really a secret
also the Chile coup

Or the United Fruit one in Guatemala

It is quite well known

but then again, you don't see Holliwood talk much about Chile in the 70s

7:22 PM
distant helicopter noise

@JaimeGallego what's a good CPU cooler?
and how do i know if everything will fit in the case? Or does this parts website calculate that automatically?

The Hyper 212 EVO was the cooler for most builds
Pretty big though
The website warns of graphics card clearances, but I'm not sure about the fan.
Search the forums.

@JaimeGallego Clearances? There are big sales right now?
What formums? This is too complicated

@0celo7 I imagine clearances as in spaces between things

Oh
wtf the 1070 is $700 on Newegg
it's meant to be $450
Sold out
wonderful!

7:32 PM
Micro Centers usually have the cheapest prices
No stores in Tennessee, I'm afraid

@JaimeGallego ^?
15 miles away
I could stop by a store and get my garlic chicken ingredients too...
Fug, if I go buy it today I'm committed. That's scary

@0celo7 That's a good price AFAIK.

@JaimeGallego Ok. Should I get it today, then quibble about the rest? Or do I have to sleep on it, or what?

Sleep on it and buy everything at once when you've done enough research.

I don't really know what research to do at this point

7:38 PM
Then you don't have to worry about refund deadlines and such

Unless you have any suggestions on making it cheaper
I have to make sure the mobo + case are big enough for the fans. Not sure how to tell

@EmilioPisanty yes

@DanielSank I just realized you're just down the coast from Vandenberg
can you see SpaceX launches and landings from your town, or its vicinity?

The cooler usually has movable legs for several types of motherboards. Case specs should give the length available for coolers and GPUs.

'coz that makes the region go rather upwards in the travel priority list

7:44 PM
@JaimeGallego Ok. But again, do you see any places where I can make the build cheaper? Maybe go without and SSD and see if it's too slow?

@0celo7 if you do ditch the SSD, go for a hybrid
i.e. a small bit of SSD storage for the OS &c, and a spinning disk for the rest

Do not wait for an upgrade to buy an SSD. It's a bitch to uninstall the OS on one disk and reinstall it on the other.

@EmilioPisanty I think people have seen them, yeah.

@0celo7 I don't see much to cut.

Now I'm reading that I should get an i5 7600K
That plus an intel mobo adds $20 to the price

7:47 PM
@DanielSank on the other hand, I think most launches out of Vandenberg land on the drone ships, which makes them harder to observe

@EmilioPisanty link to a specific one?

first result off of google
i.e. not selected on any particular grounds

I know what they are
but I don't know how to choose one
newegg.com/Product/…-22-178-996--Product
that's only $50 less than a regular HDD and a 256GB Samsug SSD

@0celo7 I would tell you to go for a full SSD
but I don't know what kind of savings a standard HD would give in your configuration, or how that compares with other cuts

@EmilioPisanty I can get 256GB SSD + 1TB HDD for \$150, or a 2TB SSHD for \$100.

7:55 PM
@0celo7 Hey
I have 20 minutes

@BernardoMeurer Michelle is just now telling people she's coming to visit btw
She doesn't know they've planned to visit
She literally talks to you more than to us

Hahahaha
@0celo7 You're building a dektop? Or buying a laptop?

desktop
modulo hard drives that's looking like the build
Although I might go for an intel CPU, that will add like 50 bucks
because there's no fan yet either

U nuts
8GB memory?
Can we do this tomorrow? Give me a budget I make you an entire build in an hour
Then we modify it over skype

Anonymous
@BernardoMeurer Need your help. Why isn't nextLine() working in this code? The string value in str doesn't seem to get printed along with s. Here's the code!

7:59 PM
@BernardoMeurer that might change

@Blue Which line
@0celo7 Give me a ballpark figure
You want this for gaming, right?
