Good night @Daniel; I would love to hear your progress in your book, btw.

Anonymous
@DanielSank See this question was closed on Physics SE physics.stackexchange.com/questions/276432/… . But the exact same question was allowed on Physics Forums physicsforums.com/threads/… ....but as you know quality of Physics Forums is not that good .

Anonymous
@MAFIA36790 Have a look

Anonymous
@JohnRennie Will it be ok if I ask support on other Science related stack exchange sites ? Or it will seem awkward ?

Anonymous
I'm amazed that Beekeeping on Area 51 can have so many followers :-P @JohnRennie...

Beekeeping

Proposed Q&A site for anyone interested in caring for, maintaining, learning, making hives, or starting a colony of bees.

Currently in definition.

7:08 AM
@S007 well, I think Physics Forums does quite well for a different kind of Q&A model

Anonymous
@DavidZ I know. But it really lacks quality.

Anonymous
If we could add quality to that model it would be excellent

What I'm saying is that it doesn't lack quality, at least not as much as some people seem to think
I guess I really shouldn't get into this discussion because I have to leave chat shortly though :-P

Anonymous
Well... if you say so xD

Anonymous
BTW please have a look at the new site proposal before you leave...we need some support

Anonymous
7:10 AM
Bye then

My suggestion is to think precisely about what it is that Physics Forums lacks ("quality" is pretty vague in the grand scheme of things), and that will help define the proposal

@S007 I probably wouldn't post on the meta of the other SE science sites, though you could ask in their chat rooms.

Anonymous
Ok I am thinking... :-) @DavidZ @JohnRennie Well I could do that...

@S007 in my opinion, that question is if topic because it doesn't ask a question. If OP has simply asked about the conceptual differences between the method and asked why one is right and the other wrong, it would have been fine.
I conjecture that you will want the same basic level of good question asking practice in the new site.
@MAFIA36790 it's been a few days since I worked on it.

Anonymous
@DanielSank Well, that question will be on topic on the new site because the OP is stuck and needs help in identifying whihc method is correct

Anonymous
7:20 AM
Also considerable effort has been shown

Anonymous
I conjecture that you will want the same basic level of good question asking practice in the new site.----- Of course!

Anonymous
7:36 AM
@JohnRennie Do you think this should be acceptable on the new site? I think it is ok. physicsforums.com/threads/…

Yes, that seems OK

@S007 for whatever it's worth, I think a good fraction of the closed posts on this site need only need minor edits to be on topic.

Anonymous

Anonymous
This question really is ok...it is not possible to boil down everything to one concept

Anonymous
For #2, you might want to consider Mathematics instead. Note that we aren't a homework-help service, so #1 (and likely #3 as well) are considered off-topic here. You can make this on-topic by changing the question to ask about the physics concept that is giving you trouble.----- I stronly disagree with this!

Anonymous
7:40 AM
I would like to allow it in the new site

@S007 it asks three questions, which is already a problem on any SE site, but let's look past that.
Question #1 is sort of ok, but doesn't need all the math there to be asked.
Question #2, as you say, should be in Math.SE, and in particular should be it's own post.

Anonymous
Well 1 and 3 are acceptable at least

Anonymous
For that the whole question should'nt be closed

Anonymous
2---yeah....that is math

Anonymous
but we could answer the rest

Anonymous
7:43 AM
moreover once closed...hardly questions are opened

Question #3 is actually fine but should be reworded.
Anyway, the real problem in that post is lack of focus. I doubt you want that same lack of focus in the new site.

Anonymous
Ok we can make a policy regarding focus of question

Anonymous
For the time being atleast you can add 5 new questions in the proposal...regarding the type of question you want...and add a discussion thread if you get time

@S007 yes but now notice what you're doing: you're saying that you've found an example of a question which is off-topic here but on topic on the new site if it were better.

Anonymous
"if it is slightly reworded"

7:46 AM
Surely you see the problem with that reasoning.

Anonymous
yes

Anonymous
I doubt that even if it was reworded

Anonymous
it would'nt be allowed

Anonymous
on PSE

Anonymous
PSE is not a check my work type of site

7:48 AM
If we were to fix the problems we just agreed on in that post, it would be fine on PSE.

