4:00 PM
@0celóñe7 no, you can make and break SATA connectors multiple times and they don't wear or break.

@JohnRennie socket.

Have a look in the BIOS settings. There is almost certainly a boot order setting there and that tells the PC what order to look at the disks when booting.

guys, you think the wikipedia article is a good introduction to quantum mechanics, or is there some other better resources you advise?
I had some very basics fundamentals of quantum physics on college, but I wanted to go a bit further, to understand better things that involve it, have read some answers here that I couldn't understand probably because of a lack of good background on this subject

Hi Ian.

@JohnRennie there does appear to be a boot priority setting in BIOS

4:14 PM
QM isn't my favourite bit of physics - I'm more interested in general relativity. However we do have lots of QM guys around and generally speaking they think the best approach to really understanding QM is a more axiomatic approach.

@JohnRennie So when my new drive is here and Windows is installed, I can throw in the old drive and use it as storage?
It will appear as a disk in file explorer?
I will eventually format it of course but I will be able to take files off of it?

The chap to speak to is @DanielSank as and when he is next in the chat room. I suspect he will tell you the Wikipedia article isn't the best starting point.

Thanks @JohnRennie, I imagined there was probably a better place to start, I'll wait he come online :)

@0celóñe7 Yes. Configure the BIOS to boot off the M.2 slot then put in the new disk and do all the installation. When it's all up and running put in the old disk and connect it to SATA 0 and Windows will see it as an extra disk. It will get whatever the next free drive letter is.

@JohnRennie SATA 0? Is that what I currently have it plugged in as?

4:18 PM
@0celóñe7 you'll have to look at your mobo to check, but it's normal to connect the disk to SATA 0 so you almost certainly have the current disk on SATA 0.

@JohnRennie : The first rule of Sci-Hub is: You do not talk about Sci-Hub. The second rule of Sci-Hub is: You do not talk about Sci-Hub!

@Qmechanic :-)
@Kaumudi.H hello again. How was dinner?
(I'm assuming it's ten p.m. ish in India so you've eaten dinner)

Sid
@JohnRennie 9:50PM to be precise.

??
this is what it currently looks like

Is that what you get by pressing a key at the startup screen?

4:21 PM
@JohnRennie Sï

If so that's a one time choice that allows you to temporarily boot from a different disk. If you go into Enter setup you can permanently change the boot order.

@JohnRennie Making the installation media now
when that's done I'll go into bios again

Sid
@0celóñe7 WHat happened to your computer?

@Sid Nothing yet

@0celóñe7 Remind me what mobo you've got so I can grab the manual for it ...

Sid
4:23 PM
So, you are booting from an external source or something?

@JohnRennie MSI B350M
@Sid My new SSD is arriving a few hours.
@JohnRennie Also I need to figure out how to partition a drive
I want to partition my HDD
Presumable I do that when it's being formatted

@0celóñe7 how do you plan to partition it?

hi, the h bar

@JohnRennie 1.5TB for Windows and 0.5 for Linux

Ah, OK, you mean you're going to partition the old disk after you've put it in as the seond disk?

4:26 PM
@JohnRennie Yeah.

You can do this from Windows. It's all very straightforward. We can go though it when the need arises.

k
@JohnRennie Is there any heat issue with the SSD being right under the GPU?

It shouldn't matter. I doubt the video card will heat the disk to any significant extent.

@JohnRennie get this

I suspect this it largely a matter of AMD shouting look we're better then NVidia :-)
Whether having 2TB memory on the card actually does anything useful is the question.

user228700
4:40 PM
@JohnR: Hi! :-) I'm sorry about that; the internet here isn't very good :[

@Kaumudi.H is there any wifi?

user228700
Nope!

Or are you stuck using your phone?

user228700
^ That I am, according to plan.

Maybe the building is attentuating the mobile signal and reducing the data speed.
You could try leaning out of the window :-)

user228700
4:42 PM
Dinner was...alright, actually. Rice, daal and sambaar, sigh.

No bread?

user228700
@JohnRennie :-) Perhaps, yes. It's quite manageable though.

Sid
TIL that Arab women can initiate a divorce if their husband don't pour coffee for them.

user228700
@JohnRennie Nope. What is this, a 5 star hotel? :-)

Oh well. Does the trip to the college take you past any street vendors selling food?

user228700
4:44 PM
Nah, it's a 5-minute walk.

user228700
The college does have a canteen but I haven't been there yet.

