2:08 PM
Hi, everybody.

Nov 6 at 17:13, by 0celo7
I know you despise rigor so of course you don't like (understand) what I wrote there
@DanielSank, hello!

@Kenshin are you there

2:25 PM
@heather I'm having trouble deciding what to work on next.

@DanielSank It's Christmas, why are you looking for stuff to work on? :P

@koolman yeah i'm back bro

@ACuriousMind it's the 24th, first of all, and second, wtf do you think everyone here is Christian?

@ACuriousMind I think that comment may be offensive

what are your options @DanielSank?
ugh, scheme is driving me nuts
i can't even figure out how to define variables

2:29 PM
@DanielSank No, I don't think that, but many people get holidays around Christmas/New Year's Eve regardless of their religion. Is your use of "days off work" to work on personal projects instead?

@heather blog, linear algebra book, or perhaps cappy.

go blog.

@heather Why scheme, if I may ask? Did your parenthesis keys not get enough use? ;)

Ok there are a list of topics in the issues page. Anything look interesting to you?
@ACuriousMind lol
@ACuriousMind often, yes.

@ACuriousMind to be honest, i saw the xkcd, was interested, tried it, can't figure it out, and now i want too because it is cool but impossible.
and yeah, my parenthesis keys need the exercise.
@DanielSank hmm, how about the entropy one?

2:33 PM
In college I spent most of the time reviewing topics I hadn't mastered during the academic semester. Incidentally, that's how I got started on the Fourier transform book.

or video games, that's cool too. =)

@heather that's what Bernardo said too. I guess my mandate is now clear.
@heather that one would be easier...

entropy is interesting.
then start with the video game one.
do the easy ones, then you'll feel super-productive =)

^true

@DanielSank what id pedagogical document of fourier transform?

2:35 PM
@DanielSank, oh, i did a fun code golf the other day
7
A: Crazy 8s Code Golf

heatherPython 2, 108 bytes import random,string as s def f(a,b): while a<b:print[a,random.choice(s.letters+s.punctuation)][a%8<1];a+=1 Still shortening.

and even though it's the longest solution it got the most upvotes, for some reason

@heather On the other hand, doing the easy ones first means you have to tackle all the hard ones in succession without a breather afterwards

@ACuriousMind, true.

@Kenshin see link above
@heather nice!

yeah, so now i'm trying to do it in scheme
::shakes head:: a bad decision indeed.
::glares at interpreter::

@ACuriousMind hmm, also a good point. In fact, I got stuck on my favorite video games post because I was having trouble explaining the aesthetic and game design aspects that make Super Metroid so excellent.
@heather ahahaha

2:40 PM
too many parentheses!! Obi-Wan, help me!
=P
actually, I have so little typed the parentheses aren't the problem (yet) because I don't know what I'm doing, which is just sad.

You can probably configure your editor to highlight matching parentheses.

yep. but that's not even the problem yet.
oh, that's how you define variables...okay.
anyone here willing to help me debug/rewrite a scheme program?
it can be found here

2:57 PM
I don't know... sounds like an evil scheme.

lol

@heather yeesh, that language looks icky.

@DanielSank, i think the ick is more from me than scheme =P

Q: Is it possible to create a large scale double-slit experiment to communicate our cosmic presence?

Anne van RossumA double-slit experiment shows a nice interference pattern for an observer. If we would create one on a very large scale would it be feasible to use it as a cosmic one-way communication device? Is it possible to construct it? Is it possible to receive it on a large distance? Is it irrevocably ...

^??
uh
this doesn't make much sense

> This has resulted in scores of implementations,[29] most of which differ from each other so much that porting programs from one implementation to another is quite difficult

well, okay, it makes sense, but it doesn't seem like it should be on-topic
@DanielSank oh, you were talking about lisp in general, not my program.

3:09 PM
@heather indeed not.
@heather that except is from the Wikipedia article on scheme.

oh, okay.

They should let us keep our hats.

why, they aren't?

This is a winter bash. You don't take back all the party favors when the party ends!
@heather nah. It's temporary :-(

they can't take away my hats!
=(

3:12 PM
@heather they can.

@ACuriousMind, stop stealing my hats! =P
@DanielSank ::shakes head in dismay::

You know what we could do... we can scrape the images so that we can edit our avatars...

and have the hats even after the party

Yes

@heather Usually, the complaining starts only after the hats have gone:
Jan 5 '15 at 0:06, by ACuriousMind
They've taken our hats!!!

3:14 PM
or...even better...make some sort of thing, like mathjax is a bookmark you add, that saves your hats when winter bash is over

@ACuriousMind This year we're doing something about it.

we shall save the hats!
2

@heather that surely requires JavaScript.
::hides::

@DanielSank, don't tell Bernardo

Bernardo and I share everything...

3:15 PM
yes
maybe he'll make an exception?
for the importance of the hats?

