@DanielSank More MK & SF series than SSMB
obe
obe
I play SSMB.
Metaknight only.
@FenderLesPaul Stream over for the night.
Have to get ready for tomorrow.
@0celo7 What's tomorrow?
00:21
@ACuriousMind Work
That means sleep in 2 hours
That means laundry and chores now
You're not even playing PoE
@ACuriousMind If I were to get PoE and start playing now, would I be joining too late?
Is everyone else too OP?
user54412
@0celo7 Part of the fun of PoE is making new builds. Good players are always starting new characters.
@0celo7 Well...you don't directly compete against the others, so no
user54412
^ that too. There's pvp, but it's a small, ignorable part of the game
@ACuriousMind So I don't get the chance to stab you in the back?
And what Chris said, the leagues are still fresh right now (they start new ones every 5 month or so)
00:24
@ChrisWhite Lurk much?
@0celo7 Only if we explicitly do PvP
user54412
@0celo7 Sometimes there are leagues/races that do allow that, but it's not usual.
So what's the gist of the game?
...you probably never played Diablo 2, right? :D
Because that was the game that defined this genre
I remember taking a look at PoE
But I didn't have time, so I didn't go further than looking at it.
user54412
00:26
Kill -> loot -> level. Also trade in an economy hindered by lack of liquid currency.
Trading is just a horrible, I avoid it generally
@KyleKanos Watch any EVO?
@DanielSank Only for most of the weekend :D
@ACuriousMind I don't play satanic games...*crosses*
user54412
@ACuriousMind I don't have the time to monitor it. I also don't have anything worth trading :(
00:27
@KyleKanos Indeed. The Melee scene has gotten incredibly big.
Two years ago I didn't even know there was a scene, and I thought my friend was the best player on the planet.
@DanielSank Yeah, SSMB has a good following. It's always been a decent series
@ChrisWhite My ranger is slowly getting to the point where stuff might become tradable...I fear facing the act 4 bosses on Cruel, though
@KyleKanos By SSMB you mean SSBM, yes?
Also, by "a descent" you mean "the best".
@DanielSank Er, yes. Yes it should be SSBM
@KyleKanos and you mean that SSBM is the best, right?
00:29
@DanielSank The platform & shoot-out thing just doesn't click in my head. Perhaps f I played it, I'd get it. But as it stands I'm a spectator
So best, no.
@KyleKanos I see.
user54412
@ACuriousMind Did you get through Act 4 normal before the nerf hotfix? That was hard.
How is it that you manage to be wrong about octopuses and video games?
2
^ That's a joke.
@0celo7 Trying to give a gist: It's an addictive clickfest where you'll hit a brick wall of difficulty if you didn't build your character properly :D
@DanielSank Wrong is subjective here
00:31
@KyleKanos Joking. Anyway, yeah the flying off the stage thing is really different. The raising % thing is also really different.
@ChrisWhite I think I got there after the fix and still died ~25 times against Malachai
Interestingly, it's the fact that you fly farther and farther as your damage % goes up that makes the combo system so rich. The combos available at any time depend on how hurt your opponent is.
@DanielSank Yes, that's just lost on me. If you hit 100%, you should be KO'd or easily shot out. Someone in the finals went to like 170%
@KyleKanos Yeah, they could call it something other than % I guess.
Just read "%" as "damage".
Piety wasn't that hard after I accepted that, yes, you really have to run in the same circles for the entire fight :P
00:33
It's good to see that block isn't free anymore on games like SF & MK
@KyleKanos it's just an abuse of notation. As a physicist you should be comfortable with that.
user54412
@0celo7 Try to build an awesome character. You can count on ~80 points to spend easily enough.
@KyleKanos Yeah, this was the first time I saw MK. That was interesting. Soulcalibur had something like this if I remember...
Sonicfox was amazing in the finales
@KyleKanos I don't follow that scene at all, but I got that impression when I saw the final game.
@KyleKanos Again, I don't follow any of this (except Melee) so I have what may be a dumb question: why isn't Soulcalibur in these events?
I remember that game being incredibly rich.
00:37
I do not actually know, but I cannot imagine ~1000 people showing up and not playing SCV on the side
Time to clip Einstein's claws...wish me luck.
From the Falskaar quest mod:
Einstein claw hotfix is live. Minimal casualties among the dev team.

2 hours later…
02:24
Lol...PR Balrog just took 7th place at Evo. Commentator said Great finish for a guy who's claimed he's retired.

