hello.
This excellent question deserves an excellent answer.

Q: Unitary evolution even after tracing out degrees of freedom

user2640461In quantum mechanics it is usually the case that when degrees of freedom in a system are traced out (i.e. ignored), the evolution of the remaining system is no longer unitary and this is formally described as the entropy of the reduced density matrix ($S = Tr(\rho\ln{\rho}$)) attaining a nonzero ...

04:48
Should I watch star wars?
@SirCumference Why do you ask, Monsieur?
=P
@SwapnilDas Well because of stuff like this
This summarizes my life
Rofl.
I don't face such problems, luckily.
Lucky :P
Hehe. I rarely interact with classmates.
04:53
Though I worry that I'll be terrified by the astronomical inaccuracies
So never watch. You'll get nightmares ;P
@DanielSank I, too, have a high school teacher I kept in touch with. She argued the administration into letting five of us take a second semester of computer programing (basically a intro data structure and algorithms course) if she could teach it in parallel with one of her normal courses.
rob
rob
@SirCumference After many years as a snob, I've decided that ignorance of pop-culture stuff is no more a point of pride than ignorance about anything else.
She basically just set us loose to 'do the problems in chapter [N]` every two weeks and discussed our problems whenever no one else needed her.
@rob Well things like Harry Potter were worth reading
Not sure if Star Wars will be worth the time, though, since it's loaded with astronomical inaccuracies
Those things make me cringe
rob
rob
05:05
@SirCumference Harry Potter is a remarkable three-thousand-page novel published in seven volumes
... which is also loaded with astronomical inaccuracies. ("Did you know that Jupiter's moon Europa is covered with mice?")
@rob I wouldn't say "loaded", I can only think of two or three cases
The other 2,997 pages were worth it
rob
rob
@SirCumference Well, there are plenty of other foundation flaws in Harry Potter. Such as: magic
But it's not a story that you read to learn about how the world works. It's a story you read to learn about how people work.
@rob I suppose you have a point
@rob Au contraire, there was a ton of worldbuilding
Oh, did you mean the real world?
rob
rob
If you have an educational bent, then you're going to encounter students who became interested in the sciences because of science fiction --- including Star Wars.
rob
rob
05:12
And if your response to those students is "I always ignored Star Wars because of technical inaccuracies," you'll probably lose the sale.
But if you can appreciate a good story, and perhaps take some inspiration from the fanciful stuff, then you could steer a creative and imaginative person into a productive career improving our world.
And all for twelve dollars at the cineplex. Seems like a bargain to me.
@rob You sound like an engineer :O
rob
rob
@SirCumference I'm not, but I have a lot of respect for good creative engineers.
@dmckee It's interesting how often successful scientists have stories like that.
Oh also, please click the "Dan gets a hat link" in the star board.
I'm not 100% sure it works, but it might.

