Q: Are StackExchange sites good pedagogical tools and, if so, how can we promote them?

Q: Can we add chat oneboxing support for arXiv preprints?

Kyle KanosSE chat has a great previewer for non-SE links like Wikipedia, For those that are not familiar with arXiv, it is a website/service the hosts pre-print editions of articles in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Quantitative Biology, Quantitative Finance and Statistics. :( Still nothing

+1 from <--

Yay!

I just got a high res blood texture mod for Skyrim. Hope it doesn't nuke my fps in battle.
I now have 25 Skyrim mods.
It will take the rest of the evening to figure out how to make them all work together.
Skyrim doesn't work now.

12:56 AM
You keep breaking your games. You should stop doing that.
2

So the crashing was simply because I was installing 20 mods at once.
Now everything is installed, but there are conflicts.
Btw, the blood mod is amazing and does not seem to slow performance.
I need to patch SkyRe, but it won't let me because I haven't installed this other thing. Problem is, I did install it and it works.
Urgh, I downloaded a mod manager that is supposed to inform me of conflicts and it's telling me everything is dandy! But shit doesn't work!
I got some of it to work!
Skyrim is working perfectly.
Skyrim is like Schroedinger's cat now. It's in a very fragile superposition of working perfectly and consider reinstalling.
Hookers in Skyrim.

1:27 AM
Doesn't surprise me.

@KyleKanos It's a mod.
Rather, part of a larger NPC mod.
8.02 != 8.02 ??

Probably a mistake, 8.03 maybe? Could be 8.02.1 vs 8.02.0

2:25 AM
@KyleKanos I'm adding two DLC-sized mods now.

2:37 AM
39 mods now.

2:57 AM
The unofficial patch really patched it :(
lol @ FRAPS giving me an fps counter in iTunes

3:13 AM
Hi guys
We got many here?
How about anyone?

I'm here, but doing things.

You probably don't want to talk to me then.. I'm kinda drunk - and philosophical - and curious.. thought I might try and crack AI once and for all before bed, but then decided it might be good to talk it over with some knowledgeable people ;)

Crack...AI?
We're Physics people, not theoretical Comp Sci.

does it need to be comp sci?
reverse engineering the brain doesn't have to be related to computeres
argh.. computers*

@Alfie It has little to nothing to do with physics.

3:21 AM
well, the brain is a physical object, which obeys the laws of physics, would you disagree?

And just because a liver obeys the laws of physics, we know how to fix cirrhosis?
3

by the way, I'm genuinely here to ask semi-thoughtful (and related) questions, I'm not trying to just be 'controversial' or argumentative

You're in the wrong place for an AI discussion is all I'm saying.

and no, I didn't say (or mean to imply) that, at all

Skyrim, supercomputers, string theory, etc. are common topics here.

3:23 AM
ok - I'm sorry if so. But if you have an interest in science, won't you at least entertain the conversation for a short while?

@Alfie Sure.

cool :)

Waiting on a 2GB torrent anyway.

ok, well, I am starting from the assumption that the brain is a physical object (devoid of a magical soul), and at least theoretically, it would be possible to recreate it
given it's just electrical signals and lots of neurons etc....

Seems reasonable.

3:27 AM
ok.. my next reasoning is to propose that as seemingly complex as the brain is, fundamentally, 'consciousness' or abstract thinking is a result of many different sets of rules

Ok

ok - so a simple illustration would be the pavlovian dog effect. dog, or human, we respond to positive reinforcement
if your dad belts you, you learn not to do it again.. if you get a gold star, you try harder
primitive, but pretty much undisputable

Yes

again, you can easily identify rules for language.. of course..

it's harder than you might imagine
try finding one for how music works.

3:30 AM
What if you're a masochist and you enjoy the belting?

i'd be interested in it.

yes, for sure... they are complex rules with many caveats, but based on rules nevertheless

@0celo7 lololol

That breaks your rules.

no not really..
because if that's the case, there are still some 'rules' that govern and make you 'like' S&M
lol

3:31 AM
That's not a scientific claim "rules nonetheless." You have to prove that

no I don't, you're right
I'm only hypothesising
I'm making a set of assumptions to try and test, I suppose
and honestly, I don't really expect any 'answer' from this, I just wanted the discussion lol
essentially, what is the difference between Clever Bot, and a real conversation?
what is the /actual/ difference between knowing and understanding
btw Stan - if it is not based on rules, may I ask for a counter-proposal?