Anonymous
i highly doubt that...

@S007 nothing in that question is check my work.
Not any of the three questions listed in the post asks for a work check.

Anonymous
Well, then I would tell you to edit that post as you think would be correct and lets see the results...whether it will be reopened

Anonymous
I dont think it will

Anonymous
@DanielSank

7:50 AM
I'm on my phone in bed so I won't, unfortunately.

Anonymous
Well :-P

I could get that reopened. 100% guaranteed.

Anonymous
I really wish to see how :-)

It needs considerable changed though because as I said, it's three questions in one, which is bad.
@S007 ugh ok getting laptop...

Anonymous
anyway im tired now...i'll get back after few hours and check it...good luck.. :-)

Anonymous
7:52 AM
@DanielSank Well no need to hurry :-P

Anonymous
take your time

Anonymous
Well, let us have a bet. If you can get that question opened within a week I will abandon the new site proposal :-D

@S007 Well wait a second.
That sounds too easy for me.
Let's establish the goals more carefully.
First, I plan to delete two of the three questions.
Are we agreed that this is ok?
If you want, you can post the ones I delete as separate, individual posts and see if they get closed.

Anonymous
Leave 1 and 3...atleast

Anonymous
ok dont post a new question

7:57 AM
@S007 I will keep 1 or 3 and propose that you pose the other one by itself.

Anonymous
ok

Good.
I will keep #1.
We agree that #2 can be deleted entirely because it's obvious how to make it a good question on Math.SE, yes?

Anonymous
yes

Ok then. Now, let me say that it is not my goal that you should abandon the new site.
My goal is to show that simply by asking good questions, i.e. by adhering to basic principles of crafting good, answerable questions, almost every question you would want on the new site can live here.

Anonymous
@DanielSank That would be good...but I need some help to keep it alive and make the rule...i alone cant do it

Anonymous
7:59 AM
we need to decide the policies together

Anonymous
I can't be the only one making rules

I am also trying to point out that while most people think these questions are closed for being homework, that's not the case. They are closed for being badly written questions.
I believe @ACuriousMind somewhat agrees with that.
(of course, some posts are just copy/paste homework problems with no actual question at all from the user. Those are obviously off topic here and in the new site, I think.)

Anonymous
@DanielSank you know what? they are marked as homework...see the close reason...i too agree with that somewhat

Anonymous
This question appears to be off-topic. The users who voted to close gave this specific reason:

"Homework-like questions should ask about a specific physics concept and show some effort to work through the problem. We want our questions to be useful to the broader community, and to future users. See our meta site for more guidance on how to edit your question to make it better" – ACuriousMind, Kyle Kanos, AccidentalFourierTransform, MAFIA36790, CuriousOne

@S007 Did you at least skim the meta post I linked above?
Here's the link again.

Hello Everybody
I had a doubt in a question
in this question doesnt the answer depend on the distance of the observer from the glass slab?
The closer the observer would be to the slab the wider would be area of bottom...

Anonymous
@OsheenSachdev Well the question assumes you see it from nearby distance

Anonymous
Keeping the eye close

@S007 so closer the eye greater would be the area...

Anonymous
yep

but then how can we determine the answer?

Anonymous
8:32 AM
keep the eye very very close to the slab

Anonymous
thats an assumption

Anonymous
its very common

okay...
@S007 i get it now...thanks

Anonymous
no probs

Anonymous
@DanielSank How's it going ? The edit ? :-)

8:40 AM
@S007 can you also try to explain what the solution given says?
Its too short and I am not able to understand it
wait won't the ray internally reflect if we keep our eye too close?
because angle i will become very large
Anybody?

@JohnRennie I wrote a meta post for several sites and also requested in their chat. We got 3 followers today. Probably we will reach 5 by today. I also asked on quora. Is this rate ok ? Usually how many followers do successful proposals on Area 51 get per day? Any idea ?

Anonymous
Do you suggest any changes btw ?

@S007 I have no idea I'm afraid. I've never done this before. I suspect it's not going to be hard to get followers because that doesn't require any effort. The hard bit is going to be getting the 40 questions. Since we can only post 5 questions each we now rely on new followrs to post the remaining 30 questions.

