@RhysW Is that a theoretical calculation or empirical observation? :P
2

@MichaelBrown Neither. It is experience.

@MichaelBrown you learn a lot through experience

Well the random walk models probably need revision then. Maybe your experience will be your ticket to glory ;)

If he closes his eyes he will never make it to the pit, as you walk in a really big circle when that happens xD

4:21 PM
@CrazyBuddy If the velocity vector of the bound object is the same as the attached mass, nothing happens.

4:34 PM
@hwlau I actually figured that out..!!! You people only respond after the message dies...
Okay... everyone

How many of you often get confused by the very basic things sometimes?
I mean, you people know it. But, you get confused sometimes. You'll figure that out (but, quite lately)
@hwlau Actually, the large body is a black hole. The orbiting body was a spaceship. He told me that he's gonna factor its original mass by 100...

@hwlau @crazy In the aerospace business that call that maneuvre a docking. :) First worked out in Gemini 8, which got... interesting... but it proved Neil Armstrong could handle out of control space craft, partially leading to his selection for Apollo
just trivia

ahh... Ohh... :)

I do
The more people know me the less they say I'm smart :)

@MichaelBrown I usually don't let people know about me... ;-)
But, nowadays, I'm contradicting that :P

4:47 PM
:)

And, everyone should thank me for drugging Michael Brown, that he comes to our chat everyday :D
What about my new name? Wizardy Buddy :P

Oh I just leave the tab open, checking sporadically. Drugging is likely though :P
Nice name
anyway it's well past my bed time
have fun

@MichaelBrown Hey... Mostly everyone should do that unless it's a session, when messages flow rapidly..! :D
@MichaelBrown Physicists shouldn't sleep... I'm (Manish too) your inspiration if you like :P
Gd night :)

@CrazyBuddy @MichaelBrown In term of orbiting, there is nothing special about a black hole than a sun far away. Before docking, they will try to make sure the speed is the same, if it works, then no problem
@CrazyBuddy I am not always looking at it, just check occasionally. I am working so I don't want to be disturb. Just hangover here at leisure time so it never my high priority. I think most other are the same, probably except moderators and you.

5:45 PM
@hwlau Nah... I was just kidding :)
@hwlau I know... But more the mass, the object orbits faster & faster...
If the speed is maintained constant, the orbit gets smaller and finally ripped off by tidal forces... (within Roche limit)

@ManishEarth that's crazy - i've never heard of QM being taught to freshmen in the US
