3:00 PM
@Blue well, that's better.

:-D

@Blue That does sound delicious

@Sid Humph :-)

See here:

Anonymous
I don't like the dry ones much. Papri chaat with dahi (or even chutney) tastes awesome :)

3:01 PM
@Blue OK, like dahi-fuchka?

Sid
@WrichikBasu That's gupchup... err... golgappa...err... whatever you call that

Morning :)

Anonymous
@WrichikBasu Yep!

@Sid see the link.

3:03 PM
@SirCumference it's evening in India :-)
@Blue can't see image.

@WrichikBasu Good evening :)

@SirCumference same to you :-)

@ACuriousMind You should try it out :) Is Indian food available in Germany?

@Blue Yes, OK.

@Blue We do have a lot of Indian restaurants, but I have no way of judging how close what they sell is to actual Indian cuisine

Sid
Also, is German food available in India?

@ACuriousMind visit calcutta at least once. You'll feel like staying here forever.

Sid
I haven't ever seen one here.
@WrichikBasu Unfortunately, I hated the place when I last went there...

3:06 PM
@Sid why??

Anonymous
@ACuriousMind Yeah. That is one problem which I've heard many westerners complaining about. They seem to make the dishes sweeter (or less spicy) compared to the Indian counterparts.

@Blue Indian food is best found in India, you'll have to admit that. That's true with any country.

Anonymous
@Sid Very rare, I'd say. Germany is not very popular here for its cuisine. It's popular for its cars :d

Sid
@WrichikBasu Dunno, something felt off as compared to other metropolitan cities. It was too crowded, the shopkeepers weren't very friendly either, preferring to speak in native language than something we will understand. Oh, and too much emphasis on Fish(which I don't like. :P)

The Benz is popular everywhere.

Anonymous
3:09 PM
C'mon. Mercedes, BMW, Volkswagen...wow

@Blue I'm not sure German cuisine is popular anywhere, including Germany :P

@Sid man, that's a speciality here: fish. Shopkeepers are not always friendly, I do admit that.

Anonymous
@ACuriousMind lol, really? :D

Off topic: anyone here knows about car interiors functioning?

@ACuriousMind it's too hard to make outside of Germany
But I love it

Anonymous
3:11 PM
I've never had German food tbh

Anonymous
We mostly have Chinese food when we go out

Anonymous
Sometimes Arabic

No McDonalds?

@skullpatrol not quite famous here.

Anonymous
@skullpatrol That falls in the fast food category. But yeah, sure

Sid
3:13 PM
@skullpatrol Too costly for me, though.

Anonymous
It's "continental cuisine" here

Here, street shops called "dhabas" are more famous.

Sid
Easier to eat cheaply from street vendors

Anonymous
Pizzas are very popular though

@Sid Yes. And mostly fresh food.
@Blue I've never had one though.

Anonymous
3:14 PM
@WrichikBasu heh..whew

Never had pizza?

@Blue In the U.S. our chinese restaurants are supposedly nothing like actual chinese cuisine. Is that the same for you guys?

@SirCumference we haven't been to China, so can't possibly compare.
@0celóñe7 nope.

@WrichikBasu Woah...

Anonymous
@SirCumference Mostly same here. But we do have a few authentic Chinese restaurants (where we usually dine out).

3:16 PM
@SirCumference you haven't had a delicacy: dal and rice, with fried potatoes. Yum!

Anonymous
Mostly those are the restaurants having native Chinese chefs.

An authentic bengali meal. ^^

Sid
..Fish? God save me..

@Sid OK, you can neglect that and look for posto.

Sid
What is "posto"?

What is wrong with fish

He doesn't have fish.

Sid
@0celóñe7 I am scared of getting their bones in my throat. I had a bad experience in Childhood

@Sid becoz of childhood experience you're looking forward to missing a delicacy?

Sid
Yes. I don't want that to ever happen again

3:27 PM
@Sid that's sad :-(

How about crab and lobster?

@Sid lol what

Anonymous
@0celóñe7 Fish bones are usually not removed before serving them. So if you're not careful enough to remove the fish bones by hand while eating it can get stuck in your throat

@0celóñe7 you cannot say like that. Its the way we Indians eat.

And many more...

Anonymous
@0celóñe7 There are 100's of varieties of edible fishes which have bones

3:31 PM
Absolutely. Fish cannot be boneless like chicken.

He got traumatized

Anonymous
@0celóñe7 I can agree with the latter part. But maybe he had a traumatic experience which we are not aware of.

@WrichikBasu I'm abandoning this conversation then
That's simply false

Anonymous
@WrichikBasu They can be made boneless but it is time-consuming

Uh... all fishes have bones, the question is whether or not you remove them.

3:33 PM
look, i don't know who just flagged, but that was probably unnecessary.

@heather who flagged what?

Well, actually, some fishes don't have bones, only cartilage, but unless you eat shark I don't think many fish we consume are in that category

@WrichikBasu I don't know who flagged it, but someone flagged 0celo's "what kind of fish are you eating?" comment.

