@EAMann A rare case. Thanks for jumping in and ending it :)
01:22
Hey guys, I'm wondering if I can ask a question in here that's racking my brain....
Anyone in here?

Replace ugly fonts – this is great.

@kaiser Looks like it's not quite over ... thanks for trying to help him in the first place, though.

10 hours left to go :)

excited :)?
hello
@ungestaltbar I try not to be.

@EAMann I can't believe that you've taken the time to write such an answer. Could you please block me away from that guy ;)
anyone here
need some quick help
@kaiser: can you help me with custom taxonomy how-to
@kaiser These files are slightly outdated.
@toscho But good enough to learn everything you need. I always link them :)
no not that... i was using custom taxonomies to display cities in one dropdown and when particular city was selected from the dropdown, it was populating another dropdown with its respective locations
now the location dropdown is showin cities in the locations dropdown
it started happening after i upgraded wp to the latest release
12:29
@booota better go and ask Q on the main site.
@booota You’re doing it wrong. See this answer for a better solution.
This seems to be more than a quick question.
@toscho: yeah, its a hierarchy based. like:
city
city
-location
-location
$results = ashyana_getTaxonomyValues( 'locations', 'Islamabad', 0 );
print_r($results);
function ashyana_getTaxonomyValues( $taxonomyName = "", $taxonomyChild = '', $parent = null ) {
if( !empty( $taxonomyName ) && taxonomy_exists( $taxonomyName ) ) {
if( !empty( $taxonomyChild ) ) {
$term_details = get_term_by( 'name', $taxonomyChild, $taxonomyName );
$terms = get_terms( $taxonomyName, ( $parent == 0 ) ?
array( 'parent'=>$term_details->term_id, 'hide_empty'=>0 ) :
array( 'fields' => 'all', 'hide_empty'=>0 ) );
return $terms;
}
else {
$terms = get_terms( $taxonomyName, ( $parent == 0 ) ?
@kaiser: look at the code, can you suggest what is going wrong?
in my previous installation, everything is working fine
@booota Ask a new question on the main site!
ok thanks
12:50
@toscho: figured it out

@anu Nice! That's exactly my plan for the weekend ;) Recommended reading?

I wonder which fanatic designed the plugin list: tiny fonts on low contrast. Very useful.
@toscho Problem is not the font-size. It's the sizes units.
@kaiser No. No matter what a unit is used: I cannot read fonts in a size that differs so much from my default.

ooh ~2.5 hours
@ThomasMcDonald The election page is well hidden again.
17:24
@toscho doesn't matter... only couple hours left and votes been coming very slowly for days
user30
System messages only last for 3 days iirc
@Rarst Make it bold and big (30px).
user30
@toscho or a fullpage ad...
@ThomasMcDonald Hehe, an overlay which can be disabled by voting only.

@Maugly this was the most helpful: theme.fm/2011/08/…
but it's mainly from reading a bunch of capistrano & wordpress posts and mashing everything together
@ThomasMcDonald What happened to the link on top?
@anu thanks!
user30
@kaiser It was a system message. They auto expire.
user30
Only mods can set them.
ok ... ?

Q: Upcoming Reputation History Changes

Nick CraverUpdate: this is now being tested on meta, we'll be watching for bugs and such over the next few days. During the rollout you will see empty reptuation tabs on profiles as we transition to the new storage behind the scenes, they'll be restored as the recalc rolls though each user. Behind the s...

This will make it much easier to target specific reputation numbers.

aye

@ThomasMcDonald Are you the owner of this room?
17:53
It took me some effort to hit the 6666 mark exactly. :D
user30
@kaiser yeah
What did you change in the feed?
user30
I added the SE blog to be posted here.
Could you add WPSE Meta posts too?

Q: WordCamp Phoenix Follow-up

EAMannYes, I'm breaking all the rules by posting a non-question. Since we don't yet have a separate WPSE blog, this seemed the most appropriate venue for a post-WordCamp discussion. This past weekend, I left the frozen, drizzling weather that is my hometown of Portland and made the trek to the sunny d...

