So … you’re not into boat programming?
oh is that what this is about, woosh on my part

7 hours later…
08:20
I think this is my favorite way to locate wp-config.php I've ever seen . . . .https://gist.github.com/3998108
haha nice one... you could do that with loop if you really(really(really(really($wantto))))
I like it with color coding... like a beautiful blue tide... art, not code :)
ASCII art yeah.. reminds me of those BBS and IRC days...

1 hour later…
09:30
how to avoid empty search in wordpress 3.1.2
@srini I answered that question on the site a while ago, if you do a search you'll find 3 solutions
but seriously, upgrade to 3.4.x
most answers and solutions will only work for the newer versions of WP, and it's insecure to run 3.1.2, I feel sorry for you if you've been hemmed into that situation by clients who won't test their code with newer versions but really, upgrade
I think I am still running one of my sites on a pre 3.0 version :)
@userabuser beats with the disco stick
hehe.. I know I know.. bad... but, its still chugging along earning money and besides most of the code on there... well if I update, booooom! I'll get it to it though....
Hey Mr. T, can I borrow your jQuery kung fu for a minute or two?
@userabuser that depends, I cant spend a lot of time in the day doing those else ill get in trouble
09:42
Its ok. I'll paste a fiddle link, if you can look it great, if not, no problem. Its basic problem but I am overlooking something. Just a sec... (like I said, if you can't no problem)
jsfiddle.net/pusher/PZQt4/1 this allows me to page to the next DIV by animating the wrapper left or right using left/right arrow keys. However if you try and page left/right very quickly, the calculation gets thrown out of whack. I'm after a way to stop that, either by dequeing or checking if animation before firing the key request, but so far my efforts are in vein.
Hello all.
I have a quick question for WP experts. What is a "num_query" ?
Think you are talking about this mate, codex.wordpress.org/Class_Reference/wpdb
Which can also be achieved with, <?php echo get_num_queries();?> (codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/get_num_queries)
09:58
Thnx. I have a site I'm trying to find why it's response time is slow and i'm less than novice in WP.
@TomJNowell my empty search give some results how to avoid kitchco-dev.com
I was also given a debug file (from this plugin I think: bueltge.de/wordpress-performance-analysieren-plugin/558 ) which had this "num_query"
Any pointers on where and how to start? Does it make sense to start removing plugins (one by one) to check whether one of them is the main problem?
@ypercube yes that makes sense
though debugbar might be a better plugin
@srini it was the second result in the search for "empty search" on the wpse site
10:15
I quite like the blackbox debug bar also...
@TomJNowell thanks buddy
@TomJNowell @userabuser OK, thnx.
All these plugin adds (and deactivations) are done through an Admin panel, right?
Thank you all. That ends my novice interruptions.
No problem :) All have to start somewhere right..
10:34
@userabuser jsfiddle no loading
or you mean in general?
...if so cool, np... thanks anyway.
@userabuser the problem is simple, you're not waiting for the animation to finish before starting a new one
or cancelling the existing one when starting a new one etc etc
10:57
@TomJNowell Thanks for that, I tried what you mentioned before and that doesn't do the trick. If you page left or or right rapidly in succession, you'll see the wrapper left: ___ ; CSS property come out of whack quickly. Ultimately the wrapper needs to align with start of the left DIV element and always return to left:0px when you arrive back at the first element. This is my problema... :)
@userabuser the problem I saw was it bouncing back and forwards if you did the arrows too fast and stopped it would continue bouncing
instead of basing it off of the current position, which is what your doing at the moment
instead calculate adn save the widths of all elements beforehand
then add those up to arrive at the new left position based on the index instead
it puts all the work at the beginning, and it removes a dom query
ah good point, the thing is in production I won't know the widths before hand because the images are resizable on browser resize
that's why in my example I am calculating on fly... to simulate real world use
@userabuser then recalculate on the resize event
even still
hmm
ok I didn't think of that
there's nothing stopping you calculating it on the fly by querying all elements in elems on keypress
total should = SUM of every elements width WHERE element index < currentIndex
at the moment total = position of current index element, which could be mid-animation giving a compounding error, hence your issue
11:04
ah ha
and you should add Stop anyway
an improvement might be to only call stop if the movement changes direction
would .stop(true, true) be necessary at all?
