@StephenHarris Thanks. Was asking because of that question...
the universe is a checksum, haven't you heard
Did you know that my calls to post_class() for some reason don't get triggered on the server?
And did you know that I'm close to argh ?
Damn it! It's the same %&@§ thing as with the 404 page. No post ID, No post_class(). This bug is killing me...
00:51
It is gone! All questions are gone!

Q: THE SITES, ZAY ARE FAILINK!

Journeyman GeekThere seems to be some performance issues going on - the active tabs/main pages are empty, things are intermittently loading and not loading, and.. well.. the sites arn't running like clockwork like they usually do. I'm seeing blank front pages here, SU, SF and on Ask Ubuntu at least. I'm aware ...

@toscho You can still access them directly. Just main page isn't there.
And I have to use a placeholder post with an ID just to use the post_class() on the home/front page. WTF!
I'm putting an Ipad4 bounty on anyone who can come up with the working solution to this question that lets me use infinite scroll with any posts or users loop anywhere in a theme. wordpress.stackexchange.com/questions/71297/…
@PolluxKhafra wrong site, go hire yourself a developer
@Rarst Die a happy death someday

I intend to.
@PolluxKhafra come on...
@kaiser Come on what?

Behave please
That's a perfectly nice thing to say
well on a lighter note , I just typed this into google i.imgur.com/tL0SJ.jpg

Looks like my default search strings for "where can I find the last beer?".
lol
@Rarst Im just sayin I've asked questions related to this a number of times and received no working solutions. I've put bounties on them..etc..nothing. All the experts are here so why would I be going to another site. Kindly keep out of my business from now on if you don't like me. I'm trying to build things.
Told you being friendly isn't that hard.
To get to your problem: The point is that this seems to be for Buddypress. And Buddypress seems to use another sort of loop and that's a possible problem why it's not working. You have to dig into this one, tag it with buddypress and provide much more detail. As you know, we ain't got a lot of Buddypress devs around here.

A: Creating a Front-end based User Search

kaiserAs you haven't offered the details on what you're after, I'll try to grab them all very briefly. Use the API - public WP_User_Query API functions Basically get_user_by() should be enough for you. Let's say you fire of your form and the input field name was user_id. So you'd just retrieve the va...

If all this doesn't work: BuddyPress Forums for the rescue.
@PolluxKhafra it is not appropriate to offer out-of-system bounties here. Not everything can and should be answered at this ste, especially if it is complicated and calls for custom hands-on development. If you don't want people talking to you - don't come to chat or use chat features to ignore/etc. Frankly I don't give a damn about you, I only pay attention because I am mod and you tend to be rude and disruptive. If you are going to continue to be so - sooner or later one of mods will get fed up.
@kaiser Yeah someone hinted at that once. Problem is buddypress forums are almost useless as 1 out of 20 questions gets a response.
@Rarst I just don't need you talking to me because you are unhappy and your personality is like a cold cup of coffee.
01:20
@PolluxKhafra then I repeat - don't come in this room or put me in ignore (click around there is such function). I am under no obligation to adjust to what you want.
@Rarst Great!

a handful is an understatement :)

I threw convex regular polychorons at my kindergarten teacher. What’s your problem?
Can't I disable SQL_CALC_FOUND_ROWS somehow?

