vzn
23:00
how many yrs did you trade?
Only about 2 actually.
I mean 2 for forex. Been dabbling in stocks since the late 70s.
Still have money in index funds, but that hardly counts.
vzn
vzn
so you havent studied books or other material much to hone your strategy?
@vzn Not really. I just ran numbers through Mathematica.
@vzn It's not really that hard. Honest. It would be easier for me to actually explain it to you.
vzn
vzn
@barrycarter so presumably it involved something like curve fitting?
@vzn Nope :) Just buy USDCAD and make sure you have enough money to survive a drop. Sell covered calls. When calls expire worthless, sell more. If calls expire in money, buy more USDCAD. Repeat.
vzn
vzn
23:03
lol ok
@vzn Actually, my strategy involved some averaging down too, which most people frown on.
vzn
vzn
but where does mathematica come in? accounting? :)
are you in the US?
@vzn Good question actually. It didn't when I was selling vanilla calls with Saxo Bank... at least I don't remember it doing so. Yes, in the USA. With NADEX, the question is: what combination of options to sell to maximize profit while minimizing risk.
vzn
vzn
mathematica is great have dabbled in it... actually bought a copy just for quant analysis (curve fitting) late 1990s...
BTW, I have intentionally scheduled an appointment in about 1/2 hour, so I will have to go.. be forced to go. At last! Yeah!
@vzn Ouch, that must be a fairly old version by now?
vzn
vzn
23:05
yeah! old!
@vzn For the Nadex stuff, I do have to estimate option prices, because the actual prices change every second.... so I set limit orders after I've determined the best combination to sell.
vzn
vzn
sounds like nearly "HFT"...
I have no idea what that is :)
vzn
vzn
high frequency trading, a big buzzword in the media nowadays
Oh yes.
Yes, it is HFT. You know that calls are worth more per time unit the shorter the expiration right?
vzn
vzn
23:08
not too knowledgeable on options, just the basics.
If a 1-day at the money call is worth x, then an n-day at the money call is usually worth Sqrt[n]*x. The increase isn't linear.
vzn
vzn
have read many books on subj, have a pile of unread ("to-read") also...
@vzn I'm not much of a book person myself. I did get a test/fake account on both nadex.com and forex.com before I went in for real.
vzn
vzn
yes understand the time horizons somewhat...
If you think an instrument's price will stay level, sell options as often as you can... allowing for transaction costs, of course.
And with Nadex, as often as possible is hourly.
vzn
vzn
23:11
yes somebody remarked once that options are about "buying and selling volatility" or something like that...
@vzn Sort of true, I guess. But the general idea is that you benefit from theta, the declining value of a short option as time passes.
vzn
vzn
anyway, its cool to run into a successful quant, and a non-secretive one also, both somewhat rare :)
@vzn Yeah, I don't think your volume or my volume will affect anything enough to change the world :)
@vzn Feel free to contact me at [email protected] if you have more questions. I'll tell you my whole method and you can test it.
vzn
vzn
@barrycarter the hardcore quants would disagree, and heck most of em are under NDAs etc
@barrycarter thx BC!
@vzn Yeah, I enjoy quant, but I'm not sure my strategy really qualifies. It's algorithmic, but not that fancy.
vzn
vzn
23:14
fantasized about retiring young, since young :P
@vzn Of course, you could lose all your money and more, so no promises :)
vzn
vzn
to me anything algorithmic is quantitative, although if one doesnt even have to use a computer, thats more human oriented...
Topic: Stocks?
@vzn OK, it turns out my method is linear algebra + slightly modified Black Scholes
@Xylius Forex and options, but fading out methinks
Yeah, it is
vzn
vzn
23:15
its a fascinating problem from a scientific angle re theory of random walks etc... there was a ton of scientific controversy whether a market edge even existed... but now that debate is mostly passed...
have you seen the interview of Simons on youtube? good stuff
@vzn Nope.. I might check it out. The core of my belief is that option buyers are dumb.
No, would be so kind as to provide a link?
Haha, opportunists never do well
For binary options that translates to "out of money option buyers"
vzn
vzn
there are a few circulating, one is 1h, this one is 18m
intelligence in a market is all relative. anyone who loses money is "dumb" so to speak...
@vzn True, but I believe option buyers are "fundamentally dumb" because long calls are a decaying asset.
23:19
Well, not necessarily
vzn
vzn
simons is quite a character, has singlehandedly significantly altered math/ CS research with his foundation/ grants...
Mind you, if everyone agreed with me, things would go horribly wrong.
Haha
tis true for the whole world
I'm going to hunt this guy down and see if he'll give me money :)
@Xylius Yes. Us takers need givers :)
vzn
vzn
nice chatting guys back later...
23:22
And I will probably gone for the day in about 20m.
And then make a serious effort never to return because this place is a timesuck :\
Everything is a time suck when you are hooked
#netflixtookmylife
vzn
vzn
ps a lot of physicists get into finance/ quant... & theres also the interesting area sometimes called "econophysics" / "phynance"... physics + finance... large area...
@Xylius True, but I sense this is somehow even more of a timesuck because you spend more time waiting for people to answer as opposed to something you can do solidly.
@vzn I'm a mathematician dammit :)
vzn
vzn
lol about anyone retired complaining about a "timesuck" :P
employment is the ultimate timesuck :P
Yeah, that's the problem with community chats
23:25
@vzn Until I started chatting in these rooms, I was really bored and had too much time. Now, I'm not even getting laundry or grocery done, and it's only because I forced myself that I've ordered some food.
