Just a comment on this, the first time I asked something here (it was not a good question) I got bashed pretty badly. I was obviously a noob but that didn't seem to matter the least. That question is now deleted, but still if not for ACM & DS who later on answered me nicely I wouldn't have come back
I recall being accused of plagiarism by @DavidZ on my second question or so
and I had a few questions closed
I had an excellent experience on every single question I posed.
Never any annoyances.
you're a genius, we know
I feel that, as long as you're able to clearly convey your questions, this community is pretty reasonable.
Then again, once you're high-rep it's not the same, and the questions I asked as a low-rep user are now... 2 years or so old (more?)
I got questions closed as homework
And I didn't understand because they were not homework
@ACuriousMind Screw it, computing the Christoffels of the product.
God help me.
A miracle occurs

@DavidZ I intended that as an awareness raising comment. Nothing more. As I said, I have encouraged the user to participate more.
The parallel transport equation with a curve of the form $(\gamma(t),p)$ depends only on the connection on the first factor
@Danu I tried to emphasize that this is a level-headed, intelligent, thoughtful person who knows how to use online communities.
This person mentioned specific usernames, and I have refrained from re-raising those names here in chat lest I be chastised.
@DanielSank So are there perhaps any examples of things he/she/it found objectionable?
@DanielSank I see... Tricky situation.
Frankly, the names mentioned are entirely in line with my own opinion about certain users whose contributions generally bring down the quality of the site.
So, I chose to make a somewhat general statement, raising awareness, and leave it at that.
OK. Well, I do agree that there are some problematic users (and they weren't around when I was a low-rep user).
But what is one to do?
It's hard to somehow deter such people from participating, if they are careful enough to not obviously overstep the line.
21:27
I found it interesting that this user, who doesn't even use the site that much, almost immediately identified a specific user as a major problem. My coworker did not leave in a huff. Like I said, he is very level-headed, but he did zero in on one specific poisonous user.
@Danu Again, I am bringing this up to raise awareness. Perhaps next time that user is flagged for unconstructive/rude comments the mods will remember I mentioned this.
@DanielSank Yeah, I guess.
@Danu It's not you :)
@DanielSank Sure, I'm just saying that without more information to act on, the awareness will have been raised and then it will fall back to its usual level and nothing will change.
@DavidZ Fine, then I've wasted a few minutes of you time and for that I'm sorry.
@DanielSank lol
21:29
Sure, if you say so
@DavidZ If I say so what?
@DanielSank Don't be pouty :P
@DanielSank If you say so, you've wasted a few minutes of my time.
@Danu Pouty? I'm just not sure what to do. A potentially great contributor is already put off by a user here. I want to do what I can to right that.
@DanielSank Sure, and nobody thinks that's not a great idea.
But DavidZ or other mods cannot really do anything about it unless you give specific instances where a line was overstepped.
So, unless examples/"evidence" is forthcoming, they'll eventually just forget about it
It's not that you're wasting time, it's just hard to really do anything against something so unspecific
We all know there are some not-so-nice users on this site, but it's very hard to do something against that :\
21:31
@Danu Dude, I'm not asking for an immediate response. I'm not an idiot :)
@DanielSank I know, but your "fine, then I've wasted [...]" response sounded disappointed to me
@Danu Yes well perhaps if I remind the mods about this next time that user says something ridiculous it will help put this (multi-year-long) situation into perspective.
@Danu It was meant as an apology.
@DanielSank Ah, okay. Misunderstood your tone, then.
Internet is bad for clarity of tone.
OH REALLY?
21:34
I'm trying really hard to be objective and not fall into the emotional frenzy I tend to get into when thinking about users like this.
(see what I did there? :P)
Yes. You're so clever ::pats Danu on back::
AM I?
vzn
vzn
"a potentially great contributor" :P
@vzn huh?
21:39
Lel
Great reaction
I don't get it.
@DanielSank Your reaction makes it seem like him saying he's a potentially great contributor is such an absurd joke that you don't even get it, which would be a very dry way to insult someone.
I'm so confused.
What does it mean when @vzn uses those left pointing arrows?
It's so weird.
pointing at himself.
@0celo7 Oh!
Everything has fallen into place.
Thanks, @0celo7!
21:47
lol, np
@DanielSank lol
You accidental comedian
@DanielSank While active enough, the site is slow moving, and it is easy for a few people to seemingly dominate comments. I believe you already once noticed that there isn't really an effective way to combat that, since getting into arguments with them tends to be pointless, and just leads to the whole thread getting deleted/moved to chat sooner or later, making it a waste of your time.
@ACuriousMind I do think that after a long enough pattern of posting unconstructive, combative, degrading, and misleading comments is established a user should be handled. And I think the mods do a great job of handling these situations. I have no complaints at all. I only posted that message above so that if/when that user causes more trouble we have some one more bit of evidence that this person is a problem.
Maybe that's foolhardy of me though.
I think there's been sufficient reaction to my chat message that I realize it was an error.
@DanielSank I'm confused as to how this will constitute evidence when you explicitly refrained from naming the problematic users
@ACuriousMind Yes it was ill thought out. I'm sorry and will shut up now.
Let's just let this one die.
I explained to Danu why it was a tricky situation and I should have just left it alone to begin with.
21:59
lol
It sizzles out!
@DanielSank Okay
But you can/should still custom-flag some specific examples @DanielSank
So at least the mods know what you're on about, specifically.
@Danu Okay
That's a good idea.
Still no answer to my complete metric question.
Well, I got one answer, but it was pretty unhelpful.

A: Every Riemannian metric is conformally related to a complete metric

studiosusOne way to solve this problem is to use Whitney embedding theorem: Embed $M$ in $R^{2n+1}$ via a proper map $i: M\to R^{2n+1}$ so that $0\notin i(M)$. Then the function $h: x\mapsto ||i(x)||$ is a smooth exhaustion function on $M$. (Properness of $i$ translates to the property that $h$ is an exha...