Ello, everyone :-)
@Kaumudi.H: I mentioned The Gatekeepers to my niece and it turns out she's already a big fan. She's read the first four books and has the fifth one to read next.
user228700
Oh, nice! The fifth one is my favorite! If my memory serves me correctly, it is the last book and it's called Oblivion.
Have you read Horowitz's other books?
user228700
No, just these 5, I'm afraid. Shortly after I finished Oblivion, I took a long (and ongoing) hiatus from obsessive reading...
user228700
Does she recommend the Alex Rider series? (To an almost 18 year-old)
06:34
She started out with the Alex Rider books and loved them. However she now says they're a bit childish.
user228700
Oh, okay. I'll maybe pass, then...
Since she's 15 I'd guess they'd be much too YA for you.
user228700
Hmm, on the contrary, do you know that YA is often described as best suited for ages 16-21? I don't think our definitions of YA matches :-)
Possibly, but books vary a lot. e.g. the Harry Potter books are great for 55 year olds :-)
user228700
The Harry Potter books are great for humans at all stages of life. Period.
user228700
06:36
Anyhoo, I ate a chocolate pizza last night...
The Hunger Games books are actually pretty adult as well. But I gather (I haven't read them) the Alex Rider books really are targetted at say 12 year olds.
Oh yes!
How was the chocolate pizza?
user228700
@JohnRennie Ah, I see. Yes, THG are kind of adult-y...
user228700
To put it as lightly as I possibly can (/this chat room's decorum allows), the chocolate pizza tasted like CRAP.
Ah, that's a shame
user228700
Hmm, let me try to find an image...
06:38
@Kaumudi.H Not of you throwing up I hope :-)
user228700
:-) No. I was unable to find anything that remotely resembled what they actually served but it was basically melted chocolate, nougat and some pieces of brownie on a tortilla base.
That sounds ... quite nice :-)
user228700
I hadn't anticipated the tortilla and it made it worse. It was the worst type of pizza that I have tasted so far. That's 200 rupees that I'll never get back and arfhg, I could've just bought two Choco Lava cakes for that much money, which sounds less delicious and filling than a whole pizza but considering the fact that I threw away one piece...
Would it have been better on a bread base?
Like a deep pan I mean?
user228700
Yes, I feel that it would've been better on a bread base, which is what I thought I was getting but tortilla made it so much worse.
user228700
I wouldn't go so far as to proclaim that all types of chocolate pizzas are bad just yet. I kind of hate nougat, which, I think, was the main problem...it was nauseating.
user228700
@JohnRennie Yep yep yep! :-)
Ah. I must admit I like nougat. Well I like nougat bars - I'm not so sure about using it in cakes.
user228700
*Pizzas
Well yes, it said pizza but really it was a sort of cake
user228700
06:47
I'm still not very sure if it was certainly the nougat. It was...fibery. (::Shivers in disgust::)
I get the impression that Indian cooking doesn't use self raising flour much. Is that a fair impression?
user228700
@JohnRennie On tortillas?
user228700
@JohnRennie I'm inclined to agree.
An unleavened cake :-)
user228700
Indians don't really bake...at all. (Except when we're baking, of course)
06:49
Cakes in the UK invariably means something cooked with self raising flour to give a sponge texture.
user228700
Whoa, no, "sponge texture" is okay! This one was fibery. Bleh.
That does sound odd. I wonder what they had used.
user228700
It was white and also tasted of vanilla.
Oh well. Whatever doesn't kill you makes you ... erm ... vomit? :-)
user228700
No, I'm like Ted Mosby from HIMYM. Vomit-free since...oh, crap, I was sick last month. Dang it.
06:55
Good morning
user228700
G'morning, koolman :-)

Afternoon.

Why are some people think the EM spectrum is a spatial dimension or something?

What were Einsteins contributions to physics after 1915?
09:46
How games usually treat alchemy:
$$\exists \textrm{universal resource (a wildcard resource)} u$$
given some homogeneous process $g: \textrm{wildcard} \rightarrow \textrm{desired item} x$, $g(u)=x$ and $g(au)=ax$ $\forall a \in \mathbb{R}$