Plus I don't come away with a sense of accomplishment like I do when I answer a SE question.
vzn
vzn
@barrycarter lol, so we have a new candidate for 0celo7s empty position, poor thing :|
@vzn Is he not coming back? :( I miss the @0celo7
I seriously considered not coming back too... it would really have been the right thing for me to do... sadly, I'm not as smart as I think I am.
vzn
vzn
@barrycarter 30d (chat) suspension. (apparently) "authority problem".
@vzn WOW! I got nailed for 1d + 6h, and was unhappy about it (I agree the mods suck), but not for 30d.
vzn
vzn
to me a lot of fun of chat is mtg smart new ppl.
to paraphase rumsfield:
23:27
@vzn Yes, when that happens, and you're actually talking about something interesting, it totally works. But a lot of time is just jibber-jabber
vzn
vzn
> you go to war with the war you have, not the war you want
> you go to chat with the mods you have, not the mods you want
@vzn I'm still fighting the system from the inside.
vzn
vzn
@barrycarter most mods dont have much issue, fairly lassaiz faire
@vzn Not the ones that blocked me!
vzn
vzn
although have run into some "hard noses" myself on occasion :(
23:29
@vzn It takes just one bad mod to ruin chat.
vzn
vzn
which room?
@vzn This one.
@vzn Well, he was a global SE chat mod.
vzn
vzn
oh didnt notice that in the chat logs (maybe deleted). think you were around when 0celot7 got zapped & you were prob somewhat collateral damage.
@vzn I'd like to agree, but Ocelot and I were telling dirty jokes and we both got nailed. I don't blame him.
vzn
vzn
the mod job is pretty "thxless". have had my own run-ins but also have some sympathy.
23:31
To me, this room's culture is pretty open and I didn't even realize dirty jokes were off limits.
@vzn I think they're tin plated dictators with delusions of godhood.
vzn
vzn
you had the misfortune to "click" with the "room jester" :|
@vzn Actually, I considered him my nemesis :) But it was a pretty funny battle.
vzn
vzn
0celot7 is defn one of the smartest ppl around this site
Yes, but he's also a bit sensitive at times, sometimes surprisingly so.
:29104667
vzn
vzn
23:32
hes also a unadmitted nihilist, and look where it gets him right now... now fully embracing the emptiness/ void so to speak... :P
@vzn Yes. He's joked(?) about committing suicide before. Who knows, the 30 days may prove to be the straw that broke the camel's back.
vzn
vzn
@barrycarter very funny dude at times, but also verging on tasteless/ gallows humor :(
@barrycarter tin plated dictator with delusions of Godhood sounds more like Trump at this point
@vzn Yes. And very sensitive about being an engineer.
vzn
vzn
if he ever gives up on physics he could maybe succeed in comedy... he reminds me somewhat of a young george carlin...
23:34
@Xylius Well, I meant in the SE mod arena. Globally, yes, would agree about Trump.
vzn
vzn
?!? engrs ROCK! :P
Engineers do rock
@vzn Mayyyyyybe ... maybe a comedian for college students in math-like fields.
vzn
vzn
0celot7 has joked about just about everything... incl mods! hence his current purgatory...
Engineers rock, engineers roll... but ultimately, they are inferior to physicists and mathematicians.
23:35
really?
Well, it's an opinion, so I'm not sure 'really" is a valid question.
they use both and create what you drive today.. So I doubt it
@Xylius Yes, but anyone can be an engineer.
vzn
vzn
@barrycarter lol, engrs make the efforts of mathematicians and physicists "not so useless" :P
and mathematicians don't contribute to society, they sit in a Uni office, grow bald and fat
23:36
@vzn Yes, but they "work with their hands". They're commoners.
@Xylius I'm sitting at home, thank you very much :P
haha
Did I say they were useless? If so, I didn't mean it. Just inferior.
vzn
vzn
@barrycarter lol you think the $$$ employees at google or facebook "work with their hands"? yeah right, exactly
working from home isn't a bad thing, what's bad is sitting in a college office and doing nothing
@vzn They aren't engineers!
vzn
vzn
23:37
@barrycarter bzzzzzt
@Xylius Well, I'm retired, so I do nothing while doing nothing.
@vzn OK, you know what I mean when I said engineer, though. That's more computer engineering or virtual engineering.
correction, they are technically, they're called software engineers
Yeah, but prairie dogs aren't dogs.
vzn
vzn
@#%& geez
I meant bridge and road builders, that sort of thing.
Software engineers are much closer to being mathematicians.
I dabble in programming myself.
23:38
@alarge nested sampling (Skilling) is a popular alternative to MCMC in physics
vzn
vzn
@barrycarter cyberspace has a kind of "infrastructure"... hinted at in great movies like tron/ matrix/ social network/ the interns etc
@vzn Yes, but it's all virtual. It's pure. It is not limited by materials.
vzn
vzn
@barrycarter its sort of half physical and half virtual. a kind of hybrid... chimera...
Virtual networks have no limit
Sadly, I am limited by material considerations and must leave. Talk to you all later... assuming I don't gain some self-discipline.
23:40
bellepheron
shall stop Thi chimera
vzn
vzn
out of time too bye subversive troublemaker(s)
bye
Rip chat
@innisfree Interesting, I've never implemented that. Seems like often the central bit of computation is in an MCMC, though (but this would depend on the application I am sure)
