@ACuriousMind : In case you weren't posing a rhetorical question: I guess the poor rendering in the review queue is at least partly to blame.

3:26 PM
This is pretty cool:
anybody care to venture what that white spot is?

3:37 PM
@JohnRennie I can't stop playing with the remote volume control
the knob spins by itself!

@Kaumudi.H Hi Kaumudi. I'm back if it isn't too late.
@BernardoMeurer It's cool isn't it :-)
Did get a chance to test all the inputs?

@JohnRennie All but Phono, yes
all working :)

Great! :-) I could have sworn some had corroded, but if they're all working that's great.

user228700
@JohnRennie Hmm? No, I don't have a question :-)

@Kaumudi.H Hi. You pinged me earlier?

user228700
3:41 PM
You see, this:

user228700
2 hours ago, by Kaumudi. H
Arre, @JohnR: U're still around?

user228700
Is an expression of surprise.

user228700
"Oh, u haven't left (for lunch, presumably) yet!"

@JohnRennie What are the source switch buttons on the remote for? I don't think that hard clicking selector knob will turn by itself

@Kaumudi.H I left my PC on. It must have left me logged in. I have in fact just got back and am tucking into some apples.

user228700
3:43 PM
Oh, nice :-) I don't like apples.

Apples are the best fruit

user228700
Nah, that would be bananas.

@BernardoMeurer Those are for if you have a Marantz CD, DVD etc. The remote will control all the Marantz stuff. As you say, it won't turn the selector knob :-)

Q: How many massage minutes is equivalent to a slap on the back of the neck?

CapitanNeptuneI'm talking with a girl and she said that she will lovingly slap me. So I decided to change my luck. Friction, momentum, temperature, inertia... I have tried to do the math but it has been too long since I do not do physics, and every time more variables appear. There is a way to (approximately...

@JohnRennie Ah! That makes sense :)

The above experiment would be fun :-)

3:46 PM
@JohnRennie I can test it later today

@BernardoMeurer too much information!!

@BernardoMeurer you like the sound of the Marantz then?

@BernardoMeurer Mangoes are the best :D

@JohnRennie I really do. It's a bit overpowered on the low end but I love how detailed it is. Listening to The Black Keys' Weight of Love (Which if you haven't yet heard I recommend you do RIGHT NOW, I have the FLAC if you want) I could hear detail I had never noticed before.
I really enjoy the sound though, it's a great amp. Can't wait to hear it with speakers

3:55 PM
@JohnRennie What the hell is that :P Someone even upvoted it ?

@anonymous Shrug :-)

It seems similar to photoelectric effect
No matter how many photons hit the metal unless it is high frequency electron won't come out :P

@BernardoMeurer the sound is probably a bit coloured compared to the top end amps like the Naims, but that makes ir really good for rock. Naims can be a bit too clinical for rock music.
What Black Keys album is that? I've got a fair few of their albums...

@JohnRennie Turn Blue, the latest

@Qmechanic I guess so, I'm still a bit curious what the reviewers thought they had approved.

3:58 PM
Ah I don't have that one. I shall pay Amazon a visit.

@JohnRennie It's as good as Brothers

> I have tried to do the math but it has been too long since I do not do physics, and every time more variables appear.
Welcome to relationships, I guess :)

@JohnRennie Putting it on the GDrive folder. Do you still have a link to that?

It might actually be an interesting question if framed correctly. I feel that no matter how many loving slaps (pats) you receive per minute it won't equal the effect of one tight slap :D

@BernardoMeurer I've got a link, but it's only showing four tracks ...

4:05 PM
@JohnRennie Ongoing upload :P
7/12 uploaded

Cool, I'll wait :-)

@JohnRennie Done
It's in ALAC :P

@BernardoMeurer Got it, thanks!

