12:00
@JohnRennie Huh? What dyou mean?
A rather interesting non-mainstream theory that doesn't hold much water, considering the graviton is expected to be an electrically neutral spin-2 boson & the electron is none of those things
user228700
@KyleKanos Oh, I'm sorry :-/ I hope u have a great day today, whatever's left...
@Kaumudi Oh it just started. It's 7 am here
@Kaumudi people tell you that the Glastonbury festival is an amazing place where you can have a fantastic spiritual experience. And people tell each other this to convince themselves that it's true.
user228700
Oh, I see. Well, I hope u have a great weekend then! :-)
user228700
12:02
@JohnRennie Okay, watch this and tell me the magic isn't real:
Coldplay having a crowd of (supposed) fans is magical?
user228700
Coldplay having a crowd that sings every verse along with them is, yes, magical and exciting to me.
Guess you've never been to a Pearl Jam concert then
user228700
Nope.
user228700
12:06
I haven't been to any concerts.
Okay. The crowd singing the songs for the band occurs frequently
@Kaumudi I'm with Kyle on this, I always sing along at gigs (sometimes in tune). But don't let us spoil the magic for you.
user228700
That I know, but, uhh, I couldn't possibly explain it to you. Loving Coldplay is not only about loving their music.
Sadly, there are people in the crowd who have no business singing because it hurts
@KyleKanos if you can hear yourself (or anyone else) sing the sound system isn't turned up enough :-)
12:09
@JohnRennie True for indoor concerts. I'm not terribly convinced for outdoor concerts
user228700
@JohnRennie :-) I don't think I could explain loving Coldplay. If u love them like I do, then you'd just get it, but if u don't, then there's no way I could explain it.
user228700
Damn, I've never been to any concerts. I swear to God, I'll go before I die.
Oh well, I have to go up and change. The SciFi reading group I go to is meeting in town this afternoon.
I guess I'm not particularly fond of Coldplay. I mean, they're alright & I'd listen to them if they were on the radio or something, but I wouldn't go out of my way to listen
Mew
Mew
12:29
what about Neikd?
Dunno what that means
Mew
Mew
sorry it's NEIKED
it's an artist
that is in top 5 songs in Aus atm
Eh, it's alright
Probably same thing as with Coldplay: listen to it if it's on, but not go searching for it
Mew
Mew
12:36
not bad
how about this one:
Well it's 12 minutes long, give it time to get better
Mew
Mew
you must like this one ^
so catchy and tuneful
It's alright, but I only gave it like 20 seconds because I wanted to get back to Holy Judgement (Final Destination) Part 2
Mew
Mew
well thanks for giving it a try
it's one of the best
user116211
I just saw a problem in the exercise which asks to prove the set of Riemann-integrable functions with domain $J$ is a sub-ring of the ring $R^J\,.$ I've still few pages left to come to the exercise, but thought the problem might be interesting @Secret.
12:57
which book?
13:10
hello everyone
Mew
Mew
halo heather
@obe, please don't leave. I gave you girl advice for crying out loud =P
@Mew, hello
Mew
Mew
wats ur favourite song heather
@Mew, hmm, good question
Mew
Mew
thanks bro
13:15
I like Young the Giant, Miike Snow, Imagine Dragons, Two Door Cinema Club, MGMT...it's going to be hard to pick a single one.
Mew
Mew
wow never heard of those
is this the music for teens of today?
@Mew, you should try listening to a few of them, they're all really good. And no, I don't think so. Well, maybe Imagine Dragons a bit, but I think I have rather weird music taste.
I'd say Animal and Ghengis Khan, by Miike Snow, Roots and It's Time by Imagine Dragons would be good, and then, hmm
Mew
Mew
noit bad
Maybe Apartment by Young the Giant
Mew
Mew
is that dark type music?
13:19
well it's all alternative/rock/electronic, I've never really heard the term "dark" used with reference to music so I couldn't say.
Mew
Mew
i made it up lol
just the one i listend to sounded "dark"
not bad
which one?
Mew
Mew
but I guess didn't sound "happy"
but more depressed
um lemme check
I can't find it
they all sound electronic tho
okay, well, yeah...maybe try one of the Young the Giant ones, those are a bit less electronic
Mew
Mew
na electronic is good still
13:22
okay, then you could go for "Dropping out of school" by brad sucks or "making me nervous" by brad sucks
electronic, fabulous beat, not fabulous band name/song title =)
uh...is it by the right band? I've never watched the music video.
Mew
Mew
u should
not
yeah no
Mew
Mew
do you like 45K magic?
24K magic actually
13:26
How about a Bayes tag?
