@yuggib I was walking to the bathroom in the library and saw springer.com/us/book/9783540440857
should I read it

Holy crap

page 1 are the ZFC axioms '-.-

Sorry I thought I posted that in the astronomy chat

@SirCumference u stupid

12:17 AM
@0celo7 yeh
omg no
i realized i did it again when it was submitting

did u go to school on the short bus

Stop bulling my pal.

:D
@Sᴋᴜʟʟᴘᴇᴛʀᴏʟ Wait who are ya?

12:20 AM
Ok

good lord this book is scary
@yuggib plsno
@yuggib I refuse to read this!

@0celo7 What book?

"Set Theory"

Q: Physics SE is for who?

user122066Are non-physicists allowed to ask questions on physics SE? I get the impression that only people with a good (vast?) knowledge of physics are allowed to ask questions here. Should we turn people away when they say theyre 16 years old or e.g. if someone expresses a lack of understanding of unit...

Q: Can the Hall effect drive a current?

Henning MakholmIn the Hall Effect current is passed through a wide strip of metal in a perpendicular magnetic field. Since (some of) the negative charges in the metal move but the positive ones stay put, the magnetic field will cause a potential difference between the two sides of the strip: How can this pot...

surprisingly deep question has be sadly overlooked.

Q: Physicsoverflow question

user122066What exactly is physicsoverflow.org? ive recently seen a couple of my questions pop up on that website. (Which is intruiging because when posted on physics SE my posts seem to draw the ire of 2 or 3 influential people yet physicsoverflow seems to find them useful) Is it better than physics SE?...

2:51 AM
Meta is getting ridiculous.
Is there a cap on the number of questions somebody can ask?

3:07 AM
@knzhou I think users are subject to the usual low-rep limits, but that's simple not consequential in this case.
I've recused myself on this case of moderation duties, however, so we'll just have to wait.

Does anyone know how long it takes to learn GR?

@SirCumference Depends on your choice of coordinate system.
I mean, seriously, there is damn all that you can count on beyond local measurements, right?

Er, so how long would I have to study GR to become an astrophysicist?

Most folks going that way try to have some contact with the subject in their undergrad and then really wade in during grad school. If their specialization calls for it, but many of them do these days.

3:10 AM
I mean, you could do stellar formation or exoplanets without it, right?

Yeah, but what if I want to accurately understand gravity?
Or I want to go into cosmology?

But cosmology or the life-cyle of hig-mass stars, active galaxtic nuclei and so on all call for it.

Okay, what if I wanted to research black holes?
Or the Big Bang?
Just how long did it take you to learn GR?

@SirCumference Then you're going to be working on for essentially all of grad school and (if you're lucky) your post docs and after you get on the tenure track and ...
It never ends, you just follow the rabbit hole as far as you can.
If you go with those subject you've signed up to be a GR researcher.

Okay, how long of studying GR in school does it take for you to become a cosmologist?
Or for how long did you study GR in school?

3:13 AM
A year in the class room and a few years doing your research, I suppose.

How long's "a few years"?
On average?

You might check with the AIP's survey of earned doctorates, but the only time frames I know with any certainty are for experimental nuclear and particle people.

Ok, so next question
How long does it take to learn QM and QFT?

good evening
@SirCumference years
define "learn"

Let's see. At my last post doc I knew a guy working on a theoretical cosmology thesis. He was in grad school around seven year. His advisor was getting impatient, too.
@SirCumference Same answer for QFT. You can be applying them to your research after a couple of years of grad school, but the horizon is endless.

3:16 AM
@0celo7 Be able to teach classes and answer a variety of questions from other curious physicists

Depends what level the class is at and how prepared the physicist are. And you should fear smart twelve year-olds. They're the worst.

@dmckee That's still not clear to me.
Maybe I should read a GR book for, you know, physicists, and figure out what the hell the theory is about

Ok, so how long would it take me to become as knowledgeable in GR or QM as, say, @dmckee?
Just for comparison

@dmckee How much GR do you know?
In 2016 ;)

@0celo7 How do you quantify that?

3:18 AM
@SirCumference A one semester class and some hard thinking can bring you up to my level in GR. I suck at it.

