8:00 PM
...

Wait what

WHERE IS THE ANSWER

Well?

user218912
it's not telling you xD

user218912
I knew it.

8:00 PM
What a troll

user116211
;/

Jim
This is great. I'm happy it was a countdown to waiting
2

nice

So, uh...when do we find out?

8:01 PM
Amazing, thanks PSE

user116211
WHO WON?

Jim
It's probably the case that the mod-elects have to be notified and accept the terms before they officially announce

user218912
you can download the data.

user218912
and check who won.

First election in 4 years

8:02 PM
@ACuriousMind U WON DAWG?

@MAFIA36790 It'll be decided in another election

THIS IS HISTORY BOIS

And they'll use a final election to choose which election was best

user116211
WTH.

The last election will have you choose between all the previous elections

8:03 PM
Rather anti-climatic eh

@tpg2114 Yep

user116211
Where is ACM ;/

rob
My thoughts exactly.

user218912
how could ACM not be here right now?

If I had a windows machine, I'd look at the data

user218912
8:03 PM
they must have done something to him.

But there isn't a version for linux

Jim
I was almost not here right now. I only remembered almost literally last minute

@bl00 ACM was behind it all

Wait, unless it's that obvious
The header of the file is:
5 2
1 1 2 3 0

Jim
That said, I voted for ACM, tpg, and rob because, as I said from day 1, I'm not looking for a position of authority

8:05 PM
And the names at the bottom are:
"ACuriousMind"
"Jim"
"rob"
"tpg2114"
"Alfred Centauri"
But again, the tail of the file is:
1 0 2 0 0

user218912
._.

ACM and Jim won?

So maybe that's the final breakdown and the stuff in the middle is how the progression went
Or ACM and Rob, depending on if the first line is right or the last line. Or nobody knows if all the other lines are actually important

Wouldn't it be amazing if there were a tiebreaker?

user218912
no.

8:06 PM
You're right

If somebody wants to download the software and run it, it could be settled :P

Or we could wait...

user218912
@BernardMeurer you're the compsci guy, you do it.

A few hours to a few days

Jim
@tpg2114 you get a diamond or get approached to accept any terms?

8:07 PM
@tpg2114 Already working on it.

@bl00 I only do compsci things for money
and/or sex

@HDE226868 Well, good luck then

<2 minutes to finish.

user218912
brb food.

What software?

8:07 PM
@Jim I did just sacrifice my first born and sign a bunch of stuff in blood...

Jim
@tpg2114 lol, me neither. Either no results yet or it's not us
I'm content

Only 651 people voted.
That's surprising

@SirCumference Which is more than any election ever, combined

5.3k were eligible
@tpg2114 Yeah but over 42% of people voted last election
Only 12% this time

Jim
still better turn out than in the US

8:10 PM
I found it out. Do folks want to know?

user116211
Taking more time than thought

@SirCumference Of eligible -- 30% who visited the site voted
That's not that bad

user116211
@HDE226868 YES!!

Jim
No, nobody wants to know

@HDE226868 Don't tease us

8:10 PM
@SirCumference 5.3k were eligible and only 651 people voted! than means something...

Just tell us
whistles

@J.Pak Only 2100 came to the site during the election, the other 3000 didn't even visit the site

So, uh...

@SirCumference *that

how about that weather?
@J.Pak Yep

8:12 PM
Ballot file contains 651 non-empty ballots.

Counting votes for Physics Stack Exchange Moderator Election 2016 using Scottish STV.
5 candidates running for 2 seats.

Oh wow

@tpg2114 I see

What program?

So it is the final line

Don't click on "see full text" if you don't want to know. But congrats to the winners!
@SirCumference OpenSTV; see the election page.

8:12 PM
I demand a full recount. Hanging chads and improper forms and whatnot!
Or I'll just quit and make my own site...

user116211
I KNEW IT!! I WAS RIGHT!!

So ACM is a mod?

Jim
Well done to @ACuriousMind and @rob
4

user116211
Wait, what?

user116211
Hmm.

rob
8:14 PM
I'll hold off for "official" results before I react.

user116211
congrats @rob.