63 mods!
This game is completely different now.
I've replaced most of the textures, redone all of the weapons, spells, and armor. Sound is completely overhauled. NPC AI is completely redone. Hundreds of new NPCs have been added.
I've added 50 hours worth of quest mods.

4:10 AM
@Alfie It all depends on what you consider a rule.
For example, chess is a game played by rules.
The pieces can only take on specific positions.
But decision making in the brain is thought to be probabilistic.
So, a set of dice follows rules too but that doesn't mean it is predictable.
So I guess I am trying to clarify what you mean by "rule."
@Alfie I also think specifying the domain and people you read is helpful in the sense that, in my experience, different areas of neuroscience, psychology, linguistics, and philosophy all have different standards for what they consider evidence.

I manged to get to the dark side of Nexus mods
Killing children, nudity mods
Yeesh

1 hour later…
5:23 AM
@Alfie The difference between Clever Bot and actual conversation is that Clever Bot's linguistic programming is consistent and known, and our linguistic programming is inconsistent and unknown.
@Alfie i.e. Clever Bot follows rules and we do not, in the practical sense. You could call an individual's mind structure a set of rules, I suppose, but in the common sense, rules are equally applicable to all members of a set, which individual psychology is not.

2 hours later…
7:55 AM
@Alfie Easy; For exapmle a car. "Knowing" is that you know it's color, that it's made of steel, has four wheels, it's engine has certain power. etc. understanding is that you understand, that now matter what's the colour, model Year or power. The only thing you can use it, is to transport you and your things from A to B, so if understand, then the most important thing to you, is that there is fuel in tank. All the rest is just details.
and the worst thing in "understanding" is that it cant' be given or Teach'd. No matter how much knowledge I share you, It won't help you to understand, cause it's thinking process which must be done by your self. As you see, even the most important thing "fuel in tank", is a detail too, and doesn't help actually either. The battery can be empty too, and dozen other things, which you don't actually even need to know, to be able to understand.

10:11 AM
@KyleKanos I know, it basically shows the overwhelming superiority of linux! :P

Hi, I would like to discuss a couple papers I wrote groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/sci.econ/ooKzebUsDaI

@0celo7 we should put it on meta: talking about AI is off-topic in chat
@Alfie in clever bot I feel like I'm talking to a retard, in general I talk to people, who are not that retarded.
↑ this gotta be a record

1 hour later…
11:57 AM
@gonenc ...for that purpose.

@gonenc Nothing is off-topic in chat

^^

@ACuriousMind I know :D

@ACuriousMind You missed 4 hours of modding last night.
70+ mods in Skyrim
Everything works.

@0celo7 I had a few hours of drinking instead :D
@0celo7 That's...amazing!

11:59 AM
@ACuriousMind So did I!

No frequent crashes?

@ACuriousMind Well, I have some issues with ReProccer.
And my game freezes when I boot it up...(it works eventually)
Sadly, my 3 second loading screens are gone.
Actually it might be only 65 mods. I de-activated some I didn't like.
@ACuriousMind My biggest worry right now is that whenever I run ReProccer, it says the "Unofficial Dawnguard Patch" is missing the master "Unofficial Skyrim Patch". But, as you can see above, the Khajit chest in Dawnstar is patched, so the USKP is installed and works...

@0celo7 Are they in the right order?

My solution it to uninstall the Unofficial Patches, run ReProccer, then install them.
@ACuriousMind Yes, I got a load order sorter just to be sure.

I.e. is every patch loaded directly after the master it modifies?

12:08 PM
I never tried simply restarting the PC. I guess it's worth a try.
@ACuriousMind

Well, looks as if it should work. No idea what problem ReProccer has. You could report it as a bug, probably

Not very specific...
It's like when a physics books says: "See this 600 page monograph for a proof"
Also, I have no clue if SkyRe is properly patched with the creature and spells mod.
I'm pinning Skyrim mod utilities to my taskbar, lol

12:23 PM
@0celo7 It seems you need larger text mods for your mod utility :D

:D
Uber nerd: squinting at screen, modding a fantast RPG
That contrast.
At least the red X is readably big...