@dmckee um...k

@dmckee No offense but I'm surprised it would take that long. You've said you've forgotten all of the math

I had three semester of formal QM in grad school, plus I took Waleka's theoretical nuclear physics class. And I've applied the theory now and again for about twelve years since graduating.
@0celo7 Fair enough.
But I bone up when I need to do something serious with it.

@SirCumference dmckee is a particle experimentlaist, he has no reason to know any GR.

So about twelve years of learning would bring me to your level?
@0celo7 Oh yeah...

3:20 AM
Except maybe in his intro modern physics class they cover some basics

@SirCumference Well, if we're assuming you're as dense as I am, and only look at it a few times a year. But maybe you're one of the smart ones.

All right, how long of learning GR would it take for me to teach numerous graduate level classes?

@0celo7 It's on the schedule, but we seem to lose a couple of week in SR each term, and I end up skipping it.

@SirCumference depends what GR

Nine years? Six years? A year?
@0celo7 Sigh...all right, fine. How long would it take before I know as much about GR as Albert Einstein?
Why not?

3:21 AM
Someone who does GR exclusively does not exist in the US

@SirCumference All of grad school (mostly applying it, not classroom stuff) and perhaps a postdoc or two. The thing that makes you ready to teach grad students is both mastering the book learn'in and then using it.

@SirCumference maybe 2 semesters
the theory was not well understood at all while he was alive

@0celo7 ;-;

there's more in MTW than he knew about
he did not even believe black holes were real
but even then, you probably would not be able to teach the GR class I want my adviser to do

@0celo7 Of course, I note that we keep seeing hyperbolic stories in the media about how they're in again and then out again. And the abstract look to this ignoramous like we're still pretty unsure of a lot of detailed behavior around the nominal horizon.

3:23 AM
even then = after all that crap dmckee said

Okay, so how long of learning QM and QFT would it take for me to teach numerous graduate level classes?

@SirCumference what kind of questions are these, anyway

user218912
what kind of questions are these?

@3750 :30941471 ;-;

@SirCumference All of your grad school classroom time and then some years of applying it.

3:25 AM
All right, cool

But getting the job at a department that teaches graduate students is the hard part. If you can manage that you'll have the preparation.

I've got my plan

user218912
@SirCumference are you my age?

@dmckee I don't have a handle on all of that quantum nonsense :P

@3750 17?

user218912
3:25 AM
what year are you?

@3750 Graduated

user218912
ok same age then basically.

Born in December
You?

user218912
january

@SirCumference Jesus
I thought I was young

3:26 AM
@0celo7 No, but I appreciate how you feel about me
I'm not Jesus tho

@SirCumference You are Jewish

user218912
lol

@0celo7 Yeah?

I should probably eat dinner sometime

@0celo7 What year, what month were you born?

3:27 AM
@SirCumference Not telling you so you can steal my identity

December 1998
@0celo7 Wat
@3750 So you're Jan 1999?

user218912
0celo7 said it before search the chat.

I'm lazy

user218912
@SirCumference no 1998.

Oh .-.
I'm young

3:28 AM
you're 11 months apart and in the same age group
@SirCumference I literally just said that

user218912
what university are you going to? @SirCumference

Confidential

I bet @3750 could have kicked your ass when you were kids

Rather not make a big deal out of it

11 months makes a big difference

user218912
3:28 AM
@SirCumference what...?

@SirCumference lame

I already revealed my ACT scores which was a mistake

user218912
nobody cares dude

@SirCumference weirdo

@0celo7 No u

3:29 AM
@SirCumference No. You're the weird one.

user218912
you ARE being weird by not revealing your university.

@0celo7 No u

@dmckee how goes the summer

It's something I'd rather not reveal

fail anyone yet

user218912
3:29 AM
unless it's some really bad one you're embarrassed to tell us @SirCumference

Like HDE not stating where he's from
@3750 It's a good one, which is why I don't want to make it public

...what

user218912
lol

Ok...lemme explain

user218912
you don't want to show off?

3:30 AM
I don't like to make good things I've gotten public

user218912
why?

Or else people get a vendetta towards you

it's not showing off if you're asked, idiot

user218912
...

