@KyleKanos Good luck, see you in 5 hours

Anyone know why pip installing scimath would not install scimath.units?
Pretty weird.
user228700
01:13
Ello everyone :-) I've a quick question about this belt of stability of nuclei:
user228700
user228700
I am correct in my understanding that ${\beta}^-$ decay occurs when the number of neutrons is greater than the number of protons, yes?
user228700
This would mean that in the above graph, $N/Z>1$.
user228700
The neat black line is the line $x-y=0$.
user228700
Ah, never mind, I figured it out!
01:19
@Kaumudi, hello!
anyone have any good calculus/physics problems that are on the easier side?
@heather Is Larson on my books folder?
it has some good exercises
@BernardMeurer, let me check
and it's also a great read
I don't think so
@heather Okay, let me get it there, one second
Uploading, should take ~15 mins
I'll let you know when it's done
01:28
@BernardMeurer, okay, thank you!
@heather No worries :)
01:43
@heather Upload done. I recommend you read Larson and do the exercises :)
@BernardMeurer, hmm, Larson does not seem to be showing up...I'll wait a minute.
@heather it's Calculus 10th ed blablabla
hmm, still not showing up.
@heather Check your email
@BernardMeurer, ah, just arrived =)
01:47
@heather :)
02:21
Guys
1) The Cauchy horizon for an edgeless surface can only have null generators that are geodesics with no past endpoints
2) A Cauchy horizon is compactly generated if those generators enter a compact region at some point in the past
With those facts, do you think it is mandatory that all such Cauchy horizons contain closed null geodesics
Well then again that paper says they must at least have strong causality violations
They may get accumulation points that are almost CTCs
@BernardMeurer where you have uploaded it
@BernardMeurer, it's the strangest thing, I've tried opening the book a thousand different ways, and it won't load.
02:41
I feel ashamed to admit it, but I only realized that electrons get their name from "electric" a while ago...
Dear god I think there's something wrong with me
The name comes from "electric ion", even
@Slereah Holy crap!
The ion thing generalized to all other particles even though it's dumb
This shouldn't be blowing my mind, but it is...
Sigh...
@heather Download it
Open with Chrome
@koolman Personal fileserver
02:48
@Slereah Though, since we have positrons, shouldn't electrons be "negatrons"?
@BernardMeurer, I did
@heather Try $ sudo apt-get install okular
it's what I use for reading PDFs
@BernardMeurer, okay, will do
@BernardMeurer what is personal file server
Can you give me the link
@koolman It's a place with files which belong to me. I'm afraid I cannot.
02:58
Ok
Anonymous
@Kaumudi The nucleus is unstable if the neutron-proton ratio is less than 1:1 or greater than 1.5:1. In beta minus decay N>Z (obviously above the "neat" black line N=Z, y=x). The favorable region is the light blue region shown in the graph.
Last night dream has a self referential nature: If you assume me in the dream is real life, then the events actually occurred. But at the same time, after all the events have occured, I comment how I cannot believe I and the dream can wrote such a good story, and then log down the events as if it is a previous night dream that took place within the dream

The actual dream itself is too long to be posted here. However the story is about an education manager who was devastated at the death of a kind and popular teacher, to the point he decided to increase the number of chinese lessons, which

@Secret How do you actually remember so many details ? :-O Dreams are usually forgotten once you wake up...
I have no idea, I only knew that I can start to remember dreams after I read about Lucid Dreaming in wikipedia back in my grade 11
and in fact, what I remember up there is only around 70% of it. It is very rare for me (and anyone) to have 100% dream recall, but sometimes it does happen
I usually have a 20s to 60s time to get to my computer before most of the dream started to fade. some memorable scenes however solidify in memory
Anonymous
Well, you one of the most strangest person I've ever spoken to :)....I had lucid dreams a couple of times too.... but never on a regular basis ! You seem to be dreaming everyday ! Wow !
Anonymous
Do you even see equations in your dream ?
I do dream nearly everyday (there are 3 known cases where there is no dream is as if I blackout), but not all are lucid dreams nor lucid nightmares.