Starvation looms then. It was nice knowing you :-)

user228700
I did eat well enough to get by. I hope breakfast tomorrow is alright.

Good. So it's not so bad then?

user228700
:-(

user228700
4:45 PM
No, no, not too bad :-)

Why do you call it canteen
Why not cafeteria like the rest of the world

And tomorrow it all starts for real!! What lectures do you start with?

it sounds like the portuguese word for it, "Cantina"

user228700
And, as it happens, there are too many people with whom there is societal pressure to socialise. I remain an extreme introvert, because of which I will be hanging around here all the time to try to be productive, without actively participating in the conversation like before (Sentient Black Hole, weren't those the exact words?)

@Kaumudi.H Hey, Is the college situated around edapally?

user228700
4:47 PM
@JohnRennie I have no idea. I'll tell you tomorrow! :-)

user228700
@PhyMan Yes :-) Karimakkadu, to be precise.

@Kaumudi.H you haven't been given a lecture timetable?

@Kaumudi.H Then I assume Lulu Mall is nearby ;)
visited it yet?

user228700
@JohnRennie :-/ No, only what subjects we will be learning in the first semester.

@JohnRennie my SSD will be here by the time Windows is done downloading

4:49 PM
@0celóñe7 I think canteen has entered the Hindi language, possibly as a result of occupation by first the Portugese then the Brits.

user228700
They've asked us to take with us 3 notebooks tomorrow, that's really all.

@Kaumudi.H Why is a college babysitting you?

I guess you'll get all the details tomorrow.

@0celóñe7 Most of the college in india babysit students
many even have uniforms

@PhyMan o.O

4:50 PM
But the government ones are very lax
and lenient
And are also the best ones (phew)

Here you just show up to class, or not

user228700
@JohnRennie I will, yes. That's what they told us.

Go with the flow

@Kaumudi.H do you have uniforms?

user228700
@PhyMan Not all of them :-) Mine is a govt. college and we have a uniform.

4:51 PM
@JohnRennie Ok, so recall that temporary boot menu? What are the two options there for?

user228700
Aw man, this is quite frustrating, this terrible speed.

@Kaumudi.H YOU SERIOUSLY HAVE A UNIFORM

@0celóñe7 But all do have attendance policies, except around 2 or 3

@PhyMan WHAT

:39157519 Oh kay
@0celóñe7 Minimum attendance requirements

4:52 PM
@PhyMan That was an incredulous what, not a confused what.

@0celóñe7 Makes sense:)
But i dont have a problem with it

I know I'm not supposed to call countries savage, but...damn. Again, not saying anyone is savage.

@0celóñe7 I suspect they're the same thing i.e. choosing either will boot Windows from your current disk. The menu is displayed by a bit of software built into your PC called the UEFI boot manager. Exactly what it displays is down to how exactly it's been implemented.

Just the uniforms, and thank god i will be going to a college without uniform

user228700
@0celóñe7 Yeah, man. I ain't complaining; our placements records are one of the best in all of Kerala and most of South India.

4:54 PM
@0celóñe7 India is quite... troublesome

@Kaumudi.H Unless you are saying uniforms are equivalent or responsible for that, you should be complaining.
@PhyMan You should delete that.

user228700
Anyway, I should head to bed. I have an even longer day ahead :'-( I'll see you tomorrow.

I've gotten into big trouble for saying that.

@Kaumudi.H Goodnight!

@0celóñe7 taken your advice

4:55 PM
@Kaumudi.H tschüss

But how?

user228700
@JohnRennie 'Night!

But how what?

@0celóñe7 Sorry, meant why?
did you get into trouble

4:55 PM
it was a confusion "how"

@PhyMan There are people who like to get offended on others' behalves.

@0celóñe7 Huh... strange ways

These people send unnecessary flags to the 10k users. The broken system then suspends people.

@Kaumudi.H Hope you enjoy the countless holidays (Bandhs) :)

You're being a bit disingenuous. As I recall you say Indians were savages for eating with their hands.

4:57 PM
@JohnRennie I was, so?

