4:00 AM
you'd like it

sounds like it's quarantined. i probably won't log in
no what's that

What's wrong with an image board?

clearly you have not been on /b/

Depending on the images, of course.

@BalarkaSen What should a branch point be for a function $T:\Omega\subset\Bbb C\to\mathscr B(X)$
$X$ some finite-dimensional complex vector space

4:07 AM
Probably something so that a component of $T$ has a branch point at that point?

@KyleKanos In my opinion, the harsh homework policy should focus only to the lazy rep1 people.

also b looks pretty good

@BalarkaSen Hmm...is that well-defined?
And what would the order be? The maximal order of component branch points?

I think so

@peterh Eh? Rep 1 people are mostly newcomers.

4:10 AM
I don't actually know the multivariable story so I'm just guessing

I wonder who I know would know this

@2017 Yes, and they put most LQ hw copy-paste tasks into the site

@peterh I'm more worried about people who have more than 50 rep and yet post hw questions. They are people who aren't willing to learn and abide by the policies.

@2017 I think, the hw policy should work on a way, that only over a rep level can somebody post hw. Here is a new idiot, I can see already from the all capital question.

4:13 AM
What does @DanielSank have to say about this?

it's kinda terrifying what's lurking around the corners of the internet nowadays if you stop to think about it

BTW, let me tell you something. No matter how many policies you make on hw questions a first timer will hardly read through them while asking. I think we should focus more on people who have a history of posting low quality hw questions...

Terrifying? @BalarkaSen

@skullpetrol Indeed.

@peterh "only over a rep level can somebody post hw" If you do that I'm sure you will lose 50 percent of potential users.... For example even I started by asking a low quality hw question but I quickly improved my questions over time

4:15 AM
@2017 Maybe the limit could be then 500.
@2017 Ok, but your first hw question was closed then?

I guess @BalarkaSen if you're sensitive to that sorta stuff.

@peterh yes it was closed after getting an answer

@skull I didn't just have in mind what 0celo linked; i think there are snuff websites out there which focus on murder and gore. i probably won't link you
@0celo7 I'm done for today :P

Are we talking about dark web ? :-P

not even
Balarka discovered 4chan

4:19 AM
i knew 4chan, just not this sub-site

2chan used to be pretty bad

5 hours ago, by David Z
@heather Yes, but discussion about food doesn't have the same potential to offend people as discussion about sex does.
@DavidZ that statement is problematic.

Sure @BalarkaSen if you're looking for it, it's not hard to find; but that's true in real life too, right?

@DavidZ I think you underestimate how much Daniel's chili upsets me.

I had a nice discussion with @ACuriousMind (I think), about what "offensive" means w.r.t. moderation of this chat.
His definition was considerably different from the one implied by your statement.
I, and perhaps others, might appreciate a consistent definition.
That said, for the sake of your moderating, it might be best to not mention "offense" at all, since it's too hard to support the statement you made in a consistent and logical way. Instead, just stipulate that talking about sex is not allowed and end it here.

4:22 AM
Consistency is the backbone of fairness.

@BalarkaSen I have this statement that the branch points and orders are the same for some function and some operator, but I don't think it's proved. Also, the author doesn't define anything.
It's terrible!

@skullpetrol Yes, which is why I hope DZ and ACM will talk to each other about what they think "offense" means in this chat.
@0celo7 wat?

Quantum question: Since electrons are indistinguishable, why we can even talk about exchanging labels on them and that result in the wavefunction to flip sign. Is this phenomenon of flipping sign already encoded as a correlation between the two electron states in the wavefunction or it is due to physically trying to swap two electrons at two given positions?

@DanielSank Your food offends me far more than sex (and I'm a good Catholic)

@skullpetrol That's true. It's just more apparent when you got an internet to pour all the rotting humus from all over the world into.

4:23 AM
@0celo7 Right. This is why DZ shouldn't try to involve "offense" in the "no sex" rules.

hummus?

@DanielSank Feel free to substitute another word for "offend", then. "Bother", "irritate", "disgust", "repulse", etc. While I maintain the statement is true using any reasonable definition of "offend", it's not necessary to my argument to retain that wording.

ACM has a very reasonable way of using the word "offense". At least, I understand it, and it's not defined by how the recipient of a comment construes said comment.

that's probably the correct spelling. idr
@0celo7 Yikes.

@DavidZ Yeah but now we've got a problem: I am disgusted by other things people talk about here.
...but they're not forbidden.
Explain.

4:25 AM
You're just one person and not a moderator.