I do see equations, but they are mostly very hard to be 100% extract. Sometimes I remember enough that after doing a reality check, it caused me to learn actual maths and physics
Equation examples:
Anonymous
03:18
@Secret You know what ? You might be Srinivasa Ramanujan reborn as a physicist :-P...Ramanujan too could see new equations in his dreams (according to the books I read about him)....but all of this is very hard to believe for normal people like me :-P
user228700
@S007: Yeah, yeah, Ik. My question was different but I figured it out, never mind. Thanks anyway :-)
user228700
Oh, BTW, this is happening:
Well the catch is that most of the equations in the dream are nonsense maths, it is only after googling that it refer me to something related that is sensible most of the time
user228700
And I'm dying inside.
Anonymous
03:20
@Kaumudi where is it happening ?
Anonymous
city ?
user228700
Mumbai.
Anonymous
@Secret I'd say keep noting them down...maybe you'll come across something ground-breaking :)
user228700
I'm not even kidding. My every inch is crawling with regret and pure sadness.
That is the primary reason I dream log: Because I am extracting ideas
I LOVE ideas and mixing them
03:22
@Kaumudi What's happening?
user228700
The Global Citizen festival.
@Kaumudi Yeah, what about it?
Anonymous
@Kaumudi Oh! Btw I don't have any special interest in such concerts :-P Hope you can get over your sadness :-P
user228700
Headlined by Coldplay, featuring other "guests" of the likes of Demi Lovato, Jay Z and The Vamps.
@Kaumudi So? It's just some show
user228700
03:25
I'm a die-hard fan of Coldplay, man.
user228700
It's not just "some show" if Coldplay's headlining.
user228700
It's the show :'-(
@Kaumudi Then why are you dying? Just go to the show
Is it like, a million dollars per ticket?
user228700
I can't :-( No, the tickets don't cost any amount of money, actually.
Anonymous
@BernardMeurer Different city :-P
user228700
03:27
Dude, it's happening TODAY.
So? India is smaller than Brazil, and I've gotten a 18h bus trip to see a concert before :P
It can't possibly be that far away
Well, indeed it is too late now
user228700
Yes, it's too late now.
user228700
Of course I knew about this months in advance, but unfortunately, there was no hope of me getting to go even then.
@Kaumudi Parents?
Anonymous
@BernardMeurer 18 h bus trip in India ? :-O
user228700
03:30
Yep. Also, I can't attend the concert without my best friend (because we discovered the band together and fell in love with it together) and it would be cruel to go w/o him. Unfortunately, he can't go 'cause exams.
@S007 No, in Brazil, idk where 18h bus trip in India would get you to
@Kaumudi Bah, that sucks
Anonymous
@BernardMeurer In India after a 18 h bus trip I would faint out of exhaustion...too much traffic jam :-P
@S007 Meh, I sleep easily :P
user228700
Yeah :'-( Anyway, I don't have a question to ask. I'll be on my way then. ::Crawls away-No energy to walk on account of the dying::
@Kaumudi dying?

@BernardMeurer I wonder if you could sleep in such high temperatures of 40 degrees :-P

@BernardMeurer Oh really ? You guys must be superhumans :-D
I've seen a guy fry an egg in the asphalt
@S007 We have super airconditioning
03:36
@Kaumudi Not going because of your friend is a mistake, in my opinion.
Anonymous
you must be living in north east brazil then ? @BernardMeurer
user228700
@DanielSank Will u elaborate as to why?
@DanielSank Agreed, didn't want to say nothing about that
@S007 Rio, I don't live in Brazil anymore though
@Kaumudi Because two people who care about each other usually want the other to experience happiness.
It doesn't make sense to not have fun on account of a friend.
Anonymous
@BernardMeurer Aha...i see :)
03:37
You go, you have fun. In what way does that make your friend's life worse?
Your stated goal is to reduce world suck. So do it.
I have to go.
user228700
Yeaaah, seeing as u have to go, I'll tell u about it another time, if u want. Bye :-)
Ah, home
Christmas will be fun

The James Bond series focuses on a fictional British Secret Service agent created in 1953 by writer Ian Fleming, who featured him in twelve novels and two short-story collections. Since Fleming's death in 1964, eight other authors have written authorised Bond novels or novelizations: Kingsley Amis, Christopher Wood, John Gardner, Raymond Benson, Sebastian Faulks, Jeffery Deaver, William Boyd and Anthony Horowitz. The latest novel is Trigger Mortis by Anthony Horowitz, published in September 2015. Additionally Charlie Higson wrote a series on a young James Bond, and Kate Westbrook wrote three novels...