He's my bro.
@heather but... Bernardo could program a kernel based on hats...

whatever you think is best

Hahaha
I'm so we have to figure out where the hat images are.

there should be a t-shirt that says "watch out, I'm scheming in scheme".
sorry, random comment of the day.

^ !!!

3:18 PM
@DanielSank maybe are they in the datadump with all the badge data and stuff?

I mean the actual image files.

oh.

I'm on my phone. I'll check it out later on laptop.

user254401
Do you use a client on your phone DanielSank?

user254401
Or just browser?

3:19 PM
@rubaton chrome
Works fine.

user254401
Ahh ok

Is there some fancy client program?

user254401
People have made some 'bridge' clients for linux I believe....

user254401
I wondered if there might be a simple one for android :)

@DanielSank You can get all the hat images from this meta.SE thread

3:22 PM
@ACuriousMind ahhh yes!

okay. so what do we do with the images?

Save them :-D

just...download them?

Yeah why not?

i was just confirming ::shrugs::

3:29 PM
Actually...
since that meta post isn't going anywhere I suppose there's no point in doing much of anything.

3:52 PM
@ACuriousMind Never saw speculate used as a transitive verb before.
I think I like it.

@DanielSank lol, I just forgot the "about" there

Man, describing why I like a thing for aesthetic reasons is hard.

i like it as well, now that you point that out.

"Because it's pretty dammit!"
@heather I am inclined to send you a "I'm scheming in scheme" t-shirt...

@ACuriousMind why is the wiener measure not conformally invariant
where is the characteristic length

4:04 PM
@DanielSank, if you do so, I'll wear it =P Seriously, I think I might ask my mom if there's anyway I can make the shirt...

@heather I'm laying it out right now.
What color you want?

@DanielSank, but, but, that costs money and stuff

I have a job, yo.
That's the fun part about growing up.
You get to spend $$ on stuff you like.
I can buy chocolate whenever I want!

BiwaScheme Interpreter version 0.6.4
Copyright (C) 2007-2014 Yutaka HARA and the BiwaScheme team

> (I'm scheming
       (in scheme))
^how's that for a design?

Hahahaha amzaing

4:07 PM
like, in white on black, like it's in a terminal?

yeah yeah this is good.
I'll get a few.
Text on front or back?

front, probably.

Looking for supplier with a fixed width font.

@Slereah Things don't need a "characteristic length" to be not conformally invariant. For instance, the Laplacian is only conformally co-/invariant in 2D, and there's no "characteristic length" for the Laplacian that I can see.

Hm
Is there an easy reason to see why the measure isn't conformally invariant
Or is it just
math

4:16 PM
no idea

@DanielSank, how's that ^?

hahaha I'm too slow.
It looks reasonable, but the text is going to be tiny.
I was trying to shorten it a bit.
Which website is that?
I've only found two with reasonable fonts.

it's customink.com
i used some version of courier for the font.

Let's make an Einstein and the Evidence T-shirt

@heather ?
Bigger text, and green (retro).
Just fooling around.

4:32 PM
yeah, the bigger text looks much better.

@heather ok
What about the color?

hmm, i don't know...i honestly could go either way. the green and the white both look good.

Well, flip a coin or something.
I'm thinking the text should be on the back.

hmm, really?
how about green, then

@heather Either way works, but a person's back is a bit broader than their front, and the first two lines of text are kinda long.

4:40 PM
@DanielSank true, that makes sense.

Ok, last thing: shirt style!
We can put text on both sides...
What the heck is the difference between a t-shirt and a "lady's" tshirt?
Extra bosom room?

maybe
i don't know, honestly

Well, can you do with regular?

yep

k
long/short sleeves?

4:44 PM
short sleeves?
i don't mind either way, though.
01010111 01100001 01110100 01100011 01101000 00100000 01101111 01110101 01110100 00001010 00001010

Whazzat?

It says watch out

HAHAHAHA
YES
zomg

made me think of putting something on the front
=P

in ASCII?

4:45 PM
i took ascii characters and encoded them in binary
though we could do it a different way.

@heather "encoded"? u mean "translated"

^ same thing

translated, yeah
57 61 74 63 68 20 6f 75 74
is hexadecimal

@heather, this is the greatest shirt ever.

@DanielSank, I think it's going to be pretty cool.

4:47 PM
Alright, who wants a Scheme shirt?
Heather, do you have a gmail account?

@DanielSank, yep. I think I sent you an email from it, not sure.

Ok I just sent you a chat message.

sent you a chat message back =)

5:13 PM
How many times a solution of pH = 3 be diluted to get a solution of pH = 6?

5:32 PM
hey merry christmas everyone

Merry Christmas
Happy Hanukkah
Kooky Kwanzaa
A tip top Tep
And a solemn and dignified Ramadan

ahh thats confusing
@Slereah whats that thing over your profile pic? looks cool

it's a winter bash hat

ahh how to get one??

thanks

@ArmaGeddON surely you can calculate...

in illustration 1, what does it mean by into the plane and outside the plane?