It's my credo

3:30 AM
@SirCumference it's the internet

Telling 0celo7 my ACT wasn't a good idea

if someone has a vendetta, block them
i don't even remember it

user218912
we don't even know your name or how you look like.

Making my school known is an even worse idea

stop flattering yourself

user218912
3:31 AM
xD

@3750 I have curly hair

ok, I do remember that you're jewish
I could look for a little jew hat I guess
pick you out that way

@0celo7 "Little jew hat?"

user218912
is that offensive to you?

Ya mean yarmulke?

3:32 AM
@SirCumference sure

@3750 No it's just weird

this is a strange conversation

But anyway, I got my life plan straight. Imma go to med school, while learning GR and QFT as a side project

user218912
what...

Just so I feel a bit more fulfilled in my life

user218912
3:33 AM
you'll be like deepak chopra

@3750 Who?

who?
deepak is a dutch hardstyle act

@0celo7 A what?

@SirCumference what part is unclear

@0celo7 "Hardstyle act"

3:34 AM
did you try googling it

What on earth is that?
I'm scared it's some sex technique

user218912
deepak is this loser doctor who applies quantum mechanics and cosmology to healing and stuff.

you're gonna flunk out of of med school with that attitude

user218912
basically bs lord.

@0celo7 Okay fair enough
@3750 I'm not gonna apply it. But I wanna learn what interests me.
It's fulfilling

3:36 AM
besides, what kind of weirdo teenager is worried about a sex position

@0celo7 I'm pretty sheltered, I'll be honest

I can help you

user218912
???

www.4chan.org

Uh no thanks

3:36 AM
go to /b/

@0celo7 Uh definitely no thanks

read, absorb

user218912
what does /b/ stand for

@3750 random

@0celo7 A bout a third of my class is really struggle with vectors (Still! More than halfway through!) and that's slowing things down.

user218912
3:37 AM
@0celo7 do you browse there?

As I have no idea what the opposite gender's...parts look like, I consider myself kind of innocent

user218912
it looks scary.

user218912
@SirCumference didn't you learn in school?

@3750 No because most of my class just kept repeating stupid crap, so we never learned much

@3750 of course
@3750 no?
@SirCumference hahahhaha

3:39 AM
@0celo7 ._.

no, that can't be right
hahahahha

Stahp...

user218912
then you're not curious enough to become a scientist.

That's either the funniest thing I've heard in a week
or a lie

Maybe this is why I don't have a GF...

3:41 AM
definitely the most awkward chat conversation ever
@SirCumference lol

@0celo7 Yeah I'mma remove some stuff

It's too late

Er what

We now know you don't know what a vagina is

Of course I know what that is

user218912
3:41 AM
@SirCumference you're like me, you spend a lot of time on physics but in the end you don't know a single thing.

I just dunno what it looks like
So I'm not innocent! Ha!
...

wew

You dunno my life...
For all you know, I could be your brother

@SirCumference look it up right now

@0celo7 Lemme alone

3:43 AM
@SirCumference my brother is married with kids, he knows what it looks like

@0celo7 According to QM, there's a chance that I am exactly where your brother is. Thereby making me your brother.

user218912
@SirCumference see what I mean?

that's bullshit

user218912
you don't know any physics.

user218912
neither do I but

3:44 AM
NO! YOU DID NOT STAR ME...

user218912
I don't say dumb things like that

user218912
or do I

That's not okay...

@3750 you don't

According to QM, you do and you don't

3:46 AM
stop

user218912
lol

I'm hiding that message

we still know

user218912
wow.

user218912
abuse.

3:46 AM
just...look it up
it's probably not healthy to live like that

Probably not...
I dunno, hopefully I'll learn it eventually

user218912
why did you star all my messages and 0celo7's?

@3750 Because he starred my message about me being innocent...

user218912
if you don't remove the stars I'll star your message you're trying to hide.

I'd really not like that publicized

user218912
3:47 AM
and it will go to the top for a week.

...
You're an ass...

user218912
no.

user218912
I just don't want my messages starred.

user218912
for no reason

Well excuse you, neither do I

user218912
3:48 AM
it was for a reason though

user218912
0celo7 found it to be necessary

I found it necessary to hide it
Please just let bygons be bygons

I think it's hilarious

Listen, you do you
I do me
And we don't do each other
...yeah lemme fix that wording

user218912
you're weird

user218912
3:49 AM
dude

Son of a...