Ah, @Secret, you never fail to make me laugh
12:47
Hi Accidental Fourier
Hi @Secret
@ACuriousMind can I ask you something
is there an age limit for moderators on stack exchange?
@Kenshin good afternoon
@Kenshin no, I don't think so
Do you think there should be?
@Kenshin None. I think there have been 15 year old moderators that got elected.
@ACuriousMind I ask because what if a young moderator has to rewview potentially inappropriate material
IIRC HDE 226868 is young
12:50
e.g. on my site physics.qandaexchange a user (S007) has posted rude 18+images and because the user is new, his posts required moderation before the posts appear on the site
I have reviewed and deleted the message
but I wonder given this possibility if moderatrors should all be 18+
@Kenshin They then will either review it or delegate that task to someone else.
but they can't un see what they've seen
once they realize the image is inappropriate for them, it's too late
@Kenshin They could equally well see the content by just happening to look at it when it gets posted.
no
mabye on SE yes
on my site new users with low rep need content approved by moderators
before it appears on the main site
I guess that when someones volunteers to be a moderator, they have to accept that they might stumble upon some inappropriate content sometimes
12:54
@Kenshin Yes, on SE, this is the case - there is no content that gets held in limbo before it's reviewed, everything is posted immediately and then reviewed as needed. (However, SE has some very good automatic spam filters, I'm told)
@heather if you have any emails from physics.qandaexchange in the last few hours please delete them and don't look at them
@heather, S007 had returned to the site and posted inappropriate images for review that I've deleted
@heather these images aren't appropriate for users under 18. What is your opinion on potentially viewing 18+ content requiring deletion?
@ACuriousMind thanks for the help, I'll see what heathers opinion is too and if she's happy to remain a mod
Also, what AFT said - if you're not able to deal with inappropriate content, then don't become a moderator. But I have no general concerns that 14-18 year old might not be able to handle "inappropriate" images. This is the internet, there's thousands of "inappropriate" images, texts, videos and whatnot just a mouse click away.
I just had to flag some gay porn spam on another SE site yesterday.
@AccidentalFourierTransform lol
I edited :P
12:57
@Buzz r u young?
@AccidentalFourierTransform did you like?
Typing Q before FT seems to be muscle memory for me, I guess
@Kenshin lol, I was talking about ACM's comment
12:58
No, hah. But I could have been.
yeah do you think there should be an age limit Buzz?
can a user under 18 really consent to viewing 18+ content?
perhaps one for legal stack exchange
in Zero term algebra, 24 mins ago, by Secret
(Revised) Corollary 3.2: Zero inverse are permutations in finite structures: Given an associative division by zero algebra $S$ with an underlying set of cardinality $n \in \mathbb{N}$. If there is a left (right) zero inverse $c$ and left (right) identity $1$, then the semigroup action of $c$ on $S$ is a permutation.
in Zero term algebra, 48 secs ago, by Secret
Proof: Let $0a=b$ be a left zero term. By Corollary 3.1, $0a$ is unique for some $a \in S$ (That is, the left semigroup action of $0$ on $a$ is injective).
Multiply both sides by $c$ to get $c0a=cb$. Using the left identity $a=cb$, which is also unique since $c$ is the left inverse of $0$. Hence the semigroup action of $c$ on $b$ is injective. It remains to prove that $c$ is surjective. Since $S$ is a semigroup, $(0a)1=0a \in S$ for all $a\in S$. Thus $0a$ exists for all $a \in S$. Now if $0$ is not surjective, then there exists $U \supseteq S$, that is the codomain of $0$. This is impossib
First part of the third division by zero no go theorem
After seeing that, I think an age limit would not be inappropriate. I had a talk with my wife (a mod on several other SE sites) about how frequent porn spam was. (She said she's never seen it as a mod, actally.)
It's past 11 pm here. Sydney would already be in the new year, and adelaide is next (at 17 minutes away)

@Kenshin Hello Kenshin
mother does not like me wandering around too late at night.
ok fair enuf
specially since she is very old
how old

There's a hat for getting a starred chat within \pm twelve hours of New Year's UTC.
she was born 7 years into this century
i know
this century?
UTC new year is 10 am here.
Oh 1920-2040
so she was born in 2007
@Buzz Well SE has this unique New Year gift ... Thanks for reminding ...
13:19
1920+7 is 1927
2007 was a good year.
@Kenshin therefore, she cannot be a moderator here
y not
@Buzz what happene din 2007?
This year is in base 12, 1,2,0,0. A turn of that century
@Kenshin shes underage
13:20
BTW Is there an upper age limit for being a SE moderator?
I had a kid that year too. I wouldn't want my nine-year-old moderating anything though.
or a gross year
@AccidentalFourierTransform there is no age limit
@SchrodingersCat being dead.
@AccidentalFourierTransform and we're talking about wendy's mum, luckily wendy's mum isn't applying to be a mod
13:21
@AccidentalFourierTransform Well I am half dead , half alive ... What about me??
Honestly, I wouldn't want my older kid moderating anything either.
She was born a long time ago.
@wendy.krieger what chanel is the fireworks on?
@SchrodingersCat lol
nine, i think
13:22
you can moderate when nobodys looking
we're too close to the tower to see it.
Wow that's really cool ...
If nobody looks, which option you choose is never resolved!
nope not channel 9