@DanielSank You might want to take up that last point with the people involved in the earlier discussion, who seemed to be arguing quite strongly that it's not acceptable to just stipulate that talking about sex is not allowed and end it there.
@DanielSank What would you like me to explain?
(I wonder if we should do that in the meta room)

@DavidZ I agree with them, but my point is that using "offensiveness" is indefensible, whereas blanket stipulations are because at least they're logically consistent ;)

::makes double popcorn::

@0celo7 Your avatar offends/bothers/repels/disgusts/irritates me :-P wtf is that ?

@skullpetrol I can has?

4:27 AM
Sure pal.

@2017 Your tie is giving me PTSD

Stop bulling each other.

But it's fun.

@0celo7 Oh, my love :-*

I want to talk about unicorns.

4:28 AM
@0celo7 lol

@DavidZ k

link to meta room pls

Unicorns and rainbows.

cops and robbers

Raiders and redskins.

4:31 AM
raiders and redskins don't have beef?
Yo Gotti and Young Dolph on the other hand

We hardy play you guys.

Soulja Boy and Chris Brown
Soulja Boy and Quavo Migos

Aren't you a titian fan yet?

no
who has time for football

You saw one game.

4:33 AM
@BalarkaSen Hmm.
I think I figured it out
Are branch points always some type of singularity?

Anyone here can help me on those two quantum concepts I just asked, in fact, is anyone except Acuriousmind and skullpatrol (which I knew they do) can even see my messages in this chat room?

OBE
I can

@0celo7 Depends on what you mean by singularity.

I can, but I'm not a physicist
@BalarkaSen Well I think that I should be understanding this in terms of analytic continuation
so the branches of an operator function makes sense

Near a branch point any hol. function looks like $z \mapsto z^n$ upto change of holomorphic charts. That's a covering space everywhere except $0$ (where the fiber above a point degenerates to a point) - I guess that's sort of a singularity?
Dunno what analytic continuation has to do with this but ok

4:35 AM
But is $f$ defined at $z=0$?

Oh yeah sure why not

@BalarkaSen You can move between branches by analytically continuing along loops, no?

$z \mapsto z^n$ is a well-defined holomorphic map $\Bbb C \to \Bbb C$
@0celo7 Ah I guess. Yes.

I suspect something strange is going on with my account in this chat room because it appears that recently half of the usual population cannot see my messages at all. I already have "ignore function" ruled out because that function will result in ignore in all chatrooms, which is not the case because at least one user can see my messages in e.g. maths chat but they cannot see it here. I might try to figure out what exactly went wrong

@BalarkaSen So there's a "canonical" analytic continuation here corresponding to a permutation of the branches.
I need to reread this section. But tomorrow.

4:37 AM
I think you got the right idea.

OBE
@Secret how can you tell?
also I think you have a point since your message just randomly appeared for me right now in between 0celo7 and Balarka

@OBE it's a rough guess. For example, yesterday when talking about the phdcomics, heather mentioned about the horizontal line on top of the graph, which I then talked about the answer might be x=0. Roughly 2 mins later, I posted the same thing in the maths chat and heather instantly can reply to me in response to my x=0 comment
This shows that somehow heather actually does not see my x=0 message in this chat room but had no problem in the maths chat room

OBE
or maybe she was afk?

(and more importantly this rules out that the cuase is the ignore function since ignore is global for all SE)
so something weird is going on in this chat room...

OBE
I'm sad because @0celo7 is disappointed in me/ doesnt care about me anymore.

4:45 AM
@Secret If one uses the "hide posts" option then messages are not shown in only one chat room.

@Secret You can do the hide-posts option

BTW I had "hide posts" on for you as your messages are so long that they fill up my screen space :-P
(now I switched it off again)

O I did not knew about the hide post option

@2017 I might try out your complex numbers question at some point

@BalarkaSen Which one?
The one which I gave 2 weeks back?

4:48 AM
Ya

Oh, great
:)

I am busy right now but I'll probably think about it today

5:15 AM
Ah, the good 'ole closing conundrum: what do you do when a new question is a duplicate of two existing ones taken together?
0
Q: why speed of alpha particle is a characteristic property?

PhysicsapprovalWhile reading my text I came across two statements as follows : Speed of alpha particle is a characteristic speed as it depends on nature of nucleus. Beta particle come out from same nucleus with different speeds so it is not a characteristic speed. Now I am unable to understand why alpha p...

Leave it open?
Combining questions leads to new questions, no? @dmckee
But, in this case, it is a conundrum.