brain melting syndrome
@ypercube thats a tough one your best asking on main site
> Have you ever tried to understand off-shell supermultiplets and ...
And right after the ellipses I already was at no followed by a period.
@Wyck: You mean as a new question? Will do.
@kaiser WTf you never treid to relate doubly-even error-correcting codes and irreducible representations of N-Extended Supersymmetry, what is wrong with you
@kaiser is from Austria. They are still busy inventing mountains.
@ypercube you should prob read core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/10964
didn't Austria invent ham
01:54
@Wyck you sure these are actual words?
@kaiser yes, relate doubly-even error-correcting codes = checksum and N-Extended Supersymmetry = invisible strings that form reality. Totally solved.
@Wyck dictionary says no.
@Wyck Error correcting codes exist, at least...
dictionary's have not been invented yet
to handle this
here is the paper if you don't beleive me arxiv.org/abs/0806.0051 , bonus you can share it on facebook via the links on the right!
As @toscho said: The internet is just running upwards (the mountains) a little slower. Ask me again next year.
02:01
though they should have titled it , "no one understands this, really".
@Wyck ha! doubly even is just 'divisible by 4'
@Wyck: I'm reading that post to core... but I don't understand all of it. Is the issue still unresolved? It seems some people have been using a patch that works fine (until you upgrade WP at least, where you have to find/load new patch)
@StephenHarris ya pretty much
@ypercube I don't know the specifics, but the major changes to improving the query were applied to patch 3.4
btw I found that paper after watching the author freak out Neil deGrasse Tyson during a conference and wondered what it was all about, i'm not some sort of closet string theorist
which is here if you bored and a nerd, youtube.com/watch?v=lYeN66CSQhg