@AccidentalFourierTransform, good morning to you too =)
11:25 pm = morning??!?
@heather hope you didn't see any of those images on physics.qandaexchange?

Oh, hey, @Kenshin: It's almost midnight there, isn't it?!
@Kaumudi.H sure is :D
I saw the fireworks earlier
there are two sets
user228700
:-D It's 7:00 PM over here...
user228700
Oh, cool!
@Kenshin, interestingly, I didn't get any emails, and I haven't looked on the site yet because i literally just woke up.
did you, uh, you know...take care of matters?
i thought we'd blocked his IP address.
@heather yes I think all of the images are deleted now
13:28
well thank you.
@heather but it raises the question
it is possible users may post content that shouldn't be seen by people under 18
@Kenshin, before we talk about my status as moderator
is S007's IP address blocked?
i thought it was from the last set of spammings
It must have come up before elsewhere on SE.
he has multiple IPs
every one that is known to be associated with him is blocked
::insert expletive here::
who has got a static IP nowadays?
it was the user "stackexchange" who posted the images
@Kenshin, so, he could pull another IP address out of thin air.
ack.
yes
@heather the images never made it to the live site
People who run their own ISP have static IPs
13:30
but they did require approval
I know one or two
and he posted like 10 of the same image
I don't know what motivates him to put in so much effort to post these images
@wendy.krieger yeah well ... ...
@Kenshin, right. last time he did that too, they were just a bit less, uh, inappropriate.
yep
oh did you see the image?
13:31
the images from this time?
no.
cool
this is the question i created:

Q: Age Limit for Site Moderator

KenshinI have recently developed a physics problem solving website where users post questions and answers. Users of low reputation on the site require their posts to be reviewed by a moderator before the posts appear on the live site. There is potential that a new user could post inappropriate images ...