Anonymous
Can we contact new users in any way ? Will it be polite to leave a request on one of their answers ?

Anonymous
@JohnRennie

Anonymous
Stack Exchange doesn't give direct messages and that is a problem :/

11:06 AM
I'm not sure about leaving a comment on an answer of theirs. It would annoy me if people started doing that here. You could ask in the chat though.

Anonymous
Well, I will try to contact them by chat. If not I will leave a message on one of their old answers. If they seem annoyed I will not do it. No other option... Anyway thanks for all your help...If there is any progress I will discuss tomorrow :-)

@S007, @JohnRennie, I wholeheartedly support this proposal. I have followed it and am adding example questions.
@S007, could you please link to one of your meta posts?

hello
and thank you

so, @heather, there was something yesterday that I wanted to note, but I promised not to interfere:D Looking at the transcript, I don't think 0celo7 noted it later
(regarding infinities)

@AndrasDeak, okay =)

I'll try to not be counter-productive, maybe @0celo7 can check later if I'm saying something stupid:P But anyway:
11 hours ago, by heather
2 days ago, by 0celo7
Let $A\subset \Bbb R$, then $b\in\Bbb R$ is an upper bound for $A$ if $b\ge a$ for any $a\in A$.
11 hours ago, by heather
oh...so it is allowable. but then why isn't the word that shall not be mentioned the upper bound for every set?
I wanted to note that "$\infty$" can't be an upper bound by definition, since an upper bound $b$ is such that $b\in\Bbb R$, but $\Bbb R$ doesn't contain anything looking like an "$\infty$"
hmm...tex issues, just a sec stack overflow muscle memory:D

Your questions are good

also use up all your upvotes

@AndrasDeak, oh, makes sense. Okay, thank you!
@S007, I also created a few new meta posts...
on computer science and theoretical computer science
and also posted in those two sites' chat rooms
I'm considering posting on stack overflow

about what?

Anonymous
11:56 AM
thank you @heather. also do let your friends on Stack Exchange chat know about it...I hardly come to chat so know very few people

The physics problem solving area 51 proposal?

@AndrasDeak, indeed.

Anonymous
yeah

Anonymous
@AndrasDeak do you support? :-P

11:57 AM
@S007, I will try my best. Let me know if there's anything I can do!

@S007 short answer: I don't think so
I'd expect that something about that on meta SO would be considered noise... :/

Aw, come on =P

Anonymous
@AndrasDeak no problem !

Anonymous
:-)

I'm not sure, not really anything to lose by posting there, just don't be surprised if it gets hammered;)

11:57 AM
Yep.

Anonymous
I lost about 50 reps by posting on meta but doesn't matter...atleast i got it to notice :)

@S007 long answer is 1. I'm not sure people would be willing to solve the homeworks of others in a focused manner, which it would end up being with high probability, 2. I know that #1 is due to my experience with Stack Overflow, which probably works very different from physics.SE, which I'm unfamiliar with
Consequently I'm only watching and not getting involved in any way:) If you think this will work, I hope it'll work out for you all

Anonymous
Thanks...hope is all we have :-).

^exactly

But be aware that people on SO are thoroughly fed up by homework questions, and most people who are physics-related probably frequent physics.SE (I'm one of the exceptions though)
anyway, please let me know if you post on MSO, @heather:)

12:02 PM
@AndrasDeak, on math? There is already a post on math se

12:18 PM
@heather really, be careful. Posting the same unsolicited thing in multiple rooms can easily get you flagged:)

@AndrasDeak, don't worry, I'm going to start with only one room.
=)

good, good:)

in fact, the python room, because that's what I code in, and I didn't realize you were in it =)

yup
here's to hoping they won't give you the boot:D

indeed

12:20 PM
most rooms there will consider these messages as noise or spam, frankly
and there aren't many rooms that would be close to physics
also, if you take a look at the deleted post of S007 on meta.SO, you'll see the general stance of users

@heather Let me second what @AndrasDeak says: Many rooms consider promotion of your own proposal in rooms in which you're not a regular annoying and will rarely react well to it

@ACuriousMind, okay. I saw in a comment on S007's closed meta post to use community ads - what is that?