5:53 AM
Look^ @0celo7 it's from Reddit

6:24 AM
@JohnRennie you may find this mildly interesting :-)

6:40 AM
@ACuriousMind nor did the Australians invent the kiss down under :P

1 hour later…
8:05 AM
If I consider a solenoid in which current $i$ is passing and then I consider one of the loop as the closed surface and then apply gauss's law for magnetism so the flux through the solenoid should be zero, right? But it is not :-( ??
because my shows it has a magnitude of $\int \vec{B}.\vec{ds} = \mu_0 ni\pi r^2$ where $n$ is turns per unit length and $r$ radius of solenoid ?

@ramsay How can a "loop" be a closed surface?
Upload a picture of your "closed surface"....

okay
how about something like this where red lines are the conducting wires of loop ( pic in few seconds)

@ramsay Hmm, that red line doesn't form a closed surface.
Do you understand what a "closed surface" means ?
That red line forms a closed loop for which Ampere's law is applicable.

@2017 if we're talking about a solenoid, it's a helix so the loop isn't closed

@JohnRennie I thought he meant a circle....(yeah, maybe he is talking about your interpretation)

8:19 AM
@2017 so closed surface(for which gauss's law is applicable) should be 3d and like sphere, cylinder or something like that?
@JohnRennie why? if solenoid is closely wound(?)

@ramsay Is that red line a circle or a helical loop as JR says?
@ramsay Right

@ramsay closely wound is still not a closed loop

@2017 helical loop. and I am considering it a closed loop

@ramsay That's not possible....

@2017 but why is it because of the small gaps?

8:23 AM
If by that you mean a closed loop having the shape of one complete turn of the wire of the helix maybe that would make sense. But remember that the wires don't form a closed loop.
This is what a helix looks like in reality ^

oh I see!
actually I confused a plane with a surface so I was wondering if flux passes through plane(which I thought for surface) then gauss's law tells flux should be zero but ampere's law tells it is not. So thanks @2017

:-)

8:40 AM
@JohnRennie I have a question (probably silly :-P) about gaseous phase reactions. In a reaction like 2A(g) + 3B(g) ----> C(g) do we take the number of moles of each reactant or product to be directly proportional to their partial pressure or their volume ? I see some problems taking it directly proportional to partial pressure while some problems taking it directly proportional to their volume...

is Quantum Computing a branch of physics or independent?
28
Quantum Computing

Proposed Q&A site for computer Professionals, Quantum-Computing, Quantum Software Programmers, Quantum Data Center Architects, and Quantum Computing Engineers.

Currently in definition.

The concentration is the number of moles per cubic metre. Assuming the gases can be treated as ideal this is porportional to the partial pressure.

@JohnRennie Gay-Lussac's law seems to say that the gases react in ratio of their volumes....
"The ratio between the volumes of the reactant gases and the gaseous products can be expressed in simple whole numbers."
"2 volumes of hydrogen + 1 volume of oxygen = 2 volumes of gaseous water"
"2 molecules of hydrogen + 1 molecule of oxygen = 2 molecules of water."
Umm, doesn't "number of moles per cubic metre" depend on the volume of the gas?

@2017 Ah, oops, you asked about the number of moles not the concentration.

yes ^

8:53 AM
yes, assuming an ideal gas the number of moles is proportional to the volume because 1 mole of an ideal gas = 22.4 litres

I think it can be said to be proportional to partial pressure also, as in a container having more than one gases each gas can be said to have taken up the whole volume of the container.
I guess it depends on how we think about it
It can either be said to be proportional to the isolated volume at the same pressure. Or it can be said to proportional to partial pressure when they are mixed together with other gases (since it will take up the whole volume).
This is really confusing :-P
@JohnRennie I think I got it now, either we use $$P_{total}V_{partial}=nRT$$ or $$P_{partial}V_{total}=nRT$$ where $$P_{total}V_{partial}=P_{partial}V_{total}$$. So the correct phrasing would be number of moles is proportional to the partial volume OR the partial pressure :-)

The partial volume is the total volume times the partial pressure (divided by the total pressure)

@JohnRennie That's what I wrote ^
$$P_{total}V_{partial}=P_{partial}V_{total}$$

So the number of moles is proportional to the partial pressure only if the volume and total pressure is constant.

@JohnRennie Right!
I suppose I understood it.
Thanks

9:08 AM
hi

user228700
Hi, everyone :-)

Morning

user228700
Holi hai! :-)

@Kaumudi.H Hindi equivalent of "Merry Holi" ?

user228700
9:14 AM
No, not really; it literally translates to "It's Holi", which is s'thing that people exclaim while showering others with colored powder/dancing etc.

user228700
@JohnRennie That would be "Holi mubarak" :-)

Aha. The UK equivalent is "Oh my God it's Monday morning", said while desperately making another cup of coffee :-)

user228700
Lol :-P Same here, really--it's gray and dull here in Chennai. The festivities happen only in Northern states.