@ACuriousMind true. Pisces family has boneless ones, but plates mainly don't. :-)
@heather i see.

After watching "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" I will never look at chain saw the same @0celóñe7

@heather how did you know? I got no notification in my mobile chat.

Anonymous
@WrichikBasu It requires a minimum reputation on the main site

users with over 10k rep across all SE sites get notifications in chat much like you get pinged when someone responds to you @WrichikBasu

Wtf? He insulted a fish!!!

@heather i see.

3:42 PM
9 mins ago, by heather
look, i don't know who just flagged, but that was probably unnecessary.
let's end this discussion and move into something more constructive.

@skullpatrol He also insulted Sid in a following message. I agree the fish comment itself was rather harmless.

I wasn't accusing anyone.

Anonymous
0celo is having a bad day.

@LeakyNun handling salmon in suspicious circumstances?

@skullpatrol we weren't accusing you of accusing anyone =)

3:44 PM
@ACuriousMind The comments say that it was a reference to illegal fishing

Ok, lets end this discussion.

^

@LeakyNun It's curious to call out salmon explicitly
I mean, would illegal fishing of any other kind of fish be less bad?

@ACuriousMind I have no idea

Stop, defending salmon, please.
This is unreal.

3:48 PM
It certainly is a fishy situation.
2

Fishy bots programmed by you know who.

I highly doubt Voldemort is a programmer. He doesn't have the nose for it.

@ACuriousMind Voldemort? I assumed we were talking about Bernardo :-)

Anonymous
@JohnRennie I thought @BernardoMeurer is against proprietary malware...:D

Anonymous
How could you expect him to make fishy bots?

3:57 PM
Well, he'd make open-source bots, obviously

Anonymous
Oh, he is only against "proprietary malware". Not "malware" in general. lol

Apparently Linux scales well :-)

What are u people talking of?
I can't get the head or tail of it.

@WrichikBasu Groan :-)

@JohnRennie ???????????????????????

4:00 PM
@JohnRennie I don't think that was meant as whatever joke you understood it :P

@WrichikBasu we were making jokes about fish and you said: I can't get the head or tail of it

@JohnRennie okay, I get it. :-)

@WrichikBasu also that many question marks is considered to be "aggressive" in chat rooms ;-)

@ACuriousMind I have to Be Nice to fish too?

@skullpatrol please stop all these, I'm not accustomed to these :-(
@0celóñe7 aren't they living beings? ;-)

4:04 PM
@WrichikBasu tasty living beings ...

@0celóñe7 No, but to people (you called at least one other user ridiculous).
@WrichikBasu Stop all these what? He's just telling you how it comes across when you type that many question marks.

I must admit it had not occurred to me that posting lots of question marks was aggressive

@ACuriousMind I'm just telling that I'm not aware. Sorry.

Having a traumatic experience while eating fish, say almost choking to death, is not ridiculous at any age.

@JohnRennie Well, aggressive is probably not quite the right word. "Pushy", perhaps? I feel they communicate a strong sense of bewilderment and urgency

4:07 PM
@skullpatrol true. The sufferer knows the pain.

Exactly.

@ACuriousMind shrug. To me they just mean huh?

@JohnRennie I meant the same.

@JohnRennie Maybe I'm just a punctuation minimalist...

The system doesn't allow you to type the exact same message consecutively more than once for a reason.

4:11 PM
@JohnRennie a curious question: I see you helping Abcd in JEE preparation chat room quite a lot. Are you his relative, or just came to know him on the net?

Sid
@WrichikBasu "relative"... lol

Anonymous
"relative"?

Anonymous
:'D

Sid
Also, apparently I was insulted and I didn't know about it.

Abcd just happens to the person who has currently taken me up on the offer :-)

4:13 PM
@JohnRennie ok, I understand :-D

Sid
@JohnRennie You should start charging people.. :P

Anonymous
Talking about "relative", this is interesting

@Blue you don't have to go to that depth. lol

@Sid the advantage of doing things for free is that if you're not in the mood you can just refuse to do it. Charging money places an obligation on you.

Sid
@JohnRennie Actually, that makes sense.

4:17 PM
David Z has added an event to this room's schedule.

Is that^ automatically posted?

Anonymous
Yes

What's this chat session?

Are you sure?

What's special about then? Isn't this a chat session?

Anonymous
4:19 PM
@Mithrandir24601's "Ask Me Anything" session.

Anonymous
@WrichikBasu

Sid
Nope, Mith24's AMA is scheduled at a different time

Anonymous
@Sid Click on that link and scroll to the bottom

@WrichikBasu if you go back a few years this chat room was very quiet so we organised regular hour long chat sessions in the hope people would make a special effort to join the room for them.
Now the chat room is a lot livelier we use the chat sessions for discussing specific topics relevant to the PSE. e.g. homework policy.

Sid
4:23 PM
@JohnRennie Do you guys have data on the total no. of Physics.SE users who have contributed on >2 questions?