Can anyone explain this implode() to me?
$footer_text = array(
	'<span id="footer-thankyou">' . __( 'Thank you for creating with <a href="http://wordpress.org/">WordPress</a>.' ) . '</span>',
);
echo apply_filters( 'admin_footer_text', implode( ' &bull; ', $footer_text ) );
From wp-admin/admin-footer.php.
@toscho what about it?
@Rarst I cannot understand the code: Why is $footer_text an unfilterable array that gets imploded?
It is absolutely impossible to get the &bull; on the page.
18:08
coded on Monday or something...
look up patch and ask the person who put it in :)
If I open a trac ticket for this, it will stay forever.
@toscho Archaeologists will love that ticket

Election closes in 1 hour. I think, I’ll take a looong nap now.
user30
yeah, 1hr 20
@ThomasMcDonald How many poor people evaluate our ballot papers?
user30
@toscho You can download the ballots as soon as the election finishes
user30
and run them through Open STV, which should also have a download link once the election has finished
@ThomasMcDonald in geek-appropriate way election uses algorithm that is not computable by human :)
user30
18:43
@Rarst Yeah, I was reading through the post on meta explaining how it is computed
I like the part where my humor fails miserably ten times each day.
user30
Oh, I guessed it was sarcastic
user30
but if you didn't know the serious answer
@toscho lol
18:58
Good luck mod candidates
user30
19:54
@toscho shame :(
@ThomasMcDonald I think this is a good decision.
user30
@toscho Oh yeah, if it's not ready yet
We get many new features in 3.4. I am scared enough without TwentyTwelve.

Next year, when i candidate again, I build an Ebay count down.
I think you will make it this round @toscho lol

Think that's right
481 voters were eligible, 242 visited the site during the election, 126 visited the election page, and 74 voted
Sweet, Rarst, MikeSchinkel and EAMann won! Lol (must be showing me last election?)

I guess you will get a message in the next day. :)

Thanks to everyone who voted and Congrats to the winners
Congrats to our new mods and happy mod-ing ! :)

Only 74 voted? I thought it will be a few hundreds!
user30
hrm, that should onebox.
20:43
unofficial estimate - Bainternet killed it, toscho confident second, Brady wrestled third from Brian... preliminary congrats! :)
hm, chat glitched for me hadn't seen last chunk of it...
@StackExchange hmmmm... this seem to describe theme-recommendation and plugin-recommendation ... should we take a hint?
user30
@Rarst probably.
user30
I think this is one for Meta.
on it
user30
in that case, I'll start crafting a probable answer
@Rarst pretty easy wrestling match
user30
20:53
@BrianFegter nah
user30
there was very little in it
I was mainly surprised by the 242 unique visitors to the site
What is the typical metric for unique visitors per day to WPSE?
user30
lets ask the api!
user30
oh, they took that out of version 2.0
user30
> "views_per_day": 6992.55,

@BrianFegter visitors eligible for voting, that is >150 rep.

Q: Are theme and plugin recommendation guessing games?

Also @Rarst, it wouldn't surprise me if a reasonable portion of those plugin-recs can be salvaged.

in The Bridge, 1 min ago, by Grace Note
@ThomasMcDonald Well, I'm no Wordpress guru, but if my understanding is correct, a lot of plugin-recommendation type questions can actually become useful questions by just changing to focus on not "What plugins do X", but instead on the problem of doing X.

Q: So, what actually is a game-rec?

badpThe problem with all encompassing policies is that people tend to use those instead of using the brain and determining whether a question possesses or not the bad qualities that make game-rec's toxic for the site. What exactly is a game-rec?

@Rarst I think my question here may be a candidate for a community-wiki wordpress.stackexchange.com/questions/43935/…
@Rarst @All I hope you jump in and discuss this. It's one of our biggest "tasks" and "problems" over here.
@BrianFegter Why?
@kaiser I'm seeing there's probably not ever going to be a 'real' answer on this
@BrianFegter Douglas Campbell gave one. Should just be no comment, but an answer instead.
@BrianFegter not worth it... CW is almost never used nowadays, seen too much abuse

question - if you're registering multiple custom post types is it better to split the declarations into separate functions and hook init multiple times, or have 1 larger function, register all the cpts there and only hook init once?
@anu Guess it's only style
anu
anu
yeah, the purist in me wants to separate them out, just wondering if there are performance issues
probably minimal, i'm overthinking this
@anu Exactly. I've read about it sometime ago. There was a difference in performance but it was tiny. And splitting it up is often more logical and readable.
@anu Depends. If they work very different – separate them. If you need a lot of similar code combine the registration.
I am tempted to rename the room into "black squares talking"
anu
anu
23:31
@rarst black and white now
thanks all - useful advice
@anu more often I register a post type with its related taxonomy in one init hook function.
@Rarst "black squares talking" sounds good. Have you thought about inverse version of yours?
anu
anu
ah, much more consistent, i like :)
Welcome to the dark side.
