10:00 PM
@BernardMeurer did you receive an e-mail back?

Hmmmm
The disappointment of seeing a post full of delicious math and then realizing the OP probably doesn't actually know what they're talking about and that that thing doesn't make sense is harsh :/

Q: Homotopy group of the conformal group

marRrRI would like to know which are the first three homotopy groups of the conformal group SO(4,2): $$ \pi_n(SO(4,2))=? \quad n=1,2,3 $$

This?
That seems to make some sense, at least.

@Danu The question makes sense, but isn't physics. The answer is 1 min old, how could my message possibly pertain to that?
But...you at least got the right user :P

@ACuriousMind I thought you were talking about a question ;)

Hey everybody, I'm trying to explain the Higgs mechanism to high schoolers, without using any 'fancy physics'.

10:15 PM
Don't :P

The analogy I'm going with right now is transverse waves on a string, that is hung from the ceiling by a spring.

@knzhou what's the point of that.

The dispersion relation has a minimum frequency, which is a mass gap.

Maybe try to get the concept of a field in their minds; that'd already be cool.

It's because the spring is breaking translational symmetry.
But: it's not a real example because the broken symmetry is not a gauge symmetry.
Anybody have a more faithful idea?
I'd try fields but they really don't know the math for that.

10:16 PM
Use the temperature field as an example
Dun need no math

@3075 Not yet, they did say it could be today or tomorrow

I feel like the idea of talking about mass gaps is too ambitious

It's just that, without this kind of stuff, explanations of the Higgs mechanism are really cartoon.
They're smart kids!

I don't see much value in trying to give a low-level explanation of it, yeah.

@3075 I made a python script that checks quest every 10 minutes. Am I paranoid yet?

10:26 PM
Serious question though.. is That guy just a new account of an old user?

...how did you find that one? Didn't show up in the users search for me

@ACuriousMind I remembered that this guy existed.

Well, duh, else I would not have tried to search ;P
did you just go through old questions till you found one of his posts?

@DavidZ @dmckee or other mods, there is this user Lawrence B. Crowell, who has a username identical to an old user (inactive for 5 years) and discusses similar topics. Perhaps it's the same guy, and he's lost access to his account. Maybe one of you can contact him and ask? Maybe he can recover his old account (assuming he wants to)?

I've merged the two instances of your account(s). You can flag for moderator attention when that happens. — dmckee ♦ May 10 '11 at 14:12

10:30 PM
@ACuriousMind First one I clicked worked---in the "related" questions.
Ah, a simple merge might also work.
@ACuriousMind Now how'd you find that? ;)

@Danu I wanted to see if the writing style matched and went through a few answers.
I'm undecided whether this is the same user, but then again, it's been five years

Topics matched, close enough :P

BTW, don't research the name if you want to be unbiased :P

@ACuriousMind Lol
The first hit thinks he's at the IAS
The other hits disagree :P

Yeah, it's actually the Alpha Institute for Advanced Study (at least that's what the arXiv/viXra papers say)
And just from looking at a list of their members you know what kind of thing that aias is

10:38 PM
Budapest

There's also a funny amazon hit where our other Crowell reviews his book.

Oh, nooooo it's the Evans guy's place!
Ah, I thikn the IAS Crowell is at is not the crackpot AIAS of Evans
I mean... This guy is not trying to sell some crackpot theories.

Might there be two LB Crowells and our high-rep former user is the IAS one and this new one is the other?

Neh, why would there be 2?
Seems unlikely.
Oh no, I guess the Crowell that we're getting google hits on is affiliated with Evans.
Hmm... It really seems like the guy posting on PSE is legitimate at least in the sense of not obviously trying to sell any personal theories. Also being interested in strings, which crackpots usually hate.

@BernardMeurer Really???
Does it really work?

10:51 PM
@3075 Yeah hahaha

Also I am asking about the d. kim email.