Anonymous
@Sid Use the SE data explorer

It'll be in the data explorer if I could be bothered to build a query for it.

And can we talk about insulting fish?

@skullpatrol no, that's over.

Sid
@JohnRennie Let that be. Do you have at least data on the total no. of users who voted in the last election?

4:24 PM
Specifically salmon.

@Sid me personally? No, though I'm sure it exists.

@Sid why do u want all these data?

Sid
@WrichikBasu For something useful.
Also, when was Physics.SE established? I mean, when did it get out of Beta if it ever was in Beta?

@Sid could I ask what useful? Do you want to become an employee of SE in future? Lol

@Sid Someone wrote a history of the PSE in the Meta

4:26 PM
When is the next mod election?

Anonymous
@Sid Didn't you have a "lot" of homework to do? :P

@JohnRennie Are you thinking of this post?

20
A: How did mathematics end up with two Stack Exchange sites, while Physics only got one?

Emilio PisantyI'll take this in roughly historical order, and to the extent that I'm aware of things and can remember them, though there is a definite danger that I'm telling the stories as we'd like to reimagine them rather than as they actually happened, so please go check the original sources and make up yo...

Sid
@Blue Shh. This is far more interesting. :P

Oh you scumbag, you ninja'd me AGAIN!!! :-)

4:27 PM
@WrichikBasu Whenever we need new mods. Elections are only scheduled when needed.
@JohnRennie I most certainly did!

"Scum bag"
-_-

A largely meaningless cartoon insult used in the UK.

@Sid man, this will not help u in studies :-P

Sid
Okay, so... Physics.SE graduated in 2011. So, it has been 6 years.

@Sid read the Gita if you have got excess time.

4:31 PM
Not as meaningless as "ghetto fish"

That is one of the odder posts to be suspended for :-)

Indeed.

@Sid Meta is full of "interesting" posts from the history of the site, if you like reading pages of heated arguments going in circles ;P

Sid
I am more interested to know stats, about say the total no. of users Physics.SE has or total people who were eligible to vote(and voted) in the last election and so on and so forth

@Sid shouldn't I say useless stats?

4:35 PM
Do you want to run for mod?

@Sid That sort of election stats is available on the election pages - go here

@skullpatrol whom are you asking? Me or @Sid ?

Anyone :-)

Sid
Perfecto!

Anonymous
Did mbq resign?

Sid
only 651 people voted? That's quite low, considering 2000 people knew about the election..

@skullpatrol I am not going to contest in near future. I neither have enough reputation, nor time to dedicate that much to this site. Maybe after retirement. :-D

4:48 PM
@JohnRennie your student has arrived in jee preparation ;-)

Uh oh :-)

@JohnRennie maybe with new queries from his study material.

@WrichikBasu No :-)

@Abcd okay :-D

I just want an intuitive idea of energy @JohnRennie. I have been struggling to understand this concept since 2 long years :(. I won't be able to study physics (and some part of chemistry) without understanding energy.

4:52 PM
There is no simple intuitive idea of energy.

@Abcd 2 years!!

If anyone else can help me get an intuitive idea of energy, please do so...
@WrichikBasu Yes, it's painful!

The word energy is used in lots of different ways to mean lots of different things.

I don't know what intuitive means so I'm out.

I have seen videos, read long articles and done what not @WrichikBasu!

Sid
4:52 PM
@Abcd I don't understand what exactly it is that you are asking

And that confuses the hell out of students!

Sid
^ that

@JohnRennie Help me understand the energy we deal with during high school years.

Energy is the capacity to do work @Abcd

@Abcd what do you want to know actually? You can post a question in the main site, if you want.

4:54 PM
@skullpatrol -_- I hate that definition. It's circular.

@skullpatrol that is the usual definition but it's a rubbish one

Do you understand what "capacity" means @Abcd

@ACuriousMind Already seen.
@skullpatrol Ability.

@Abcd Then what, exactly, do you want to know?

4:55 PM
No, not "ability". Capable. @Abcd

@ACuriousMind What do you mean by energy? Umm, let's say heat energy. What is it?. Where is energy? Why can't we see it?
And please do not include the concept of work in your explanation.

@Abcd The questions I linked answer that. Energy "is" nothing - it's just a number, a bookkeeping device we attach to physical objects and processes.

@Abcd fundamentally energy is kinetic energy.
Heat energy is the energy of motion of all the atoms and molecules rattling around in the hot material.

@ACuriousMind yes, that's the thing.

@JohnRennie Fortunately, I understand kinetic energy. What about potential energy?
@JohnRennie How do you link that to kinetic energy? Also, my textbook states that "heat is always the energy during transmission" therefore it's meaningless to say a body "has heat". However, your statement contradicts this.

4:59 PM
Energy due to configuration of system. @Abcd

@Abcd Potential energy is a large scale approximation that emerges from the interactions between countless individual particles.

@Abcd energies can be transformed.