Can we just ban @PolluxKhafra?
He's just a leech who offers little value to the site and is starting to just show himself to be a rude, entitled little child
really? thought he was ok...? thats unfortunate
@anu not bannable offenses :)
anu
anu
@Rarst which is a shame. anyway, he goes back on ignore
let's all just learn there is ignore user function in chat and live happily ever after. It seems lately it's not being used enough.
anu
anu
the problem is that people keep responding to him. ignore also should ignore replies :)
11:17
Is there any examples of his behavior?
anu
anu
@userabuser just search for almost every interaction he has here - in he comes, 1 minute later "waaaah waaaah someone do this for me"
anyway, whatever, he's back on ignore for me - just hate people with his attitude
@Rarst: have you noticed my question? wordpress.stackexchange.com/questions/71381/…
@ypercube nope...
it just got answered btw
yes, I noticed.
@userabuser why bother editing spam? just flag it?
@ypercube hm, you mentioned my old answer in chat which is on exactly same question? it seems yours is duplicate?
11:33
@Rarst Mostly as a deterrent. Removing links from the posts is useful. Stack gets crawled very quickly. You don't want their links being picked up as BLs nor do you want it to aid in their spam links being indexed quickly. Known tactic. So I do it as a deterrent until a mod comes along to clean up. I know its only a matter of minutes but I prefer to clean the thread bcoz others read it too and it looks shit. I care about that...
@Rarst If you prefer I not do it, just let me know...
@userabuser I think it's waste of your time and I am not sure how system reacts when something is flagged as spam and your edit is part of it
@Rarst Its not a waste of my time because I flag it anyway, its two seconds to edit the contents. Whether it causes a problem with the system - well maybe we need to find out right? I do it because I don't tolerate shit clogging up answers and its outright confusing to people (sometimes) when reading a thread. Sure most people recognize spam. Anyway if we can confirm it causes some glitch in the system.. cool. I'll still remove the links. Spammers don't like that. Tough luck.
@Rarst: They are similar, yes. I don't mind if mine is closed as duplicate. But the answers are opposite. And the core ticket discussion mentions a patch to keep the functionality with better efficiency.
@ypercube the answers are identical - use no_found_rows :)
Maybe I should pharse my question differently .
Oh Fu$$, I had been reading yours as "there is no no_found_rows"
My internal parser has a bug.
11:40
happens :)
lol, off topic mess in lessphp issue tracker on how it is stupid to use PHP for LESS and why people just don't use Node.js. Of course, I will immediately go install node.js so that my CSS works! :)
@ypercube so is it or is it not duplicate?
Yeah, you can close it as duplicate.
real time CSS.. novel concept
Do you mind something else about pagination?
anu
anu
@Rarst Have you seen this: smalify.net - obviates the need to have PHP/node.js process your less files (I use livereload for mac)
@ypercube ask on main if it's substantial... I just woke up and keep trying to slip away from computer for brekafast and stuff :)
11:45
Sure ok.
@anu but then I have to commit and deploy compiled files which is just clutter
@anu ehm, also it says "minify", does it actually compile LESS?
anu
anu
@Rarst My cap script ignores the less file and deploys the css - so no processing of the less file occurs on the server. But yup if you don't want to do that, then fine
not sure, don't use Windows, the OS X versions do compile
it would be weird if all it did was minify though :)
anyway I prefer to just develope in LESS and have wp-less compile it. no extra steps to keep in mind
anu
anu
@Rarst fair enough, I'm using less for more than WP stuff, so don't want to rely on a WP plugin
it's just a WP wrapper for above mentioned lessphp
I need tea.
11:54
@Rarst Did you say you were working on user based plugin?
@anu It's true I ask a lot of questions and have very little to contribute to people like you because my skills are way behind. But for the record I am working only on one project that is mine and it's not for profit.
I hope in the future that I will be able to give more back and contribute more to the internet as a whole with my ideas but for now I'm just learning. Pretty sure the only time I've been rude was toward Rarst and that's because he's rude to me. I'm completely grateful to everyone else on here and that's my word. =)
Rarst isn't Rude, he's European.
2
@anu and I'm pretty sure you've answered a few of my questions and I'm grateful for that so I hope I wasn't rude to you in anyway.
@userabuser Then I'm not entitled..I'm American lol
@userabuser not that I can think of?..
I don't get why people get upset about people who ask questions. Like isn't that what this is for. Seems like some get really good at something and then forget once they didn't know what they we're doing.
12:05
@Rarst Must've been thinking of something/someone else then? Only asking because I have a few projects that each make use of the users table quite extensively and I was thinking that I want to simplify the way I work with users/user_meta since I am writing a lot of the same functions. All good.. thought someone was doing something related to that. Thanks
@userabuser wasn'tme
@PolluxKhafra Its called elitism. One day too you shall be elite and look down on the mere peasants...
Reading up the chat makes me not wanna use this site anymore. I'll kindly leave and maybe drop by when my project is finished to thank all who helped me.
reading up the chat?
Yeah like anu slamming me for asking too many questions?
That makes me entitled?
12:09
I think we can all be friends here yeah? The fact that you've come here to show gratitude to those that have helped you should speak for you. So I don't think you should "not wanna use this site anymore".
If theres a difference of opinion everyone should be able to work it out...
It's cool..just rough to read that.
yeehaww cowboy
notice anything.. odd about that screenshot?
hmm... just the name Tom J Nowell
12:16
hint, look at the page title
the page is doing something it wouldn't normally do on iOS
word wrap?
then compare it to this:
@TomJNowell aren't you like only person in the room who would know what iOS would normally do? :)
@Rarst lol
we are bunch of cheapskate apple haters, remember... :)
12:18
iOS6 changed the status bar behaviour, so it draws from the titlebar of the app
anu
anu
@Rarst speak for yourself :P
so skype has a pale blue status bar, whereas in iOS5 it was always black or gray
BBC app has a dimmed red
look what soundclouds webpage has
i have iphone but im still a hater..
you not notice? =(
still on 5
12:21
you can see it in the two images above
look at the status bar on my site test page vs soundcloud
( and shame on you being on 5 not 6 )
yeah i can now... good idea
yes, all the shame, on me... bring it
barely use the thing that much.. not as much as i used to
they're just not that great no more... good... but not great...
@userabuser I'd consider iOS6 essential for the iMessages stuff
@Rarst I'm doing the same as @userabuser . Often Spam stays for me visible and red (deleted), so I don't care. It's so annoying, that any edit is fine for me.
@TomJNowell you recharged between your screenshots.
@kaiser lol I took soundcloud shot first then my site then skype
@TomJNowell orderby=rand
You're such a crazy bastard
@All Please add your self to this ticket. I'm trying to push core devs a little to get this bug fixed, but having lots of people added to it makes it easier. Thanks.
13:20
@kaiser how so?
@Rarst That's what I've always been tolds: "If there's lots of people needing it..."
anyone wants to rubber duck custom ajax endpoint stuff?
Can't imagine what this would be useful for
@kaiser endpoint? performance. full WP core is too slow.
Endpoint like in rewrite endpoint or in admin-ajax.php contents?
13:34
21
A: Ajax takes 10x as long as it should/could