Mew
Mew
what's that
@innisfree show us the youtube vid
I've never listened to them
Mew
Mew
it's a song not a band
24K Magic is a song, and Bruno Mars is the artist
actually, listening to it I think I might've heard parts of it once
hmm, not so bad
Mew
Mew
13:34
@heather, listen to this one it's better:
okay, let me just finish up the song I'm listening too =)
Mew
Mew
different song also about magic
ok
In short: The zero terms of division by zero algebras form a set of idempotents in the + structure, equipped with a natural one sided partial order dictated by the type of additive identities present
@KyleKanos hmm I guess.
Mew
Mew
cool wiki
13:38
This is why RPS magmas popped up as a result, because the rock paper scissors relation are also equpipped with a natural ordering determined by which elements dominante what
(although when doing that, we no longer have division by zero algebras)
We argued that all RPS magmas can be modelled by zero terms, hence binary division by zero provide a natural source of RPS magmas
@Mew, also a halfway decent song

@Kaumudi I saw a bit of srk's speech and ar rahman's performance....i think coldplay hasn't started yet...seems more of a bollywood festival rather than a coldplay concert...:-D...I will see the whole recorded version tomorrow!
Anonymous
But global citizen seems like a good initiative :)
user228700
@S007 Coldplay is up next :-)
user228700
Yes, it's a great initiative!

Mew
Mew
13:49
i thought you said it was tmr the other day
that's ages away
y u even studying
user228700
xD Pretty sure I didn't.
Mew
Mew
oh someone did
some liar on here
user228700
@Mew People prepare for 5 years.
Mew
Mew
wow
why?
what is this exam?
what's it for?
user228700
@Mew I explained it to Ocelo7 once.
user228700
13:50
In detail.
Mew
Mew
but i'm not ocel0
and he lost his voice
=)
@Kaumudi, what is this exam that you must study for 5 years?
user228700
Yeah, but u could search for it in the transcript with the word "JEE" or "India" or something.
Mew
Mew
^ what heather said
Kaumuuuuuu
It's midnight here
That's too complicated at midnight
user228700
(0celo7 kept saying "Jesus, India is crazy" :-P)
Mew
Mew
13:52
that's mean
nowonder that dude got banned
user228700
@Mew Okay, it's a university entrance exam.
Mew

U shat that?! O.o
Mew

user228700
Ohh. "Is that it".

too quick for my keyboard to understand
user228700
Clearly :-P
Oct 4 at 13:16, by Kaumudi
@0celo7 OK. Two exams called JEE MAINS and JEE ADVANCED are considered the holy grail of exams in India. (JEE=Joint Entrance Examination)The scores on the first exam are taken as a standard benchmark for admission into many colleges here. MAINS is conducted for 3 hours and has 90 multiple choice questions, with a marking scheme that awards +4 marks to correct answer and -1 for the wrong answer.
here is where the conversation starts
user228700
@heather: U did it! xD
Mew
Mew
wow thanks heather :)
13:54
=P
Mew
Mew
what a champ
user228700
^ Exactly :-D @heather
(::takes a bow::) thank you, thank you
=P
user228700
Uhhhh. This Jay Z isn't getting off the stage >.<
user228700
@Mew xD U don't blame 0celo7 now, dyou?
Mew
Mew
13:56
can u resit Kaumu
what if you have one bad day?
but you are a supergenius
user228700
Just one more time.
Mew
Mew
but have the flu or something
user228700
After an effing year.
Mew
Mew
wow
is this ur resit or first time
user228700
Resit.
Mew
Mew
13:57
what did you get last time
user228700
I suuucked.
Mew
Mew
so does that mean u have to go to a poor community
if you didn't resit?
user228700
Wtf? O.o
Mew
Mew
it said in the earlier post that the exam determines what community you can be in
user228700
No! I can't join the university, that's all.
user228700
13:58
@Mew OMG I did not say that! O.o
user228700
Dude, u're baked...due to sleep deprivation, perhaps.
Mew
Mew
" I should mention, at this point, that there is "reservation" of seats in colleges for different sections of our society; the cutoff for communities that used to be below the poverty line are marginally lower than for a "better off section"."
@Mew, that's not what that means
user228700
The cutoff to pass the exam, man.
that's saying that people below the poverty line don't have to score as well on the test to get into college
Mew
Mew
13:59
oh i see
@Kaumudi, come to America where you don't have to mess with crazy exams...=P
sorry, but that exam just sounds nuts
Mew
Mew
i'm sleep deprived Kaumu
user228700
Yeah, the trouble is tho, these "poor communities" are not so poor.
Mew
Mew
I've been up really early with activities all day
user228700
*anymore.
Mew
Mew
14:00
so they get an advantage?
user228700
Yes. An unfair advantage. Don't even get me started.
Mew
Mew
that's unfair
@Kaumudi, deep breath in...deep breath out...=)
user228700
@heather :-) Yes.
user228700
God, when did middle schoolers get so smart?