6:02 PM
"By detecting a mathematical inconsistency in our world, for example that can be equal both to as well as ; such an observation would make the existing alternatives of string theory conceivable alternatives because all of them are mathematically inconsistent as theories of gravity; clearly, nothing of the sort will occur; also, one could find out a previously unknown mathematical inconsistency of string theory - even this seems extremely unlikely after the neverending successful tests"
Why is lumo such a prick

@DanielSank, okay, I asked my mom, how much would I have to pay for the shirt?
I know you're getting a bunch, but mine would still cost extra.

6:25 PM
@heather uh... I want planning on charging anyone. I'm certainly not taking money from Bernardo.
I kinda just want to do something cool for people around here. We should get PSE shirts...
@dmckee can we get some swag?
*wasn't

Merry Christmas to everyone ..!!!!!!

@koolman Merry Christmas :)

7:03 PM
Merry christmas

7:34 PM
@DanielSank I'm not sure how we ask. Now what reasons have led to swag on any site in the recent past.
When the network was young swag when to active users on new sites with some regularity. I got some from Science Fiction & Fantasy, Physics, Seasoned Advice, and I think from [superuser].
But I haven't seen that in a while. Maybe because I haven't been highly active on any new sites recently.

@DanielSank, oh, okay, I'll let my mom know.
Hopefully she'll give the okay =)

7:51 PM
@dmckee well can we just make our own?

8:14 PM
Just checking if this gives me a hat!

@DanielSank I suppose so, but I don't know what a good way to organize it would be.
Presumably we start with some kind of design search.
Maybe people post here or to a meta question.

Guess who got a copy of Linear operations in Hilbert spaces for Christmas

But then how do we arrange production, money and distribution?
Are they sites that will print one at a time as people pay? And i so how much of a premium is that?

@Slereah, hmm....you? =)
@DanielSank, my program in scheme is now working, sort of.

well it wasn't my grandmother, certainly

8:28 PM
@dmckee Usually we post a meta question...
Answers would be designs. Votes indicate "I want that one".
@Slereah Me?

I dunno, maybe?
only you can answer that

@heather Groovy.

9:15 PM

Q: Let's design and get some Physics Stack Exchange swag

DanielSanke.g. shirts or hats. It would be fun. Post design proposals below as answers and we can take the top voted one after a couple weeks and place an order. I'm happy to do the purchase and distribute the pieces to other users as appropriate, but if the mods can get the SE staff to do it for us that...

1 hour later…
::shrugs:: I thought it'd be funny
=P

It's hilarious.

=D

I wrote a few sentences of my blog.
But then I helped mom cook.

nice.
that's good too.

10:37 PM
@DanielSank My friends and I made this

lol

that's great

I'm sure we can find a way to make it more about SE

@heather these
@SirCumference So aggressive!
Post it on the meta thread.

10:39 PM
@DanielSank I'm assuming it should say "Physics SE" on the back?

I have to say, I prefer to be able to select my attire for the day without worrying about starting a fight, but my opinion isn't the only one that matters ;-)

well, the homework thing could start a fight, who knows.

Yours is a tad aggressive too ;-)

Aggressive can be fun :P

Seems to be a trend so far...
Hmmm, physicists have latent aggressive feelings?

10:41 PM
There are shirts online like

Yes there are.
We should make one for us.
should = can if we want

I dunno, I'm not clever enough to think up a second one :(

For my own opinion: I'd go for something without any particular equations so that the design is appealing to all physicists on this site, i.e. not just the ones who use Maxwell's equations.
@SirCumference Post whatever you have!
The whole point of the meta post is to get a bunch of designs out there so we can vote on a favorite. There's nothing to gain by not posting lots of options.

@DanielSank I'm assuming they should be original, right?
Then I really have nothing other than the first one I sent

@SirCumference So post it.

10:47 PM
@DanielSank Should it say "Physics SE" on the back?

@heather Go check the notes repo
I did a lot of work
But need to improve my Tikz-foo
@DanielSank Plz review
I got home btw
Merry Christmas folks

@BernardoMeurer, will do, I to be honest haven't done much work, I'll do some now =)

@heather Note that, unless it's something absolutely insane to do in LaTeX, i.e. section 1.3, "add graph/image" should imply that you should do it using LaTeX tools
Look at section 1.4 for e.g.

oh, like pgfplot whatever
okay.

Yeah :)
Also, I just made changes
@heather So right now you have two major tasks
Look at 1.4
(Tell me when you're looking)
@heather Also, do you understand the rationale for using pgfplot and Tikz?

11:37 PM
@BernardoMeurer review what?

@ACuriousMind Are you familiar with the notion of a period matrix of a Riemann surface?