11:20
try it
11:51
I shall fiddle :)
12:28
@kaiser @toscho thanks for picking up that edit, I obviously did not read the latter part of his comment.. but that makes it clear now, thought it was plausible. Cheers.
n/p
12:41
@userabuser Code edits changing the inner logic are almost always invalid anyway.
12:54
thanks mate
question: how do the community edits/rejects/accepts work... noticed that they rejected a second of his edits, they being community?
@userabuser link to edit?
super-var-dump … uppercase HTML tags? :)
...would be good to see the explanation why its rejected, you know for education/learning purposes
@toscho just in case you miss them? ha
@userabuser That happened because you, the author, edited that post just two minutes before. There is a grace period (five minutes I think), and all your edits during that time will be seen as one edit.
13:01
ahh
In short: The community mod protected your ninja edits.
ahh daniel san
Basic rule: Do not edit other members post during the grace period.
(unless you’re a mod)

Q: Add a reject reason when the Community user rejects an edit

toschoWhen the Community user rejects an edit during the grace period there is no obvious reason visible (example). This causes some confusion for the user who suggested the edit. tag overflow :)
my PhpStorm is like "Where did crapload of code and repositories go!? Wait, that's a good thing! gets snappier"
Why can't I access meta with my SO useraccount?
@userabuser original meta is less coupled to site
ahh thanks mate!
13:26
meta.so is special, you have to create a new account connected to your SO account.
hoops... jumping through hoops I tell you
my only public work plugin went poof... open source impact from that gig is now zero :)
@Rarst ?
@kaiser what?
exactly. see to what I replied to...
13:36
deleting work stuff...
ah. k.
you deleted it? or they did?
my, local :)
surely cant get a copy elsewhere?
Google deprecated image charts API? I&%*&%*!!! fuck.
13:40
i take it you relied on those? :)
@Rarst FUCK
not you. Big G.
Had a QR Code class running on it...
@userabuser ah, you mean plugin? work deleted repo, client is probably moving on to newer service of their and no longer need it
ah ok
time to release your own plugins then
@kaiser I had worked a ton with it and tinkered with PHP wrapper for years!
> We will use commercially reasonable efforts to continue to operate the Google Chart Tools without these changes until April 20, 2015
puh
13:42
@userabuser yep! working on Improved Comment Moderation for release now
nice!
cant rely on any of G's APIs for core business unless you have fall back...
@Rarst Ok. That's a nice difference. My whole effort have been ~4hours to get it running.
@kaiser I've been working on it since freaking 2009...
@Rarst But not developing it. Just on it. Right?
@kaiser ~2k lines of code, one major rewrite...
13:45
> While image charts are being deprecated, Google Chart Tools will keep on poviding interactive charts based on HTML5 technology. developers.google.com/chart The development of these tools will be the focal point of the team in the future, since we expect the usage of static image charts will gradually phase out by 2015.
- Michael FinkApril 24, 2012 1:11 AM
Basic lesson: Either it’s a Google API or you can rely on it.
muhaha
@kaiser JS version was working in parallel, it's survivor rather than replacement... and if I need JS graphs I will go and get myself JS lib without Google involvement whatsoever
@kaiser takes a minute to load.
13:49
also Image Charts were easiest way to get map image for free :\
@Rarst @toscho Did I somewhere state that I like, favor, support it or find that somehow kool?
@kaiser Did we say you said that?
@kaiser I just meant that replacement is not accurate word for it
Have I ever asked a rhetorical question?
hehe
13:51
lol
@toscho I guess I'm just too used to my cellmates defaults when he says "takes XY to load"...
@Rarst Including regional maps... I even started ripping pathes out there, which worked out quite well (not that I got any idea how to place them on an actual map).
crap, now I will really have to learn JS properly... :)
so close
@Rarst What context you want to use maps for free btw? In a plugin?
@Rarst I started doing basic Ruby tutorial yesterday to prepare myself for Capistrano. Much more worth the time, but sadly pretty close to JS. #{var.capitalize} ... meh
13:53
@kaiser Say it isn't so!