@JohnRennie Awesome, any time!

vzn
@Jim thx for sharing, sounds interesting & worthy of further comment/ discussion, hope to hear updates from you, maybe youd like to spotlight it sometime, encourage/ invite you to do so. meta.physics.stackexchange.com/questions/7783/… ... (& by your timing looks like youll miss the return of your friend 0----7)

4:19 PM
@BernardoMeurer Any time you want obscure prog rock that no-one has heard of let me know :-)

@JohnRennie Like what? :P
@JohnRennie Have you owned NAD gear?

I was trying to think what the silliest name was. Probably Mr. Quimby's Beard ...
@BernardoMeurer yes I had a NAD 3020 back in the early 80s.
There's a current NAD amp that gets good reviews.

HAD to be on bandcamp with that name :P
@JohnRennie I just see people talking about NAD very often but don't know much about them

Does quim mean the same in Portugese as it does in English?

I do not know what "quim" is in neither english or portuguese

4:28 PM
Female anatomy - below the navel and above the knees - at the front
Hence the beard in the band name :-)

Ha
Hahahahaha
That's a great name

I'm not sure about great but it always causes a laugh :-)
Actually I'm not sure I would recommend Mr. Quimby's Beard as apart from the name they aren't actually all that good :-)

I never got too much into prog rock

Have you heard of the Cooper Temple Clause?

Never heard of them

4:36 PM
Their first album is really good. Kind of a of rockier Muse/Radiohead vibe.
The second album is prettuy much the same as their first, then they ran out ideas and the third album is rubbish.

I've been told that I have a personality disorder because i love radiohead and hate muse :P
lol, that seems to happen all too often

Which Muse albums have you heard, because they have changed a lot over the years. Origin of Symmetry is like early Radiohead and very good.
In fact I might just cue up Origin of Symmetry now ...

have you guys listened to Yanni?

@JohnRennie I no longer remember, I guess I should give them another try
Radiohead's new album is great

@BernardoMeurer you could try progressive rock/metal ... I love these genres

4:40 PM
To be honest itseems to me Radiohead maxed out with OK Computer and have never regained those heights.

@JohnRennie OK Computer is not my favourite album, I prefer In Rainbows
I think it's just that after OK Computer they were no longer a Rock band
OK Computer was their last Rock album

@DHMO You there? Need some help in chem!

@anonymous go ahead

Ok so I know the formal charges on each of these 3 structures
But how do I understand which atom will contain the lone pair of electron ?

certainly not N

4:49 PM
BTW where does the 5 th electron of N vanish ?
Is it shifted to another atom?

the nitrogen has a formal positive charge
and you don't really care where exactly that electron went to

@DHMO Umm, but suppose in coordination chemistry when we treat CNO- as a ligand how do we know which atom will donate its lone pair or rather which atom will attack the central metal?
Both C and O have got extra electrons
Obviously both ends can't attack at the same time

@anonymous why not?

@DHMO What "why not" ?
The nomenclature depends on the end of the ligand which is attached to the central metal
Like cyanato-O or cyanato-N
How can both ends attack together?

I mean, both ends can attack
maybe not together
@anonymous they can attack together... there's something called bridging ligand

4:59 PM
@DHMO Is there any ion like SNC- ?
@DHMO No, that is SCN- not SNC-

@anonymous why is "isocyanato" OCN?

Ahaaaaaaaa!!!!! I got it
Fulminates are chemical compounds which include the fulminate ion. The fulminate ion, CNO− is a pseudohalic ion, acting like a halogen with its charge and reactivity. Due to the instability of the ion, fulminate salts are friction-sensitive explosives. The best known is mercury(II) fulminate, which has been used as a primary explosive in detonators. Fulminates can be formed from metals, such as silver and mercury, dissolved in nitric acid and reacted with ethanol. It is largely the presence of the weak single nitrogen-oxygen bond which leads to its instability. Nitrogen very easily forms a stable...
Isocyanate is the functional group with the formula R–N=C=O. Organic compounds that contain an isocyanate group are referred to as isocyanates. An isocyanate that has two isocyanate groups is known as a di-isocyanate. Di-isocyanates are manufactured for reactions with polyols in the production of polyurethanes, a class of polymers. Isocyanates should not be confused with cyanate esters and isocyanides, whose behaviors are very different. The cyanate (cyanate ester) functional group (R–O–C≡N) is arranged differently than the isocyanate group (R–N=C=O). Isocyanides have the connectivity R-N≡C, lacking...

eh, congratulations?

