¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@Mostafa It's a left over chat account whose parent user was merged with AFT's account account - apparently @AccidentalFourierTransform once created a second account that was then merged.
ah yeah, I did that
now I remember
Why do I see fuckingn set theory
14:14
@AccidentalFourierTransform But why?
@ACuriousMind Can you merge me and AFT?
That would be dope
@BernardoMeurer I came here when I was self-studying QFT
I had an account for "good questions"
and one for "very stupid questions"
Lol
That's great
@ACuriousMind Go ahead merge AFT with Bernardo (∩ ͡°ヮ ͡°)⊃━☆
YES
MERGE
M E R G E
MERGE

lol
Hmm, I really don't like the mixing on Tame Impala songs
their latest album is terrible
I didn't give it a listen. Spotify suggested me I might like them so I pooped Currents on
But I just hate the mixing so much
It's like a sound engineer took a dump on the mixing board and called it a day
Fucking hipsters
To be honest the only bands I'm not ashamed of liking are King Gizzard and IDLES nowadays
And IDLES is a tough call because they're communists
I was listening to KG just the other day
Im not sure I like them
14:24
I got the "Tumbleweed badge"!
KG&LW grew into me, at first I heard Rattlesnake and thought "Well this is stupid"
@PrittBalagopal that's illegal
you have to give it back
How!
Enlighten me!
But then after a week or so I I found myself screaming RATTLESNAKE at people on the street
@PrittBalagopal ::grabs flashlight::
@PrittBalagopal let me see
first, tell my your password
14:26
@AccidentalFourierTransform Nice try,
lol
ur gonna get in trouble if u dont give it back 🙃🙃👹🎃👾👩‍🍳
@AccidentalFourierTransform Ummmmm... You're saying 3,171 people are in trouble??
lol

I got you good huh?
Random fun Phys.SE fact #1: ACuriousMind has used the now-discouraged word fuck more than 25 times before being elected a moderator, and even advocated its use, but never used it afterwards and even took strong stances against those using it.

Now, how do I bring my poor question to the spotlight
boobs tend to help
Random fun Phys.SE fact #2: All moderators eventually catch the M.O.D (Moderator Order maintaining Disease) . Those infected with the M.O.D have been observed to show an intense phobia for the swear words like fuck and bitch. Due to the authority they gain, they often order the non-mods to refrain from using, using the stance: decency, but the secret is that they are afraid of the words. Studies have shown a 10% decrease in humor with those acquiring the M.O.D.

Q: How do I keep a conducting ring aligned along a chosen axis?

Pritt BalagopalI have a conducting ring, and I want to keep it aligned along a particular axis. This would be easy if I could attach a battery to the loop and turn on a magnetic field, but here's the catch, I can't attach a battery to the conducting ring. So if I can only pass a current along ring, it's only du...

@Mostafa In the post you link ACM is telling someone not to say fuck you, which is rather different from using the word fuck. If you're going to have a go at someone please try to keep it factual.
in Physics Meta, May 18 at 11:59, by ACuriousMind
@heather I feel like I've said this often enough, but in case you haven't heard it from me or someone else: The issue is not with the words themselves, but with how they are used. There are (at least) three possible users of profanity: For emphasis at objects: "What is that fucking thing?", for emphasis at people. "What the fuck did you just say?", for insults at people: "Fuck you!". The first is generally fine, the third is completely off-limits, and the second is borderline.
14:44
@JohnRennie It was a mostly joke.
Hereby I testify that non of the claims (except the one that says he never used that word after his election, which is a good thing) are really true.

@PrittBalagopal The aim of your experiment is not really clear. Why do you "want to keep it aligned along a particular axis" ?
@JohnRennie Are you now free to explain the stuff?

Q: Where can Closed Questions and Comments Be Searched For - and How can Closure be Appealed?

Stephen Elliottבס''ד I have a question that was closed when I was just getting started as an author (again here after many years). I did not think the closure was fair, but I had no reputation to be able to do anything about it. One very senior person in the community was trying to mentor and help me get the...