14
Q: Community Promotion Ads - 2016

Grace Note N.B. The size requirements for adverts have changed. It is NOT appropriate to simply copy over the images from previous years - they won't work. Images need to be 300×250px or 600×500px for retina displays, up from 220×250px in previous years. If an image is taller than it is wide, it's t...

Each site has a meta thread like that one where users can vote on which ads appear

I see...how could I create one? Or would it even be appropriate?

You would make an image in the required format and post it as an answer on that thread on the site where you want to advertise
Then you need enough interested users to vote it up so that it actually appears as an ad

12:26 PM
Okay. Thank you!

that meta post is pretty informative:)

As a remark, it's tactically much better to post new ads when that thread is renewed for 2017, I'm not sure enough people will even notice you adding a nother ad to the thread that late
It doesn't hurt to do it now, but don't expect too much

well, 6 eager users can upvote it above the threshold, right?

@ACuriousMind, okay, that makes sense. I'll keep it in mind.

and the point is that those ads will be shown on main, as I understand it

12:29 PM
@DanielSank I agree that the homework close reason is often used as a proxy for more specfic and useful close reasons. I've tried to only close things as "homework" with the mod hammer that really were just an exercise (optionally an attempt) and a "What do I do now?"
@AndrasDeak Yes, sure. But getting 6 upvotes and no downvotes on a slow-moving meta like ours will take a while unless your post hits a nerve.

yup
lot of people advertise area51 proposals in their profiles (as rene or someone noted on meta SO)

Anonymous
@ACuriousMind See john rennie, I , heather and andreas can atleast upvote it .... 4 confirmed ... and 2 more we can get I guess....btw as soon as it reaches 6 votes will it be shown ?

*andras, and I alreay said that I'm sitting this one out:)

Anonymous
ok we have another follower called nathan

from the community ad meta:

4 votes are confirmed

> Score Threshold

There is a minimum score threshold an answer must meet (currently 6) before it will be shown on the main site.

You can check out the ads that have met the threshold with basic click stats here.

Anonymous
i'll put up the ad tomorrow

@S007, no, I can create it and take care of it. I've got time.

that suggests that 6 votes plus caching will make it show

@heather yes plz do it if you get time

@S007 you have a separate area51 profile

no, its linked with my google account

oh?

Anonymous
just the name is different

but you should be able to change that on your area51 profile...
have you tried that?

12:36 PM
You people should slow down, your proposal has just been closed as a duplicate of physics.SE by Robert :P

ouch

Anonymous
maybe...i'll do it later @AndrasDeak

@ACuriousMind That doesn't sound right, though.

Anonymous
oh no

Anonymous
:-(

12:37 PM
@ACuriousMind, where can I contact Robert?

@AndrasDeak The exact reason given is: "This proposal would tend to drain audience from an existing Stack Exchange site." I guess they need to make a clear and well-argued post where the proposed scope of that site and the current scope of physics.SE are compared and found to have no overlap

yup, just found it, thanks

Anonymous
Math Overflow doesn't drain users from Math SE...that was very bad logic on his part

Anonymous
@heather rcartaino@stackexchange.com

Anonymous
send him a mail

12:39 PM
yeah I'm not sure I agree with the existence of that reason

@heather I'm not sure how exactly area 51 works, but I believe discuss.area51 is the correct place to post something about that

@ACuriousMind, yeah, I'm posting a discussion as we speak

Overlap in scope -- yes. Overlap in users -- hell no.

Anonymous
drain users---seems ridiculous....even astronomy has so much in common with physics!

I think one particular problem you face is to define your scope other than in opposition to what is on-topic here
What happens if physics.SE decides to abolish its homework policy (heaven forbid!) some time in the future?
Then your proposal is suddenly a complete subset of physics.SE
@S007 And there was significant resistance on physics.SE to having a dedicated astronomy.SE at the time. I know that some users still feel a bit sour that they went ahead with astronomy.SE anyway

12:43 PM
we could discuss the dynamics of two supermassive exchange sites spiraling towards another until their violent merger
the shockwaves would even rock askubuntu.com

Anonymous
@ACuriousMind I don't think that will ever happen. It's better to keep problem solving as different website so that Physics SE retains its original aim

Anonymous
It was never meant for students and problem solving

I think ACuriousMind is playing advocate for the devil (or something)

Anonymous
we need to explain it to Robert

Anonymous
I will mail him

12:44 PM
@ACuriousMind Is it generally true that two noncommutative observables A,B seen in the uncertainty principle can be related by a fourier transform (or generalisation of it) since they are conjugate observables?