Mew
Mew
14:01
so what degree do u want Kaumu?
in Aus, anyone can get a physics degree pretty much
because the cut off is so low
but few can get a medical degree
because the cut off is high
user228700
@Mew The answer to that...is very complicated :-P
Mew
Mew
how come
it's just wat u want
user228700
Not really...
Mew
Mew
y
parents?
user228700
14:03
I mean, I knew what I wanted.
which was...
user228700
Which was to do research in Physics, one day.
user228700
But that changed.
how/why?
Mew
Mew
why did it change tho?
14:04
and to what did it change too?
(we're just peppering you with questions today, sorry)
Hi guys,. How do you show that ghost fields in non-abelian gauge theories must transform under the adjoint representation of the symmetry group?
user228700
@heather Don't apologize. I don't have any friends so this is actually a pleasant change :-P
@Kaumudi, then the humans around you are stupid for not being your friend. =)
user228700
@heather There are no humans around me, that's the trouble :-P Well, except for my parents and my two young twin sisters.
Mew
Mew
how come?
14:06
@Kaumudi, too busy studying to interact with the rest of humanity? =)
Mew
Mew
Kaummu where r u?
user228700
@heather Something like that, lol :-P All of my school friends are already in college and nobody Ik has dropped a year to resit, so...yeah.
oh, that makes sense.
Mew
Mew
Kaumu why did you repeat, was ur score not quite high enough for physics degree?
user228700
@Mew No. I could've gotten into other good institutions but....yeah, I needed to repeat...to sort of try and prove myself. It's complicated :-P
Mew
Mew
14:09
true
So what degree do you want to do @Kaumudi or is it secret?
user228700
Basically u guys are the only people I talk to :-P
Mew
Mew
Oh I feel special :D
user228700
@Mew Secret! I'll tell u next year, promise! :-P
user228700
@Mew :-)
Mew
Mew
aww
that's ages
user228700
14:11
xD
user228700
...if u're still around then, ie.
Mew
Mew
hope so
trying to stay healthy
user228700
xD
user228700
So no sleep?
Mew
Mew
haha
yeah that's a good start
14:12
lol
Mew
Mew
i have an early morning tmr too, peeps visting
user228700
Since u're so sleep deprived, u should probably get to bed, u know :-P
Mew
Mew
laterz all
user228700
Bye :-)
@Mew, good night =)
Mew
Mew
14:12
goodnight :)
(it feels so weird to say that, it's morning here)
user228700
@heather :-P It's... 8 PM here.
well you're basically 12 hrs ahead then, it's 8 AM here =P
any interesting physics problems you're currently working on?
user228700
Oh wow! Have an epic day? :-P
user228700
@heather Nope. Watching T.V :-P (Coldplay. India. Live telecast)
14:14
@Kaumudi, hope too, yeah, want to keep going with my calculus studies. =)
oh, yeah
coldplay is good
but not the best, still good tho
user228700
Coldplay is life <3 (To me :-P)
no band is life to me
I love music
user228700
Have fun doing calculus! :-D
@Kaumudi, yeah! Calculus is really fun.
user228700
@heather Same here! :-) Damn, why are we like, 3-4 years and a couple of continents apart? :-P
14:16
@Kaumudi, we need to fix this somehow =P
get together sometime, like in real life
not sure if that'll ever happen though
user228700
:-P We can't do anything about the age gap. But yeah, if I ever make it to America/u come to India. I could be ur tour guide if u ever decide to come to India, u know! I've promised DanielSank the same :-)
that would be cool, dunno if I can persuade my parents to go to India anytime soon though =)
user228700
xD Okay. I might go to America someday!
and yeah, if you ever make to iowa, I'll try to figure something out to get us to meet up
user228700
Sure :-D
14:19
though I'm not sure how my parents will respond too "yeah, I met this person on stack exchange..." XD
user228700
xD Same here. At least we're both girls so that's a good start :-P
yes, that is indeed a good start
and we're both interested in physics/mathematics
user228700
Yes :-)
we're both on the younger side of things
certainly not adults
user228700
@heather Certainly not xD
user228700
14:21
Well, next year, I'll be 18... technically an adult :-P
ah, technicalities, who cares =P
user228700
:-) Okay, Coldplay is coming up! I'm off! Have a nice day Heather!
user228700
Oh, before I go.
yeah?
user228700
I just heard someone say "The very fact that u're here is testament for the fact that u're here" xD Lol.
14:23
what does that even mean? xD
circular logic, if anything is.
user228700
Exactly xD
enjoy coldplay!
user228700
Ahhhh, damn these ads >.<
right? always coming on at the wrong moments
user228700
^ and lasting for literally (not even kidding!) 15 mins!