@0celo7 I have a feeling that you do have slight doubts, but are going to ignore this warning :D

@ACuriousMind It didn't work :/
o.O I did it
I am literally a genius.
I am at the level of a 2011 PC nerd.
Where have you been??

12:45 PM
Gnnnh...I hate ambiguous notation: Is $(1/2\xi)A$ supposed to be $\frac{1}{2}\xi A$ or $\frac{1}{2\xi}A$?

dunno

No
$A$ is some matrix, but the $\xi$ is a normalization parameter
Now I have to backtrack and find out whether it normalizes the matrix correctly by dividing or multiplying...sigh...
Should be division...why don't they either use \frac or make an additional bracket there?

@ACuriousMind I think I have 15GB mods installed :D
@ACuriousMind There's an "Unofficial SkyRe patch"...

@0celo7 That sounds as if you could recurse a few more steps into mod and patches and unofficial patches :D

I'm downloading a good dozen patches that I didn't have before
So many mods...

1:24 PM
trololololo

1:42 PM
@obe can you ping me when you solve carroll 3rd chapter exercise 6b I can't get the constant of proportionality right

Damn, this program executes and then just stops at a seemingly random point in a loop without an error.

@ACuriousMind Stops or, as is more likely, is just going through an infinite loop? What programming language are you using anyway?

@alarge I have to use C
Hm, there's only one loop there that could possibly not terminate.
Yep, that's it. The supposedly "quickly terminating algorithm" doesn't terminate...

1:59 PM
@obe got it right now but in any case it would be nice to compare :D

@ACuriousMind Why the "have to"?

@alarge It's a project for a course, and they want us to use C, not sure if there's any deeper reason than the lecturer's preference.
Gnnnh...if this would throw an error when I get inf or nan as the result of an operation instead of doing...*something* I'd have found the cause of this weird behaviour earlier

Well, you can add asserts to check for them. C just does what you tell it to do with few safety features.

2:33 PM
Noooooo...damn you, C, for making % the remainder and not the modulo operator

1 hour later…
3:53 PM
What going on at this question? Neither the question nor any of its seven (!) answers have any upvotes!

@ACuriousMind one of them has a downvote though

4:34 PM
@ACuriousMind Inertial users might find it boring.

obe
@gonenc ok, though currently I'm trying to get diamond league in starcraft II.

@obe lol, that's what I did ~4 years ago :D

5:07 PM
tfw need glasses
It's confirmed, I'm blind as a bat

obe
@0celo7 what is your lens number?

@obe -.5 on one eye

obe
@ACuriousMind did you finally get diamond though?
@0celo7 -.5 is blind?

@obe It is for me

@obe Yes, my ranking stabilized somewhere in the middle of a diamond league.

obe
5:10 PM
You should be able to read all but the last row (or last 2) in an eye exam.

@obe yes
Blind.

@0celo7 ffs one of my eyes is like 6 and the other is 3!
you should ask me what blind is

@gonenc 3rd world sucks

i cannot read chat without my glasses and I have myopia

I'm dilated right now
I can barely read

obe
5:11 PM
My eyes are weird, I used to be -1.75 both eyes, now I'm 0 both eyes.
My doctor said my eyes changed shaped as I became older.
lol, I feel blind if I wear my old glasses.

@obe is it just me or do you also think that lol looks like a person waving their hands up, like the o is the head an l's are the arms?
in a cheerful way of course

obe
lol
@ACuriousMind how long did you play?

ACM probably got it in 10 hours

5:28 PM
How do the pass from $m dv/dt$ to $\dot m \Delta v$ in en.wikipedia.org/wiki/…? Ok, I understand that $\dot m$ is a section of water in the expanding pipe and it is a constant. But why acceleration is $\Delta v = v (v_1 - v_2)$? What is that?

@obe Till I got to diamond? About three months I think, but I'm not sure, it's too long ago
Aug 5 '14 at 17:21, by ACuriousMind
Does anyone else see a guy excitedly raising his arms into the air when someone writes " lol "? I can't unsee it.