PhyMan is saying life in India can be savage, which I take to mean it can be harsh. That's rather different to criticising the people living in India.

@JohnRennie You misunderstood me but I'm not able to defend myself without saying things that could get me suspended, so...
I can say that I was referring to the culture, not the people. Quite different.

Different opinions can exist among people, but it would not be quite right to flag em'

what is the difference? people=culture

@PhyMan some "opinions" need to be flagged

5:00 PM
So how exactly does the moderating system work here?

@AccidentalFourierTransform A black person in Africa and a black person in America are quite different in terms of culture.
@JohnRennie Apprently my drive is in SATA 4

@0celóñe7 yes. Would you say they are the same people? I would not, but perhaps there is a language issue here

Who pays for maintaing this website?

@0celóñe7 You sure that's not the DVD?

5:02 PM
@AccidentalFourierTransform they can be genetically identical, so yes
@JohnRennie DVD?

The optical drive - that's if it has an optical drive?

No optical drive.

Q: What is Stack Overflow's business model?

George StockerI once answered a question that asked how Stack Overflow makes money, but that was before the time of VC. Now, Stack Overflow has cash, and they have an ever-growing list of employees, but where's the business model? The Experts-Exchange team took the time to answer its own Q&A about its site (...

genetically identical? they are like twins from another country?

@0celóñe7 Ah OK. It's an odd decision to put the disk in SATA4, but your PC BIOS is probably set to boot off the first disk it finds.

5:04 PM
@JohnRennie I just plugged it into the mobo lol
Do you want me to prove it to a different spot? You have the manual

AFAIK, People=regional or ethnic grouping; Ethnic=relating to a population subgroup (within a larger or dominant national or cultural group) with a common national or cultural tradition.
i.e., people=culture
in a sense, of course
but who cares anyway

@0celóñe7 no, it doesn't matter because you'll be taking it out and putting in the new disk anyway.

@AccidentalFourierTransform I was specifically saying that eating rice and sauce with your hands is [redacted]. If people in [redacted] do that, well...
@JohnRennie Yeah but what about when I plug it back in?

@0celóñe7 is eating a pizza with your hands [redacted] as well?

@JohnRennie Ok, it seems the boot priority is "UEFI Hard Disk: Windows Boot Manager > Hard Disk:ST2000..." that's it

5:08 PM
@0celóñe7 Once the M.2 disk is in it makes no difference which SATA port you use for the 2TB disk.

@JohnRennie The default is to boot off of the M.2 disk?
@IanC Yes.

@0celóñe7 well, I was specifically addressing your comment "I was referring to the culture, not the people. Quite different."
whatev, no big deal

@AccidentalFourierTransform By person I mean a bundle of cells in this instance.

@0celóñe7 try it and see. Right now there probably isn't an option to set the M.2 disk as the default because it won't appear unless the M.2 drive is present.

5:09 PM
@JohnRennie Right, it doesn't appear anywhere.

@0celóñe7 the option will appear once the M.2 disk is installed.

@0celóñe7 what about bread? how do you eat it?

ahhhh where is it
@IanC Bread can be eaten with hands.
@IanC Also, it should be noted that [redacted] is defined in comparison with, say, forks. If someone knows forks exist and still uses hands...

acc to common etiquette, bread must be eaten with hands

@IanC I must admit I'm not keen on getting my hands greasy. Bread is generally OK because it's dry but I'm not a big fan of eating pizza with my hands, though I will do it in emergencies :-)

5:11 PM
^ This.
Hands must always be in a condition where one can do delicate experimental work

@0celóñe7 that's a cultural difference, as long as there's proper higienization before I don't see any issues with eating things with your hands

@Blue Thanks

I mean, in your country it's weird to eat pizza with your hands, it's fine

@IanC I agree it's a cultural difference. Doesn't mean it's not [redacted].

@0celóñe7 the problem is you're setting yourself up as judge of what is righteous.

5:13 PM
@JohnRennie exactly

FGM is a cultural difference, and it is as [redacted] as it gets

I don't see that as a problem.
@AccidentalFourierTransform In this country we have male genital mutilation too and no one talks about it.