I'm getting it to work
Soon enough

@Danu The address "Alpha Institute of Advanced Study 10600 Cibola Lp 311 NW Albuquerque," from the arXiv papers is actually a "Seven Bar Banch" according to Google, which is...suspicious to say the least

did you receive a response?

@3075 Ah, no she didn't say a thing

10:52 PM
@BernardMeurer call her when your physics shows up on quest.

@3075 I will, I'm just waiting for that
lol, I'm going to make this script hit me an sms when it shows up

also did your application status change from declined to pending?

No, but that's expected because Brain Baley is handling it by hand

@ACuriousMind Prrrretty weird.

@BernardMeurer it's cool you can program, I can't even do a hello world program xD

10:54 PM
@3075 I can teach you Python if you want :v
It's AMAZING

@BernardMeurer if you come to waterloo.
do you know java by any chance?

or I can send you a book on Python for beginners that I have in PDF

@Danu That link doesn't work

@3075 I did some Java for Android, it's similar to C# so I can handle it. I find it a hideous language though

10:55 PM
Ah, had to enable Javascript for the google.nl :P

@BernardMeurer yeah I agree.

I'm learning it in class.

@Danu Oh, I meant "Seven Bar Ranch", not "Banch" xD

problem is I didn't attend any of the classes O-o

10:56 PM
@ACuriousMind Weird...

@3075 Lol, that's never good

@Danu I fixed it, problem was on my end

Java is horrible, IDK why people insist on it
Scala runs on the JVM and is much more readable

@BernardMeurer Dw I only need to pass it, also can you explain to me stacks and ques?

so it Kotlin
ques?

10:58 PM
@ACuriousMind OK. Nice reviews, huh? :D

@BernardMeurer we learned ques apparently.
idk
queues*

I have no clue what a ques is hahaha
AH

Going to bed now. Bye guys.

Lol sorry fail.
bye danu.

@Danu lol, didn't think to read them
g'night

10:59 PM
@3075 A queue is an abstract data type
It's literally just a queue :v

I don't know how to implement a queue in java.
I know what a queue is.

Ah, do you know what the stack is?

yeah.

Why the fuck do they want you to implement that in Java
I don't see the point in that

for learning?
it's a dumb class.

11:01 PM
Even so that's not practical learning
It's like teaching someone maths by using exemples they'll never use
OH WOW DOES THAT SOUND FAMILIAR
@3075 Maybe this can help you

well idgaf, I need to get a 50% without going to the classes.
I have a 85% right now somehow.

wtf you a genius or something?

Idk
It was kind of basic
like writing java methods to solve easy problems.
I did ok, and I got 100 on this html assignment.
since I coded my own website before long ago.

Email me at meurerbernardo@gmail.com
I'm giving you a book you might enjoy

add me on skype?

11:05 PM
Are you 3075 on Skype? I'm bernardo_meurer@hotmail.com there
beware: there are many mes

@BernardMeurer no but close.
and there is more than 1 of you.
for some reason

Because I like to be hard to find on Skype
jk because I can't delete the other me's
Add all of them :v
only one will answer

I did.
(I found you)

There I added you from the right one

11:31 PM
@BernardMeurer my car is broken
the subwoofer is vibrating one of the lights in the trunk
it sounds atrocious

11:43 PM
@0celo7 karma

@BernardMeurer for?

@0celo7 Being a mysoginist to your girl

Really want to add random people on skype
like you, @BernardMeurer

@BernardMeurer sigh

@NeuroFuzzy Go for it
@NeuroFuzzy Want to see you find the right me, it's difficult

11:48 PM
@BernardMeurer Czech your skype

@NeuroFuzzy Nothing :)

Did you steal a profile image from someone??

@NeuroFuzzy there's more than one with my picture
But I guarantee this is me

Same b&w profile picture? I only see two people listed and I added the one with your black and white picture haha
oh crap i have to go to class
you win this round :(

@NeuroFuzzy I added you form the right one :)