@ACuriousMind glad I'm not the only one :D lol

That's what I see

@KyleKanos nah it is more like an excited person saying hurrah

@gonenc Don't tell me what I see, brah!

5:35 PM
@KyleKanos lol

obe
@ACuriousMind Impressive, I think. I've played 3 days and I'm silver.

@gonenc I'll take a look at that once Skyrim works again.

@0celo7 I did get it right at the end, though I'm not 100% sure if my answer is correct

I'm 0% sure I'm modding Skyrim correctly.
I have 4 mod utilities running right now.

@0celo7 why do you mod so much

5:41 PM
@gonenc I've played vanilla for 400+ hours

@0celo7 any you still play?!
skyrim aint so much fun imo
btw I had to look for the word vanilla
50
A: What does "vanilla" mean in the context of gaming?

Colin FineI've never encountered this use, but I'll hazard a guess. "Vanilla" in the computer world means a basic version of something, without any special features or customisations (from its use for no-flavour ice cream). I presume this means "since there was only one kind of WoW".

obe
starcraft II is the best game right?

@obe I haven't played it but I'd go with dark souls as I've told many times :D

obe
I'll read books after I'm top of silver league.

@obe Ocarina of Time is widely regarded as the best video game ever
Also one of the most broken video games ever too

5:49 PM
@KyleKanos how about tetris?

obe
@KyleKanos Cave Story is regarded as the best video game ever.

@gonenc Probably not a top-10 game

@KyleKanos I don't like it much but you should see a tetris-addict defending tetris being the bestest game ever

@obe Not in any list I've seen. Perhaps there's some guy whose list includes it, but there's little chance it makes it above other classics
Chrono Trigger, Super Metroid, Half Life 2 are probably in the Top 5

obe
;<

5:53 PM
@KyleKanos take a look at this
This is a list of video games that have sold or shipped at least one million copies on a single platform (unless otherwise noted). == All platforms == === Multi-platform === === Single-platform === == Consoles == === Bundled games === === Atari === ==== Atari 2600 ==== === Coleco === ==== ColecoVision ==== === Mattel === ==== Intellivision ==== === Microsoft === ==== Xbox ==== ==== Xbox 360 ==== This video game-related list is an incomplete list, which may never be able to satisfy particular standards for completeness. You can help by it with reliably sourced ...

Oh yea, Wii Fit is the 2nd best game ever!

best selling != best

@KyleKanos though correct it may give an objective definition of best

No, far from it

cause how else do you define the word best

5:54 PM
Best is clearly not objective.

Tetris was released in what, 1982?
Comparing something that's been around for 30+ years to something that's been around for 10 is a horrendous marker

@KyleKanos that one that sold 100m was released in 2006
but the original in 1984

The only way to truly judge it is to do statistical sampling

@KyleKanos like a true data analyst :D
how do we do that

Get a list of Top Ten Best Games from ~5k people, 20 pts for 1, 18 for 2, on down to 2 for 10.

5:57 PM
@ACuriousMind You busy? I think I need tech support.

Then add up the scores from the games, the one with the most points wins

@KyleKanos I don't know 5k people do you? :D

There's about 50 million people registered on PSN
Similarly for XBL

Over 70 mods now.
I'm insane.

You're an insane genius :)

6:13 PM
@0celo7 Kinda...no time for a dedicated support session, at least

@ACuriousMind I need to brainstorm a bit.
The game runs, at least.
I just have no clue how to check that all this patching actually did anything.

Well that I don't know either - you're in deeper mod territory now than I ever was

At least the graphics mods were easy to see if they made a difference...I have no idea how to tell if these combat overhauls do anything.
I guess I just have to play and if everything makes sense, yay?

2 hours later…
8:34 PM
@ACuriousMind What mouse do you use for gaming and what's a good, affordable mouse that you recommend?
I would like to have some more mouse buttons.

@0celo7 I've been using a Speedlink Kudos Mouse for years now. It has two easily reachable buttons for your thumb and adjustable DPI
And it just...feels right in my hand, but that's very subjective, I suspect

@0celo7 I had one like this: razerzone.com/gaming-mice/razer-imperator
I didn't like more than two buttons near my thumb
But those two buttons were great for chat & weapon swap

@KyleKanos $80 is out of my price range.