1 hour later…
03:40
@0celo7 are you still in Falskaar?

2 hours later…
05:50
wb @0celo7
06:20
Too hot to sleep?

2 hours later…
08:18
You know the atomic age has officially arrived to the Internet when someone does this^ to chess :(
You, you...gamers!
The next game will be played with sticks and stones.

3 hours later…
11:31
If someone is bored, they could read my writeup of the Randall-Sundrum model and notify me of errors or typos ;)
12:16
@ACuriousMind I got you bro
What are the prereqs?
@0celo7 Ehhh...that's a bit unclear, but nothing above basic QFT, I guess.
@ACuriousMind I'll give it a perusing when I get back to the office
Is "quantum mechanics is a lie" a valid objection?
12:39
@ACuriousMind On page one, you need to fix the "" around finely tuned
@ACuriousMind "latin" is preferable over "roman"
Hello everyone, I never really understood the meta for the SE networks as far as what topics are more suited for posted questions and what topics as chat questions. I have a pretty specific question regarding interpreting the output of a torsional vibration analysis program that I'm not making any sense out of - is this an appropriate place to inquire, and if it is, is there anyone willing to help me make sense out of a jumble of numbers? Thanks!
@ACuriousMind Also isn't the EoM for a scalar field the covariant wave operator?
@ACuriousMind I thought the EoM for a scalar field had $m^2$ on the RHS, meaning your (4) really has mass $n/R$.
@ACuriousMind $\mathrm{Ri}$? Eww, what's wrong with $\mathcal{R}$?
This is manifestly bad haha
@Jimself How's Canadia today?
12:56
@0celo7 We're happy
@Jimself You reading ACM's paper?
@0celo7 Nope, I've ben away for the last 4 days. I didn't know it was out
It's not a paper
It's a "presentation" or something
He calls it a "writeup", it's linked above.
Then you confused me by calling it a paper
Well, if you print it, it's paper :D
12:58
::eye twitch::
3
^agreed
@ACuriousMind I don't understand what (16) has to do with the perturbation...I don't see the perturbation in that equation
Is it implicitly included in the 4-dimensional things?
@ACuriousMind Right under eq. (21), you need to put a space between "of" and "the"

Q: If traveling at the speed of lights stops time, why does it take light 8 minutes to reach earth?

Mathias Van der bremptI just learned that, according to Einstein's relativity theory, time reaches zero for an observer (light) when traveling at the speed of light, because everything is at the same place in the universe. But why does it take 8 minutes for light to travel from the sun to earth? Is it because we are o...

That's better than this rant:

Q: Did we get near Pluto with our current technology?

GrasperI was sent from Skeptic to here. We all know that NASA has successfully carried out the mission for getting near Pluto. More here. It is very difficult for me to accept that we already have the technology necessary to transmit data in such a distances. They transmit data over a billion miles an...

