@JohnR: HEY, I did OK in today's class! He even let me switch to 3rd gear!

Hm, how do you fix the gauge in GR?
The coordinate conditions fix the diffeomorphisms, but what about rotations in the frame bundle?
is it also fixed by it?

user228700
@Kenshin Dunno.

Also how does gauge fixing work, anyway
If we have a PDE of the gauge field $\Box A = 0$ and some initial conditions $A_t = C$, are we guaranteed a unique section?
Is this true for any spacetime topology and geometry

@Kaumudi.H The first movie is very, very groundbreaking in science-fiction films.

@Slereah The so-called Gribov problem is precisely that a globally consistent choice of gauge is generically not possible.

11:26 AM
@ACuriousMind Damn you Gribov!

user228700
@BalarkaSen Yep yep, I know.

Be advised that Videodrome is very disturbing. It gives disturbing insights on the post-modern cyberpunk age.

Is it at least true in a globally hyperbolic spacetime?

user228700
@BalarkaSen I figure that most everything you recommend is possibly quite disturbing (except David Bowie sometimes) :-P

In what circumstances is it shown to be possible, anyway
I'm guessing at least Minkowski space for $U(1)$ gauge

11:28 AM
Well, Tarkovsky is not disturbing, say, depending on your definition of disturbing
and he's really an integral part of my taste in films

user228700
> depending on your definition of disturbing

user228700
Well, yeah, of course.

user228700
@BalarkaSen Hmm, I see...

user228700
Right now though, I'm going to have lunch and watch some Deadpool.

ugh
absolutely disgusting movie

I've heard lots of interesting things about that movie so I figure I should watch it.

Meanwhile this program does makes me wonder about something: If we are given the following string:

abdcfghrkdfsbcgdjeabdbacdhnfjjfcbdbdbss

we as humans can rather quickly find out where the 3 nontrival pallidromes are, yet a computer will take $2^{|s|}$ steps. I wonder how are we able to achieve that...

Hello,I am trying to finding the minimum moves to make a string palindrome I have come up with the following formula is it correct? We should make a matrix to keep the results .if first=last characher then $T(i,j)= T(i-1,j-1) $ and if first is different from last then $ T(i,j) = min ( T(i-1,j) , T(i,j-1) ) $

it's a weirdo slasher film.
with lots of over the top gore in it

I decided to watch it after I watched this video:

there's lots of meta references in it, yes

@yuggib hello

user228700
Say, from where do u usually download subtitles?

@BalarkaSen were you taught in school that a function is a special type of relation?

@JohnJack hello

11:46 AM
@Justwinbaby a function is a relation
this is not just true in high school, it's true everywhere whatsoever

@BalarkaSen Probably the 3rd time you've recommended Solyaris. Now I gotta watch that

bait taken

Thank you.

@yuggib You are an expert in QM? If you have a second please have a look at my post...it is very basic question.

The first Matrix is absolutely insane

11:48 AM
yea

Videodrome's summary is chilling. I like me some horror

@JohnJack Sorry but I do not have time right now; maybe later if I find some time I'll take a look at it. (Anyways, I am not an expert of quantum mechanics, even though I know some)

/nice thrill

@yuggib Okay no prob, if you have time later. It's just a question on the formula of rotation in QM...

@Avantgarde it's fantastic man

if some tricks strikes your mind, tell me.
we are give a box.
an isolated box with some wires coming out of it.
lets call this a blackbox.
inside, there is a circuit with some components.
we are required to calculate the components and draw the schematic of the circuit.

Not enough information has been given.

They will close the question in minutes.

If not seconds.
How many wires?

selectively give high and low voltages to these wires. Look at output from the output wire.
Compile a database.
compare with standard databases.
simple work.
(donkey's work)

What components are allowed?
Is there a power source in the box?

@Blue You must be a rich bloke.

I had a random dream about Golden Girls
Then I saw Betty white on the front page of reddit
Coincidence???

White ain't gold !!
always.
But of course:
Pure gold is slightly reddish yellow in color, but colored gold in various other colors can be produced. Colored golds can be classified to three groups: Alloys with silver and copper in various proportions, producing white, yellow, green and red golds; typically malleable alloys Intermetallic compounds, producing blue and purple golds, as well as other colors. These are typically brittle but can be used as gems and inlays Surface treatments such as oxide layers Pure 100% gold is 24 karat by definition, so all colored golds are less than this, with the common being 18K (75%), 14K (58%), and 9K...

@TheDarkSide are you unaware of the show golden girls

12:51 PM
@0celo7 Oh
That way.
Look, let's put it this way:
You know about Pauli's (famous) dreams.
People talk about him sensing his death in his dreams.
And he died.
You are on the right track!
(PS Everyone dies. No big deal.)

Are you saying I'm going to die?