@0celóñe7 that's pretty much the definition of bigotry

@AccidentalFourierTransform I'm not saying anything can be excused because it's cultural

everyone talks about it :-P

5:15 PM
Maybe in Spain
@JohnRennie Then the word is overused.

but comparing FGM to male circumcision is effing unfair, so shut up :-P
@0celóñe7 no, I meant in the states

we are not comparing eating rice with your hands and mutilating genitals are we?

So, now we can't even use the word [redacted]?

@PhyMan Best not to

I still don't even know what the word [redacted] was before being redacted

5:16 PM
savage I think

@JohnRennie Should I increase my CPU fan speed while I'm in BIOS?

I see, it is offensive

@0celóñe7 no, leave Windows to control the fan speed.

@JohnRennie So this curve is not what it's actually doing?
actually one of the fans is the water cooler pump
so best not to fiddle with it

@IanC it's offensive to call another culture savages because by doing so you are demeaning them. But this came up because PhyMan used the word to mean harsh in the context of life being harsh. I didn't consider that a problem because, well life can be harsh in most countries.

5:18 PM
The fact is that we generally eat rice with fish or meat which have gravy (and also bones). It is very difficult to eat rice with fish/meat with spoon or fork. Also, I don't know why but food seems to taste better when you eat with your hands. You can "feel" it more. Whether it is savage or not, I'll leave it up to you to decide. :)

@Kaumudi.H Man you need to read Notes.
Or at least read something tantalizing like something out of Borges' "Labyrinths"

@JohnRennie in that context it's alright

@Blue did you fix your math issue on fields? I'm home finally

@Blue I used to ask my mother to eat food with my hands when I was small (though here we use fork and knifes, with some few exceptions), and as long as I'd wash my hands she would let me
not sure why I enjoyed it though lol

@IanC yes, as I said 0celóñe7 is being disingenuous. He and PhyMan used the word in different ways so he can't really complain about different receptions to the use of the word.

5:23 PM
@JohnRennie I complained about different receptions?

what is the deal with circumcision in america anyway?
why is it such a big deal there?

@BalarkaSen Yes. First class was today

@AccidentalFourierTransform Do you mean why people want to cut off foreskins or why people are mad their foreskins were cut off?

both
no one else in the world seem to really care either way

@Blue Woo. Cool stuff.

@AccidentalFourierTransform Is it commonplace anywhere in the world besides America and Israel? Do Muslims get circumcised?

5:32 PM
so, the world is either America, Jewish or Muslim? what about, e.g., most Europe :-P

Where I grew up in Europe it was never done.

it is done in Europe, but mostly for medical reasons

uhhhh

Q. How do you circumcise a whale
A. It takes four skin divers

do i want to know what we are talking about

5:33 PM
not for hygiene/aesthetics

yeah, exactly
I meant never done for hygiene aesthetics

ok, so a kid gets cut for hygiene and/or aesthetics. Why is it such a big deal?
it is, in fact, more hygienic (and, arguably, aesthetic)

It's a big deal because the kid gets no say

the kid gets no say in 99% of the aspects that comprise his life anyway

Anonymous
@AccidentalFourierTransform The deal is probably that the act is done without the consent of the kid. I have no problem if the kid himself decides to get circumcised later on in his/her life when he/she is able enough to give consent.

5:38 PM
as I said, most things are done to the kid without consent. It is the parents responsibility to choose whats best for their kids. And getting circumcised later on is more complicated
(I wouldnt personally do it to my son FWIW)

Anonymous
@AccidentalFourierTransform "most things are done to the kid without consent"...that doesn't imply that it is the correct thing to do.

agree. So the argument is about whether it is correct or not. The kid having no choice is irrelevant to the discussion.

aesthetic is a retarded reason, too subjective
hygiene...eh? Is it really that hard to take care of?

you wouldnt let your kid scratch the chicken pox rash? you would not, but only for aesthetic reasons. The kid would be happier scratching their skin, and it would have zero real consequence later on, besides the marks it would leave
aesthetic reasons are always subjective
that doesnt mean it is not your responsibility, as a parent, to take the correct decision
@0celóñe7 well, dont ask me ;-)

i dunno either

5:45 PM
(also, paging @DanielSank, who may want to add something to the discussion)

@JohnRennie IT'S HERE

6:06 PM
@JohnRennie I can't get the M.2 screw out

@0celóñe7 Is it too tight, or do you not have the correct screwdriver?