@Abcd yes, I'm sat at my desk drinking coffee and relaxing so now is a good time :-)
@JohnRennie So I want to understand waves, electromagnetic waves, energy, electric field, magnetic field, (in any order that is acceptable to you)
14:46
Someone remove that from the star board before I get banned!!!
@blue, well it's related to Chemistry, Involving gaseous aromatic molecules...
What does uncertainty in uncertainty principle mean?
@Mostafa Done!
@JohnRennie Thanks :) I don't want ACM to think I don't love him
Anonymous
@PrittBalagopal You better explain the whole experiment in your question. Otherwise it looks like the question is asking for a "gun to kill a fly".
14:48
@Abcd Suppose you make some physical measurement e.g. momentum. You'll get some result $p_1$. If you do the measurement again you will in general get a different result $p_2$, and a third time will give you yet another result $p_3$ and so on.
yes
This happens because in general quantum objects exist in a superposition of states with different momenta.
right.
If you do the experiment many times you can calculate the standard deviation of your measurements, and that is the uncertainty.
For example the way the uncertainty principle is usually written is $$\sigma_x \sigma_p \ge \frac{\hbar}{2} $$ and the $\sigma$ in this equation means the standard deviation.
@blue I am not really doing an experiment actually.
I just want to find a way to align conducting rings (aromatic molecules) along a particular axis
14:53
@JohnRennie are you a GR expert?
@JohnRennie Alright
@JohnRennie Are you gonna explain the other stuff too today?
@Abcd I can talk about the electric field if you want ...
@Mostafa Moderators can't merge users, actually (they could some years ago, but not anymore)
Anonymous
@PrittBalagopal Doesn't matter. It always helps to describe what you are actually trying to achieve with the "thought experiment". Someone might suggest you a radically good idea to do the same! Also, aligning aromatic molecules are along an axis is not exactly equivalent to aligning a conducting ring.
@JohnRennie A brief explanation will work so that I get an idea of it
14:56
@Abcd Suppose you have some charged object, e.g. a Van de Graaff generator, and you put an electron near the charged object.
If the charged object is negative it will repel the electron, and if it's positive it will attract the electron.
I would appreciate it if someone could explain-to-OP/mediate/step-in/vote-to-reopen/vote-to-close here.
what happens if the electron is twice as electronic as the other electron?
But the charged object isn't actually touching the electron, so the question is how does it exert a force on the electron when it isn't touching it?
@blue Aromatic rings have delocalized electrons. It basically behaves like a conducting ring.
@Abcd: The way we explain this is that charged objects create an electric field around them.
Anonymous
14:59
@PrittBalagopal It "behaves" like a conducting ring. It isn't a conducting ring. Also you can't hold individual aromatic molecules in a magnetic field. The process to align them will be quite different.
@JohnRennie oh
@JohnRennie One question: there are no electric fields around us but why are there electromagnetic waves
@Abcd: If you measure the force $\mathbf F$ the field produces on the electron then we define the field strength as $$\mathbf E = \frac{\mathbf F}{e} $$ where $e$ is the electron charge.
turn me on with your electric feel
@JohnRennie ok
@blue looks like I'm toasted then
no way to align aromatic molecules, no way to create this:
15:02
If we measure position in space by the usual coordinates x, y and z, and time by t then in general this field is a function of both position and time, so we write it as $\mathbf E(t, x, y, z)$.
ok
But thats another story...
Though we usually combine x, y and z into a position vector $\mathbf r$ and write $\mathbf E(t, \mathbf r)$.
15:03
@Abcd: OK so far?
@JohnRennie Yes
@Abcd OK. In my example I talked about a stationary charged object, and that produces a static field i.e. one that doesn't change in time. But suppose we now waggle the charged object up and down. Now it produces a time dependent field.
The usual analogy is that if you waggle your hand in water it produces waves, and actually this is not a bad analogy.
@JohnRennie OK
Anonymous
@PrittBalagopal You want to create a 2D chain of aromatic molecules without any folding?
@Abcd So if I make a charge oscillate in a sinusoidal fashion it will produce a time dependent electric field that behaves like a wave travelling out from the oscillating charge.
And that's all an electromagnetic wave is.
15:07
@JohnRennie But there are no charges around me. But still there are EM waves
You need charges to create the wave, but once the wave has been created it will travel outwards from the charge that created it.
It's so warm in here my body has recalibrated and thinks I am back in Brazil
So the EM waves passing you were created by an oscillating charge and they will eventually lose their energy by transferring it to some other oscillating charge.
Last night I used diversion techniques walking home to make sure I wasn't being followed
@JohnRennie Where are these charges which produce waves in the vacuum?
15:09
Just to realize I am no longer in rio
@Abcd What waves in the vacuum? You mean light waves coming from distant stars? They were created by electrons in those stars.
@JohnRennie Infrared rays? Gamma rays?
Infrared waves are just long wavelength light waves and gamma rays are short wavelength light waves. They were all created by electrical charges.
@JohnRennie Ok. What's the frequency of an electromagnetic wave? What does it mean?
15:13
@Abcd Go back to the water waves.
@JohnRennie Is it same in the case of both?
If watch some point in the water you can count how many waves pass you in one second. That's the frequency.
It's the same with an EM wave.
I know that.
@JohnRennie Why high frequency results in high energy?
Remember I said an electric field creates a force on a charge? Well we can detect an EM wave by watching an electron to see if it moves. An EM wave will make the electron oscillate and if we count how many oscillations we get per second that's the frequency of the EM wave.
ok
15:16
@Abcd Suppose I give you a rock to hold and ask you to wave it up and down once a second. That doesn't take much effort does it?
@JohnRennie How can I wave a rock :S
@Abcd Hold it in your hand and waggle your hand up and down.
@JohnRennie Ok. Doesn't take much effort
Now I tell you to waggle the rock by the same amount, i.e. same distance, but do it ten times a second. Now you're going to have to really work at it.
And if I tell you to waggle it up and down 100 times a second you couldn't do it because it takes more energy than you can put into it.
Right.
user228700
15:19
@JohnR: (Ah, I see u're explaining something. Do go on, I'm just popping in to tell u that:)
As a general rule, if you keep everything else unchanged then increasing frequency takes more energy.
But ...
There is another meaning to high frequency = high energy.
user228700
@Kaumudi.H What did you think of The Ocean at the End of the Lane?
@JohnRennie (shouldnt that be "short" instead of "high"?)
I've been on a reading binge - four books this week.
user228700
15:21
@JohnRennie Four?!
user228700
What are u reading?
@AccidentalFourierTransform Oops, I meant high frequency though of course short wavelength is correct too :-)
@JohnRennie Ok. Thanks for the help
user228700
@JohnRennie Unfortunately, not very much. I liked it a little, yes, but I didn't think that it wasn't written exceptionally well.
Naomi Alderman - The Liars' Gospel
Naomi Alderman - The Power
Brian Hodge - Whom the Gods Would Destroy - novella
Tim Lebbon and Gavin Williams - Hush
Aliya Whitely - The Beauty - novella