Wasn't outta mine when I played CSS

Unrelated question: is there a way to make the Windows task bar smaller?
@KyleKanos OK, I could afford it, but I wouldn't be happy about it.

8:42 PM
@0celo7 Doesn't click & drag work?

@KyleKanos No.

@0celo7 Mine lasted like 3-4 years.
@0celo7 Is the task bar locked?

@KyleKanos There is no option to grab it.

Right click on it
Uncheck "Lock Task Bar"
Hover over bar until you see the double-arrow size-changing thing
Resize
Recheck the "Lock Task Bar"

It's already the smallest :(

8:45 PM
Change resolution

Found a setting to make the icons smaller.
Too small.
Ah, there is a setting to hide it.
@ACuriousMind A German mouse?
How do I test out some mice to see how they fit in my hand?
Are there mice stores?

@0celo7 No idea, it's this one

@ACuriousMind I found that same page :D
I only found it on Amazon.de, hence my comment.
@KyleKanos How does the Chrome stack up against your mouse? These specs mean nothing to me.

I don't use a mouse since I quit gaming ~6 years ago
Touchpad only
So no clue the specs

The nub thingie?
@ACuriousMind Can you translate mouse specs?

8:51 PM
No, not the nub mouse
The actual touchpad

Uh, a trackpad?
I love my rMPB's trackpad on OSX, but Win 8 doesn't work well with it.
Yet, I find myself using Windows more than OSX nowadays.

@0celo7 What part of them? I already told you the buttons, what more do you want to know?

@ACuriousMind What is this dpi business for one?
3400 dpi less but $10 more.

@0celo7 Well, dpi are "dots per inch", they tell you how much the cursor moves on the screen when you move the mouse on the desk
It's good to have them adjustable, imo, since you might need fast and precise movement in the same game

@0celo7 Yes, that's a touchpad

@KyleKanos No, it's a trackpad...
@ACuriousMind I think both are adjustable.
"On-the-Fly Sensitivity adjustment"
Ah, the $10 more one has 7 buttons it seems.

For the HP product, see HP TouchPad. A touchpad /ˈtʌtʃpæd/ or trackpad /ˈtrækpæd/ is a pointing device featuring a tactile sensor, a specialized surface that can translate the motion and position of a user's fingers to a relative position on the operating system that is outputted to the screen. Touchpads are a common feature of laptop computers, and are also used as a substitute for a mouse where desk space is scarce. Because they vary in size, they can also be found on personal digital assistants (PDAs) and some portable media players. Wireless touchpads are also available as detached accessories...
Trackpad is another name for the name Touchpad

The Magic Trackpad is a multi-touch trackpad produced by Apple Inc. Announced on July 27, 2010, it is similar to the trackpad found on the current MacBook family of laptops, albeit 80% larger. The trackpad is fully compatible with Macintosh computers running Mac OS X Snow Leopard versions 10.6.4 and higher with a software update, as well as Windows 7, Windows XP, and Windows Vista in Apple's Boot Camp with an added device driver. It is also capable of performing in a basic capacity when paired with a Windows computer or a Macintosh without the necessary software. Ubuntu Linux computers can ...
I do not have a touchpad.

@0celo7 That's not attached to the computer...

8:59 PM
@KyleKanos It's the same thing on the laptop, just attached.

And it's called a touchpad then

No.
@KyleKanos The Imperator does look good...
Why do people think mechanical keyboards are necessary for gaming?

@0celo7 No idea, mine isn't mechanical

I just use store.apple.com/us/product/MC184LL/B/…, it came free with something.
4chan is offline D:

2 hours later…
11:16 PM
@ACuriousMind The game is very stable - not a single crash while playing. However, it takes a few times to actually get it loaded up, I go straight to desktop after the Bethesda logo disappears.

11:54 PM
I'm almost going to be back in chat more!

@Danu Exams nearly over, or what's been keeping you?

Yeah, exams and the girl :)
Friday I've got my two hardest exams and then one more six days after that
'n' that'll be it

Going back to Amsterdam in the free time?