@S007 It is meant for students. It is not, currently, meant for solving exercises.

@S007, please let me know what you think of this discussion post

@Secret No.
But "not solving exercises" is not an integral part of physics.SE's scope, it's a particular policy that is continually worked upon
The MO/math.SE split is a bad analogy because MO was founded outside the SE network and is still much more loosely associated with it than any other site
(E.g. MO doesn't display HNQ questions because they think they're silly)

ooooh, smart people!

@ACuriousMind, yes, I would agree that physics problem solving would be associated with physics. But I think that at this point not solving exercises is an integral part of physics.SE's scope - do you honestly think that at some point physics will allow homework questions?

Anonymous
12:47 PM
@heather no, never. Homework will never be allowed for sure unless there is a Revolution or World War :-P

@S007, exactly =P
Did you email Robert?

@heather No, I neither think that nor do I desire it, but still, your entire scope is defined in opposition to physics.SE. That's counter to the idea of SE sites attracting experts in a particular field simply because you can be an expert in physics but not in "answering questions physics.SE considers currently off-topic".
I'm not necessarily saying that your proposal should be closed here, but I'm trying to make you understand what I think RC and other people will hold against it.

Anonymous
@ACuriousMind I think you are mistaking our scope. Think of Physics SE as theory and Physics Problem Solving SE as numericals

@S007 What's a "numerical"?
I've seen that used by some people as if it means "exercise" but I've never found it in any dictionary

@ACuriousMind, while the scope fits in a spot that is outside of physics.SE scope, that does not mean that problem solving is a "answer questions physics considers off-topic"! It is about problem solving questions, things that are less theoretical. That's not just a in opposition to physics se; that's like saying skeptics is a bad proposal because it accepts non-mainstream physics questions.

Anonymous
12:51 PM
Physics SE is for understanding concepts and Physics Problem SE is for physics exercises and problems

right

Anonymous
@ACuriousMind It means physics problems...like the ones you find in Irodov or say Olympiads etc

and of course the questions must show work.

@S007 Ah, we're getting closer. Two objections: 1. There are kinds of questions you can ask about exercises that are also on-topic at physics.SE (like why a particular method employed in a solution actually works), so just "physics exercises" would be overlapping scope again. 2. Are there experts/professionals in "physics exercises and problems"?

@ACuriousMind, sure, yeah there are experts. Teachers.
As for number one, there's a slight bit of overlap. I don't think that's a problem.

12:54 PM
@heather Perhaps you should link to the relevant policy posts here because otherwise people have to take your word for what's on-topic here

@ACuriousMind, okay
which homework policy post, hmm

Anonymous
And say students who are preparing for Olympiads....they are not into high level theory but just enjoy UG level problem solving

Anonymous
It is not meant for researchers

Anonymous
It is meant for students

Anonymous
Just like Math SE is for students and Math Overflow for researchers

12:55 PM
Let me repeat that physics.SE is also for students. We do not ban questions because of their level. We ban a particular kind of question because we do not consider it a worthwhile use of our time to answer them.
The vast majority of questions here is not at research level in any sense

that's actually my main concern with the proposal: I find it hard to believe that many people will spend their free time solving the homeworks of others:)

@S007, I added a new sentence to the discussion
@ACuriousMind, sure. But it remains that homework questions are not allowed.

Anonymous
Yeah some hw questions...even showing considerable effort are closed

Anonymous
@AndrasDeak we already got 4 followers in 6 hours...I don't think we need to worry about traffic

@heather Teachers are experts in, well, teaching physics, they have no particular expertise in solving problems, but in explaining how to solve them. Teachers would be the group of experts for a site analogous to Mathematics Educators

12:59 PM
@ACuriousMind, and then why can't physicists be experts, just like on physics?

@heather Then you have just admitted to "draining users from physics.SE" like the duplicate notice says.