@JohnRennie The whole standoff came off when I tried to take out the screw.
I think I'm missing a part.
this diagram is so ridiculous
that whole peg came off of the motherboard
I can't get the screw out of the top

@0celóñe7 It may be that the screw is screwed into the top of the standoff more firmly thn the standoff was screwed into the base of the PC.

@JohnRennie Yes, so what do I do?

if the while thing has come out can you grip the sides of the standoff tightly enough to let you remove the screw from the top?

6:12 PM
@JohnRennie No, and I'm stripping the screw now.

Can you post a photo of the standoff?

Hmm, the slot at the top is a bit damaged ...

@JohnRennie Some pliers helped
Now the screw is magnetized
Does dropping demagnetize enough?

So you've managed to get the screw out of the top of the standoff?

6:16 PM
Yes, but now it's magnetic.

It doesn't matter whether the screw is magnetised or not. In fact it's common to deliberately magntise screws to make them easier to install.
You just need to refit the standoff to the base of the PC then install the disk.

Yeap

You don't need to use a lot of force.

Cool :-) You just need to temporarily disconnect the SATA disk and off you go!

6:21 PM
@JohnRennie Pray it works

It'll work :-)

@JohnRennie custom install?
Or default? I forgot which one we did
I guess they call it upgrade

Ah, I was wondering for a moment what you meant. You want the option that isn't an upgrade. New installation or whatever it's called. The lower of the two options.

I guess custom because there's no windows on the computer
Drive 0 465.8 GB

From here I think it's just a matter of clicking next. There's nothing you need to change.
@0celóñe7 it's working then :-)

6:35 PM
@JohnRennie this is taking forever
Maybe I have a lemon

I think it takes about five minutes
Why do you think it's taking forever?

Idk, I'll have to benchmark it
I don't know my Microsoft password
I swear I just went through this

Didn't we set it up with a local account?

Ah, it's my usual login info
@JohnRennie I changed that later
My resolution randomly changed and now I'm in 4:3

@0celóñe7 it needs the NVidia drivers. It will have used default settings for the video.

6:49 PM
@JohnRennie it switched back. Nvidia drivers are already installed somehow

@0celóñe7 hmm, you should probably still install the latest drivers direct from the NVidia site.

@JohnRennie yeah I'm going to

If you've got this far it's basically all done. Install any drivers you need then let it install any outstanding Windows updates.
Then just reconnect the old disk to SATA4.
You should find the PC is noticably quicker. Especially when starting Windows.

I used Bernardo's code and it seems to work
@JohnRennie I won't comment until this benchmark is done.
@JohnRennie still slower than my laptop
How does that even happen
@JohnRennie yeah, I'm in the 25th percentile for this disk model
I got a lemon

What were you testing with? Passmark?

7:03 PM
Yeah.
Running Samsung Magician now

While we were talking I noticed a PC on eBay and ... I've just bought it :-)

So do I return the SSD?

@JohnRennie ok

Didn't I already do that? I was just searching to see if I'd posted a picture of the test scores but I can't find it ...
Downloading now. It'll take a minute or two ...

@JohnRennie ran it again and got 13865

@0celóñe7 I ran the disk tests three times because you get a bit of scatter due to other things using the disk. How do your disk test results compare with these?
My results seem about right. I forgot to turn the AV off which probably slowed them a bit.
@0celóñe7 if that's the disk score then that's about what you'd expect and that's pretty fracking fast!!!
More than twice as fast as the SSD in my laptop, which is already pretty fast.
That's no lemon :-)

7:28 PM
AV?

Anti-virus
The anti-virus affects disk speed because it checks data as it's read from and written to the disk.
Anyway, your disk is awesomely fast. Stop worrying!
And with that I'm off to bed. See you tomorrow.

What's up?
@Blue where the fuck are you coding?

Anonymous
Turbo C++

@Blue Well the basic problem is listed right there in the error message. They development environment is failing to read the include files and so all the declaration in them are going un-read.
There are three obvious possible causes:
1. The files aren't there because you have a borked or partial installation of the development environment.
2. The files are there, but they have their permissions set so that you can't read them (or does that even apply on DOS based OSes?).
3. The files are present and readable, but there is a configuration glitch which has the environment looking for them in the wrong place.