@userabuser I don't want to use it right now but this is exactly why I worked on that wrapped - it gave me a toolkit of stuff always ready
@userabuser nope. can't.
@kaiser I will do Ruby on codecademy after Python :) stuck in the middle of HTML/CSS course and then jQuery
@Rarst Well.. if you ever need to use it for free in a paid scenario you can offer that portion of your work as "free" and the rest as an premium add-on. That I believe suffices to meet policy.
@kaiser I will never look at you the same again. Next I will hear about you buying a Mac book sipping caffee latte in wireless cafe`
@userabuser Lenovo comes next week and I'm planning sipping Melange in wireless Café. :)
13:56
quietly uninstalls ruby...
ahh nice... which one you get?
@userabuser Do you like messing with Git?
@userabuser lenovo T430u
I am now really glad I pushed those licensing changes through and can use things like Flot in repo...
on topic of notebooks still thinking if I should buy one again... upcoming Aser Series 7 are insane, but would probably cost a ton
@Rarst GF gets herself a samsung series 9. Pretty kool thing and damn light weight with 1.5kg
@kaiser that too! I just saw yesterday they are doing new revision for Win8 - better screen, better internals, even less weight. but not a sensor
@kaiser Nice...
@kaiser I don't know if I'd say like it.. but mess with it yeah... (maybe impartial) :)
14:01
@Rarst She'll get old model with non-shiny display. Pretty cheap too.
@userabuser Capistrano will take that off of your shoulders.
@kaiser how cheap? been stuck around $1300 forever here
@Rarst far below that. ~25-30% less. She's a teacher and gets extra discount too.
@kaiser good for her :)
maybe I should just buy cheap B113 Acer... the only diff to ultrabook are less posh and hard drive (need to look up if replaceable)
Yea for me too. As I'm still inscribed at university, I get around the same discount for mine.
14:05
@Rarst Shop with prices w/o discount for lenovo. - austrian shop/german lang
Lenovo is weird soometimes... they had fantastic U300s model and they replaced it with U310 which has worse specs and much heavier :(
@kaiser Have you tried this then? peritor.com/en/products/webistrano
..what about Phing?
...and what about Composer for PHP or does that differ too much from what Caspitrano can do? The former for dependency management.
@userabuser nope. haven't. Looking at it right now. Too many unknown things on this.
@userabuser composer is install, not deployment
I will very likely to build whatever I need on Phing going forward...
@userabuser Point is that I still haven't found my perfect setup. But it's along the lines of having bunch of default files/fodlers that I have in mu-plugins, which I can then tow into package and deploy to server(s). Idea of Capistrano is having one file where I can just code and don't need to write things on command line. I hate that.
@userabuser Lots of dependencies: Rake + Sudo + Rails + Mongrel(?)
14:11
@kaiser I'm not fan of command either... I'd much rather config and deploy too. But to go the route of Ruby... I wonder the worth or how I can apply it to my situation to make it useful enough. I mean with Git, how much better do you think that process of interacting is with Casp?
@kaiser I've been thinking about similar kinds of things as I've begun using mu-plugin dir more and more over last couple months.. right now I still install new WP copy for each client project on local machine and that's getting tedious.
@userabuser In my - pretty naive - vision of it, it is simply coding the deployment process down into one of more files and then write gem deploy into command line. Thing is that I just like it when I got a file where I write everything, as this opens the door for debugging. Command line is like hit-enter-key aliasOf( fire-and-forget ).
@userabuser I moved to a single MU install for that. Much easier to handle.
fire and hope!
I thought about MU but then I wonder what if any cases/gotchas there are with API? I'd assume not many if any right?
// Ruby on the command line:
def whats_up( tellme )
puts "This is the point of no return. Now say #{tellme}!"
end
↑ Not funny. Typo is ... @%#$!§?
@userabuser Use it just like normal. The nice thing is that MU is mostly on top of single site install.
14:24
I have perverted desire to frame this file on the wall github.com/retlehs/roots/blob/master/templates/head.php
@kaiser hmmm... I know time is of the essence - but why couldn't we do this with PHP?