Jim
hah! I had the least number of votes

Rigged, as suspected.

Jim
I'm happy about this

Clearly Jim got the most votes

user116211
8:15 PM
You shot it @ACM (stares at @0celo).

Wait, what was the order?

@Jim Yeah, can't say I'm upset either.

From most to least votes?

ACM, Rob, Alfred, Me, Jim

8:15 PM
Who even is Alfred?

user116211
@0celo7 ;((

@ACuriousMind by . . . a lot.
A lot a lot.
Over half the total ballots.

user116211
@0celo7, I told you ACM would rock the election.

Jim
Yup
Okay, back to voting how and when I please and using puns to point out obvious answers

user116211
Now all who yelled at him and made nonsense allegations in the nomination page must be dumb and speechless.

8:17 PM
@MAFIA36790 No, they'll claim it was rigged and blah blah

user116211
:(

No conspiracy theorist ever reforms
They just change theories

ACM is a man or woman?

Does it matter?

user116211
@J.Pak He is AI.

8:18 PM
@J.Pak ACM is a curious mind

I see

Jim
isn't he Alicia Keyes?

There should also be more info at elections.stackexchange.com/#physics.stackexchange, once it's updated.

@Loong Uh...bit late

user116211
@Loong, We got the new mods.

Wow, STV voting is weird

6 rounds

@tpg2114 I'd quite like to get the gender right on pronouns

Only 6 rounds? Wow.
Oh, but I suppose with only 5 candidates, it's quicker.

user116211
8:21 PM
ACM and Rob officially get the diamond now.

Jim
I'd be interested in seeing the breakdown of 1st 2nd 3rd choices

rob
@Jim I think that's the raw content of the "download election results" file.

@MAFIA36790 They have to swear eternal allegiance to Stack Exchange sign the mod agreement first.

@HDE226868 Has anyone not?

Congrats @rob and @ACuriousMind

user116211
8:23 PM
@HDE226868 But the diamonds are visible now.

@SirCumference No idea.

I shall return to lurking on the questions
2

Any quick insights on how the "surplus" votes get chosen?

Jim
@rob hmmm, it's not worth downloading a new program just to view them

@Jim HDE posted it

user116211
8:24 PM
Anyways, I'm off now; I'll have sweet dreams.

@SirCumference . . . and it wasn't worth downloading.
@MAFIA36790 Oh, strange. But cool.

rob
@Jim if you're a unix/textfile person, it looks pretty parseable. Data rows start with a 1, end with a zero, and have three other entries which are probably first, second, and third choices.

@HDE226868 Well we got the results 7 mins before it was officially released

user218912
back.

user218912
yay

8:26 PM
@HDE226868 So you saved us ~420 seconds

user218912
lol

@rob Plz don't ban me

user116211
@BernardMeurer Ask ACM too ;)

How does that voting thing even work? All those rounds and stuff

user218912
or you could ask him to ban you if you're wasting too much time in the chat.

user218912
8:28 PM
I will do that someday.

@BernardMeurer Here's a good explanation
5 mins

@SirCumference Okay, so it's magic I will never know
5 minutes is too much to understand this

It uses the animal kingdom as an example
It's not complicated

@EmilioPisanty Possibly relevant (see first two answers): meta.stackexchange.com/q/77541/274942

@SirCumference Animals are complicated

user218912
8:30 PM
@SirCumference implying humans aren't animals?

@BernardMeurer Fine, here's an explanation. Instead of picking only one candidate, you rank them from most to least favorite.

@HDE226868 so Meek STV handles fractional votes with impunity?

When the election is over, the person in last place is eliminated, and all his votes get added to the candidates who were liked the most

I guess that's actually pretty cool.

8:32 PM
Next round, eliminate most disliked, and transfer votes to most liked
Rinse, repeat

@EmilioPisanty Nice, huh?

If someone has already reached a threshold for amount of votes necessary, then votes get transferred to the second-most-voted candidate

@HDE226868 Yeah. It feels weird, like real weird. But I guess, why not.
@SirCumference No, that's not correct.
See HDE's link above.