RarstYep, this is nasty issue that to have full WordPress environment you need to spend considerable time loading it. I've needed much better performance (for very dynamic incremental search feature) for work and what I went with is: Custom file as Ajax handler. SHORTINIT constant for limited WP co...

I know that. What's the problem? Doesn't it work?
the one piece of it that needs work is locating wp-load.php...
so I've been thinking - why not generate it in page body and make Ajax aware of it... but then how do I not turn this into security hole?
Ok. I'd really love to jump in on this one, but I need to fix some stuff and work. Sorry.
if you can do this safely its a big +
If it's not too urgent, I can go on this with you next week.
13:37
no worries, I don't need it right now - just remembered it needs work (got upvote on answer last night)
maybe @toscho will have idea but he is being sane person off computer on Saturday
13:48
Just a note to @ALL of you: extract( $data, EXTR_IF_EXISTS ); skips empty/0 values and does not extract them.
extract() is meh...
But in some cases it helps readability a lot.
it confuses the heck out of IDE that no longer can analyze what is defined and what is appearing out of thin air - completely compromises checking for defined and unused variables, redefinitions, etc
btw completed web fundamentals track! at 2 in the morning... next - jQuery track
anyone tried...
@Rarst I just been having some fun with jQuery last couple days... if you can call it that... ;)
@userabuser why? it's just hooks de-WordPress-ed
morning
just wondering if anyone tried it yet
mlmmj is pretty nice piece of software for mailing lists
@Rarst I use it in some rare cases. One is a function that has exactly no other vars than those.
14:03
var multilines = [
'',
'',
''
].join(”);
Won't work :D
#failingquotes
yeah.. aside from that ;)
more readable in some respects... but... depends on ya style
@userabuser Sadly this doesn#t cover mentioned slash method
no but apparently that breaks
hmm
works for me in console
@userabuser Added test. Testing now.
@userabuser And it's fastest in the just run test :)
14:34
Quite interesting isnt it...
Or in the words @TomJNowell would probably use: "When you need to travel from Moscow to Paris one could use a Bicycle, but ...". Ok, I'm just not Mr. Metaphor :)
@kaiser one can spend $50,000 on an advanced electromagnetic tin opener, but I'd just use the ring pull...
hahaha but...? backslash it?
lol
Stupid question - but does naming a file deprecated.php make it behave... differently...? I'm trying to include a file in 'includes/deprecated.php'. I have it duplicated as 'deprecated2.php'. The latter executes code - the former doesn't.... :/
14:50
@StephenHarris it shouldn't, but if it were, either PHP.net would tell you about it, or you should file a bug report to whomever is responsible
@StephenHarris you are likely including wrong file, look up PHP include logic. you need to use absolute path or it can go include piece of WP core or whatever that shares a name if you only use name
@Rarst ah that'll be it. Cheers. Thought I was going mad...
so no include 'deprecated.php'; but include dirname(__FILE__).'/deprecated.php'
@Rarst a piece of wp core is likely, there is a deprecated.php
@StephenHarris ABSPATH . WPINC . '/deprecated.php' is already included in /wp-settings.php.
14:51
@StephenHarris been there, done that :)
@TomJNowell I'll file that bug report with myself then :)
you should get an error.
wp-admin/includes/deprecated.php
wp-includes/deprecated.php too
15:27
new samsung 900x3c revision $2046... yikes