14:25
geesh
user228700
Exploiting my love for Coldplay, the morons -.-
always for the strangest things, too
user228700
Yeah >.<
worst are the political ads though
user228700
^ We don't have that many of them, phew :-P
14:27
election time around here is madness
"x person is an idiot"
user228700
Aah. I'm so sorry :-/
"no y person is an idiot"
makes me glad I don't really watch tv much
and for when election season is over
-_-
user228700
Yeah :-/
user228700
user228700
(Always finding ways to spread the awesomeness that the Vlogbrothers are :-P)
14:30
"In particular, we have shown that non-time orientable spacetimes all fail to be F quantum compatible"
Take that spacetimes
14:48
Apparently F-locality is the notion that for every point of a spacetime, there exists a globally hyperbolic neighbourhood such that the QFT algebra of the restriction of the algebra of the whole space is isomorphic to the algebra it has as a spacetime of its own
Oooh that paper also explains the terms of the Hadamard form
That is nice
15:18
Is anyone able to help with EM induction
This scenario: For a conducting bar sliding right along two rails, with a uniform magnetic field pointing into the page. Why is there a change in flux when the bar moves from left to right inside the field - surely flux is constant? It supports it by saying flux = BA where A = length of bar * distance moved right, I.e the area 'swept out', and so d(BA)/dt = d(Blx)/dt = Blv. I thought the area was the area of the coil inside field (length*width of coil), not the area swept out.
15:39
The flux is changing when you just slid into the uniform field from no field. When within the field the flux should stay constant
user228700
@S007: Bad mistake. I'm crying now I know I wasn't able to be there :'-(
"Prove the following: If $ax=a$ for $a=0$ then $x=1$"
ax = a - given
a = a - recursive property
a $\neq$ 0 - given
then, uh, let's see
what property is it...
What is this algebraic structure, is it a ring, semiring, field, group?
then you could do x = a/a - division prop. of equality
is the identity in this structure unique, is 1 the two sided identity?
in Mathematics, 1 min ago, by heather
what property is it where any number divided by itself equals 1, as long as that number $\neq$ 0?
You are working in the reals?
15:54
@Secret, yup, just found out it is the multiplication inverse theorem
so then we can say that a/a = 1 - multiplication inverse theorem
ok then I see DHMO and co. have taken care of your question
and then finish it off by saying x = 1 - substitution property of equality
What on earth is the "multiplication inverse theorem"?
sweet, proven
in Mathematics, 2 mins ago, by DHMO
@heather multiplicative inverse theorem: for all non-zero real $x$, there exists $x^{-1}$ such that $x\circ x^{-1} = x^{-1}\circ x=1$
@ACuriousMind
Yeah, that's...not a theorem.
15:55
basically the axiom: existence of multiplicative inverse
At least, no one refers to it as that
It's just a fact that reals have multiplicative inverses
Calling it a "theorem" seems rather ridiculous to me
and such inverses are unique (for reals)
O nvm
Especially since I don't think that really answers your question, @heather. Basically, you should think about how the operation "divide by a" is defined.
@ACuriousMind, should I say "a/a = 1 - fact that reals have multiplicative inverses" then? =)
but seriously though, DHMO and co also gave the def of division:
in Mathematics, 4 mins ago, by DHMO
and then the definition of division is $\dfrac ab := a\circ b^{-1}$
in Mathematics, 4 mins ago, by DHMO
therefore $\dfrac xx = x\circ x^{-1} = 1$ (where $x\ne 0$)
Okay, that is the answer :)
15:58
so what is the right name for the theorem?
or property or fact or whatever
Although I'll say that using \dfrac instead of \frac and no brackets is terrible TeX style ;P
@heather Why does it need a name? It's the existence of multiplicative inverses.
(::shrugs::) fair enough.
If you want a name, it's part of what makes the reals a so-called "field"
hmm, next problem, prove that $x^2-y^2 = (x-y)(x+y)$
well, we have a constant x and a constant y - given
and then if we have the expression $x^2 - y^2$ - given? I suppose that's given.
no, no, nevermind, maybe I'll do this a different way
we have a constant x and y, and the expression (x-y)(x+y) - given
and then $(x-y)(x+y) = x^2 + xy -xy - y^2$ - distributive property
and then $(x-y)(x+y) = x^2 - y^2$ - substitution property of equality
hmm, I think that proof makes sense.
Actually when you expand (x-y)(x+y) you also make use of the commutative property as -xy=-yx
(plus tons of other theorems such as (-1)x=x, although I am guessing your book does not need that level of treatment)
16:07
well, maybe it does, I dunno
I'm looking at Spivak's calculus
but then I just started proofs in geometry class, so I don't know if I should even attempt that level of detail.
Anonymous
16:48
@Kaumudi I feel you buddy XD...next year you should book tickets in advance for the Coldplay concert (if it happens i.e. :-P) and you will be free from exams too...I just returned and now I am gonna watch the recording :-D