@EmilioPisanty Screw it, I'm too lazy to read into it again

40 users only voted for ACM with no second choice

8:39 PM
@Loong, because ACM will be a great moderator.
to the new moderators

So, uh...
what's up?
Hey ACM

Heyhey

Congrats

user218912
ACM's name is blue :D

@ACuriousMind You won by over half the votes o_o

8:50 PM
Thanks everyone for the congratulations and support
4

@bl00 Oh yeah
Or is it bl00?

@ACuriousMind, congrats!! So awesome you become moderator. You'll be great for the site.
=)

@bl00 huh, the team acts quickly

rob
8:55 PM
So, officially: thanks for your support, everybody, and I'll try to do a good job.
4

So now it's official

@rob, you'll do a great job. See my comment to ACM, that also applies here. =)

Can someone explain to me why @JohnRennie has no diamond next to his name?

@SirCumference because he's not a moderator

8:56 PM
@DavidZ Yes, but he has an italicized name and is a room owner

@SirCumference Not all ROs are mods. ROs can be added manually by a user with certain access, or automatically by the system.

@HDE226868 So does anyone how he hasn't run in any elections so far?
He seems like overkill for the moderator position
He has > 200 rep
Sigh...

@SirCumference He doesn't want to, last I heard. After all, we don't forcibly nominate other people to be moderators ;-)

Huh, that's really bizarre

You mean the horse head in my bed wasn't from you?

8:59 PM
Considering he moderates the site as it is. 1850 flags...

Q: Why are gauge theories called so?

MartinWhy are gauge theories called so? I guessed it was because gauge also means to estimate, so when one is trying to find the gauge theory for such and such interactions one has to estimate what might be the best gauge group for that interaction. Does this make sense?

Off-topic, cf. e.g. this meta post? There doesn't seem to be a gram of physics there.

Does anyone know what the matrix is that represents a controlled pi/2 rotation gate in quantum computing? For that matter, what's the matrix for a pi/2 rotation gate?
@Qmechanic, I think it is off-topic; I voted to close under a custom close reason saying it belongs on history of science/mathematics.
@SirCumference, yes, but he is such an awesome poster, moderating might take up too much of his posting time, if that makes sense. Though I agree with you that he'd be awesome at it. =)

@heather that's not actually a reason for a question to be off topic, you know. If you think a question belongs on HSM, the "magic" wording to use is "I'm voting to close this question as off topic because it is about history, not physics." (And then you can add something about HSM)

@DavidZ, I edited my comment; I don't know if that reworded the close reason.

@Qmechanic I'm sort of torn about that. It's a terminology question, in some sense, and I can see an argument for why understanding the meaning of "gauge" is of more than historical relevance. On the other hand, it's a rather weak argument.
@heather I don't think the close reason is actually recorded anywhere other than the comment.

@DavidZ you see it in the close vote review queue as a close reason

9:37 PM
oh OK. Well, then, at least I don't think it's obvious anywhere other than the comment.

Ok, well I edited that, so all's well.

10:06 PM
So who are the mods?

rob
@0celo7 It's ACuriousMind and me. meta.physics.stackexchange.com/questions/9256/…

Ok, so the earlier results were accurate.
Congratulations @rob @ACuriousMind

rob
Thanks!
Like I said earlier: I'll try to do a good job.

Now ACM has the power to instantly close questions. Wonder how he feels about that.
@ACuriousMind Will you continue to VTC like you used to?

@0celo7 I've explicitly said in my questionnaire answers that I will use the unilateral votes more sparingly.
@0celo7 And thanks

10:14 PM
@ACuriousMind Ok
@ACuriousMind want to help me with probability :)

poker cards again?

No, this time it's immunizations
the question is trivial but I'm bad at this axiomatic stuff
642 people in a school
125 need to be vaccinated
12% of people will be absent on average
how many of the 125 will be absent on average
it's clearly .12*125 but I have no clue why

I'm not sure I understand what your problem is

Why is the answer .12*125

rob
You're assuming that needing to be absent is independent of needing to be vaccinated.