@SirCumference did you star that

Dammit!

user218912
2 people did?

I starred it, of course

3:50 AM
Now the thing won't go away!
You monster

lel

user218912
I see.

user218912
lol

@dmckee What's troubling them?

YES! Wooooooooooooo
So...yeah...
What's up with you guys... ._.

user218912
3:52 AM
sorry but by tomorrow all the 1 stars will disappear.

user218912
and go down.

No...
NOOOOOOOOO

user218912
if you feel bad just ask a mod to remove it.

"It's only the internet" they said. "You can be as honest as you want" they said.

user218912
3:53 AM
@0celo7 what?

@SirCumference you can
but if you say silly things, expect people to make fun of you :P

user218912
@SirCumference you're behaving like a child.

@3750 Sigh...
Where did I go wrong...

user218912
0celo7 gets dumb things starred all the time but he doesn't care.

I do?

user218912
3:55 AM
Idk

@0celo7 Well, kinda, with the JavaScript vs Java thing...

everything I say is carefully crafted
@SirCumference what

0celo7 doesn't have JS

I still maintain I do not have JS

@0celo7 Of course you do. JS is used to make websites
Java is used to write programs
This chat uses JS

4:00 AM
nah

user218912
books.google.com is really useful for finding a book on a specific topic you need.

@0celo7 Somebody star this, please
It deserves a star

why

4:17 AM
Same reason mine did
@dmckee Sigh, could you, uh....remove that message of mine that has 2 stars?
Without laughing?

lol

1 hour later…
5:22 AM
@SirCumference I've cancelled the stars. I cannot delete the post without leaving a link to it so I suggest you just let it quietly hide amongst the crowd of random chatter. If it gets restarred ping me and I'll cancel the stars again.

@JohnRennie K thanks a ton

5:36 AM
@0celo7 It is a very interesting book
I suggested it to @MAFIA36790 ;-)

\o @yuggib

it is a standard reference if you are interested in forcing and the alike
@skillpatrol o/
@0celo7 It is apparently so interesting they stole it to me once in my office during the PhD T__T
it was the university copy, so I had to buy it back to them
damn

Stealing books is so... juvenile
(except ebooks ;)

user54412
@JohnRennie So I'm here in England for essentially the first time, and I must say the weather is exactly what the stereotype said it would be. And that's great, since back home it was 100F/100% humidity.

5:51 AM
Have you begun preparations to move to the best coast yet? @ChrisWhite

user54412
I'm realizing I can't afford the best coast :(

user54412
3k for studios without any amenities? how? who is buying these things?

user54412
Like, I've never met anyone in Berkeley who I would describe as stably employed. But somehow they're all rich.

user54412
5:55 AM
And they still find money left over for all the drugs.

prescription not required ;)

"Shared: <famous scientist>'s MacBook Pro" -- that's when you know you've connected to the wifi at an academic conference.

that's the life style of the rich & famous
Those who can afford a MacBook Pro
Did they stop the conference during the soccer game today? @ChrisWhite

The UK sits on the border between two supercells, and on the border between the Atlantic and continental weather systems. As a result the weather is extremely sensitive to small perturbations, making it, erm, interesting :-) There's a reason the British traditionally talk about the weather all the time ...

user54412
today is only 7 hours old...

6:03 AM
I meant yesterday
your time

@skillpatrol it cost me 130 bucks...

@yuggib ouch!

user54412
I'm not sure I had a yesterday.

@JohnRennie I claim that by all means, Caribbean weather is more interesting than British weather ;-P

@ChrisWhite When I worked for Unilever I used to go to New York quite a lot because they have a research lab in Edgewater. I think it's a lot easier flying west because it just extends your day - you in effect stay up late the first day and you're OK after that.
Flying east is worse because you either stay up 17 hours longer or go to bed 7 hours early. Either way is hard.
@yuggib admittedly we don't get hurricanes, or at least not very often :-)

6:16 AM
Still leaving 100F/100% humidity is worth the jet lag