@Rarst I have non-perverted desire to get myself a toilet paper role with "Roots Theme" code printed on it.
@userabuser How would you handle version control, etc. + deployment + symlinks, etc. via PHP? And why doing it when we already got something ... Capistrano?
I can't wrap my head around having the head separated from the header file...
I tried to do it myself in my experimental theme but I still found suitable way to not repeat requests for header without separating that logic...
...nice XML build script for Phing! fark that.
14:30
function is_element_empty($element) {
  $element = trim($element);
  return empty($element) ? false : true;
}
I should stop looking at it...
@Rarst I had named that maybe_empty() to adhere to the WordPress coding standard.
no, keep going pleasant surprises to be had.
I prefer potentially_empty or hypothetically_empty
emptii()
14:32
@toscho you forgot the is_ prefix
@toscho Gold!
hypothetically_dont_need_a_prefix_called_is
  // Add post/page slug
  if (is_single() || is_page() && !is_front_page()) {
    $classes[] = basename(get_permalink());
  }
that's, uhm, one way to get slug...
@kaiser github.com/CodeMeme/Phingistrano Phingistrano?
@kaiser that's what happens when you go over to the yuppy-side!
@kaiser That’s text-decoration: random, you philistine!
14:41
haha
@toscho mea maxima culpa
could do better baseline alignment with notepad lines at least
we should do a flash mob one day to submit pull requests fixing all the stuff in that theme... :)
that would be hilarious... 400 patches and pull requests
@userabuser Installing phing sudo pear ... ha. no.
14:43
Ahhh what were you phingking? ops
Dependency: PHPUnit ... didn't you listen how hard I failed on this one?
@kaiser screw pear. checkout phing from github and kick point of entry into working
@kaiser Yes, I listened, and laughed as I watched your drama
@userabuser And all with the same commit message: Fixing the obvious.
@Rarst Maybe on Laptop next week.
14:44
@toscho haha.. you give the guy a complex like that ;)
@toscho Now we got a title.
@userabuser I think I saw one of devs clash with Chip wihout a dent (over rewriting to "clean" URLs), more dense than that
I would delete my repo in that case.
i also like You're _doing_it_wong without the rrrrr
@Rarst Serious? I didn't know it was that drastic... Stay away, far away then. That's just sad.
is there a reason default_excerpt hook doesn't run in wp admin post list?
wp-admin/includes/post.php
446: $post->post_excerpt = apply_filters( 'default_excerpt', $post_excerpt, $post );
is the only place, and i don't think that's used in wp_list_table
14:47
@toscho When you clash with Chip?
@kaiser never?
@lkraav Why would it? What are you trying to do?
@toscho word?

Q: How to disable automatic excerpt generation *in admin*?

lkraavI'm adding a custom column named Excerpt with Codepress Admin Columns, and would like to know specifically when the Excerpt has not been filled out. Instead WordPress shows post content automatically, if the excerpt is missing. This is also testable by switching on the "Excerpt View" from post li...

trying to do this
@kaiser No idea, what you are talking about …
14:49
@toscho The same here.
:D
@lkraav If the excerpt in admin is controlled by get_the_excerpt then it will fall back to post content
@songdogtech Come here in chat. Just follow the link.
Not sure if that helps you?
i'll ack get_the_excerpt, sec
14:51
Attitude is everything when you’re representing the #WordPress community, please try to be civil and respectful https://twitter.com/Otto42/status/264171226900099072
aw, someone expected Otto to be polite... :)
@userabuser Phingistranos readme is a fucking book. Would need the whole weekend just reading it - understanding would still be another topic.
hahahaha
PHP style!!
@kaiser You just summozed the gods and they comez?
Can't say I've been here before....
@songdogtech hi
I had to look around for the chat link....
14:54
The WPSE UI isn't the best, but what shall we say...
@songdogtech To get to your question: What's your exact problem with that even/odd?
! has_excerpt() AND $even_odd = '';
@kaiser damn, forgot about that :) off to delete answer
@Rarst Wut?