10:23 PM
yes

user218912
@Obliv hey

rob
So 12% of the 125, plus 12% of the (642-125) who don't need vaccinations, gives 12% of the total.

@bl00 hiya

@rob this is an axiomatic probability course

@0celo7 why don't you try observing the derivatives of the functions on their manifolds before you start asking PhD level probability questions

10:24 PM
what?

rob
@0celo7 I'm not sure quite what you mean by that title; can you elaborate?

@rob I have to write something like: Let $X$ be a random variable where $X=1$ denotes a student being present and $X=0$ denotes a student being absent. <-- Stuff like that
Then define a PDF $p_X$

rob
So the class is where you learn to translate statements like "assume that needing to be absent is independent of needing to be vaccinated" in mathematical notation?

yes
not a good class

rob
Well ... good luck

10:31 PM
@0celo7 have you tried asking on MSE? I'm sure they'd give you the mathematical answer you're looking for
or try room36 as always

I figured it out.

rob
Enlighten us?

"indpendence" means that the PDF is constant on the sample space

user218912
@Obliv which university are you planning on transferring to?

@bl00 trump university

10:32 PM
Let $S$ be the space of students

user218912
@Obliv ...

$V\subset S$ is the space of students that need vaccinations
$X$ is the random variable of a student being absent or present
So $$E(X|_V)=\sum_{x\in V}xp_X(x)=\sum_{x\in V}1\cdot 0.12=0.12|V|.$$

what's E

Expectation

that is so silly

user218912
10:35 PM
I'm so bad at probability.

is that why you dropped your stat. mech class @bl00

user218912
I didn't 0.o

oh then you're still taking it?

user218912
yes

thought you said you dropped it o:

user218912
10:36 PM
dropped condensed matter.

user218912
because I wasn't learning anything.

ohh ok

user218912
but still learning condensed matter on my own.

user218912
still not 100% sure I want to do GR.

user218912
@Obliv also the stuff we do in that class is related to probability in a different way.

user218912
10:38 PM
it's not like solving probabilities like 0celo7 is doing which I am bad at.

@bl00 did you take notes/do practice problems when learning calc 1-3 in hs

user218912
I did practice problems.

user218912
no notes because I can't fucking read my own handwriting, which was even worse in high school.

LOL @bl00 yeah I'm wondering what the point of taking notes are except to maybe keep theorems somewhere in case you want to refer to them

flagging

10:42 PM
but most of them are still in the textbooks that I can just flip back anyway

user218912
@Obliv basically what I did was watch mit ocw in 3x speed, and read the book if I didn't understand something.

user218912
@0celo7 liar.

user218912
I'm not banned so obviously the 10k users didn't find it to be offensive.

@0celo7 do that and you will be at the mercy of our new fuhrer. (aka none)

@ACuriousMind won't ban me

10:45 PM
can you unban people @acuriousmind
jw

user218912
yes he can.

@0celo7 I will ban you if you do something ban-worthy.
@Obliv I can.

user218912
owned

@ACuriousMind Lol
I don't believe it for a second.

Well, I don't advise you to test that belief ;P

user218912
10:50 PM
he's not a physicist.

@ACuriousMind What's something ban-worthy?
btw my probability thing was wrong
no clue how to do this

user218912
@0celo7 well you have said some really bad things and deleted them immediately before.

@0celo7 how was it wrong? wtf

I haven't said anything really bad lol
@Obliv Well, it was completely wrong
Let $S$ be the space of students. $X:S\to\Bbb R$ is the number of students who come to school on a given day.
Then $E(X)=0.12|S|$.

maybe you need to clarify axioms: 1. px applies to whole space S. 2. V is a subset of the space S. then px applies to V by axioms then what you said should be correct no?

10:54 PM
I have no clue how to do this formally

god these students are so obnoxious in this mit ocw lecture. the professor saves time by erasing the chalkboard while it's moving and he cleans the chalkboard before the next board covers it. then theres like a 15 second applause for him like what
brb

user218912
@Obliv I remember that.

user218912
he does it a lot of times.