15:22
Oh, all different books, I see...
@Kaumudi.H well I wasn't going to read the same book four times :-)
user228700
Huh? No, I figured u were attempting to read a series or something :-)
is pressure always relative? like voltage
@Kaumudi.H I find trying to read your way through a series isn't usually a good idea. You tend to find you get bored with the author and go off them.
Anonymous
@user2476549 No, not really. Pressure can be defined as force acting per unit area.
15:26
@user2476549 No. Voltage has what we call a global gauge symmetry, which means we can only ever measure a voltage difference.
But pressure is the result of momentum exchange and it always has an absolute value that we can (in principle) measure, though in practice we often only measure a pressure difference.
There is a well defined zero for pressure i.e. a vacuum, but there is no well defined zero for voltage.
user228700
@JohnRennie Huh, I see.
@Kaumudi.H I've made that mistake before :-)
user228700
Well, I watched read all three books of the Divergent trilogy in a row and loved them :-)

It's true that he's done an excellent job writing these truths in the voice of a 7 year-old child. I s'pose the problem is that I wasn't too keen on the subject matter itself.
I thought it perfectly captured the difference in world view between the man and the 8 year old boy he once was. And I loved the idea of the three sisters responsible to keeping our world safe, and the sacrifice that the youngest made.

The "self-esteem" guy was a good addition though :D

"Have you ever engaged in the recruitment or the use of child soldiers?"

@BalarkaSen I speak of the books, not the movies.

user228700
I liked the first movie but the rest were, as u say, bullcrap.
@BernardoMeurer Lying is a sin just as premarital sex is.
I think all of them are bullcrap, I am afraid.
15:44
@Mostafa I don't believe in sin
Oh no, let's not start this all over again!!! :-)
@JohnRennie Quiet, sinner!
@BernardoMeurer I'm an atheist I'm afraid, so I'M FREE FROM SIN!!
@JohnRennie You don't believe in God then?
15:46
@Mostafa I don't believe in the supernatural. Not in any form of the supernatural.
@JohnRennie Eh, it's a quite real TV show, how can you not believe in it?
Not ghosts, vampires, werewolves, fairies ... or gods.
Supernatural is an American fantasy horror television series created by Eric Kripke. It was first broadcast on September 13, 2005, on The WB, and subsequently became part of successor The CW's lineup. Starring Jared Padalecki as Sam Winchester and Jensen Ackles as Dean Winchester, the series follows the two brothers as they hunt demons, ghosts, monsters, and other supernatural beings. The series is produced by Warner Bros. Television, in association with Wonderland Sound and Vision. Along with Kripke, executive producers have been McG, Robert Singer, Phil Sgriccia, Sera Gamble, Jeremy Carver, John...

I have not. I think I've heard the name though

Life is a 2017 American science fiction horror film directed by Daniel Espinosa, written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick and starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson and Ryan Reynolds. The film follows a six-member crew of the International Space Station that uncovers what initially seems to be the first evidence of life on Mars; however, the crew finds their discovery might not be what it seems. The film had its world premiere at South by Southwest on March 18, 2017, and was theatrically released in the United States on March 24, 2017, by Columbia Pictures. It has grossed $99 million worldwide...