It's a beautiful sunny morning here in Chester. Later on today I shall cycle round Chester to (a) enjoy the sunshine and (b) scout for food.

user228700
Sigh. I haven't celebrated Holi in over 3 years now :'-(

9:20 AM
I managed to put on 2kg while staying at my Mum's - not too bad.

user228700
@JohnRennie That sounds absolutely lovely :-) BTW, my mom's not getting me that kindle.

user228700
@JohnRennie You're a skinny dude, I bet u can handle an extra 2 pounds elegantly enough :-P

2 kg not 2 pounds :-)
I'll shed the excess in the next month or so, just in time to go back to my Mum's for Easter!
What was the problem with the Kindle?

user228700
@JohnRennie Right :-) Even better, then.

user228700
Oh, well, she was looking to buy me Kindle Basic and according to tons of reviews, it stops working in about a year.

9:25 AM
Kindle is old fashioned anyway :-P
Better buy an ipad

user228700
...there aren't service centers here and the standard response to this is "Buy another one, we'll give u 20% off"

user228700
@2017 Don't need a tablet.

@Kaumudi.H So you wanted to use the Kindle only to read books?

user228700
@2017 Yep.

I see. I read books once in a blue moon so probably I'll never buy a kindle.

user228700
9:27 AM
So now I'm trying to convince her to get me this:

user228700
@2017 I see. On the other hand, I'm an avid reader, u see.

@Kaumudi.H That's nostalgic :')

user228700
It's my absolute favorite comic strip of all time <3

I used to read Calvin and Hobbes in newspapers
Rs. 4000 is a bit overpriced perhaps!

user228700
9:30 AM
Same here. Last summer tho, I read a book:

@Kaumudi.H I might know someone who has the complete C&H as PDFs (allegedly)

user228700
@2017 Nah. They're of excellent quality.

user228700
@JohnRennie And I might know who that "someone" is :-) I want to read them on paper tho.

My niece also has a thing about wanting the physical books to read. I just don't get it - a die hard nerd I guess.

user228700
9:36 AM
And I'd like to keep rereading them as well. There is s'thing to paper and usually, I'm with John Green on this one--"I don't care how you read, I only care if you do" but the feeling of paper in hand and the musty smell of the book, that's undeniably beautiful.

user228700
...and with C&H, I'd like to have that. I'd also like to bookmark certain strips, etc.

@JohnRennie high fives, me too :-D I have very few physical books. I'd rather spend the extra money on buying ice cream!

user228700
And sometimes, I carry it around with me everywhere I go, if I really fall in love with the book and I have a strong suspicion that this will be the case with C&H :-)

Well, so according to statistics women tend to prefer physical books over ebooks ^ :D My sister has similar habits as you ^

user228700
I see :-) What statistics?

9:41 AM
@Kaumudi.H Based on data collected by me :P

user228700
@2017 The soft-copies aren't free, ya know. Sometimes, they cost even more than the paperback.

@Kaumudi.H Mostly they cost less...

user228700
@2017 Sure, yeah, that counts :-P

user228700
@2017 Not significantly less tho. I dunno, u could buy just one ice-cream with that money, I suppose.

@Kaumudi.H True, but I can also carry them all with me whenever I travel.

user228700
9:48 AM
Yeah, no, there's no denying the portability.

user228700
...which is why I wanted the Kindle but oh well.

@Kaumudi.H I have stacks, literally stacks, of old Android tablets ...

user228700
@JohnRennie This again? :-) Thanks but I really don't need a tablet.

You need an e-reader

user228700
Maybe I'll save up enough money to buy the better version of Kindle someday and until then, I'm happy to visit the friendly old library from time time :-)

9:51 AM
And tablets make good e-readers

user228700
I...know. But what else would I use it for?

Why do you need to use it for anything else?
I use my tablet (a high end Nexus, natch :-) primarily as an e-reader
In fact, apart from occasional excursions onto Google (to check something I read in a book) I only use it as an e-reader

user228700
I see.

That's apart from the tablet in the car that I use as a satnav and the tablet on my bedside table that I use as a clock radio :-)

user228700
The idea of having a tablet just for this doesn't really sit well with me...

user228700
9:55 AM
@JohnRennie U're kidding, right? O_o

user228700
Also, it's almost 4 and I haven't had lunch yet so I'm positively starving. Brb :-)

@Kaumudi.H use the knowledge about me that you've accumulated. Do you really think I'm kidding? :-)

tbh even I use my samsung tablet only as an alarm clock :-P (it has very loud alarm)

user228700
10:19 AM
@JohnRennie I...don't. Wow. Man, is nobody sane anymore? :-p

@Kaumudi.H sanity is all very well if you're one of the clinically sane. The rest of us find it a bit dull.

user228700
@JohnRennie :-)

@JohnRennie, hello

@LeonhardEuler Morning

10:30 AM
@JohnRennie, do you have any idea about the question I have posted?