Eventually.
In some 70-80 years.

Oh come on, I died alot in my dreams, but I am living and well

@0celo7 OK I think it's better for me to not be around for some time (maybe a week or so). Their best hitmen are after me now.

3:04 PM
@ACuriousMind so we are not allowed to satirize the leadership?

@0celo7 That's not at all what I said. E.g. "If it would be the real world, it would really be like a mafia" is not satire, it's just an insult.

@0celo7 Given that the community mods already have this chat room at the top of their watch list, wouldn't it be a good idea to stick to physics and leave the satire to one side for now.

I probably shouldn't've answered this, but I suspect there's a couple of close duplicates out there

Q: Reconciling Understanding of Quantum Entanglement and Superposition

W. Randy KingMy basic understanding is that Superposition is a property of particles that allow them to behave as if they are in multiple states simultaneously, e.g., interference patterns in double-slit experiment. Quantum Entanglement means that if I measure a state of one of two entangled particles, I can ...

if anyone cares to go looking for them

@ACuriousMind And it actually shows no understanding/knowledge at all of what Italian organized crime is.

3:20 PM
Anybody codes physics simulations here ?

I am doing math and trying to find some interesting examples as the applications of math in physics. I started with some simple examples to understand what is going on. I am wondering if my calculations are right.

1. Consider the potential field $W=\frac{(-y,x,0)}{4(x^2+y^2)}$ in the plane. Then the magnetic field of a particle of mass $m$ and charge $e$ is as $B=-\frac{m}{e}(0,0,\frac{1}{\sqrt{4(x^2+y^2)}})$. Moreover the path of this particle is the straight line.

2. Consider the potential field $W=\frac{(x,y,0)}{4(x^2+y^2)}$ in the plane. Then the magnetic field of a particle of mass
Can anybody help with this please?

@Mostafa Please do not joke about violence. This is what organized-crime violence looks like. If you're not 100% putting your weight behind the assertion that X behaviour is like that described in that article, then please refrain from that kind of satire.
You don't know the circumstances of the people reading this (public) chat, and the people you are referring to, so you don't know how badly your jokes are misfiring.
@Majid what's the actual question?
the calculations and the conclusions are correct, as far as I can tell
what else do you need?

@JohnRennie why would they have this chat at the top of the watch list?

I've been trying to figure out what would happen in a certain situation with coupled harmonic oscillators. Suppose we have three coupled harmonic oscillators in a row with the first and last ones connected to walls at the edges, and also to the middle oscillator. This is just a simple generalization of a system of two coupled oscillators, so it has three resonant frequencies.
Now suppose instead of the first and last oscillator being connected to walls at the edges, we instead connect them to each other. How many resonance frequencies do we have then?

@csss three
different ones, but still three
you still have three active degrees of freedom
so you get three resonant modes
as easy as that

3:30 PM
Geez, someone liked the fact that the "calculations and conclusions are correct" too much.

@EmilioPisanty Super thanks for your reply. I need to construct some more interesting example. Where I can see some examples where the magnetic field and potential are calculated? To get some idea.

@Majid what do you mean by "more interesting"?

@EmilioPisanty ok cool! Now consider the case of two acoustic gas bubbles in water, these can be considered a system of two coupled oscillators so they have two resonant frequencies at which they oscillate (collapse and expand), just like the regular harmonic oscillators. Now say you somehow managed to put these two bubbles inside another gas bubble (with a different density)..I know its artificial as the gases would mix, but suppose they didn't.
We now have one big bubble in water, with density rho_a, and it contains two smaller bubbles, both with density rho_b. How many resonant frequencies do you think this system would have?

@EmilioPisanty These examples are so trivial. I need something that gives me, for example, the math of the particle as curves not just straight lines. Or to work on the hyperbolic spaces and ....

@csss if you're in the linear approximation, then as many as independent degrees of freedom
@Majid hmmm, wait
your first conclusion is wrong
with any nonzero magnetic field, the particle tracks will not be straight lines in general
with a $1/r$ field it'll be some wonky path
if you want examples, just pick up any EM textbook and do the exercises
say, Griffiths

3:36 PM
@EmilioPisanty yes its linear, so does that mean three resonant frequencies? For a more realistic example, we could have a solid object in air, containing two hollowed out spheres filled with fluid. That is analogous real world object..and it would contain three resonant frequencies, right?!

@csss that would depend on how well the linear approximation works and that's for you to figure out
keep in mind that any extended object can have multiple relevant degrees of freedom
i.e. there's the breathing mode of an air bubble, say, but there's also quadrupolar twisting modes and so on

@EmilioPisanty Hmmm...do you mean by an extended object could have multiple degrees of freedom?
@EmilioPisanty Oh I am only interested in the lowest modes, the breathing ones.

