@Rarst It's just another way to skin the deployment cat
@BrianFegter my point is that people care about how it looks, deployment script doesn't :)
@Jared btw I assumed you are asking about github as in version control hosting service, not as version control in general?
Ah so I assume GitHub is mostly for collaborating with others.
@Jared Github is a host for Git
You can use git without using github
github is just a website that makes version control pretty.
Ok that makes sense
I have used (Tortoise) SVN but I don't really like it
Tortoise is just a client to access a SVN repo.
22:08
SVN sucks. distributed version control (Git and Mercurial mostly) are much better
Mac has some nice GIT and SVN tools.
And now is a point in my career I really need to start getting organized or I will suffer the consequences.
This is a great video by Linus Torvalds, the creator of Git and gatekeeper of Linux kernel. youtube.com/watch?v=4XpnKHJAok8 He explains git, his hatret for SVN and predecessor repo software
Nice that will keep me busy for the next hour, thanks
@Rarst Hate SVN too.
Versions for Mac makes SVN a bit less painful
@Jared GET A MAC!!! :) There is a lot of great software tools available for developers. I'm a PC > Mac convert as of last year.
22:14
What's the best place to shop online for one? (price-wise)
@BrianFegter meh, like there isn't for PC :)
I'm not too sure. My company buys my hardware.
What about Linux?
I think you can look at Mac refurbs. They have a good reputation
You need to ask @ChipBennett about Linux. That's the OS he uses.
If you use Tortoise for SVN, there are also Tortoise clients for Git and Hg (Mercurial) as well.
Similar workflow, similar look, less to re-learn
22:18
Only problem is the only thing I could ever manage to learn with SVN was to put the files on it for my client to use lol.
git has good support among the most popular IDEs, if you're afraid of command line , you really don't have to use it...but it's fun if you've got used to it :)
I am unfamiliar with command line stuff but I guess it's always something good to learn.
Github has a good training program
22:36
@BrianFegter there are GUI Linux clients for both SVN and Git, but for git (GitHub) I usually just use the CLI. It's much, much faster.
(I'm in and out. Pain meds are causing me to pass out.)
@ChipBennett Hope you feel better!
@BrianFegter thanks :)
23:13
hm... 50 rep went missing on me... my turn to try and solve the puzzle :)
@All In case you haven't been aware of this: google.com/history
Well I installed Git, signed up at GitHub, everything's done and a repository is created, but how do I put files in it now? Lol noob question probably but oh well.
@Jared just follow the instructions on your repository page
You through Git to [email protected]:YOUR_USER_NAME/REPO_NAME.git
@Jared git init
@toscho git remote add origin {url}
I did all that
@Jared git pull origin master
My repository just has a README file
@Jared then add your files locally
23:26
Oh I see
3 guys trying to teach one guy 3 different ways for one task Haha!
Haha
I appreciate the help though
@Jared see also, this cheatsheet I wrote for myself: bit.ly/hpwkVc
@ChipBennett What's your github link?
23:28
So git add . will basically say "These files will be committed" and then you do another command to add a commit message and then you push it to the repository? Is that how it works?
@ChipBennett followed
@Jared Get git GUI
Much easier to add stuff and commit w msg
@Jared yup! Pretty much it
Alright
Hmm now to think of something actually useful I can make...
The one big missing thing in Git GUI is the console.
@Jared You could fix my plugins. Great way to learn something!
Which ones need fixing?
23:35
@Jared It was a joke. :) But … Report-Broken-Video needs a clever solution to prevent double submits.
@toscho $form = <<<RBVFORM I never understood this type of coding, Dreamweaver always says it's wrong. What is it's purpose?
@Jared It is called heredoc.
Just a kind of a parsed string.
@Jared what do you use Dreamweaver for?
@Bainternet I only use it because it autocompletes a lot of code for me and I like the code hints.
Otherwise I hate how bulky it is and has a million things I'll never use.
@kaiser what is your GitHub username?
23:49
One last git question if I may lol, how do I (for example, @toscho's Report-Broken-Video repo) take them files and put them on my local machine to start messing with it? I forked it already.
@Jared did you read my cheatsheet? I recently added forking
Just checking it out now
if you forked it then on your local do git clone url/to/forked/repo
Cool I figured it out, thanks
The close duplicates extension is a must have. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work across multiple windows.