@DHMO Isocyanate ion is always OCN which attacks from N side but fulminate ion is ONC is different
So basically either end of ligand can attack the central metal but depending on the side which attacks we name it differently

@anonymous sure

5:07 PM
But shouldn't this be the fulminate ion rather than isocyanate i.stack.imgur.com/8gaS2.jpg ?

@anonymous agreed

The internet is a confusing place :/

@anonymous this is interesting

Yeah! Bridge ligands :) With 0 oxidation state
So summing up: We have 6 similar ions 1)cyanate (OCN) 2)isocyanate (NCO) 3)fulminate (ONC) 4)isofulminate(CNO) 5)thiocyanate(SCN) 6)isothiocyanate (NCS)

which leaves open the question wtf is SNC

5:14 PM
@DHMO Thiofulminate? Does it exist ?

user228700
@JohnR: The Mountain Goats?

@anonymous lmao

hahhahahahhahah XD
same time :P

5:16 PM
yes, down to 9 close votes in the queue for me
::waits for the day to roll over::

user228700
Oh, hey @heather :-)

@Kaumudi.H I heard of The Mountain Goats but I've never heard anything by them.

@Kaumudi.H hello =)

Are they a favourite of yours?

user228700
@JohnRennie Somewhat--especially the album "Sunset tree"

user228700
5:17 PM
Listen to these:

user228700
^ These are among my favorites.

@BernardoMeurer Do it.

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek!
Folk music!

user228700
5:18 PM
... :-P

My brain, it's ... EXPLODING aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrghhh (BANG!)

user228700
Oh, come on.

:-)
I'm not a fan of any folk music. Not British folk music and not American folk music.
Basically I like my music to be electronic and weird, though heavy is good too.

user228700
Generally, neither am I but The Mountain Goats are an exception.

Of course heavy, electronic and weird is just the job. Did someone mention Tool? :-)

user228700
5:21 PM
...I didn't get that :-|

user228700
Oh, @DanielS: Greetings! :-)

Psychedelic stuff are the best

Young the Giant is good.

user228700
@JohnRennie I get tired of rock sometimes.

5:24 PM
Listen to death metal.

Anything in prog is good.. @JohnRennie youve listened to Opeth?

user228700
@BalarkaSen ...not now :-P

@BalarkaSen \m/

Only the true lovers of weird music like Captain Beefheart.

user228700
5:25 PM
@JohnR: BTW, don't u like any songs by Coldplay?

@Oswald I quite like the three albums Steven Wilson helped with.

@JohnRennie ahh nice.. Steven Wilson is a genius

@Kaumudi.H I'm not a big fan; was joking

@Kaumudi.H I like the Coldplay singles when I hear them on the radio. But if I'm going to sit down and really listen to an album there would be lots of bands ahead of Coldplay in the queue.

user228700
...OK :-P

5:26 PM
also Dream theater, Haken are good for proggers

That isn't meant to be a criticism of Coldplay, they just aren't really my thing.

user228700
@JohnRennie Sure, OK. I'd recommend these from when they used to be a rock band...sort of:

user228700

user228700
...the thumbnail of the second vid. doesn't have anything to do with the song.

5:29 PM
@Kaumudi.H I'm from India too :)

user228700
@Oswald Erm, nice, hi :-)

Its been a long time since I heard I heard a happy song (something that is fun to listen). Most songs nowadays seem too gloomy and philosophical :P

@Kaumudi.H Hello..

Any suggestions ? Anybody :D

@DanielSank, if you've got time today I'd love to discuss the question I posted about the vibrating beams with you.

5:31 PM
@anonymous prog songs are mostly about life and stuff

user228700
@anonymous Dyou mind if the song is classified as "kiddish", sometimes?