One word: money
"I don't believe we can do open heart surgery in space when people in Africa are still dying of malaria"
@KyleKanos correct me if I'm wrong, but only one of the Voyager probes went farther than New Horizons
The other detoured around Saturn and didn't get to complete the grand tour of the solar system
13:10
I thought 2 passed Pluto?
I know it wasn't aimed to go further like 1 was
But I thought it at least passed Pluto
oh, you're right. My mistake
Yeah, the Wiki page shows it at 100 AU in 2012
Oh, and Pioneer 10 is at 107 AU in 2012 as well
So I missed another important one in that list ;)
where did you get the 2012 numbers? Wikipedia shows me the 2015 numbers
Canadia wiki is best wiki
Voyager 2 is a 722 kg (1,592 lb) space probe launched by NASA on August 20, 1977 to study the outer Solar System and eventually interstellar space. It was actually launched before Voyager 1, but Voyager 2 was sent on a different trajectory and arrived at Jupiter and Saturn after Voyager 1. Voyager 2 has been operating for 37 years, 10 months and 25 days as of 15 July 2015, and the Deep Space Network is still receiving its data transmissions. At a distance of 108 AU (1.62×1010 km) from the Sun as of April, 2015, it is one of the most distant man-made objects (along with Voyager 1, Pioneer 10 and...
Should be a direct link to the Interstellar Mission section
13:13
The first paragraph gives the 2015 numbers
Who reads the first paragraph?
everyone
I wonder if someone has made an image of the location of all the major solar-system explorer satellites, sorta like this one:
{everyone} - kyle kanos
Except with all the satellites in them
13:15
That'd be cool. I'm sure it's out there
what's the heliosphere?
Sphere made by Sun's magnetic field
Protects us from harmful cosmic radiation
@0celo7 A bubble really. Contains the solar system, solar wind & magnetic field
Not really a sphere, more like a spherically capped tube
Like magnetosphere of Earth
@Jimself the sun loves us, awwww
too bad it will kill us all when it goes all "yandere black hole mode" on us
@0celo7 No, it just hates us less than the other stuff that doesn't orbit it
Without Magnetosphere of Earth, Sun would kill us
@0celo7 ....fortunately it won't actually do that
Earth loves us
@KyleKanos Saw that. It's not as nice as you're looking for
@Jimself Correct, not as nice, but it's a start at least
And I changed the link to a higher resolution one
@KyleKanos of course it will, did you even watch interstellar
everyone knows a black hole eats everything
13:21
@0celo7 I did see Interstellar. I did not see our sun turn into a black hole in that movie though.
@KyleKanos I never watched it, don't have a clue what happened.
Well go find a Redbox & rent it for $1.25
@0celo7 yes, that's true
@0celo7 yeah, the 4D Ricci is that of the perturbation (the Ricci of the unperturbed one vanishes, after all)
@ACuriousMind ah yes
@0celo7 :)
@0celo7 thanks
13:33
@ACuriousMind Maybe you know this, but quotation marks in TeX are ``"
That curves the first set properly.
i.e. use backticks
In theory I know that, in practice I forget it every time :D
@ACuriousMind Just reminding you then!
@ACuriousMind I'm still concerned about the 5-d wave equation. Why partials and not covariant derivatives?
@0celo7 I tend to agree with you, but my sources for KK write partials. I will investigate this when I get home
What was Trump thinking with that McCain comment...
What? Saying that is he is a war hero 3 or 4 times?
13:50
Well, I guess he didn't say the converse, but it sure seems like it.
> "He is a war hero because he was captured," Trump said. "I like people that weren't captured, OK?"
22 in the close queue
@0celo7 He's a jerk because he judges people based on whether enemy combatants captured them. I like people that don't do that, OK?
Sigh
@0celo7 It's not well phrased, but he's basically saying that he doesn't want to risk soldiers, no?
"the coset is not a subgroup" lol
@KyleKanos I don't think he released a statement clarifying as such.
He did say:
> Captured or not, all our soldiers are heroes!
13:56
@KyleKanos That's not what I got from it. Saying he likes people that weren't captured implies that he doesn't like people that were captured. This is a judgement against soldiers based on something beyond their control.
@Jimself I like people that didn't fight, OK? :)
@Jimself What's the one sentence explanation for why we have no torsion in GR?
So the geodesic equation arises from an action?
@0celo7 Minimize $s$
@0celo7 I don't believe there is a "one" sentence explanation. But Carroll covers it pretty well in his book
@0celo7 It is equivalent to the existence of locally inertial frames
@Jimself ^^
13:59
@Jimself I can see that, but I don't think that was his intent.
> Many people get captured. They are brave men because they are in the field ... I like the people who don't get captured, and I respect the people that do get captured - Trump
That's more of a full quote than what's being passed around
@Jimself Do you know where?
@KyleKanos It's definitely better in context, but he should clarify what he means by "like". It'd be better if it were "I like it when people don't get captured"
@Jimself Agreed. But much of "The Donald's" statements could use more clarification.
@0celo7 I suppose I could grab the book and take a look, but it's around where he introduces $T_{\mu\nu}$ I think
@0celo7 Also, Carroll doesn't cover this I think (that it's equiv. to LIF's)
I remember it being new to me when I heard it in Mukhanov's lecture even though I'd already read Carroll's book

Q: Why can we assume torsion is zero in GR?

JamalSThe first Cartan equation is $$\mathrm{d}\omega^{a} + \theta^{a}_{b} \wedge \omega^{b} = T^{a}$$ where $\omega^{a}$ is an orthonormal basis, $T^{a}$ is the torsion and $\theta^{a}_{b}$ are the connections. In Misner, Thorne and Wheeler, as well as several lectures in GR using the Cartan formali...