depending on the legal aspect of course, I would like to stay a moderator.
@heather well you're a great moderator so I'm glad to hear that
thank you.
but I don't want you to be scarred by these images
13:34
"Suppose there is a physics problem solving website"? LOL
sure, yes, and i appreciate that you let me know about this.
@heather this time yes, in future I might not see it first
but if you're comfortable with potentially seeing this stuff then all is good
@Kenshin Kenshin, apart from the issue of protecting people, a legal age limit on an anonymous site will in general not be easy to implement ...
there is no age limit of stackexchange for moderators so I think it is probably ok
i don't know if I'm comfortable with it, per se, but i am willing to continue to moderate.
hmm, it might be interesting to create a bot to try to analyze images to try to find/delete this sort of content in advance.
13:36
@Sanya while a legal age limit cannot be verified, I could have moderators agree that they are over a certain age. If the moderator lies and then sees explicit material, it's their fault
i don't know if that's possible though.
@Kenshin seems like just agreeing to the risks of moderation to me.
@Kenshin yup, which actually seems like a good idea to me - in general letting people acknowledge that they read user-posted content at their own risk
@Sanya yeah that might work
SE may need to implement something to cover themselves legally. But it somebody underage works to evade the age restrictions, that probably frees SE of any liability.
13:37
@Buzz what age restrictions are in place on SE though?
there are none, so how is SE free from liability?
Of corurse, IANALAIAP.
No, I meant that if they did impose restrictions on moderators. (And maybe they should.)
yes then I agree with you
if someone ticks a box declaring they are 18 and they're not, I think it frees SE from liability
unless they are so young they couldn't even read what box they were ticking ;p
Yes, that's what I meant.
yeah cool
@heather I've updated the moderator agreement on physics.qandaexchange.com
I'll assume that by continuing to use the site you agree to the updated terms
okay
yup
13:52
@heather if you see lots of posts requiring review and you see an inappropriate image, pls just send me msg and I will review the remaining posts
@Kenshin, thank you for the offer; i'll do so.
10 seconds
I can see fireworks from hjere
oh, i forgot it's night for you
Happy New Year!
Happy new year!
2017: it's prime.
that was the problem with 2016.
user147690
14:07
New year happy.
@Kenshin Might be more of a question for Community Building
Happy new year @AlexClark
@Kenshin We only agree that we are 13 or older by signing up in the first place; SE doesn't have any notion of age restriction, mainly because none of the sites has a topic of a nature that would inherently be understood as "adult" in most cultures.
Although you might be concerned about Homebrewing or Beer & Wine ;P
I see
lol
2016 is 14*12*12. A kind of dozenal century, so to speak
don't you look at other bases!!!
In base 3/2, it's 000001200.
Wendy was looking for hats too. But too bad.
14:23
@ACuriousMind, let's say a user has been suggesting a lot of middling to not helpful at all edits. Is there any course of action there?
what on earth is base 3/2?
It was part of a mathematical theorm i was trying to prove, that if you can linearise an array of stones on a 2d abacus in one direction, you can do it in any direction.
@heather Raise a custom mod flag. We can ban individual users from suggesting edits or reviewing if it's clear they're using those priviledges consistently to no good. I'm not sure we've ever done so because we put the bar for "no good" rather high.
@ACuriousMind, yeah, i don't think it's quite that serious.
Base 10 is 10/1, you add a zero to the end, and it makes a multiple of 10, and at the front, multiplies it by 1. Here a zero on the end tripple it, and at the front doubles it.
14:26
@Kenshin It's worth noting that the particular age (13 years) is chosen because of US laws relating to internet sites that maintain personally identifiable information on children: the essentially require expensive and cumbersome record keeping and other guarantees.
So 12 is 3+2*2 = 7. And you successively double and tripple it, to get 2016.
And the law uses that age as the definition of "child".
@dmckee ty good to know
It is nearly New Year in the top end.
The new year is still 8 1/2 hours away here
14:30
Gosh, you must be west of cook!
@wendy.krieger Pretty far west, I'm in Europe :P
I heard told that's well past gatton.
I don't know who or what gatton is
Gatton is sixty miles west of Brisbane, australia. The proverbial black stump.
14:53
i might go to bed at 2017.0101.0101.
Or in base 12: 1201.0101.0101
user228700
Ey, @Kenshin: Happy New Year! :-D
Happy New Year @Kaumudi.H :D
what time is it there?

oh i'll see you in 2017 soon
8 40 pm i take it.

@Kaumudi.H do you know S007? He's spamming site again
user228700
@wendy.krieger Yep.
that's his new year's party

user228700
@Kenshin What?! Which site?
physics.qandaexchange.com
user228700
15:01
Define "spamming".
posting porn
luckily the anti spam protections have prevented any such images reaching the live site
user228700
Oh Dear God. In answers and all?
he tried yep
but the posts needed mod approval which I rejected
user228700
Wow, that really really sucks...
I think the person in question was actually hammering inapproariate info.
15:02
now he's resorted to using the feedback form at the bottom of the page lol
user228700
Spamming that?
it causes no harm, but he's sending me lots of emails with links to bad stuff (which i'm not clicking on)
cos it's obvious the links are dodgy
user228700
Damn. People on the internet can be real weirdos sometimes and you never even know...
yeah
when he was Doraemon I thought he'd really changed
so sensible and quite knowledgable too
and then just changes like a switch
user228700
15:05
:-/ That really sucks...
yea
it has it's pros tho
user228700
Yeah, u get to improve the site :-P
he's testing the site for me, and I can improve the spam prevention
exactly :)
