Any reasons for the human verification on SE? It's not like a bot can write an answer... Making someone write something is a better anti-automation test than CAPTCHAs..

The CAPTCHA is probably mostly relevant for SO, which would get a bunch of spam bots otherwise due to its high traffic levels

Weird... well, you could try at least closing any tabs in which you have SE chat sites open and leaving them closed for a while. But I'll see if I can grab someone with higher-level access to figure out what's going on.

@ColinK Already checked, I don't think I can. I can suspend you from the whole of SE chat for a certain amount of time but I'm not sure if that would help

I'll look into it. I figure if I get stuck in there too then it's one more person who can reproduce the problem.

so I logged out of everything using the logout buttons on the sites. cleared cookies, restarted fireefox, and navigated back to phy.SE

When I first got to the site, not yet logged in, I saw this chat and Statics. Statics was empty, only you were in here

instantly when I logged in, I was in both chats

its probably some bit of information that didn't get updated when it was supposed to, and now there is no mechanism in place to fix it