Ah, it gets added to both the_content and the_excerpt, so I'm trying to find a way to only add it to the_excerpt. That way, the_content doesn't get chopped into 2 columns. Looks like the artlcle class needs to change be added in the `else { the_excerpt(); } as well as earlier.
@kaiser I invented same thing for answer :)
@Rarst hehe
@songdogtech Just place ! has_excerpt() AND $even_odd = ''; right below the definition of $even_odd. This way it empties it for posts that have no excerpt set.
14:58
I'm just a php beginner, regardless of my inflated reputation.
Yea, n/p.
haha.. Kaiser you just indirectly corrected an answer to another question?
hm? not that I know of.
yes he did...
! has_excerpt
What a machine.
14:59
@userabuser @Rarst I just don't get your point, but lemme finish this with @songdogtech first, k?
@songdogtech Check the following line in my answer:
$even_odd = ( 0 === $GLOBALS['wp_query']->current_post % 2 ) ? 'even' : 'odd';
Then just place the following right below it
@kaiser we have two excerpt questions colliding in chat
! has_excerpt() AND $even_odd = '';
@kaiser You corrected @Rarst answer to @lkraav's question. :)
OK, let me flip over to that....
@Rarst Damn. Forgot about @lkraav
15:00
wait wait
im getting ocnfused
i now did find
530 if ( 'excerpt' == $mode && current_user_can( 'read_post', $post->ID ) )
531 the_excerpt();
wp-admin/includes/class-wp-posts-list-table.php
!has_confusion
i think i should be able to run the filter after all
hehe
but its maybe something other than default_excerpt?
@lkraav the_excerpt is called in class-wp-posts-list-table.php
@lkraav As said, !has_excerpt($id) should help you no?
function has_excerpt( $id = 0 ) {
	$post = &get_post( $id );
	return ( !empty( $post->post_excerpt ) );
}
15:06
hmmm, so i basically override has_excerpt
that's a function that you can use to test for existence of excerpt..
OK, it looks like this: ` $even_odd = ( 0 === $GLOBALS['wp_query']->current_post % 2 ) ? 'even' : 'odd';
! has_excerpt() AND $even_odd = '';`
but we need a ( or ) or two?
@lkraav you can either add_filter for the_excerpt or get_the_excerpt which the former is wrapper for.
¿¡has_confusion¡¿
@songdogtech that's only core 3.5
15:16
How can I style different types of post in my wordpress theme
benlevywebdesi: probably a good idea to try a search in WPSE first to see what's already been answered; there are lots of answers for that kind of question.
@songdogtech What should I look for?
An answer to your question
@songdogtech What do you mean by "two"?
@songdogtech And maybe it's better to just throw the $even_odd away. It was just part of the example - you maybe don't even need it.
Parenthesis
What?
3 > $wp_query->current_post AND $even_odd = '';
↑ Just from looking at your request, you don't need it after the third post, righ?
15:25
yes, excerpts don't need the even/odd.
@songdogtech No. Paranthesis are just there fore readablities sake
@songdogtech Then add this line I showed above right after the statement that defines $even_odd in the first place. Will do an update
Parenthesis?
Would really appreciate seeing the whole code chunk; I'm getting confused.
@songdogtech updated answer
what should i look for?
but once im there what should I search for?
anu
anu
LOL
...
benlevywebdesi: that's a search link; read the search results and code examples. And if needed, narrow down your question and post your own question in WPSE.
Now that is nice in Ruby:
set :secret_keys, open('https://api.wordpress.org/secret-key/1.1/salt/').read
Then just "#{secret_keys}"
ah, ok I found this question:
http://wordpress.stackexchange.com/questions/49601/css-for-custom-post-types
and I understand most of how they do it but unsure about how to include the code in the loop
@toscho smoooth...
I haven't really learned much about other files that you can create as templates for wp
@songdogtech Why the edit? Do you now want the first three posts have the excerpt?
15:44
Ah, I was going to tell you: the excerpt and content needed to be reversed in`2<= $wp_query->current_post ? the_excerpt() : the_content();`
It was showing excerpts first instead of content; I discovered that yesterday, forgot about it until now.
@songdogtech Why? This would mean that the first two (or three? Is current_post starting at 0 or 1?) have the excerpt.