@Secret Uh, are we missing some context here?
04:22

Do you even see equations in your dream ?
Caption: Miscellaneouos dream equations all in one screen
Some of these actually inspired MSE questions
Anonymous
@Secret Hawwwwwwwwwwwwww! You should really enrol for a Guinness World Record !!!
while others lead me to stumble upon topics that I won't stumble very soon otherwise. For example, the GF equation lead to Frechet derivatives when I ask my professor about whthere there exists a divergence operator with countably infinite variables
I remember when I was in middle school, my dad helped me solve a math problem
Somehow he got an answer with two decimal points
As in, 5.3.6
is the original problem involving fractions?
@Secret Me?
04:30
yup
Don't remember :/
nvm then
@Secret Why, is that mathematically possible?
I don't think it is meaningful.
28
Q: Is it possible to have multiple decimal points in a number?

timothy.s.lauIs it ever possible to have multiple decimal points in a number? If so, how? For example is the value 1.1.2 possible? This is a question posed purely out of curiosity.

One possibility is that your dad might have accidentally dotted his pen on the paper after he finsihes writing the answer
resulting in an extra decimal point. This is a rather common accident
Anonymous
@SirCumference Dot stands for simple multiplication in some countries 5.3.6= 90

you didn't need to necessarily agree with me
But seriously, what's up?

user116211
@secret, like Lattice theory? Do you know the proof of Stone's theorem of Boolean Lattices? It's interesting.

Anyways, @obe, if you don't like coming in the chat lately, that's okay; but that doesn't mean you have to delete your SE account. I do very much like conversing with you. Lately I'm quite busy and also that 0celot is not here, so I'm not active here; but I'll wait when he comes.

user116211
@obe wait, lemme make a Skype account for me first.
user218912
@SirCumference sorry but I already decided.
@obe It's never too late to change your mind
Just think it through
user218912
04:58
I still have 23 hours to confirm, maybe i'll change my mind.
@obe You can't tell us what's wrong?
user218912
no because idk myself.
@obe Think it through, ask yourself if there's really something wrong
If you're sure, then you should delete your account. Otherwise, consider staying

@SirCumference I think it is no use asking any more. Sometimes people have personal reasons and need a break. He can make a new account anytime. I too had deleted my account twice and made a new one later on.

@Kaumudi I agree. You are right here. Sometimes people need a break :).

@JohnRennie Ow! You are quite lucky to have been there in the early days. :-D I agree that nowadays it has become a bit corporate. I have only seen a few videos of the festival though :-P it is quite famous
A friend of mine used to work there setting up the electric generators and wiring, and I used to help out sometimes. I've met the organiser Michael Eavis.

@JohnRennie: How's ur Sunday going? :-)
@Kaumudi I have to say I don't think there is anything special about the Glastonbury festival. It's always fun to go to any event with your friends, but the fun is being with your friends rather than being at Glastonbury. Any event would be just as enjoyable.
@Kaumudi Sunday? Did I sleep longer than I thought? :-)
@JohnRennie Yes you did
user228700
11:55
@JohnRennie Well, the crowd at Glastonbury is hands down, so much more passionate.
user228700
@JohnRennie Aiii >.< Saturday :-P
@KyleKanos I was out last night for a curry and just one or two beers, and I'm a bit tired and emotional this morning. So I'm quite prepared to believe I slept for 24 hours :-)
user228700
@S007: It appears that the "standing arrangement" at the event is effed up, because of which the crowd suuuucks, oh my God.
@JohnRennie Hmm, well can I convince you it's actually Monday?
@Kaumudi there is a bit of a Glastonbury mythology. And that's fine, we invent mythologies to make life more interesting, but you don't want to take them too seriously :-)
11:58
And if it makes you feel better, I woke to my wife crying because she wasn't sleeping because the new baby was fussing for some time.
@KyleKanos no-one is shouting at me down my mobile phone so it can't possibly be Monday :-)