For mod attention @dmckee @DavidZ @ACuriousMind @Qmechanic

@csss yeah, well, that's the thing
you're arbitrarily saying "I'm only going to look at this and this aspect of my system" and then asking "what aspects of my system do I need to look at?"
they're not compatible attitudes

3:40 PM
@TheDarkSide Gone.

@ACuriousMind Yay.

@ACuriousMind dammit, shoulda clicked straight away

@EmilioPisanty The actual true situation I was trying to setup is an elastic metamaterial containing N fluid filled regions. I was wondering how many 'lowest modes' such a system would have. Yes, I see what you're saying by the confusing way I phrased it, apologies!

@csss well, it kinda depends, because if the regions are coupled closely enough then the concept of "lowest mode" might not make sense any more
i.e. the coupling can affect your ability to disregard certain DOFs
but that depends on the details and you need an in-depth analysis to tell whether that's relevant or not

@EmilioPisanty Yes it could get very complicated in the case of an N inclusion metamaterial, as the distance between the inclusions will also impact the modes, and I imagine certain settings on the periodicity could bring the 'second lowest modes' down to overlap the lowest ones.

3:45 PM
@csss as I said, it depends on the details, so there's likely very little anyone here can say to help much

@EmilioPisanty ok cheers

the curvature vanishing at a point isn't too exciting

maybe to extend that definition to flat in a region later?

@Avantgarde looks more like death metal urbanized :P

@Slereah It's just as useless as "$C^1$ at a point"
aka "strong differentiability"

@DanielSank As I said last night, that was merely a joke that started with the query about the elite users. and I did drop it immediately last night. I don't know why some users still insist on continuing the discussion now. I never ever ever intend to annoy or disrespect anybody here. never.
@DanielSank I wasn't trying to get attention. I had to somehow justify JR's high rank in the chart and I made a stroy. I removed that quickly when saw 0celo's reaction to it (never expected anyone to take that even a little bit seriously)

@BalarkaSen It's not death metal. It's not really rap either. You can say it's rapcore. I'm gonna take it that it didn't suit you :D

@Avantgarde You don't do drugs?

@Mostafa Weird and bold question. But, no.

5:21 PM
@Avantgarde Neither do I

@Mostafa Welcome to the club

Does someone know if we have a circuit that we want to analyze with the node-voltage analysis and we can't find a node such that every other node is at most one branch away, like in the following picture, is due to linear dependency that we need to use a super node instead of node 4 just blank?

@0celo7 is it legal to own a lion cub?

8:25 PM
@DanielSank Consider the circuit of my picture, e.g. each branch consists of an impedance and/or a current source, now we want to use nodal analysis to get all voltages and currents in each branch and each node.My book states that one wants to choose a reference node such that we can reach every other node with only one branch, this is obviously not possible here.
Now we shall use the "complete tree" how it's called in german, you can see it in bolt, it connects every node and if you add a fine line you get all linear independent meshes.Now it states that we shall not use node 4 directly but instead make it a supernode such that it cut's only one of the bolt branches.

@DanielSank Oh, fancy

I've no idea why one should do that, but my first idea was that this has perhaps something to do that otherwise the equations would be linear dependent and we wouldn't be able to solve the problem...
sry for the lengthy text

@Slereah there are already people from China, India and Iran (and probably some European countries) in their group.

Anonymous
@Felix.C Your question seems unclear to me. I don't see any reason why there should be only one possible to reach another node from one particular reference node. Simple KVL or KCL equations can be used to solve such circuit problems. In fact any node can be selected as a reference node or grounded node.

8:52 PM
@DanielSank bash: telnet: command not found :-P
but it's cool that that still works (I'm taking your word for it)

Hi @DavidZ

@Blue No what I claim in my example you can't find a node such that you can reach every other node from the node chosen within a single branch...is that clear?

Hi, I'm just popping in for a few minutes

@Blue I'm aware of that you can chose whatever node you want as reference but in this example you won't find one such that, yeah it connect's every other node with just a single line, like in the example there is no branch from reference to node #5

9:10 PM
@SirCumference wait the crescent looked wrong?

9:25 PM
yo @0celo7 wad up?
@yuggib well said.
I don't read it as an "insult" at all.

@DavidZ Works for me, but ... I have no idea if is is Mac OS, the developer tools or homebrew providing it. Seems to be /usr/bin/telnet so not the latter, I guess.

10:16 PM
@yuggib Let $X$ be a B-space, and $A\subset X$ be a linear manifold. If $||\cdot||_A$ is a stronger norm than $||\cdot||_X$, is the completion of $A$ in the stronger norm contained in $X$ in a natural manner?

10:31 PM
@ArtOfCode what are you up to?

10:58 PM
@Mostafa ????

@0celo7 Is it?

probably depends on the county

there's probably not a federal law against it