@KyleKanos reading that
@KyleKanos bonus points for finding it on this site
Answer says, essentially, so that we get GR
I always forget to check here first
I just searched torsion [general-relativity] and it was one of the top hits
14:08
@Danu mind explaining it then
@0celo7 I would have to look back through my notes from the course. I could do it tonight
cool
It was not something all too difficult, just a neat little insight AFAIk
if I find it again, I'll actually post it as an answer to the question as well
@Jimself I'd appreciate it, I'm looking right now
@0celo7 Might take me a bit, but I'll check it out
14:18
@Danu Why do I work for the government? It gives me an excuse to wear suits.
@0celo7 Yuck, that'd be a reason for me not to work somewhere!
No wonder Einstein's thought experiment of riding on a light-beam never made it into the school books.

@Danu How many times have you worn a full suit in your life?
(Also it looks better on my resume than "shelf stocker".)
@0celo7 between 5 and 10 times?
@Danu That's enough to appreciate how comfy they are. You're one of the failed ones :(
14:22
Have you ever tried to run with one on? Or stretch out?
You're one of the stuck up ones ;)
4
Yeah, I'm doing a lot of spontaneous running.
Screw you star person + star person # 2
@Danu A properly fitted and tailored suit is easy to stretch out in. I don't want to be forced to wear one, but I understand why @0celo7 enjoys wearing them
@0celo7 stop insulting the astronomers
4
Sticks and stones...
stars will never hurt me
14:26
@Jimself A properly fitted and tailored suit is easily more expensive than most of my clothes combined, all of which are comfortable and easy to stretch out in.
@Danu But the suit looks better than most of your clothes combined :D
I guarantee if you put on most of your clothes, the suit wins
You'd look ridiculous
@Danu Yeah, that's the drawback. Stupid money being needed to get most things worth having
Every girl loves a sharp dressed
Man
this is Danu
he wears most of his clothes at once
14:29
@0celo7 it is star person # 3 now :D
Every girl loves a man sharp enough to realize he doesn't need to waste his money on suits ^^
Not every girl loves men :P
5
screw you star persons #1, #2 and #3
@ACuriousMind Pff, lesbians aren't real
@0celo7 They just do it for the porn, right?
@Danu Exactly!
14:31
And we love them for that
Sigh...I don't even know where to start with that exchange.
@0celo7 I know a few scary ones that would heartily disagree
@Jimself Bring them on. Fake lesbians aren't tough.
(Note the tautology.)
@ACuriousMind oh cmon now
So, every girl loves a sharp dressed man, but not every girl loves men therefore Socrates is mortal?
:D
14:35
what is going on? Today, everyone is using the worst logic I've seen. Have I gone crazy?
Yeah
I forgot about $\tau$
@Danu u wot m8
@KyleKanos Ah yes, girls who use $\tau$ over $\pi$ are the closest things to lesbians that occur naturally
@KyleKanos Yeah, that would have been better
I must be retarded. I cannot fathom why for a hypersurface defined by $f(x)=const.$ $\nabla f$ is a normal vector
14:39
@0celo7 the derivative in the directions the function is constant vanishes
ignore that
move along citizens
Lolololol
we all have those moments
@0celo7 sh*t I missed that :D
14:42
Not that funny
:-)
your face isn't that funny
hmm, that's not even a comeback
that's actually something desirable
ACM died
rip
Who's "ACM"?
@skillpatrol ACuriousMind
I couldn't allow that typo to stay in chat history :D
14:48
what was it
someone snitch
the kitty demands it
@0celo7 shoo I'm allergic to cats :D
you're allergic to the lord incarnate?
In Murrica we'd burn you for that.
@0celo7 muricans should instead learn to burn some calories
@gonenc wow
@0celo7 was that too harsh :D :D :D
14:52
I even had spinach on my sandwich this morning
But the grill guy gave me regular bacon instead of turkey bacon because we were chatting
@0celo7 you really shouldn't eat the food of your food :D
My dad always said old German folk won't eat corn on the cob because that's cow food
I never witnessed that in my time there
@0celo7 I live again!
oh thank god
Praise Jesus!
@0celo7 he probably went to loo.
14:57
@gonenc lol
I had a BEC this morning.
Bacon, egg, and cheese
More calories than the average German daily intake
@0celo7 I've never seen anyone eat corn on the cob here, really
@0celo7 it is a real shame that we don't have bacon here :/
@ACuriousMind it is fun to do so though
I would have preferred turkey, ham or sausage.
Bacon has a shitty food/calorie ratio