@Kaumudi.H Not at all
Feel free to suggest

@anonymous Amerika, by Young the Giant? Dunno if it qualifies as happy or sad, but i think it's pretty good.

@heather Okay..trying it rightaway
@Kaumudi.H Thanks
Im listening

user228700
5:33 PM
@anonymous I'm not done :-P Dyou like Hindi songs?

@ACuriousMind regarding this, isn't it always just an object whose relevant property only depend on the homotopy class of a map $X\to Y$ (typically between smooth manifolds)?

@Kaumudi.H I love Hindi songs :)

user228700
@anonymous Love? You may listened to this already, in that case:

This is certainly broad enough to encompass all the "topological charges" and whatnot that I've seen.

5:35 PM
@Kaumudi.H Yesssshhh! I was just now going to tell you that :D That is one of my favourites :)

user228700
:-) Same here.

user228700
This one...not that much :-P

Anyone into classical btw? Indian or western?

user228700
@Oswald ...sort of. Indian. I listen to really old Hindi music sometimes.

user228700
^ Example :-P

@Kaumudi.H I like old ones too.. Mohd Rafi, Kishore kumar etc

user228700
Yep, same here.

@Danu Eh, it's not as simple as that. E.g. a BPST instanton is a "topological object" (it has winding number 1) but it has "relevant properties" like its center and its radius which are not classified by such maps.

@heather youtube.com/watch?v=8P1utNegyt4 Was indeed nice but I couldn't follow some of the lyrics
Thanks

5:40 PM
@ACuriousMind Yeah, but the reason it's called topological is exactly because of what I said, no?

user228700
Off to bed. Bye, guys :-)

Of course it may well have some other properties

Bye,,

But that's not what makes it topological

Oh @Kaumudi.H I liked this one too youtube.com/watch?v=m2a3WlRyWGM :) Goodnight !

5:41 PM
@Danu Sure...it's called topological because it has a property that's a topological/homotopical invariant, but that's basically what my comment said ("an object classified by some sort of topological invariant")

user228700
@anonymous Yeah, that one's nice :-)

@ACuriousMind But not just any topological invariant. Always a homotopy class of maps.
(in particular, physicists have decided that "cohomology" does not count as "topology", only "homotopy" does :P)
Isn't that right?

@Danu Yeah, physicists are a bit confused about the distinction between "homotopical" and "topological" invariant :P

That seems a pretty concise definition, in any case.

I.e. what they call "topological" indeed usually pertains to homotopies

5:43 PM
The stupidest thing, of course, is that cohomology is also a homotopy invariant :D

@Danu But...it's not really a definition. You can't write down the class of "topological objects" with this. Topological objects are like porn: The physicst recognizes them when they see them.

But it's really only homotopy classes of maps that I've seen being called "topological" by physicists.
@ACuriousMind No, you definitely can. Give me a (field) theory on a manifold $X$ with some field taking values in $Y$. Then, if there are any topological objects, they are just given by $[X,Y]$, no?

@Danu No

These stars btw
A bit annoying
@ACuriousMind OK, sorry you're right.
Of course it's more complicated

What $X$ and $Y$ are varies considerably

5:45 PM
Boundary sphere of the spacetime n shit like that
But still just narrowing it down to $[X,Y]$ for some mysteriously related $X,Y$, where $X$ is related to the domain and $Y$ to the target space, is already some progress.
Or in any case an improvement over the current answers.
They are terrible, honestly.

I...didn't read them yet

Diracology gets closest

Diracology's answer isn't terrible, that is what many physicists in fact mean by "topological object".

Anyone mind if destar all the music videos?

Please do

5:52 PM
I just unstarred them!

I don't think they are an asset to the star board.

Whoever starred them again, please don't flood the starboard with a single conversation, and in particular not with a bunch of samey-looking links

Death to all music videos!
No, don't star that! :-)
That just replaces starred music videos with complaints about starred music videos :-)

Please do not recurse :P

But it's OK to curse the first time?

5:56 PM
::waits for Bernardo to mention Ackermann::
i probably misspelled that.

Looks fine to me