@LeonhardEuler what's a dcm? One tenth of a metre?

@JohnRennie Decameters I suppose...
1 Decametres (dcm) = 10 m
Or maybe decimeter
We used dcm for decameter in school
@LeonhardEuler Do you use dcm for decameter or decimeter ?

11:06 AM
@JohnRennie, @2017, with what does the answer match?

@LeonhardEuler Sorry, I don't have time to do the calculations...
You should do it yourself
It will either be decimeter or decameter

@2017, could you please show me the relationship between centrimeter and decimeter Nd decameter?

11:57 AM
Protip: When I am frustrated, I do maths

@Secret Have you heard the word of our lord and saviour Death Grips?

Not really I guess. Is he a heavy metal guy?

@Secret It's more like noise rap
with more noise

@BernardoMeurer Well, the melody and voice is clear to me, but I see or feel nothing about the music. Guess its a sign that it is not my cup of tea?

@Secret Perhaps, the fact that you don't absolutely hate it at first is already surprising though :P
They have some more accessible things too, like this

12:06 PM
Well, low quality heavy metal is pure noise compared to this one. This one I can at least hear the melody

To truly appreciate that one you need to try and sing that first verse as fast as he does
Get get get get
Got got got got
Blood rush to my
Head lit hot lock
Poppin’ off the
Fuckin’ block knot
Clockin’ wrist slit
Watch bent thought bot
Try it

Lol, that sounds better when played at 2x the speed
At 1x, the guitar like instruement in the middle is a bit noisy

I want to see you read that at 2x speed lol

Here's some really triply stuff from the maths chat

What the hell lol

12:13 PM
@BernardoMeurer Uh, how you are supposed to hear me read when all you can hear are words in this chat?

@Secret Eh, call me

The music Aleph 0 is weird, it seemed like a random jumble of fragments pieced together
some parts sounds lively, and then it gets distorted in the middle
it's as if reality is falling apart

It's kind of cool actually
I've been more and more into "noisy" stuff lately

noisy is good

Me and my friend almost had to go to the hospital because of this track

12:23 PM
What did you have to go to the hospital for?

dear god, @BernardoMeurer. i thought it would be something aggressive and psychedelic but it's far worse

We got excited, he punched a wall and broke his fist
@BalarkaSen That's what I listen going to uni, lol
"Analysis II here I come!"

lol

That remaster sucks though, they messed with the dynamic range. The original mix is much more aggressive

holy hell this is great man

12:28 PM
YES
@0celo7 I told you people can like Death Grips!

experimental jungle, that sounds like the deal

I leave you guys with my perhaps favourite track
Starts with the charles manson deposition
Gotta head to class, be back in an hour

Thanks for sharing.
Cya.

12:30 PM
See ya folks

Charles Manson is classic stuff pal.

@BernardoMeurer 35:23 onewards sounds good, I like that distorted dark hallway atmosphere. Parts of it in the beginning sounds very noisy like those low quality heavy metal where I heard no melody

re: helter skeltor

@Bernardo Not bad. Not bad at all.

The original sounds like a rock band, it lacked that weirdness

12:40 PM
In the months leading up to the Tate/LaBianca murders in August 1969, Charles Manson often spoke to the members of his "Family" about Helter Skelter, an apocalyptic war arising from racial tensions between blacks and whites. This "chimerical vision"—as it was termed by the court that heard Manson's appeal from his conviction for the killings—involved reference to music of the Beatles (particularly songs from their 1968 double album The Beatles, also known as "the White Album") and to the New Testament's Book of Revelation. Manson and his followers were convicted of the murders based on the ...
That^ and the reference to The Beatles is what really put Manson on the map @BernardoMeurer

@BernardoMeurer You should listen to this. 0celo didn't like the previous album but I think that's your sort of thing.

Bowie was the king of edgy stuff.

Haha

or at least one of the crown princesses :-)

He's got stuff which are not as avant garde as his last and first few albums has been tho

12:49 PM
@dmckee Have you noticed the new moderator/gold badge holder power that allows you to add more duplicates to the close banner after the question is closed? That sounds like a perfect use case for that

Talking about Princesses, @BalarkaSen have you read Machiavelli's Prince?

Ugh death grips