@songdogtech Then you'd need to turn the $even_odd around also.
It's actually working now; we're getting odd/even classes only on excerpts. Looks like all I need to do is tweak the CSS for the even/odd.
Using my state-of-the-art IDE called a localhost wordpress install....
Ok, I've narrowed down my question: How do I style a post to show an image full size and not a smaller image like in this example: demo.kreativethemes.com/evolution/2011/12/31/image
@benlevywebdesign Improve your question on the main site, not in chat.
@toscho I can ask a question with out giving any code in the beginning?
15:51
@benlevywebdesign You can, but you should not. It is always useful to show where exactly you got stuck.
Cool. Getting there. Except for paging needs to go somewhere: <?php twentyeleven_content_nav( 'nav-below' ); ?> And that should be echo rather than the full function?
I am stuck at how to style post differently. I have no new code to give so, should I give a shorten version of my post loop?
@songdogtech You're talking about the twentysomething nav piece?
Yes, paging needs to be called, I guess above the // endif; ?
@benlevywebdesign Oh, now remember that question. Yes, add the necessary code to your new question and try to ask in way that the question could be useful for future visitors.
15:56
@songdogtech Yea after the loop.
@songdogtech Else it would be added after each post, right?
and this time my question better not get imported over to SO
@benlevywebdesign Ask pure HTML, CSS or JavaScript questions on Stack Overflow, WordPress specific questions on WPSE.
@userabuser guess you'll get nuked for that dirty laughing
15:59
Should it be hoho?
maybe heeeharrrheee
Oh my. "The Bridge" (chat from games.SE site) is in the middle of "flag him" season.
@userabuser Can't get rid of the feeling that you now have to live in constant fear.
Do I? News to me... If I should should starting acting scared let me know, I want to know play the part?
don't like to disappoint :)
16:16
@userabuser You're playing a very risky game, my friend :)
add_filter( "get_the_excerpt" ended up being the key
@userabuser Btw: Did the plugin then work for you?
thanks @userabuser
@lkraav Either filter will do it.. as mentioned one is a wrapper for the other too. :)
@userabuser I mean the post type archive plugin? Found the problem in my case - typo in wp-config.php file...
16:18
@kaiser Yep.. sure did, no errors, no problems in the end. I like it. Cleanest implementation thus far.
Absolutely. Will have to get back @StephenHarris this weekend.
@kaiser If I am playing a risky game let me know because I'd actually like to play... feel I'm getting cheated here on some fun.
@userabuser: codepress admin columns uses get_the_excerpt(). the_excerpt filter didn't react to that.
@kaiser any reason why core hasn't patched that yet?
@userabuser You asking me about thoughts from core devs? haha!
16:20
@lkraav for post columns/custom post columns? the_excerpt works for me too...
@kaiser haha fell for that one...
but really, its a CPT arch, should be native you'd think.
@lkraav Ok just read your comment on ?ion.... yes if that plugin is hooking into different filter yeah you need to as well.
@userabuser As well as tax archives
But for reference normally either would work... but may as well go for the real function at hand
...I think Stephen has a solution for that one too no? Or am I thinking of someone else...
@userabuser Nope, hasn't so far. Would need to split this into three files: Base/Abstract class + one for tax + one for pt
Already thinking about it, but I just don't want to fiddle with the tax nav link
I have a css related question: I have a comment count for my posts on the side of the post and the post could be as long as the content for the post, is it possible to position the comment count element to be on the side at the bottom of each post
see what I am talking about here http://benlevywebdesign.com/wordpress/
@benlevywebdesign position relative on post, position absolute on the comment count
16:31
@TomJNowell thanks
I know all about css positioning and stuff but just wasn't sure how because the post can be any length
Ugh, @Brady handled 12 flags today!
@toscho nooooooo...
… and left the dirty work (destroying a spam account) for me.
16:47
@kaiser and all: Thanks for the help! I'll keep working on the loop. A visitor showed up and my dog has been staring at me for hours; have to feed her and get her outside :)
@TomJNowell just realized my comment count has a css arrow and so its positioned relative already so I don't know if I am going to be able to do it yet