1 hour later…
16:29
mutters next I am going to be receiving patches by pigeons... I am so getting rest of stuff on Bitbucket :) cc @StephenHarris
@Rarst :). Keep me posted about the new parser for QueryPosts. How is the code parsing handled now?
@StephenHarris I am trying to build on top of PHPReflect but got derailed by work crap. now that I no longer have work I will spend some time on it soon.
the problem is teaching it to recognize non-PHP stuff like hooks... for this I need to make sense of how PHP is parsed by its engine and that is not quite trivial for my brains
@kaiser cheaper but worse specs than the one I quoted... something between that one and D revision that is $1300
btw they also released 15" in series... interesting move
@Rarst So is QP currently based on CodGen?
16:42
@StephenHarris yes
17:09
Guy I answered a question for said thanks with donating some bucks. Nice :)
someone who shows true appreciation!
@toscho as per discussion above - any opinions on finding wp-load.php in arbitrarily located file?
@kaiser Btw, what was the question?
17:24
@Rarst Run a RecursiveDirectoryIterator from $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'] downwards.
@userabuser afaik something with regex + gallery + shortcode
tricky
trivial
treet!
tttoscho
17:29
tragic
@toscho will poke... how nuts it will be performance-wise?
probably not good
combo breaker rarst
and it will fail if your plugin has a different doc root than wp
what do you think about passing to JS where to look for it so it's included in request?
17:31
relying on JS is always meh
I would create the file that needs that path on plugin activation
don't like to involve filesystem...
@Rarst Just use wp_localize_script() or the script data functions to store it. If JS doesn't work, there's anyway no AJAX, so no meh either.
@kaiser yeah, but I am thinking through security implications at moment. "go include that file" sounds dangerous :)
Mhm. So you're considering WP a safe place? :D
@Rarst You could store the md5 of the real file too.
17:43
@toscho store where :) if I could access that to verify I could as well store the path there and not bother with JS
You have access to the file when you run wp_localize_script(). Add a salted MD5.
have you ever done that before?
ah... good one. my current thinking is (1) restrict file name to wp-load.php (2) instead of path pass number of directory levels relative to endpoint
hm, number of levels won't work if there in different branches
18:03
JavaScript needs breaks... toooo freeform

19:57
@benlevywebdesign Ask on main site. You should know that already.
20:11
I understand that but isn't it more logical to use what is faster
this is instant where as the other isn't see logic
xampp is such a peice of s^^^t
@benlevywebdesign Try to get behind why the main site is no forum, but considered a Q/A. Then try to understand what this chat is and who we are (hint: Not your free support channel). And then simply stop it.
I love how you update php (or anything really) on windows, copy/paste files manually, overwrite, cross fingers
20:30
I'm pretty sure you're updating PHP on win the wrong way. It's probably more something like pear gem sudo rake -f -g --install -crossfingers.
Command 'gem' is not valid, try 'pear help', ok ill install ruby then an emulator, then a linux bridge, then -crossfingers
oh and ill also try and get my fax machine in on the action
Mate, you just don't get it. Again forgot to install some needed dependencies. Oh my.

@benlevywebdesign sighs
it being faster for you is of no concern or interest to me
but asking questions here means that everyone else doesn't benefit from the answer
so, you're basically being selfish
so stop it

21:18
@benlevywebdesign You probably won't get an answer here, so by that logic, its better for you to ask on the main site :)
@StephenHarris is it because you guys don't give answers is that why?
@benlevywebdesign chat is community hangout area, we are not here to answer questions
my answer is grey goose

PHP Documentor is pretty nice
Template stack - Beyond parent/child theme relationships: http://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/22355
PHP Documentor for WordPress - 4 minutes - 360 deprecated, 47 todo, 4 fix-me and a sh^ton of erros lol
mainly just docblock ones
The Missing description parts are annoying.
ya I wonder if I can disable that
the output is so much more readable then the current crummy one on trac and not as good as queryposts.com :)
I just added it to my phing script for plugins/themes, but the graphs are kinda wierd, wish it was full js library
50mb stand alone to show the graphs, surely there is a better way
