Q: The JWST - What happens if/when it breaks?

David DelMonteThe James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) project could be fantastic, It has the promise of seeing farther than Hubble, almost to the beginning of our space/time. But, orbiting at L2 - while closer by far than other LaGrange points - is still 1.5m KM away from Earth. That is four times more distant ...

So any one here?
Yup.

just for fun,
My question WAS a conceptual question, I didn't care about actual calculations. Maybe instead of just trying to make it appear that my question was wrong, how about you just take in what I said and accept it? Because what I describe never happens, right? You are sooooo smart (not really). You can't just accept a statement, you have to artificially invent reasons why it could not possibly be so. You seem to be caught in your own perceived importance as self-declared guardians of some random who-cares web forum. Get a life. — Mörre 2 days ago
(He's talking about Phys.SE)
(Don't comment there)
Do you guys still remember that funny question on whether things exist? lol
So, is the event usually this empty?
@JamalS It's been pretty quiet the last couple of months or so. The "official" chat sessions used to be a bit busier. I think there are just fewer pressing things to discuss.
Yeah
We sort of sorted out the homework policy and all that
And things are going nicely. On the most part
16:04
Is there anything to discuss?
I know I haven't really be keeping up with the more recent chat sessions the way I used to.
Chocolate?
me either, been really busy this summer
I have a programming question... ?
go ahead
Do you know how I can access the data from thermal sensors using Intel x86-64 Assembly? I assume I'll probably need to enter real mode for it.
16:06
no clue
probably have to use the IN or OUT commands
Ah, just found some documentation from Intel: "CPU Monitoring with DTC/PECI." They suggest RDMSR, which is only available in real mode. Can you enter real mode without the kernel stopping you?
no clue
I'll be in and out of the chat today
PS we could always talk about the World Cup if there's nothing else ;-)
haha
/me doesn't follow it
with most sports I just watch randomly, don't really care who is who :p
@DavidZ Soccer? Meh.
16:15
@ManishEarth: If you're interested, found this: sudleyplace.com/pmtorm.html. Problem is it assumes you are in protected/kernel mode, to transition to real mode. However, normally the user is in ring 3/user mode, and indeed the kernel, for security reasons, blocks transition to ring 0.
checks weather for US/Belgium match 81 F? 74% humidity? That sounds great. I hope no one complains about those conditions.
Anyone hear of Awesome Games Done Quick?
Or Summer Games Done Quick?
16:33
@KyleKanos I've heard of Summer Games, and I think I've heard of the idea of Done Quick.

Q: Questions about Theoretical Physics in Physics Exchange

HectorIn the Area 51 Exchange I've found that "The Theoretical Physics site didn't have enough activity during the beta. It has been closed, and its content has been merged into Physics". But when I've done a question in the Physics exchange about Theoretical Physics my question was closed as off-...

@ManishEarth same here, though a bunch of people in my department are really into it.
A chemistry group on my floor has a betting pool for the WC. They're even playing all the matches on a projector screen in their meeting room. Not only is the PI totally on board with this, I think he's even the mastermind.
Yep, about the same with the astroparticle group across the hall from me
Multiple profs are involved
(they do it with March Madness too)
17:13
Is this an open discussion?May I ask abt any topic?
